Whatever the reason, it was not good. Certainly to be expected from a freshman. Seth Greenberg sat through a practice and noted Mav’s D would be a concern. I’m sure he will get much better as the year progresses. Also, I don’t think the staff intended for him to play so many minutes, but Henderson’s injury and the fact nobody else was scoring forced their hand.
redisgoodParticipantI think ’87 captured it brilliantly. This game seemed doomed from the beginning.
– We started out missing everything, including foul shots, and they hit everything.
– The ref in the end we were defending in the 1st half was calling every hand check, the guy on the other end was not. So while we benefitted from the calls in the 2nd half, the damage was already done.
– Henderson got hurt and Rowan came in. For every 2 he scored he gave up 4 on defense.
– Cat was not good. I have no idea why, but we was just not good. I’ve not seen him play that bad in a long time.
– They were a well coached, experienced team, we played a lot of playground basketball.
– Everytime we started to get a tiny bit of momentum, someone would miss a critical shot or commit a turnover. W&M would do down and score. End of rally. Rowan missed a ton of potential momentum building threes. They have a lot to learn from this game, and I think as the season progresses they will. Once Mav learns to play D, he is going to be a very good player. He has so much more to his game than Scott Wood for example. He exceeded Wood’s 4 year total of drives to the basket in this one game. Fortunately we play a much weaker team than W&M Sunday, but man, there is so much that needs to be fixed moving forward.
redisgoodParticipantHaha, I couldn’t get the edit feature to work. I guess it doesn’t become “Basketball” until ACC season begins.
redisgoodParticipantYep, that’s one reason why getting Rawle would be so important. He’s a combo guard who could serve as a great back up. Dorn could help a bit there as well.
redisgoodParticipantHe’s going to graduate early and enrol in January. That will allow him to rehab under school’s supervision and use the school’s facilities. He will also be able to observe practices which should help make him more ready to play when next season starts. A smart move all around by Dennis.
redisgoodParticipantDSJ, Torin Dorn, Henderson, Rowan, Caleb, Cody, Freeman and Kirk. That’s a hell of a nucleus. Depending what happens with Abu, Beejay, Bam, and Rawle, this team could be a legitimate national contender by the time the dust settles.
redisgoodParticipantDD says Johnny Frasier is playing unbelievable now. Man, Frasier, Hines, Dayes, and Samuel next year? That is going to be some kind of exciting!
redisgoodParticipantI think if you asked DD over a beer, he would say his biggest regrets this year are the inability to bring in a quality wide receiver, and losing Shad. Obviously losing Dayes and Bo Hines hurt a lot as well, but all programs lose players. I’m fairly sure the WR recruiting deficiency is the primary reason the WR coach was let go at the end of last year. Hopefully DD can bring in some high level recruits to catch the ball.
redisgoodParticipantHere is the difference to me – in the past we would play WF or BC and I wasn’t sure if we would win or lose, even in Raleigh. This year there was no doubt in my mind we would win those games. We competed and could have won any of the three games we lost. I see a lot more talent on the field on both sides of the ball. I’m seeing real progress in the caliber of play. Still lots of holes to be sure, but DD’s recruiting is gradually filling them in. Yes, I think we will get our butts kicked on Saturday, but that won’t diminish the confidence I have in the head coach going forward. I’m truly excited about where this program is headed.
redisgoodParticipantYou guys aren’t going to suck me in. Get me all hopeful, think we have a chance, then whammo, reality strikes. No sir, not going to happen.
redisgoodParticipantGame time vs. the Noles is 12:30.
The Syracuse game as well. Sure would appreciate a few more 3:30 or evening games.
redisgoodParticipantYep, I was glad to see that. Having Richardson back will help for sure. Nice to see DD didn’t ruin a kid’s future for one mistake.
redisgoodParticipantI wish I shared your view, but I just don’t see it happening. Against Wake I said we would win easily because we had superior athletes and were a better overall team. This time around FSU has the superior athletes and are the better team on both sides of the ball. I think we lose by 3TDs or more. Hopefully I am completely wrong. I will gladly eat crow.
redisgoodParticipantI’m trying to temper my enthusiasm about Cat because it was just an exhibition game, but as well as Cat played in the back half of last year, he looks like he has gone to a whole new level. He had a floor presence that I’ve not seen from him, and his shot looks so much improved. Maybe he was deferring to Lacey last year? I don’t know what it is, but he definitely looks like the real deal this year.
redisgoodParticipantYeah, I was confused about that too. Even though it was free admission, I received tickets and a parking pass for the game as part of my season’s package. I brought them just in case and ended up needing both the parking pass and the tickets.
redisgoodParticipantDalvin Cook is the type of runner who has gone wild on us the past few years. How he is handled will be the key to us having any kind of shot or getting completely blown out.
redisgoodParticipantI only stayed for the 1st half, but this is what I saw:
– the best lineup was easily Cat, Henderson, Abu, and the Martin’s
– the offense struggled mightily when Cat went out
– Cat’s shooting motion is so much improved. He can be a big time scorer
– Abu was fabulous at both ends
– Henderson is going to be a big time player for us. I think he was pressing a bit, similar to Lacy in last year’s exhibition. But he is so athletic, and can do everything.
– Rowan’s shot looked good. Like Henderson, I think he was pressing a bit. His defense needs a lot of work
– I doubt Gott has ever had a team defined by their defense, but this team may be it. Especially the starting five. Those guys get after it
-Beejay didn’t play much while I was there. He had a nice block, but not much else.
– I’m not sure how we will do this year, but these guys are going to be a lot of fun to watch
redisgoodParticipantThis will also be the year they can do a pre-season exhibition tour, like the year they went to Spain. Or the year Sid took them to Canada. Okay, never mind that one.
Hopefully we will have DSJ, Bam, and Rawle Alkins all boarding the flight to wherever.
redisgoodParticipantI should call my team The Under Performers. Russell Wilson, Eddy Lacy, Jordan “Oops I Almost Had That One” Matthews, Davante Adams, Martellus Bennet. Thank god for ODB. They looked so good on paper draft night.
redisgoodParticipantAll my fantasy teams are toast, so I am doubly glad to be going to the PNC and missing a Sunday afternoon of football carnage.

A few games that I thought would be easily winnable will be somewhat more difficult now.

redisgoodParticipantThere were some outstanding blocks on that play as well.
It’s amazing how much faster he was than anyone else on the field. Two or three more years of this guy is going to be so much fun to watch.
redisgoodParticipantBam and DSJ looked like they were having a good time.

redisgoodParticipantDUI is obviously a serious matter, but then there’s this:
A Zamboni driver was arrested Friday on suspicion of operating the machine while drunk during a high school hockey game in Fargo, North Dakota.
Steven Anderson, 27, was arrested after exhibiting “erratic behavior” between the first and second periods of the hockey game. A school official called police to the arena, where Anderson was arrested
