When you start at 5, that’s a little hard to maintain in your first few years. 12 + Turner and 18 + Lacey for encores isn’t chopped liver. 5 to 25 to 55 would not be a good trend.
04/09/2014 at 7:28 AM in reply to: TJ Warren declares for NBA draft; future of NC State basketball #50984redisgoodParticipantLol. 44 is on a crusade. He’s SFN’s version of Al Sharpton, with a bit of undertaker mixed in.
redisgoodParticipantCat Barber touted in a CBSsports.com article this morning listing their top 5 breakout candidates for 2014-2015. I think he will be as well. He showed flashes as a freshman, and was very good at the end. Classic signs of someone who will take it to the next level as a sophomore.

redisgoodParticipantLast year’ steam of supposed stars, mostly Sid’s recruits were 256 in the country in scoring defense. This year’ steam largely made up of freshmen, improved to 151. Obviously still mediocre, but a huge jump. It will improve further by not having Tyler on the court. And the freshmen will be sophomores. Gott is recruiting the type of player willing to play defense. I guess we’ll see how next year plays out, but I’m predicting we will be a decent defensive team.
redisgoodParticipantSorry for the added post. My edit feature disappeared.
A quick check of a couple other PG shows Cat’s numers were significantly better in all catrgories than Shane Larkin’s as a freshman, and not terribly behind those of Trey Burke. With Burke the big difference was in points and minutes played. Burke scored 6 more a game, but played 10 more minutes.
When someone, I think beachbill says Gott has a lot of work ahead to develop a point guard (or something to that effect), I just scratch my head and wonder why someone would make a statement like that. Cat as a freshman is on a par with elite level points guards.
And you can look at a season holistically, but when you do that, you are including a significant freshman learning curve especially in the early part of the season. To the point of minutes, Tyler may have started, but Cat still played more minutes each game than Tyler (about 23 to 17).
There is a freshman PG for UCLA, Zach Lavine. He is projected as a 1st rounder in this year’s draft. Cat’s numbers were better than Lavine’s accross the board.
redisgoodParticipantAnother Cat comparison. Shabazz Napier averaged 7.8 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.8 tunovers a game playing 23.8 minutes as a freshman. Cat averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.7 turnovers playing 24.2 minutes a game.
redisgoodParticipantI don’t get it. It’s almost like some guys here are intentionally ignoring Cat’s development during the year.
Just take the 3 ACC tournament games against Miami, Syracuse, and Duke as an example:
Points Assists Turnovers Steals Minutes
Cat 21 14 5 4 71
Tyler 7 11 2 0 55Like I say, I’m not getting the gloom and doom over Cat as our PG for next year.
Edit: I guess I don’t have the pasting figured out, but it is points 21 to 7, assists 14 to 11, turnovers 5 to 2, steals 4 to 0, and minutes 71 to 55.
redisgoodParticipantOur fanbase (maybe others do it too, I’m only a member of one fanbase) has a frustrating habit of harping on these kinds of things: players that transferred, coaches that left, coaches that were fired, players that were recruited, players that were not recruited, coaches that were never hired, etc…. To me, it’s not worth my mental health to worry about these things that I have no control over. If you run with the Pack, then I’m with you all the way. If you don’t, well, bye.
+ 1,000%
redisgoodParticipantNo, 44 is right. Just look at UMass. They continue to be a national power even though Calipari has long since left. Any player would kill to go to Butler. The other guys are just settling by coming to State.
redisgoodParticipantTyler’s “get the ball to TJ” style worked well this year. No TJ means we will need a PG who can create off the dribble, and Tyler ain’t it. And contrary to certain opinions, I think we are blessed with a damn fine point guard for next year. Oh, and we still have a 5 star McDonald’s All American to back him up when he needs a rest. I’m happy with that.
I don’t know if anyone had a chance to see the National HS championships at MSG these past few days, but if you did, you know the Martins are stars in the making for us as well.
redisgoodParticipantI looked at minutes played by guys returning, and last year it was round 20%. This year it is around 80%. Losing TJ is obviously huge, but the experience we have coming back should have some value. Last year we had to replace 80% of our scoring, this year it will be 45%. A pretty big number, but not terrible. I’m guessing TJ’s 25 will be replace by Lacey’s 15, and the other guys can easily make up the difference. Cat playing 30 minutes a game should raise his average by 5 or 6, and we should get more scoring from the bench.
Next year’s team will be better defensively, and that will help as well.
Like most, I really don’t know what to expect next year. I’m thinking we will have a decent year. The freshmen all know the system now, and none of them were exactly chopped liver anyway. The thinking is college players usually make their biggest improvemet from freshman to sophomore (TJ did, Tyler didn’t), so overall I’m pretty excited about the upcoming year.
redisgoodParticipantBrad Stevens was mocked by other “cool” coaches, including our own, for studying at a corner table while they drank at the hotel bar. I promise he doesn’t care. He’s a winner. Winner’s don’t care what losers think of them.
Wow. That’s an interesting story. Any kind of link so I can read the whole thing? I’m particularly interested in the part about Gottfried mocking Brad Stevens.
redisgoodParticipantSome more from Bennett:
“Q: Joe and Akil (Mitchell) are the last two remaining members of your first recruiting class. Is it kind of rewarding to watch them be a part of such a successful season so far, considering all the ups and downs (and transfers) there have been over the last few years?A: Of course, yeah. That was my first recruiting class. I got the job and I remember the vision and what we talked about was trying together. There were six of them when they came in, and those are the only two left. We really talked about trying to be part of turning Virginia basketball around and bringing a level of quality that would be noticeable. We used this a lot: We’re going to have learn to lose together first, before we win.
We’re going to have to go through ups and downs. You go through adversity when you’re at the top. But you’re trying to build a program and the fact that those guys stayed so faithful, have been through the hard stuff and kept that vision in their mind … now last year and this year, they’re having some success. There’s nothing more gratifying for me than to see the players who have stuck with it get to see that and be part of turning something around. I’m very thankful they’re experiencing it.”
redisgoodParticipantOff topic, my apologies. But a few keep talking about our transfers like it is some kind of disease spawned by Gottfried.
Virginia and Tony Bennett (who I hope people will accept as having a successful season), had a hellacious time with transfers when he took over.
“Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett is only 42 years old, but he cited a generational shift Monday when asked why college basketball players are transferring at a higher rate.
“It’s a different time, it really is,” Bennett said of players who desire more playing time early in their careers. “I think everybody goes through that, it’s just guys are acting on it more now than they did in the past.”
Most of Gotts transfers were not his recruits. I don’t think it’s fair to compare programs that have had coaches in place for a while with coaches coming into a program. Gott had a major rebuilding job to do on a number of fronts, and this is just fallout from that.
redisgoodParticipantUnbelievably offensive nicknames for what is supposed to be our team. In particular, BSW is so incredibly racist, it is hard to believe any African American actually comes to NCSU. Nice job of making State fans look like a bunch of idiot rednecks. Totally shameful.
Lol. Tyler calls himself “White Boy” on twitter.
redisgoodParticipantIf Anya can get into any kind of shape, the kid will be a force in the ACC. He was this year, but his PT was just too limited to get much recognition.
Lacey will likely slide over to the PG position when Cat needs a breather. He will be an adequate PG, but clearly a much better SG. He is also not overly quick or athletic, so Dez will get some minutes if Lacey is getting abused defensively.
A rotation of Cat, Lacey, Turner, Freeman/Washington, and Anya is pretty good. My personal opinion is Washington will make the biggest freshman to sophomore improvement of them all. Hard to say how Abu and the Martins will do, but at least we know they were all great high school players.
Overall I see us in the 5/6/7 slot in the ACC, but trending upward with young improving talent.
redisgoodParticipantThere is no doubt Gott needs to shoulder some of the blame in this and a few other transfers. He’s not a “touchy feely” kind of coach, and not the greatest communicator in the world with his players. Combine that with all the “help” players get from family, friends, and handlers, and that makes for a pretty combustible situation.
I doubt Gott will ever change, so he needs to continue to recruit at a very high level to offset the inevitable. I can almost guarantee after next year we will lose at least one from Freeman, Anya, Washington, Abu, and the Martins.
redisgoodParticipant^so you’re looking at numbers for all varsity sports not just D1 (upper level) basketball…
…did you count Ryan Harrow one time or three times ??
—————
hey guys…
dontworryaboutit24 ….
CUZ is gonna play Point Guard next year !!!
No, I was just referring to D1 basketball. And you are right, guys like Harrow skew the numbers.
redisgoodParticipant<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>redisgood wrote:</div>
Through the course of a 4 year cycle, 40% of all D1 players transfer.hey red… I ain’t doubting you one bit on this… but you Gott a source? More importantly, have you a gott a trend for this stat over say the last 10 years…
I’m curious how the 40% looks over a longer time frame…
The rough numbers are, 4,500 D1 scholarship players, and around 450 a year transfer, so that is 1,800 transfers over a 4 year cycle. That’s 40%. I think transfers have been trending up, but I don’t have a feel for how much.
redisgoodParticipantDevonte Graham may be in play if and when he gets his release from App. He won’t play for them under any circumstances, so the only question beside where will he end up is, will he have to sit a year or be eligible to play immediately. I think it is a bit of a long shot for getting him, but it is a possibility.
redisgoodParticipantCat is not transferring. I know this with 100% certainty. Tyler lost the war.
redisgoodParticipantremember this video? The lies start at 7:00.
Not only is it not a huge red flag, it isn’t even a pink handkerchief. How many D1 transfers were there last year, 500? It’s just a fact of life. Through the course of a 4 year cycle, 40% of all D1 players transfer. Why would our program be immune? Blame the coach? Hardly.
Edit: not sure how this ended up here. I meant to attach it to 44’s irrational ranting.
redisgoodParticipantTransfers happen in every program. Despite Lewis leaving, Gott has built a solid foundation. I don’t see why some are concerned. Two guys wanted to be the #1 point guard, and Lewis obviously was going to lose that battle. No different than Kendall Marshall and Larry Drew. So we only have 2 Macdonald All Americans in the back court next year. And Freeman, Washington, Anya, Abu, Turner, Caleb and Cody Martin, and Dez Lee. Yep, Gott sucks at this.
redisgoodParticipantWhen I say stop, I don’t mean defensive stop, but rather his next destination. Anyone who is at the games sitting near the bench, and probably on TV as well, can easily see Tyler has checked out. A wall has been built between Lewis and Gottfried, and no amount of kumbaya is going to beak down that wall. In the Pitt game, Gott had to tell Tyler to get his ass on the court towards the end when Tyler initially balked at going in for mop up duty.
Anyway, my guess is UNC Charlotte. He is from that area, his brother played for them, and their point guard will be a senior while Tyler is sitting out. I think that will be a much better fit for him.
A few people were pissed at me when I posted this a few months ago, but it was inevitable. And I still say it will be Charlotte.
