Ricky Fowler just picked State. My new favorite golfer. Kirk Herbstreit picked Carolina, and he’s never right. Go Pack!

I agree. Keep it respectable until Henderson gets back. We will then have another talented all around player to put in the lineup, and a much improved Rowan to boot. As long as the refs continue to enforce the no contact rule, Cat should continue to put up big numbers. Freeman will be healthy by January too. The missing pieces right now are consistency from Abu and Beejay. I think getting DSJ in there later in the season is probably not going to happen, but what a bonus that would be!

#44 had 30 points after 25 minutes. When he scored his 30th Gott called a timeout and told Cody to forget about playing help defense, just stick with him. He scored 8 more in the final 15 minutes. One of them was when he got the ball in the deep corner with one second on the shot clock. He just threw it up at the basket while falling out of bounds. Nothing but net of course. I was reading about him later. He didn’t play HS ball because of Crohn’s disease. Gott said Corch watched one of Winthrop’s games a few days ago and called him to warn about 44, and said the kid is a player. Even though it against us, he was fun to watch

Man, that was a pesky team. #44 looked like a white Steph Curry. Quick release, deadly accurate. Every time we would start to build a lead the guy would make a couple of three pointers and get them back in it. Abu was terrible tonight. Fortunately we have Cat. He was unbelievable. He’s realizing more each game the new rules are made for him. Everytime he drives the lane he has a 90% chance of getting fouled. Rowan gets better each game as well. That guy is like a silent assassin.

I have no idea what to expect in the Michigan game, but I do think Abu will bounce back, and as long as we have Cat at the point we should be in pretty much any game.

I know others have said it, but the minutes Rowan is getting right now will be huge down the road. He had me going nuts during the game for all his misses (1 for 10), but then cheering like crazy when he scored 7 in OT. He’s definitely not the pure shooter Scott Wood is, but he has so much more to his game than Wood ever did. He’s not afraid to drive the lane, or to mix it up under the basket. And he definitely has a shooter’s memory – only remembers the makes. He will be a great weapon to have off the bench once Henderson comes back.

I’m not sure what to expect for the Michigan game, but at least last night’s game offered some encouraging signs.

That’s a very long long shot. He tore his ACL mid-August, and the absolute stretch recovery time is six months, which would be mid-February. I would say a more realistic recovery is nine months with another three to get back in game shape. So in my opinion, he won’t hit the court in earnest until August.

Cat Barber- 42 points, 15 assists, 13 rebounds, and 3 turnovers. I think he also worked the concession stand at halftime. The Rest of the team really stepped up, but Cat was simply phenomenal.

So many negatives from last night. Rebounding, FT shooting (other than Cat), no offense from our bigs, defensive breakdowns, etc. etc. It’s amazing we only lost by three. If we get half of the 50/50 balls, if half of those missed 5 footers from Beejay, Lennard, and Abu go in, take away the stupid retaliation fouled by Martin, box out better on the defensive end, and someone other than Cat makes free throws, we win the 20-30. I think some of these guys may have partied a little too hard in NY this past weekend and weren’t mentally or physically ready to play. Cat played his heart out though. He looked absolutely exhausted at the end of the game. I’m not sure what he will have left in the tank tonight. I can’t get the thought out of my head that Kyle Washington wouldn’t have let us lose last night. He has a toughness our other bigs don’t. I also think if Terry Henderson was getting the 25 minutes that ended up going to Mav, we would be seeing a different team.

I do agree this does not look like it’s going to be much of a season. We’re just too thin, the bigs cannot generate enough offense, and they do not have enough mental toughness. I’m not sure why Gott isn’t throwing Kirk in there to shake things up a bit. He’s very athletic, and if nothing else has 5 fouls to give.

It could be an ugly game tonight. They will be going at next year’s #1 overall NBA pick, and that is a scary proposition, given how we don’t play defense. Ben Simmons will be like Savon Goodman on steroids times 10.

Not that I’m superstitious or anything, but this thread title worked out pretty well last year. Can I request a Part II for Saturday’s game?

And their going to be asking stadium and parking attendants to be doing things they’re not trained for. I’m expecting chaos, but I hope I’m wrong.

Anyone going to the game this Saturday is going to have to use lots of patience and allow for plenty of extra time to park and get in the stadium. As most know, it was announced there will be beefed up security in and around the stadium. I’m expecting huge lines at the entry gates, and I would not be surprised to see long lines to park as well.

^ In their next game they struggled mightily against Liberty, losing 38-35 at halftime before finally pulling away late in the game.

As a cautionary note, part of the perceived improved play may be due to playing progressively worse competition. In CBS’ preseason rankings, W&M was 118, South Alabama 213, and IUPUI 254. We should know more after the games in New Jersey. Arizona State is 88, and if we get past them, LSU is 38. LSU is also currently ranked #24 in the AP poll, and #19 in the Coaches poll. An obvious challenge is getting Cat some bench time in Game 1.

The poop is smelling a little better each game. Definitely some positives tonight. Defense had some lapses but played much better overall. Mav’s defense is improving by leaps and bounds, and he is getting more and more comfortable in the offense each game. Beejay looked much better, and Cat was solid. Free throws by the entire team were horrific though. That needs to be cleaned up. Overall I am encouraged. I’m seeing progress game by game, and that’s really what matters at this point in the season.

So in less than a few short weeks we lose Matt Dayes for the season, lose to William & Mary, lose Terry Henderson for two months, and lose Bam to Kentucky. I know it can be challenging to be an NC State fan at the best of times, but damn, this is demoralizing.

He’s announcing tomorrow morning on Mike & Mike. That has Cal written all over it. I do not think he would be going on Mike & Mike to announce for NC State.

Henderson is 21 now, will be 22 next year as a senior. That’s pretty much the outer limits for someone with professional aspirations. He would quit and go play in Europe before staying beyond that.

But more importantly, we need this guy desperately for the ACC season. The ACC opener will be 7 weeks from the time of his injury, right between the 6-8 week estimates.

Good god! Don’t redshirt Henderson. That will be like throwing in the towel on the season. Looking at the schedule, he should be back for the first ACC game against VT. He can defend, rebound, handle the ball, and is a good shooter. I know he didn’t show his shooting touch in the exhibition or the 6 minutes he played against W&M, but he had a solid two years at WVU doing all those things. I honestly think he was just pressing to much since he is a Raleigh kid, and wanted to do well for the hometown.

The refs emphasis on calling all touch fouls is a killer as well. While it affects both teams equally, we don’t have the depth to withstand that. Cat especially has to play defense very cautiously. Not making excuses for the poor D, but I think it is a bit of a contributor.

There is one alarming stat after the 1st two games. Cat Barber played 79 of a possible 80 minutes. That is an incredibly disturbing number. Duke and Carolina? Sure. But William & Mary and South Alabama? As a famous baseball announcer liked to say, “Holy Cow”! I’m guessing a big part of that is due to losing Henderson, but I cannot believe we couldn’t squeeze at least 5-8 minutes from someone during the S.Alabama game.

Another concern is this does not look to be a good shooting team. Someone had a good line about Mav. “He has a nice shooting touch. He shoots everything he touches”. But I really can’t blame him. We do need someone to step up and score. Caleb’s 3 point shooting has been a nice surprise, Cat’s poor shooting and reluctance to drive the lane has been disappointing. But if you are never going to take the guy off the floor, I can see how that would happen.

Defense obviously has been not good. It looked a little better last night, but S. Alabama was clearly a much weaker team than W&M.

Gottfried is going to have to do his best coaching job yet to get them to some semblance of respectability. Obviously it’s early, so I am still hopeful they can get it figured out. But at the end of the day, Cat somehow needs to play less minutes.
