True but not relevant because the same issue would exist with anyone that State is looking to hire. If State were looking for a new coach (and we’re not), then Archie already has everything that State would want.

There are many posters on this site who are certain they know how good Archie will be. Just ask them.

If Gott retired or were fired today, I would be in favor of hiring Archie. I just don’t think he is the slam dunk that so many make him out to be.

Archie’s ceiling is unknown but Gott’s has pretty well been defined. If you’re happy with Gott’s results, then you would want to keep him. If you’re not happy with what has produced over his entire career, then you’re ready for a shot at greatness rather than more of the same.

The discussion about Gott is really the Great Herb Debate all over again with one major exception. 1.21 JW did a great job outlining the deficiencies of Gott’s defensive “strategies” over his entire career. We never had a similar analysis of State’s stats under Herb.

This is a good discussion. Best on this site in a while. I agree on now being the best time to hire Archie (even though it will not happen). We don’t know for sure he will do better than Gott but IMO Gott and Herb had a similar floor and ceiling. I think the floor is worst case for Archie and if he hits that same ceiling then we will know it is NCSU’s ceiling and not the coach’s.

By waiting we are looking at a potential worst case scenario. We could end up with a poor talent pool.

IMO the higher percentage play is to stick with Gott and hope he breaks through into a higher tier of recruiting and that lifts the program.

The problem with this theory is this recruiting class was supposed to be the one that sent us to the higher tier. Two top five players in NC, one of which is a State fan and they were a “package”. The rumors were abounding about others joining those two but alas it was not to be. And that is why I finally decided Gott is not going to win a title here. He had a hanging curve ball and could not hit it out of the park. He just does not seem interested or able to address his shortcomings.

as often happens with such driven people there does come a point where for those in charge the pain is not worth the gain.

^fundamentally not a “personality” issue… but rather an organization/structural problem wherein good people out grow the organization or their position and don’t, for a variety of reasons, move on to the next challenge soon enough….

also in the specific case… adapting to changing — more “politically correct” — environment was out of the question…
    like a lot of s”successful” folks of Knight’s generation… that wasn’t a damn thing correct about them….

    ——————–

We’re looking at in all likelihood — SIX ACC squads in the Sweet 16…
which puts a somewhat more positive light on the quality of work by our coaches and players this season… if anyone wants to see it that way…

I guess losing to sweet 16 is better than losing to non but the distinction is turd polishing.

Boy’s, ya gotta remind yourselves that Ricky has his own way of regurgitating other’s written thoughts.

How is it a coach, like Izzo, can’t teach a fundamental like pivot foot?

LMAO. (But killed most of my brackets, so it ain’the THAT funny.)

I thought age brought wisdom. [Shrugs shoulders]

All the talk of the ‘Cuse getting a gift of a bid – they are sure looking worthy right now. Lot of time left (10 minutes) but up 15 on Dayton.

Bittersweet – really want Archie to do well, but also for the few who think Archie is the 2nd coming – please stop if he cant even get past a bad Cuse team.

Hard to believe that the savior in waiting of our program is getting his a** handed to him by a coach that is so stupid that he normally only goes 2-3 deep off of his bench.

Its too bad Arch can’t coach his way into a losing record and 13th place. He would be celebrated.

The Pack have declined the invite. Probably the best thing as those have said earlier. Cat needs to rest and get healthy for the NBA workouts, and everyone else just needs to get healthy and work on developing their games for next year. Gott and staff need to hit the recruiting trail and find us a couple of bigs as well as locking up some guys for 2017.

Hopefully Gott pulls out a rabbit because right now there is very little chatter about this years class.

If the only measurement is effort then why bother with scholarships.

Yes Va, yes. I for one am ever so…well f that, not so patiently waiting for all this MONEY to pay off in the W-L column.

I think it has hurt more than helped. The LTRs forced people to buy the tickets every year or give up the seats they paid so much for. Thus there is always a steady source of income no matter how bad the teams are.

Its being turned into a “hall of fame”. Given we haven’t won anything since we left I guess its kind of appropriate.

    Might might might
Even with all of those mights, you still have us “squeaking” into the tournament.

I was simply suggesting it would make the possibility more likely, vs only David Thompson would have helped. Nuance man, nuance.

I get the nuance, I am simply suggesting if you are going to play the “what if” you might as well go for it. Even in your made up world we only squeak into the tournament. We can’t even win a title in our own fans hallucination. I want a “what if” that ends up with Cat cutting the national championship net while standing on Tyler Hansbrough’s empty head while Adele sings “Hungry like the Wolf” and the State fans in Raleigh are celebrating around the worlds largest bond fire which consists of the News and Observer burning to the ground. Do it right man, do it right 😉

Time for the most interesting season of all: the offseason.

Hopefully it goes better than the others. I think Cat is gone but if everyone else comes back we should at least have a decent year next year.

Unless you are talking about DT in his prime, this team was not one player away from making the NCAAT.

    Agree to disagree.

Win a few more games, which could have included Duke once, plus avoid a couple of bad losses, we might not be playing on Tuesday. We might pick up a couple of wins in the tourney. We might squeak in to the NCAAs. It’s not like we were a world away from being competitive.

Oh, you can’t chalk up +9 in the win column for Henderson. It doesn’t work like that.

Surely it would have been a better season, but every single digit loss??

and when the injuries happened to us (that contrary to what you may think aren’t that unusual) we were left with a skeleton’s crew with a very limited skillset.

We have actually been very fortunate during Gott’s tenure to not have many injuries. I think some of that is a testament to good strength and conditioning and some is just good fortune. But they are going to happen and we need to be prepared for it.

We also look to have a good baseball season, along with the wrestling championship. As for basketball, we still have a women’s team that is having a successful season, and headed to the NCAA tourney.

Women’s team is something. At least they are winning.

Yeah 2034 sounds like an an accurate guess for how long Gott keeps his job and never wins a title.

I bought a oneplus one a year or so ago. It has all of the specs of the expensive phones for a fraction of the cost. I am like wuf in that I cannot justify paying that much.
BTW what does everyone pay for their cell service? I have t mobile and pay about $80 for two lines, unlimited everything but slowed after 3GB.

Mercifully I am at work and unable to watch what sounds like a poop show.

One question since Gott “earned” his raise for the past four seasons, does he now get a salary cut for this abortion he popped out this year?

It would be great to see him return but I don’t see what he could do next year to increase his draft status.
It would be almost impossible to improve his stats. He could win more and maybe get ACC player of the year but that means nothing for going pro. With DSJ here he would be relegated to SG and he will not play SG in the pros. Honestly I just don’t see an upside (from a professional standpoint to coming back.

The difference in coaching boys and girls is this simple, if boys are winning they will have fun. If girls are having fun they will win.

If this is a “Coach Rick” original line… then it’s an instant classic!
If not, then it’s still the best I’ve heard regarding the difference between coaching boys and girls….

    —————————

Great Job on the turnaround Coach Rick…
I was feeling a certain uncertainty from you after the first couple of games…

Thanks. The uncertainty was because I had so many girls that had never played. On my past teams I always liked to give each girl a chance to score. I would let them run point and then run plays to get them open. On this team I could not even attempt to do it as I only had 1 1/2 players who could even dribble. But they improved a lot and I changed the way I do things and it ended up working. Thanks for the advice.

As to the saying, I wish I had said that originally. I am not nearly that clever.
Another great line I heard on the differences in coaching boys and girls is this… Boys will do everything but what you tell them to do. Girls will do exactly what you tell them to do and nothing more.

Maybe add Seth Greenburg and we can corner the “fired, ex-TV announcer coach” market.
