Yeah, I don’t know about a firing discussion, but I think it”s legit to discuss his strengths and weaknesses.
One weakness I think Gott has is his inability to relate to the players on any kind of a personal level. Most great college basketball coaches don’t hesitate to rip their players’ heads off during games and practices, but you also see the great coaches seem to genuinely care for them. I think to Gott, his players are just that, players. I’ve read books about coaches like Wooden, Knight, K, etc. And they all keep in touch with their former players, and you can see they had developed a bond.
A couple of telling moments this year. One was when Gott was being honored pre=game for some kind of milestone, and the players completely ignored it. They didn’t watch, they didn’t applaud, they just kept shooting. Another was in an interview I saw with Beejay where the interviewer asked Beejay to tell us something the coach doesn’t know about him. Beejay just laughed and said the coach doesn’t know anything about me. There are other things too like not playing Des Lee at the end of the game on senior night when we were up a lot and his mother was in the stands.
I thinks these types of things lead to inconsistent performances and players eventually leaving. He’s not going to change, that’s for sure. But I think that is one thing that will prevent him from taking the team to the next level.
redisgoodParticipantYep, and fortunately Junior is the type of player who can carry a team. I’m predicting he’ll go top 5 in the 2017 NBA draft. Torin Dorn is a pretty good player, and hopefully we will have a fully healthy Henderson. I also think an off season in the weight room is going to make Mav a really good player. We will still have some big holes to fill, but the team will be better, although I guess that’s not saying a lot.
redisgoodParticipantA guy who shoots 20% from 3 probably shouldn’t be jacking up 10 of them a game.
redisgoodParticipantMan, Caleb sure can shoot the 3 ball. Struggling with the sinking part of it though, and that part is kind of important.

UNC is not going to get touched. Sad to say
I disagree. Rythmnic Gymnastics is going to get pummeled.
redisgoodParticipantThat would be great if true, but unfortunately it’s not. He’s still a long way off.
redisgoodParticipantI remember Gott saying before the Wake game, we’ve got to come ready to play. And this is how the game started:
Abu – missed shot
Abu – missed shot
Abu – foul
Abu –turnover
Abu – foul
Martin – turnover
Freeman – turnoverIf we’re playing Duke, Carolina, ND, Virginia, etc. we’re behind 10-0 before the 1st media timeout. I’m stating the obvious here, but that isn’t coming out ready to play.
We cannot do this tonight (or any other night).
redisgoodParticipantBTW….DID you know that the U of Phoenix Field is retractable and they put it outside to get sun and nourishment? That also lets them use the venue for concerts WITHOUT the heavy bill for “returfing”
I thought their field was online, and only used for Madden 2016.
redisgoodParticipantEliah Drinkwitz from Boise is the new OC. At first blush it looks like a great hire!
redisgoodParticipantYes, what Cat is doing is phenomenal. He’s unstoppable.
But I am going to say this knowing the flak is coming, but his play is doing the TEAM no favors. That’s not on Cat. That’s squarely on the staff. He’s doing whatever he can to keep is in games, and without him we’d be lucky to have won a game. But everybody is just standing around watching the Cat show, and it’s not good for the future of this program.
Every team has three or four guys that can put the ball on the floor and create their own shot. We had two, but one of them got hurt, so we only have one. Cat can pass it until his whiskers fall out, but he’s passing it to guys who can’t do anything with it, so they eventually pass it back to him. Soon there is only 5 seconds left on the clock, and Cat has to go to work. Some of it is recruiting the right players, some of it is keeping the right players, and some of it is bad luck.
Edit: but I do think Mav has shown signs he can develop into more than a catch and shoot player.
redisgoodParticipantMan, I feel for Cat.
redisgoodParticipant27% shooting now.
redisgoodParticipantSome nice halftime adjustments.
redisgoodParticipantWe’re shooting 10-34 (29%).
Up from 25% in the 1st half last game. This has to be one of the worst shooting college teams I’ve seen. Mav and Caleb have their moments, but game after game they dig such a big hole with so many misses. It’s incredible we’re only down by two. And Nestor better call the game the same with Wake on defense at his end in the 2nd half.
redisgoodParticipantNot getting Bam is a real blow to next year, but on the positive side, we will be adding another very good guard in Torin Dorn to go along with DS Jr., and hopefully a full and healthy year from Henderson.
redisgoodParticipantThere are many issues for sure, but it is hard to take thinking free throws stand between 0-2 and 2-0 in the ACC.
redisgoodParticipantIt’s taken me all season but I’ve finally figured out the team’s problems. Cannot score from outside, cannot score from inside, cannot score from the free throw line. Gott just needs to fix those three things and the team will be in business.
redisgoodParticipantLooks like Lorenzo Brown is getting a 10 day contract with Phoenix, and will be re-united with TJ. I hope he sticks. Would love to see them playing together again.
redisgoodParticipantUnless of course we win it all this year, then the next time will be many years away.
redisgoodParticipantI just hope the epilogue isn’t “We didn’t come out ready to play”.
redisgoodParticipantMG on tonight’s game:
“They’ve got some good players and we have to be ready to play”.
That’s why he’s getting paid the big bucks.
redisgoodParticipantI saw an article last year where Gregg Marshall said the NC State job was the closest he ever came to leaving Wichita State.
“Declining to name all the schools, Marshall says he has received several firm job offers from schools in the big five conferences, some offering close to $2 million a year. The closest he came to leaving Wichita State, he says, was probably in 2011 when he says N.C. State offered him the job.”
redisgoodParticipantHe caught 15 total passes against FSU and Clemson, and 10 total in the other 11 games. 10 in 11 games for a pre-season All ACC tight end?
redisgoodParticipantActually he’s 3rd with 25 catches (Ramos was 2nd). And he had 7 more than the 7th leading receiver. So basically there was JSam (65) and everyone else. Definitely under utilized as a receiver.
What % of plays did JSam line up at TE? I know that was his “Official” position, but that is a bit of a stretch.
redisgoodParticipantYep, that was frustrating no doubt. Watch him light it up at the next level.
