Interesting we just picked up Henderson from WVU and will be playing them.

Suggestion to the editorial staff – start a new weekly Friday update called “It’s Friday, Bitches!!!”. That would be the best!

BTW – great article, can’t wait for the next shoe to drop

Hmmm, this makes a ton of sense! Puts the game in prime time Saturday night. Gives an extra day off for those who might play early in the NCAAT.

Now about that new logo ….

Glad to see WPN is in the Seahawk camp!!!! Hopefully a catastrophic Saturday will be followed by the RW show on Sunday, and then our “young’uns” getting their act together and beating UMD Monday night.

I think you hit it on the head. We’ll get behind early and never catch up – there will be glimmers of hope to encourage us, (we cut it to 10!!!) but we’ll be heartbroken at the end.

However, DU is so much better than us that I can’t get too emotionally engaged. It would be a historic upset that I just can’t imagine. Especially if Tyler is still sick. I think we need him to avoid getting too frustrated and for his passing skills if we are going to get it inside.

What’s on at the movies at say, 2:00?

Agree about Tyler, but he was sick. I’m sure he would have gotten a lot more time, Gott was not happy with Cat.

Faststback68 – Amen, brother. Dez started the season as a scorer, but seems to have wilted and now is just a defensive guy – normally assigned to their best guy.

Refs – Inconsistency. Doubt we would have won, but had the UVA game been called the way the Wake game was, there would have been 20 more fouls called on UVA’s physical play. Not blaming either loss on the refs – we cost ourselves both games.

Gott – I thought his in game adjustment in the first half turned the game around. They were killing us, then during that timeout he yelled at them, made a couple of substitutions and we took over the game. We were clearly the better team after the first TV timeout. But then in the second half, how do you go 9 minutes without being able to call a play and get ONE basket???? NINE MINUTES??? I get ‘going cold’, but not for that long. And that last in-bound play, how can we have been so poorly prepared for that? I’m not on the “Gott’s incompetent” bandwagon, there is a ton of coaching talent on our bench. But this was not their best day. And we REALLY needed this game.

    Incredibly disappointing.

Great write-up! However, the chart is getting a little out of control. Or maybe it’s just me.

Just like I said for the ND game, looking for positive signs of coaching. Get these guys’ confidence up, and the energy high. We can’t let UVA beat us twice.

Let’s not waste any energy worrying about going to Cameron yet, we’ve got a game we could win at WF – but it will be tough. They are undefeated at home and have the same record as us. I would expect those who make these decisions to pick Wake by a couple of points because of home court.
They are also very young. If you look at their web site, they list 17 players on the roster (obviously, not all have scholarships) and 14 of them are freshmen (3), sophmores (10), and RS sophmores (1).
Like us, they lost big to UVA, and double digits to Pitt. However, they did lose to Tenn. But they beat Carolina.

Gott has to get them focused and ready after that nightmare Saturday. They score from every position, so we have to revisit the concept of defense.

To have any shot at post season, we need both WF games.

Sorry VA, didn’t mean to sound as snarky as I did. My attempt at humor fell flat. Also didn’t mean to show off my poor spelling (“paraphArase”) skills.
If I ruled the world ….
    1) I’d send all the refs back to training. They’ve reverted back to last year’s rules. Not that it would have changed the outcome, but UVA should have picked up several more fouls due to the physical inside play. Haven’t noticed it as much in other games, but it was pretty obvious Saturday. They were really physical.
    2) I’d start Beejay right now and keep extending his minutes as he rounds into shape. What better incentive than having to show it on the floor? When he gets gassed, bring in Vandy.
    3) I’d require that UNC lose the remainder of their conference games. (okay, had to toss in a fun one. What’s the good of ruling the world otherwise?)

I guess saying (parapharased), “playing once through the conference schedule” will tell us where we stand in the conference is not breakthrough thought … but I totally agree with the teams called out. To have any shot at postseason activity (NIT, not even imagining NCAAT), we need to beat WF twice, Miami twice, GT and Maryland. Add Clemson to get us to 8 wins. That is the only scenario I can stretch my brain around to get us to even in the conference.
And I don’t really think we can do that. I think it more likely we win 5, probably losing at WF, and getting out coached twice to Larranaga.

But it’s tough to figure this team out.

UVA won w/o Harris??? Did not know that. Now I am really scared.
Looks to me like they shut down what we want to do really well.

I think we are going to have a bad day.

6’8″ and 230 as a HS senior, and can jump out of the gym. He’s going to have a heck of a year.
Like all HS players, he needs to add muscle but he’s got a great frame.

As long as transfers don’t cripple us, next year should be a stellar year. Even w/o TJ.

Tyler scored 50 points in a game this summer????? Whoa! That really changes the way I look at him. If he could score 6-8 a game, what a difference that would make. Otherwise, I think his game is very solid.

Other than that period during the second half when we came down and took 3-4 consecutive three pointers, I thought our offense was really good. Defensively, I thought this was one of Gott’s better games. The 3/4 court pressure made a real difference.

Cat will be fine. You have to remember that for the previous four years, he’s probably been able to go to the basket anytime he wanted to. And Gott is telling him to drive at every opportunity. He just needs to improve his judgement on when those opportunities are there. He’ll get there. He also needs to develop that little two man game to help the bigs get shots.

Love the breakdown of minutes, everyone got double digits and everyone scored.

I was proud to be a Wolfpacker tonight.

I will be doing the polar bear by 9:30 tonight, I am sure. Vandy and Cat will already have two fouls and will be gathering splinters, and Gott will have burned 2 timeouts as our only effective defensive strategy.
I should have been a Duke (nope, they lost), Carolina (nope, they lost), Wake Forest fan!!

This will be a good gauge of Gott & Co’s ability to focus the team. He couldn’t do it last year. Let’s see if he can pull it off with this young team.

Love the charts, however I agree w/ DOG … the polar bear looked very squirrel like. I do get the ‘hands over the eyes’ and agree. Definitely a keeper. Great job. Can’t wait to see one with more red.

This one is likely a perfect storm of them evolving in a positive direction and our going the other way. I just don’t see us being able to get up off the floor after the Pitt game and going on the road to a very hostile environment and righting the ship. That just doesn’t sound like us.

Anyone besides me think that Sherman could be the ND mascot? He just looks like that guy. (no offense intended Mr Sherman, just saying …)

Fun debate. Again, the Pack tantalizes us with possibilities.
A most interesting season is unveiling in front of us. We’ve got a lot of talent, including the best player in the league, most of which we’re seeing inconsistent glimpses of. We all feel like if we could pull it all together we could do some real damage.

I think the question becomes, can this coaching staff put it all together that quickly? I really want to believe, but I am skeptical. I’ll be very impressed if they do it … and think it bodes well for the Pack long term.

I subscribe to the ’20 wins heading into the ACCT and you’re solid’ theory as well. But I don’t see that happening this year, so I think our best shot is to pull off a couple of upsets and get to 20 with a couple of ACCT wins. Then I think we have a shot at the NCAAT.
That means we need to win 8 before the tournament.
I think we’ve got a pretty good shot at WF (2), GT, Miami(2), Clemson, VT. Unfortunately, 4 of them are road games. So assume we take 2 of the 4 and win the home games, that’s 5.
So I’m looking for 2 -3 wins from the tier two teams, Pitt, ND, MD, FSU and BC. Four of them are home games. So lose the road games and split the home games, and we only have to steal another one from somewhere.

It’s a stretch, but if we keep getting better, maybe …

An upset over Pitt Saturday would be a great start at trying to build a tourney resume.

As to zone offense, getting the ball to Kyle at the post is a new wrinkle I hope we see a lot more of. He seemed very comfortable with the short jumper. He’s improved his defense. If he can look for the pass as well as that shot, he’ll be scary good. I think he’s going to be great.

I think the officiating adjustment seems to have leveled out.

I checked the number of fouls we’ve gotten so far, and in November we averaged 22 per game with a high of 31 in the Central game. In December we have averaged 17, with the curve busters being Detroit (23) and UT (20), otherwise we are averaging 15. (15, 15, 14, and 16)

I think the teams have adjusted and the refs have settled down, and the “new rules” discussion (which aren’t really new, just newly emphasized) is behind us.

That said, I totally agree with the poster that said you don’t blame the refs. They are a fact of life, just like the weather. There are good ones and bad ones, but none of them want to affect the outcome of a game. I like the Wooden quote … if we take care of business, we won’t be in a position to hope for ‘a lucky call’ to save us.

Sticking in craw? … I think it SHOULD!
Let’s not mistake Mizzou for Duke. This was not a game where we were over our heads and “kept up with the big boys.” We were favored by both Kenpom and Vegas. We were supposed to win this game! We were the better team for 90% of the game. How many games will we be favored in this year? We’ve got to win ALL of those games, and some more, to make the NCAAT.

Low spots – point guard – Vandy and Beejay don’t create shots, that is the PG role. Neither Cat nor TL got the job done scoring or creating. Successful tournament teams have strong guard leadership. We’re going to see a lot of big, strong, talented guards. Gotta figure that out.
High point – Kyle’s jumpers. What a great zone buster. 10 pts / 3 rb / 2 blk – I think he’s worked his way back into the starting line up in Nard’s slot. Heck of an athlete.

Let’s not settle for less than high expectations. I like Gott’s comments after the game. Mizzou made plays at the end and we didn’t. Translated, we choked. And I hate it.

But, as someone said earlier, it is still December and we are improving. But it’s going to be tough to get this one back in the ACC.
