I know the media is going nuts over a couple of running backs, but I think Watson may be the best player in the country. I see no weaknesses in his game at all. Strong arm, accurate, good decision maker, great runner. He has all the tools.

No comments on the end of first half sequence?

When we got the ball to start the sequence, I said hopefully we can score and not leave Clemson any time to score. Then right before the 3rd down play, I said this could be the play of the game. There is no doubt in my mind the game turned on that sequence at the end of the 1st half.

I thought the crowd seemed fairly quiet most of the game. I was thinking and hoping it would be a lot louder and electric atmosphere. Everyone did the obligatory stand up and make noise on Clemson’s 3rd downs, but it was pretty calm outside of that. It almost felt like a Carolina wine and cheese atmosphere. I went home absolutely hoarse, but I think I was in the minority. I’m on the 50 yard line, but up high, so maybe it was louder at field level.

I’m still trying to figure out how State fans were dragged into Joe Ovies’s “narrative.” SMH.

Apart from being a pathetic State baiting troll, he knows nothing about sports. He knows music, he knows video games, but he knows absolutely zero about sports. I’d love to be able to listen to a local sports radio talk show, but as long as he’s a part of it, I just can’t do it.

Man, this is such a big game for both football and basketball recruiting. So many top recruits will be there. Win or lose, I’m hoping for a close, exciting game to make it a great atmosphere the whole afternoon.

Baseball does have an extensive minor league system. Basketball has the NBA D league and hundreds of very good professional teams around the world. Forget that football does not have an entry after high school option and the difference in physical requirements of a football vs. basketball player. College is the NFL’s D league. Go ahead and tell today’s top 100 basketball recruits they can either turn pro now or they have to sign up for three years of college and see what happens.

The NCAA Oversight Committee has put forward a much more reasonable and workable model. It will be voted on in a few months, and hopefully guys like Swofford will get outvoted and the recommendation will be adopted.

I think the baseball model is worse than the current basketball model. An 18 year old kid gets one crack at deciding, then he has to wait until after his junior year in college? That’s borderline insane, and will make the problem even worse, because it is highly unlikely the majority of guys who aspire to the NBA will commit to 3 years of college. A whopping 5% of major league baseball players go the college route. This would erode the college game to the extent it would be like watching JUCO basketball. I say the commissioner isn’t thinking straight. This is backward rather than forward thinking.

The Pack held a “secret scrimmage” against Richmond last week. By all accounts Cat and Terry Henderson were standouts in the game.

This really doesn’t fit here, and it is not worthy of its own thread, but I find stuff like this baffling:

5 star tight end Chris Clark commits to UNC then de-commits (perfectly understandable). He then commits to Michigan and again de-commits soon thereafter. He eventually signs with UCLA and decides to transfer one game into the season. A few weeks ago he commits to Syracuse, and yesterday he de-committed.

Why would any other coach offer this kid a scholarship? I don’t care how talented he is. That’s just plain nuts.

Stranger things have happened I guess, but the eye test says Clemson’s strengths are perfectly matched to our weaknesses, so I don’t see how this one is even close. I will take Clemson and give the points.

I don’t believe in curses, jinxes, or even bad luck. The current team doesn’t care and isn’t bothered by what has gone on in the past. They are healthy, prepared, and a superior team. I will be there to proudly watch them thump the Deacons.

What the heck has happened to Grinnage? I honestly thought he had the makings of a star, and showed flashes of it last year. 5 catches thus far. Is it him, the play calling, JB, all three or something else?

Oh I can’t wait to see the unrealistic expectations meet reality. The denials and excuses will be flying around here.

I’m struggling to figure out what this means.

I cannot speak for Jig but my guess is similar to the football predictions, people are going to expect too much from this team. This team has some potential but the loss of Lacey really hurts. IMO there are some flaws that will keep us from being an “upper tier” team. I think we will make the tournament but with Lacey we could have been a real threat.
As to the denials and excuses, again you can look at football as an example. Read the preseason thread and the most recent game thread.

Just to be clear this is in no way a ciriticism of Gott just my initial evaluation of the team.

Yeah, I tend to agree with this assessment. The loss of Lacy is huge, and Kyle brought some strong intangibles to the table. A lot has to happen for this team to be really good. Injury free Cat, Henderson filling the Turner role, improvements from the Martins and Abu, emergence of another ball handler, a solid contribution from Rowan, and Beejay adding some scoring and rebounding to his shot blocking skills. I see no problem making the tourney, but a few things have to break the right way to go beyond that.

    From a father’s perspective:

“His story is not mine to tell. But I do know the facts. I do know that his mistake was one of naivete, not of malice. I do know that he had no idea that he had done anything he thought was wrong, let alone the NCAA.

If and when he’s ready, he’ll fill in the blanks.

Football has a finite shelf-life for all who play the game. The smartest of those who play use the game to sharpen life skills. When I saw my son walk to that podium to tell a room full of adults that he was sorry for his mistake, I knew that Will had used the game to become a better man.

Will loves his teammates and the University of Florida the way the most loyal SEC fans feel about their school. This crisis in Will’s life has brought out the best in him as he has asked me to help him find opportunities to serve others while he waits on adults who don’t even know him to decide his immediate future. He is the calming voice in our family, assuring all of us that he’s OK and that God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers. He doesn’t see his world falling apart, he sees his world changing and he is ready to embrace it and tackle it with the same ferocity as his teammates have been attacking opposing offenses.

As a family, we have been overwhelmed by the encouragement of so many friends and strangers. Again, crisis brings out the best in some people.

Unfortunately, crisis brings out the worst in others. It’s disappointing to see the comments of those all too happy to kick a young man who has just had his life turned upside down and vilify him as if he intentionally did something wrong. I’m sure most of those folks are generally good people and just see it as having fun at someone else’s expense and in a twisted way supporting their own team. Others just troll looking for something or someone to hate on. I doubt that many of these people stop to think what that would feel like if it were happening to their own son.

And to those people, my answer is yes, I am still very proud of my son. More so today than ever before! #ProudDad”

^ We are currently 64 and play WF 109, Clemson 14, BC 113, FSU 11, Syracuse 38, and Carolina 43 the rest of the way. (I’m shocked Syracuse is 38). 3-3 looks like the most likely outcome to me.

Two frustrating losses. There seems to be so many holes to plug:

    – Wide receivers can’t get separation
    – Jacoby not looking their way when they do
    – Jacoby getting pressured on virtually every pass
    – Our D line not getting any pressure on the other QB, regardless of the opponent
    – Last year Grinnage looked to be a star in the making. What happened? Injured early on, but is 100% now
    – Odd play calling
    – Dumb penalties
    – Soft defense

Last year the coach showed an ability to make adjustments during the bye week, and there were even more holes to plug than this year. I think we will see more aggressive play calling on both sides of the ball from here on out. The dink and dunk on offense, and the “bend but don’t break” defense clearly aren’t working. I just wish it wouldn’t take a bye week to figure that out.

Roo, just a correction. The team practiced outdoors in the rain all week instead of indoors.

Very disappointing. I hated a lot of the play calling. Jacoby had a bad day, the coaches had a bad day. Such a winnable game. As has been the pattern all season, a few plays saw our receivers breaking downfield wide open, and Jacoby never looked their way, despite having time to do so.

A lot of improvement needed somehow before Friday.

Speaking of the indoor facility, DD said they practiced outdoors all week. He wanted them to get used to playing in wet weather. He also said they did a great job of it. I can’t help but think these guys are absolutely prepared for tomorrow’s game.

I know it will change 150 times before Saturday, but WRAL’s weather page now say high of 73, low of 67, and a chance of rain, possibly off and on showers for Saturday.

    I’ll take it!

4 star wide receiver Kelvin Harmon announcing at 2:30 today. It’s between us, SC, and hometown Rutgers. The consensus is SC with us a close second. I hope we get him. We need receivers!

    A letter from Shad:

“I would like to start off with an apology; it was never my intention to bring disgrace to this community, university or the staff. I am elated at the opportunities that I’ve had here at the University, and I deeply apologize for the position that I’ve put you in.

Throughout my time here at NC State I haven’t always made the best decisions, but from those decisions I have learned unteachable lessons. The lessons we learn while getting knocked down are the ones that stick with us when we get back up.

I can’t express in words the passion that I have for my Pack family; I will be humbly cheering from the stands as the team continues to do the unthinkable. I will continue to train my mind body and soul as I prepare for the 2016 draft.

I assure you all that the lessons I’ve learned here at NC State will stay with me always. I am a man of faith and I believe that everything happens in God’s plan; it is never my place to question him, but only to accept that which is given. I will do my absolute best to assure that you, future coaches and fans, receive the best Shadrach Thornton possible.

In closing, I’m apologetic for that which has occurred; I’m thankful for that which I have learned; and I am joyful for whatever God has to come.

    Be Blessed”
