Good win yesterday. It was clearly a trap game. That last one before the bye, with two huge games afterwards, coming off a big win, and going on the road at noon in what clearly was going to be a 2/3rds empty stadium (no crowd to create energy). We played in the first half just like I feared we would, but came out much more aggressively focused in the second half.

The game ball goes to Hines. That was one of the better displays I have seen in a Pack uniform in the first half. He seemed to go out with some sort of injury so I hope he is okay.

We have two huge games coming up, but I think we have to get focused on that first one. I wish Clemson were up first, but so be it. Go Pack!

Hate it for Beverly, but this isn’t the issue to go to the mattresses over with the NCAA. The irony is thick though that the kid has to sit out of playing because he attended classes, while the school down the road just had many, many others who exhausted eligibility while not attending classes.

If anyone expected anything real to happen to UNC, then I have some ocean front property in Oklahoma to sell you. UNC is one of the NCAA’s cash cows. The NCAA makes money off the basketball tournament and apparel licensing. UNC is huge for them in both. To think the NCAA was going to do anything that might hurt it’s own revenue sources was just blind hope. Anyone here still believe in the Easter Bunny?

I figured they’d get a wrist slap. The harshest I expected was some vacated wins, more probation, and maybe a 1 year postseason ban. None of those things would have changed anything. Shrugs.

Even with these low expectations, I will admit that this was such a joke that all I could do was laugh. Paki hit me up after this was released and while I didn’t “know,” I already knew. Even as cynical as I was all along, it was still a sad day for NC State.

If NC State had any spine, they’d hold a press conference on Monday and just announce that we’ll forfeit all games for 5 years against UNC in all sports — the length of time that UNC should not be playing any games based on their infractions. Fans go home, there will be no games. We’ll take the hit from loss of TV revenue. I’d love to see old Swof and the ACC try to levy anything.

Hogs rule, the real battle is in the trenches. The best QB in the world cannot do anything if he’s running for his life. The best RB is going to be minimized without gaps to run through. And if you can’t stop the run or put pressure on the QB guess what…YOU LOSE EVERY TIME.

I agree with this. I wish we’d have not lost our DL coach. If we’re extending contracts, then I hope Ledford is one that we are extending or upping.

I’m expecting nothing more than a hand slap. I’d expect things like vacated wins, 1-3 years of postseason bans, some reduction of scholarships for a few years, and maybe paying some fines.

If there’s anything with any real teeth, I’d be shocked. If a team ever deserved the death penalty, this department does.

It appears we’ll have a few more years to debate this. We’ll see if anything changes with special teams in the offseason.

Turb in for Glennon was a change was going to happen, regardless of what Glennon did. He would have had to play lights out to prevent it, which he didn’t and I’m not sure that he can. I’ve never seen him as a NFL starting quarterback, even when he was at NC State.

Of course, Turb didn’t show me that he was a first rounder, much less a top 5. That was a reach and a head scratcher by the Bears, and I doubt Turb is going to do any better than Glennon.

For Glennon, there’s no shame in a 10 year career as a NFL back up. It’s the best thing for the body and the brain long term. He’ll have generational wealth, and hopefully still be able to spell his name and walk to the end of the block in 20 years.

I’m sure Glennon wants to compete, loves the game, wants to be out there with his teammates helping them win, and all of that, but the guy got paid. That’s the reason every single one of those guys in the NFL is playing. I’m happy for him.

As for Chicago, there’s a reason they’ve been a doormat since the 1980s. It is just a poorly run franchise. This series of moves is just another one. I’m glad I’m not a Bears fan.

It’s not the long snapper. Yeah we had one that wasn’t clean last week, but our issues are with the guy kicking it and maybe the coaching he’s receiving. We haven’t had a kicker that has put up good numbers at a previous stop since Huascka.

My advice? Grin and bear it, and cheer like crazy when one goes in. That’s what we’ve got, or seemingly what we are going to trot out.

My bigger concern is with the kickoffs and our strategy. Bam’s got enough leg to kick it out of the back. There’s a mountain of statistical evidence showing this is the best strategy. DD says he’s got a stats guy. Don’t get cute and try to pooch it to full backs at about the 35 hoping they drop it. They’re on the hands team for a reason. Kick it out of the back, avoid injuries and set up on defense at the 25. That one is pretty obvious and is something we CAN correct this year.

Oh, and enjoy the punting. That’s a part of kicking and we have a great one right now. There are very few spots for punters in the NFL, but Cole may have a shot at one of those. He can boom it and with some serious hang time. Looking at his bio, I wonder why he’s not place kicking:
Senior year stats: Converted 7-of-9 field goal attempts and 33-of-38 extra point tries for 54 points. Of his 42 kickoffs, 32 were touchbacks. No. 13 punter in the country by Kohl’s Kicking in the 2014 rankings. No. 5 kicker nationally…

Good pick up. We need some big players that can play, particularly if they can shoot. Creighton’s recent teams have shot well.

The whole thing stinks and institution have been created to try to bet on these prospects making boo ku dinero.

That’s exactly my point. The whole thing stinks and has for quite some time. We’ve lost way too many kids late to the blues for it not to stink………

To be fair, we’ve probably stolen some late as well. Maverik Rowan is a recent one that came to mind.

rthomas44: I think we’ll see Louisville move down and NC State move up a few slots. Louisville may fall out, or they may go to something like 24/25 with NC State somewhere around 20/21. The coaches and press know they have the returning Heisman winner and Petrino as coach.

It would take a lot of teams losing for us to move up that much. I haven’t looked at the game slate this weekend that closely but wouldn’t’ expect that many upsets.

Had we beaten S. Carolina, we’d be around 15th. Hopefully that’s the lone blemish on our record when we play Clemson. That’d be quite a game.

The play calling inside the 15 yd line must change. State converts there and they win by 30 going away. Hines was a big factor last night, better keep him healthy. The defensive line is a load but I called that at the start of last season.

State ran the ball, had one turnover and controlled the Louisville QB. The kicking game cost State 3 points which they will not be able to afford in the future.

Pretty good synopsis of the game, good and bad. I think that Hines and Finley played their way on to some draft boards last night given all the pro scouts in attendance. They see the little things, so I imagine some of our OL did as well (think the DL, JSam and Harmon were already there).

This was DD’s best win at NC State. I felt like this was a harder game for NC State given the circumstances than FSU was two weekends ago — short week, night game, huge expectations, do it all QB, much better opposing coach for in game adjustments, etc.. This thing was set up for Lucy yanking the football out from Charlie Brown.

To me the sweetest thing about last night was the third quarter. The team came right out aggressively and didn’t get out scored. Louisville is well coached and schemed. They’d really studied our offensive play book (Wakeyleaks? — haha) and knew what we liked to do in certain situations. I was worried during halftime about the second half, but the team rose to the occasion. Nice job.

Does anyone know if JaySam got injured? He seemed to disappear in the second half. Granted, Hines stepped up big time, and maybe we were just going with the hot hand, but there were times when I thought we’d get it to #1 and we either couldn’t, didn’t, or he just wasn’t out there (hard to tell on TV).

On to Pitt. I’m thankful we have the extra days to prepare. Something tells me that we’ll need them to get the team re-focused. We need a win there before two very difficult games in succession.

I thought by now Petrino would be sidelined due to sneakergate and we’d be facing some assistant.

Help me understand how the basketball scandal would get the football coach sacked in this short a period of time?

    1) don’t turn the ball over

    2) keep their QB in the pocket

    3) don’t lose the kicking game

    4) run the ball

I think that has to be the game plan.

I will prepare for nothing more than a wrist slap, and be pleasantly surprised if it is anything else.

At most, watch UNC not get to go to the tournament this year, and they may have to vacate some old wins and titles. It will be nothing that will set back the cheating machine.

Grey: I’m with you. I think Clemson is a loss. They should be expected to win every game they play until they get to the playoff. They could be upset though, so that’s why you play them, but I just don’t see that upset coming from NC State.

If we beat Louisville, we could have a very good season. We’d be +2 on my ACC 5-3 prediction (losses to Clemson, FSU and Louisville). We might trip up against WF or UNC, but we could go 7-1 in conference as well. We could go 10-2, but likely would be 9-3 if things continued at the same trend. Beat Louisville and the pressure builds, but it’d sure be nice to be the hunted as opposed to the hunters.

Lose to Louisville and it looks like 8-4 to me. We CAN beat Louisville, and a team that is breaking through would do so, but if we don’t we’re probably losing to Clemson and then one more along the way (ND, Wake, UNC). That’d be a solid season, and DD and staff would get an extension.

Chop: I hear what you are saying but I’m not sure I agree. We’re talking about a sport where PT dominates and 50% of the players transfer. The best way to get paid long term is to play early, blow up and get drafted due to potential, not sit on the bench somewhere hoping for PT junior year. By then the NBA is on to the next young thing.

Shrugs… It is coming off as sour grapes, but in life I always try to figure out the other party’s motivation, and to follow the money….

Back to business: I have to admit that my first thought was “Man, if they had only beaten SC”. But here they are at 24, good for them. I hope they get a good crowd for Louisville and TCB.

Those were my thoughts exactly. Had we beaten S. Carolina, we’d be in the top 20. Of course, who knows if we may have dropped another one.

Let’s hope the team is focused and ready to play 4 quarters on Thursday. We’ll need a complete effort to beat Louisville.

If we PAID Big Money… we GOTT f’d….

My thoughts exactly. If we paid, then that’s just another thing we suck at. We can’t even get that right.

I won’t say we didn’t pay. The whole thing is so dirty that I’d suspect 99% of the D1 programs have colored outside the lines. I would just say that it is curious how many kids we have lost to Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, Duke, etc. over the years. We’ll have been on a kid incredibly early, be the first to offer, be leading, etc. only to have them end up somewhere with one of the blues.

fan base at NC State as it attempts to rationalize a history of bad coaching hires and how keeping people in their seats during half time would change the trajectory of the program.

This part is absolutely correct. Some want to make some correlation with why Syracuse rolled us in the 3rd quarter with pass outs, and I think it is laughable. I’m sure not having pass outs really helped us against S. Carolina and FSU, when we also laid down in the 3rd.

Let’s face it folks. We get out coached at the half by most teams. It happened again Saturday. We were just lucky enough to have enough of a lead that it didn’t matter.

Personally I don’t care if people want to come and go as they please. They paid for a ticket to be at an event at a location from time A to time B. If they want to miss half of it because they want to, that’s fine with me. This is the type of policy that just make more people stay home.

And I say this as someone who maybe used a pass out once or twice in my many trips to CF. One of those times I clearly remember that I used it to go back and get a jacket.

    Grey: Killer instinct is:
    – Not dropping passes
    – Making that very first offensive drive of the first half count. Sure Syracuse scored on theirs, but come right down the field and punch it in, and they’d have likely folded.
    – Absolutely planting that QB the very first time he crossed the line of scrimmage.
    – Having the same sense of urgency at the start of the 3rd that we had at the end of the second.

In our three games against real teams, we’ve been absolutely man handled in the third period. So what exactly is it? Are we clearly out coached by every team we play at the half? Or are we flat, and taking our foot off the gas?

Two of those three games were away from Carter Finley. This has absolutely nothing to do with pass outs.

I’m very glad we won. We won’t win Thursday if we don’t show up in the third…

    The good?
    – Muat win game from the perspective of the program, and we got it done. Hopefully it is a sign of increased player and program maturity.
    – Fantastic offensive and defensive first half.
    – Gutted out some first downs when we absolutely had to have them.
    – Couple of great punts.
    – No turnovers.
    – Tuffy head on the field and helmets looked great. That’s actually a recognizable brand.
    – Wise kicked a long FG.

    Bad:
    – Players hurt
    – Seconday
    – Zero killer instinct. That 3rd quarter is exactly what I’ve been talking about.
    – Kick off “strategy.” Kick the ball out of the end zone if you can. I showed some stats on another site but it is staggeringly obvious that kicking the ball out of the back is the right play.
    – Officials: I didn’t have a problem with the penalties but they almost let that game get away.
    – Inabiluty to stop the QB from running.

Oh well, it is a win and I would take 7 more in the regular season just like it. Go Pack!

Haven’t seen the Orange play much. Does their tempo include many substitutions? Or do they try to avoid it? Our depth on DL is moot, at least for a series, if they avoid it.

Burn it all down and use real students. So sick of the one sided BS application of the rules anyway. The whole thing is a farce. No wonder these fools think they deserve to get paid, they just want a raise!

All the coaches, AD’s, insiders, reporters or anyone who knew this crap went on and have said nothing forever are just as guilty IMO. That includes the sanctimonious announcers (Bilas etc).

I hope it all blows up. Tear down the NCAA too for that matter, its a joke.

My thoughts exactly. I’d be 100% fine watching a bunch of Rudy’s play.
