If we get Yurt cleared it looks like a one year window to make some real noise. It could be the type of thing that spring boards the program.

I want to see some Amoeba zone defense and a return to a recognizable offense. Do those two things, push the tempo, fill out the roster, get Yurt cleared and it’s Elite 8 or bust.

Statered44: I like 30 because you are fully established, have played hard, probably are secure in your career and are able to go after it in parenting.

I was personally way, way too selfish in my 20s. I wasn’t a screw up, but I would not have been as good a parent as I would like to think that I am. I’d have resented the kids making the sacrifices that I am happy to make now.

I’ve got two kids. You’d better believe that I’m teaching them “no kids until you are 30.” While there are always outliers and exceptions, there are a handful of ways to derail life early and having a kid while still a kid yourself is one of them.

Good verbal! Let’s get him signed and through the Clearing House. We’ll not really know who we have on the roster until the basketballs roll out this fall.

I don’t think this has anything to do with Abu going one way or another. I think it has more to do with what the Celtics (or other NBA teams) tell him. He wants to hear he is NBA ready and will be drafted. The question really is whether he gets enough warm fuzzies to keep his name in the draft.

TOB took one in hand vs two in a bush. The wheels were in motion the previous year though. That much was obvious when RW went out with the Seniors on Senior Day despite having eligibility left. I’d heard some other stories about how it went down with Bible and Glennon as well.

I personally never felt that TOB handled this one correctly, and I would guess it is a major part of the reason that he’s no longer coaching here. Now that TOB is gone, I personally don’t care any more about how it went down. I just hope that NC State is smart enough to keep the relationship active and healthy with Wilson.

Good pickup in Hicks. I think the prize (and the ability to make any real noise this year) is with Yurt. Hope we finish the late recruiting season strong.

Cat was done this year and everyone knew that before the season started. There’s absolutely no way we’d have landed DSJ if there was any chance that Cat was returning.

Cat had a great year and is off likely to the NBA. He’s got some attributes (speed and innate scoring ability) that make him an interesting prospect. If he lands in the right spot, he could have a long career. Here’s to hoping he makes it!

statered44: The more I talked with people and found out the lay of the land with Yow, the better I felt that Arch’s extension at Dayton was for us. That extension was the best thing to happen for NC State basketball this year. Thank you Dayton.

I’ve now come to a zen like state with respect to Gott, Yow and what will be. I hope the changes made this year improve that record, because .500 in league play isn’t what I personally find acceptable for NC State basketball. I’m perfectly fine with that for football, but not for basketball, particularly given our resources, the program’s built in advantages and what we’re paying.

Tau: I think Yurt is key for next year and we definitely have a shot. Just as things snowball in a bad way, they can snowball in a good way too. Here’s to hoping that’s what happens.

statered44: I think there’s a mountain of evidence from Gott’s time at NC State and his time at Alabama for us to tell what type of coach he is. It’s been discussed many, many times here. If you want, we can rehash it, but it’s in this thread and many others.

You want to focus on the bottom line and that’s fine. It’s eerily similar between Gott’s time at Alabama and his time at NC State — ~.610-.616 overall and ~.500 in league play. If it is all about the bottom line, then the question really is whether that is good enough. It wasn’t for Alabama, his alma mater. I would hope that .500 in league play isn’t good enough for NC State either. Maybe it is though.

We’ve got Gott 1-2 more years. I’m going to hold out hope that it’s going to play out in the best case scenario that Tau lays out. If so, maybe the problem really was the assistants.

Ahhhh… Doh!! Totally forgot that first one. Just remembered how bad the meltdown was against St. Louis. I stand corrected.

Cowdog: St. Louis beat us in that play in game………….. It was the game when Lewis couldn’t break a press and no one could make a free throw. It wasn’t that we blew that one game that was so frustrating (granted that was an epic meltdown), it was that we squandered the ACC POY and the best player to wear our uniform since Hodge.

As for that Oklahoma State game, did you watch it? We were physically dominated, manhandled by their defense and beaten by a freshman (albeit a very good one). We had (on paper) our best team since V. To lay down like that told me that something was seriously wrong. Nothing in year 2 changed that opinion.

My hope is that Pierre brings that toughness that I saw that day against Oklahoma State. For once I’d like Wolfpack basketball to be mentally and physically tougher than the opponent and have a mean streak. I’ve not seen a nasty NC State team since the days of Thornton and Inge. If we toughen up, learn how to play defense and salvage a roster, then maybe we can turn this thing around.

Here’s a relevant clip from my favorite movie:

Roo: Thanks for the insightful post on what you’ve heard regarding men’s basketball. I know you’ve been supportive and I can understand why. No one wants to see it unfold this way, but it’s been fairly predictable for some time.

I never liked this hire but was pleasantly surprised by year 1. That Oklahoma State game and year two in general told me all I really needed to know about whether this staff could ever really break through. Ever since then it’s been waiting to see it all play out. I was messaging in the TJW year and last year that this was a divided fanbase. Unfortunately it seems to be swinging towards unified, and that typically only happens near the end.

The problems are that massive buy out, the re-upped extension and doubling down with new assistants. We’re seemingly pot committed to this path for at least 1-2 more years, so this isn’t the end.

My question is about Yow. How is she getting a pass on this? These things were pretty obvious to me from year 2, and were should have been painfully clear to anyone watching in year 3 (when we had the ACC POY and lost in our Last four in Game) and most of year 4. There was nothing prior to the last offseason that screamed “extension and raise” yet she got it pushed through. Is there no accountability there?

Troll: We all know there are different expectations, resources, history, etc. with respect to football and basketball at NC State. I’m not expecting a great year out of football, but I expect one more in line with our spot in the relative pecking order.

The only “really” interesting stories in football would be:
    – A 7-5 or better type year: Would suggest significant improvement due to better results despite a tougher schedule.
    – The dreaded trifecta of losing to ECU, losing to UNC and have a losing record: Only 2 coaches at State in the past 35+ years have survived that. Both times it was early in their tenure (Sheridan) or their first hiccup (Amato). Could DD survive it? Given his failure to launch and ensuing hiccups, I kind of doubt it. I personally hope we don’t find out.

Mista: I’m not at the games so I don’t see all of that. I would caution against reading too much into body language. A lot of context is lost and I also think it’s human nature to see what we want to see. We also tend to ignore similar things done by the other team (i.e. disagreements on court).

13OT: I tend to agree with your statement. This appears to be the status quo for the next couple of seasons. I’ve accepted it.

NC State will have Gott next season. The time to be proactive was 8 weeks ago. Nothing has really developed since then that changed my opinion then (which was the same as my opinion at the end of the Oklahoma State game in year 2). The window though has closed for a while and we’ve decided to try some new assistants.

We may as well grin and bear it. The current reality has seemingly been the case since signing that extension. Nobody at this point is going to pay Gott to buy him out — not NC State or another school.

My advice is to not worry about what happens between now and when we roll the balls out in late fall. Who will be on the roster will be on the roster. Games will be played. We’ll win some and we’ll lose some. With every one, Gott and Yow are one more game closer to being gone.

1997: I don’t know that I believe the Tweet and will wait to see how this plays out. I think that Abu has wanted a 2 year plan. I’ve not seen him grow at the pace to support being a NBA player now. I think he needs another year to work on his game, where ever that is.

Now, if he were elect to take that year somewhere else, I’d agree that that would be potentially quite telling. I can’t see him transferring and sitting out a year. I suspect if he doesn’t feel like he’s developing here, he’ll just go pro.

I’ve been vocal of my opinion of Gott. I’ve also thought for a while that Abu was gone if he heard ANYTHING remotely good from a NBA team (one would think not being invited to the combine would have been clearly the opposite).

Having said that, I don’t put much stock in a Tweet. This isn’t saying anything about Goodman and his relationship with our fanbase or anything else, it’s more just the medium, lack of context, any sort of validation that Abu actually said that, etc.. Shrugs. It’s just a Tweet.

Now as for who is on the team next year, all bets are off until the balls roll out for fall practice. That includes players leaving and ones coming. We’ve seemingly got the coaching staff for next season locked in.

I agree with pakfanistan. I’m fine with Anya going in. Hopefully he hears from the NBA people a validation of what our coaches have been telling him.

fullmoon1: Best answer would be to effectively stop, and to definitely stop spending any money towards it. If all they care about is the money, then the only thing that changes it is the money drying up.

It’s really a fantastic model though. Every one of these big schools graduates 7k-15k more customers every single year. The schools want to provide enough winning to hook the kids into giving and spending later. Kids are dumb and idealistic. It takes years for that to dry up.

Where I contend it backfires is when people become jaded and wisen up (towards their peak earning years), they won’t in turn pump the big money in. This is why I think the NCAA is killing the goose. Most 30-40 year olds that I know won’t be giving $$$ towards athletics. When those 60-70 year olds that are giving lots die off, where do the schools go?

Ply: what’s the worst thing that happens? Would we get kicked out of the ACC? Big deal. We might be better off as an independent, especially as one known to have taken the moral high road. The endowment would grow significantly almost overnight though. That’s a trade I’d be willing to make.

The only move left is the bold one. If I were Chancellir Randy, I’d be working the phones right now.

Stick: I post at both with pretty much identical messaging and an almost identical users. My thoughts are my thoughts, but they’re shared with different people. I have people that I like to discuss things with on each site.

I stand by my statement. Just stop playing UNC. I’d bet that FSU, GT, Syracuse and Miami would join us given that all got way more from the NCAA and ACC for less. I’d bet that Clemson would too. The ACC would either completely implode or sanction UNC.

Come on NC State. Give me something to believe in. By standing idly by, you are effectively complicit.

Roo: If by your last post you are saying that nothing is changing the inevitable minimal slap on the wrist that UNC was always going to get from day one, then I’d agree with that. If you are saying that because of that, NC State fans should just shut up, keep paying and continue the status quo, then I don’t agree with that at all.

If I were NC State, I’d start at the baseball series with UNC and just not play it. I’d tell UNC, the ACC and the national media that we forfeit every game in every sport against them. Turn up the heat on them. Would it be painful? Absolutely. Would it risk our ACC TV money? Yep.

It’d be the best PR move we could possibly make. It’s about the ONLY way that I could see it increase donations and support from the rank and file NC State fan and continue them coming in the future. Hell, I’d donate if we did that because it was actually making a stance. What we’ve always done is turn the other cheek, toss our hands up in the air, complain about the PTB at the BOG level, and effectively just go along with it.

This move might also pave the way for our departure from the conference. As little as 3 years ago I incorrectly argued against this. I now think is the best path for us, even if the departure locks us out of the Power 5 sweepstakes.

I don’t think it would be as bad as most think though. If NC State made that move, then FSU, GT and Clemson would surely follow. Even Swofford couldn’t keep that situation swept under the rug. The ACC cannot afford to lose 3 of the large state supported universities and 3 of the 4 tech/engineering schools. The conference isn’t viable with only the small private schools, UNC, UVA and the former Big East teams.

I’ve thought for a long time that UNC men’s basketball was going to skate. The timing of everything was just too coincidental. What little hope I had was completely dashed when I heard the announcers during the Final Four with the talking points, as clearly handed out by the NCAA.

If I were any other school that had gotten sanctions by the NCAA, I’d be suing right now. The only reason that USC or Penn State would not though would be if this were paired with the rumored “Power 5 break away” that gives the biggest schools autonomy from the NCAA, and the ability to further their professional minor league sports in order to take in TV revenue. If USC and Penn State don’t sue, then expect to see the Power 5 announcement within the next ~ 9 months.

Big time D1 college athletics have been headed in the wrong direction for the past 15-20 years. Letting UNC skate is just another of a continuing trend.

The NCAA and the colleges better watch out because they’re about to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. They’re protected right now due to those multi-year TV deals, but this landscape is drastically changing. I’ve cut my cord, won’t be going back, and won’t be paying for any sort of sports bundle either. Turn off enough customers with decisions like this, and it will be done.

And the PackPride posters do have the right idea. NC State should just cancel series with UNC. Just forfeit the games and don’t even play them. That’d be making a real STATEment.

The only way for the University to wake up is if they’re hit in the wallet. NC State fans have been complete suckers for years giving WPC dues, LTR payments, gobbling up season tickets, etc. which effectively just supports the status quo. If people want some change, the big money donors need to pull back (which has been rumored) and the rank and file need to walk out the door (in a way that makes it clear there won’t be a next generation of big money donors).
