I finished the season with the girls. We ended up 3-3-1. Our last four games they went 2-1-1. The last game we were down 12-4 going in the fourth quarter. We tied it 12-12 went into overtime and won 18-12. I have to admit it was a pretty exciting game. The defense finally clicked for them and they really stymied the other team. My littlest ones were some of the toughest. The biggest problems I had were on offense where its harder to hide a lack of skill. It was one of the more fun teams I have coached (I coached my son for 6 years and my daughter for 5). I would have liked to have more practice time to work on fundamentals more but I saw huge improvement from everyone of the girls.
The difference in coaching boys and girls is this simple, if boys are winning they will have fun. If girls are having fun they will win.

Am I the only one who thinks that something like this won’t work?

This isn’t football where the personnel is strictly divided. Heck, part of the problem is the way Gott’s own players perceive where his passion lies. Don’t get me wrong. I am glad someone realizes there is a problem… At least I hope someone in power does and hopefully they don’t think it’s strictly a talent issue.

This. Gott does not care about having a good defensive team. It’s evidenced by his “They gotta guard us too pal” philosophy. IWe are simply not going to win consistently without good defense. An assistant can teach defensive fundamentals but if Gott doesn’t put the emphasis on it, it won’t matter. I think best case is we bring in someone who can develop big men.

. Who in their right mind is going to sign up for a situation where their boss will definitely change in 2 years?

I could argue this from either side. For a successful coach, it doesn’t really matter who the AD is. And no coach is going to last long with mediocrity (unless Fowler finds another job) so it may not be a big deal. But it is important to know who you are working for and the unknown could easily complicate the coaching search.

But I just don’t see Woodson or Yow putting up with this level of suck for three more years.

Because it won’t stay at this level of suck. It will be a more palatable level of suck. It will be a defendable level of suck.
But we will still have ZERO titles of any kind.

It tells me that Gott wasn’t a candidate at that time, that Yow probably feels like he bailed her out, and that those two or linked for the duration of her time here

Bingo. The raise, the Reynolds project (a hall of fame for a school who hasn’t won anything in 30 years) and the letter are enough to give me pause about her decision making. And there is NO hope Gott is going anywhere any time soon. He is, proverbially, fat and happy.

The question is whether people think that game and this season are representative of the program. I think the whole thing boils down to record and our finishes in the ACC have gone 4th, 4th, 7th and now 13th.

I think there is another 7th place last year. Nonetheless there is a clear trend as the program has become completely Gott’s. He has done a decent job but I don’t think he has done anything especially noteworthy. There are definitely things he needs to improve on but he does not seem to either realize it or care (see point above). The hope when Gott was hired was 1) he learned and improved during his time off and 2) he would be able to recruit better players here. I just don’t see either of those things. Nor does it appear he is building a program. Every year we seem to start from scratch. Slow start and then the team improves and squeaks into the tournament. Then we have this year. What a dumpster fire. I don’t understand how any coach can let a year like this happen. We are bottom dwellers. This is all Gott’s team, his recruits, his coaching, his system.

He’s not going anywhere but we see his ceiling and we see his floor. Slightly higher ceiling than HWSNBN and lower floor.

Oh it will be better. It will be another squeak into the tournament year and you will see the same posters back on this site “calling people out” about how great Gott is. Like a 6th place finish and a win in the NCAA tournament is supposed to show us “haterzzz” something.

Today on, “Things that never happened…”

    LOL
Riiiight. It happened all last year. It also happened after the Maverick commit. But believe what you want.

Unless we have unexpected departures (read anyone but cat) – we should be good again and we will be perhaps his most talented team yet.

Color me skeptical. It wouldn’t shock me if next year was only marginally better than this one. It also wouldn’t shock me if someone else leaves early.

Lil Rickey, I love ya man, but ya gotta stop dreaming of me and get on with your life.

Didn’t know it was gonna be this way when I left you at the alter.

You…who wears the badge of ” keymaster. ” Your hypocriscy is only matched by the total lack of self-awareness.

Its great someone of your generation is willing to come out like this. I am sorry but I am happily married to my wife.

BTW I am very impressed with you using two big words. I didn’t think they even had big words during one room school house days.

Holy green goddamn. redisgood with the totes awesome data mining.
Hell, everybody’s leaving. I might be able to get my fantasy walk on dream as an undersized white PG who can’t shoot (and probably can no longer pass) after all.
    When the hell are tryouts???????????

Sounds like you fit in perfectly.

But that is more based on Gott’s past norms than anything else.

And the assumption that no one besides Cat leaves early?

I am pretty sure someone else will leave, they always do but I don’t see how you can factor that into any equation. The three I mentioned will not be going anywhere and the rest of the team is not exactly lighting the world on fire so if someone else leaves is it really going to have a huge impact? I am asking as I really have no idea.

From all appearances DSJ is the only freshman we will get. Rumors are we will be trolling the post grads for some more help.

If that’s the case, I find that unacceptable. Last year all we heard was this was the big recruiting year. I can look past bringing in 1 bench warmer for 1 year if you are stacked. But to only bring in a probable 1 and done the very next year is lunacy. If you are going to have a transfer heavy program, you should at least run your own ‘waiver wire” on the back end to enable talent development.

Jesus Christ than that means 2017 we will be historically bad.

We have to hope Henderson and Dorn are as good as the coaches believe them to be and that DSJ is as good as advertised. The concern is none of the three have played competitive ball in over a year and two are coming off of major injuries. Who knows about the big men.

Honestly, we don’t have much to base an opinion on either way, there are just too many unknowns. I would guess we will start really slow and then we will squeak into the tournament and win a game or two. But that is more based on Gott’s past norms than anything else.

I could use the crotchety “read up on it so you don’t appear uniformed” but I am not THAT big of an ass (this is not a shot at your pakfan). I don’t have a specific citation but it is what I gather from reading the other site. There is no single statement but recruiting targets for this year are nonexistent.
Gott has pulled a rabbit from his hat and he might again but right now it appears jucos and post grads are what we are focusing on for next year.

The OKC Golden State game Saturday night was GREAT basketball. I have watched more NBA this year than any since the Bird era. Combine the high level of team basketball with our sucking so bad and it is a no brainer.

I think most coaches find their “level”. The preference is you have a coach with a level that is high enough that a really good season is not an exception. To use Va’s example, the level should be high enough that it doesn’t take 3 top draft picks to have a great season.
Gott’s level is just too dang low. Middle of the pack regular season with a couple of wins in the tournament during his best years and deep troughs when things go bad. No hardware. Just not acceptable for me. Gott has not addressed the problems he had when he was at Alabama so I see no reason to believe he will make a step forward. We can give him another year or another ten and it will not matter. The only possible chance for a great season was to get that special class. That is what we thought we had for next year but that was blown up by Cal. And now, recruiting seems to have lost momentum.

Yeah that article says a lot. Gott’s priority is not defense and the team knows it.

I have been having to read your incoherent babbling posts for years so for you to question anyone else’s intelligence is comedy of the highest order. Your posts need an Ovaltine decoder ring to be classified as English.

I don’t have any trouble understanding CD-ese. What he said seemed real clear to me.

BTW I don’t really consider that to be getting hit much but it is more than I expect. I don’t believe that punishment would change the balance of power whatsoever. After getting the ballyhooed NOA, UNC proceeded to be nationally ranked in both sports, whip our tails in both sports and recruit better than us in both sports. I don’t expect that punishment or anything the NCAA deigns to do will impact that in the least.

I think it’s more likely we will see 2 year post season ban for football, 1 year for basketball and 3 for women’s basketball and some minor scholarships reductions. IMHO, that is something above a wrist slap, but it ain’t no hammer and discourages no one.

    pakfan,
If we see this or more then I will eat crow.

when something substantial actually happens to UNC then, and only then, will I admit I am wrong

    Quoting for posterity.

Have at it. I would like nothing more than to be wrong about this. I would love for UNC to be hurled into the desert for 30 years like we have been. I just don’t see it happening.

Another reason Henderson would be of little help this season:
    http://gopack.com/news/2016/2/25/freeman-update.aspx?platform=hootsuite

Well that sucks. I wonder if it is something he will be dealing with his whole like Sam Bowie or Yao Ming.
