PapaJohnParticipant
Bama: “so many one dimensional players.”
Totally agree. Not sure if that is an indictment of the coaching staff or the players (or both), but it is true. The freshman class appears to have the potential to break the mold and be good on both ends – but they still have a lot to learn.
Hoping more playing time will help them, it definitely has helped Malik improve lately. As a group, they are 7th, 8th, and 9th in minutes played. Only Dez has fewer.
Caleb has played 397 mins, Malik 374, and Cody only 173.
For contrast, BeeJay has played 412 and Nard 385. Cat’s at 620.And of course Trevor is the highest at 750.(not sure if those numbers include today)
PapaJohnParticipantObviously happy to scratch out a win, but I’ve got no confidence that anything is going to get better.
Can’t see us breaking the pattern and winning at WF. (can’t win more than one in a row) So after that game, we are right back to hoping for a miracle finish.PapaJohnParticipantNo idea what to expect.
Been a tough stretch. Would really be nice to see a strong win.PapaJohnParticipantGreat post, thank you.
This kid looks good. Nice to see we are continuing to fill in our gaps and are able to recover quickly when a player is ineligible.PapaJohnParticipantGood luck Coach, hope you follow in Marc Trestman’s footsteps. OC at State, launching pad to an NFL head coaching job!
And of course Pete’s (former Wolfpack DC) coaching Seattle in a little game on Sunday.PapaJohnParticipantNice to see balance in the comments. Unless Archie approaches Debbie with interest in the job … seems unlikely there will be a regime change in the next couple of years. Remember, she and Gott are long time friends. That will keep him warm during some cold losing spells.
I recall conversations on this site last year worried that Cat was a ‘one and done’. I commented that I thought that was unlikely, then somebody compared him favorably with Chris Paul. Now we wonder what is wrong with him. He’s definitely not sparking the offense at all lately. All I ever see him do is to wave at RT for the baseline cut.
We seem to have a lot of one dimensional players.
* Cat is fast and can defend, but really isn’t great on offense.
* Trevor is great offensively, both shooting and passing. Only okay on defense. His strength is his size.
* Ralston is similar, but is really only a catch and shoot guy – and hot and cold at that. He’s a weak defender, often gets caught reaching in when beaten.
* BeeJay has no defense, and limited offense so far. Lots of physical ability, but not much knowledge of how to play shows on the court.
* Nard is just a rebounder. No shot, limited defense.
* Dez is athletic and can defend, but is not a good ball handler or outside shooter.
* Kyle shoots well (56%), athletic rebounder and shot blocker. Not a good defender. But I think Cody, Caleb and Malik are starting to show all around games. They are very athletic, they hustle (!), they work hard on defense, they rebound, they can shoot, and they cause steals. But they are just freshmen and still have a lot of room to grow.
Hopefully it’s not an aberration, but this latest class looks great to me. Now we need a couple more classes just as good. I hope they are the standard of excellence going forward.
PapaJohnParticipantOnly one word fits, CHOKE!
The going got tough and our guys collapsed. Pitiful performance.Somebody Gott their attention at the half, which was encouraging, but we needed a few breaks to go our way that didn’t. And then when we cut it to three, and we got a couple of bad breaks, they weren’t tough enough to gut it out and keep working hard.
Absolutely embarrassing performance. I’ve got season tix, but don’t think I can stand to watch us get schooled by UVA again, and Cuse. Maybe I’ll go to Va Tech. Or maybe enough is enough for this year.
PapaJohnParticipantYou know, the ACC is a bear. We just went through an extremely rough stretch – we were underdogs in five of the last six and lost four. And now we have 6 of the last 10 on the road. And we are probably underdogs in two of the remaining 4 home games, UVA and Cuse.
Gonna be a rough ride …
PapaJohnParticipantSeems like you could just republish this same article every year about this time. We just don’t seem to be able to get away from the bubble.
PapaJohnParticipantHoly crap!
I knew the Miami game was badly skewed (21/10) but that is huge… and at the same time, our bigs have started getting more involved. You’d expect the opposition bigs picking up more fouls.
I do think we need more emphasis on driving the basket. The Martins bring that. I think anytime Cat brings the ball up court and the defense is not set, he should sprint for the layup or dish. I think there are several opportunities for that each game.PapaJohnParticipant^ “Where so I start with all the errors in your post” – LOL
Careful 2005, positive comments are outliers in this neighborhood. But you aren’t alone.
PapaJohnParticipantnot again!!!!!
PapaJohnParticipantTwo soul crushing losses in one week. Brutal. Looking like another 19 win season.
The pattern is set, both at the game level, and on the season. We look good (UNC, Miami, ND), and then disappoint (UNC, Miami, ND). I think we’ll squeeze into the NCAAT and win one (look good and get our hopes up), but then collapse and not make it out of the first weekend. (disappoint)
And don’t forget, we have not had our annual injury yet. Somebody important always misses playing time due to injury.
I thought this year was going to be better.
PapaJohnParticipantHeelh8r
Welcome. Appreciate your resume, but you had us at “heelh8r”PapaJohnParticipantNeed a win this week. Blew Miami, so gots to be this one.
01/24/2015 at 1:08 PM in reply to: Fantastic Dave Doeren interview: Contrast in styles with Larry Fedora #71024PapaJohnParticipantTHANK YOU! That was great!!
DD said everything exactly the way we would want him to. Sounds like he is here for a while, and I believe he will build a program we’ll be proud of.
Yow gets a lot of credit for getting a guy that not only has the skills to coach winning football, but cares about character development, and wants to take the program as a whole to a higher level.
Very, very impressed with our Coach.
PapaJohnParticipantThis guy sounds special. Do we have a good shot at him?
PapaJohnParticipantThis is the kind of “season making”, “pivotal” or “RPI critical” (pick your description) game that we normally blow. Winning games like this one, and the ND game, would make us much more comfortable on Selection Sunday.
Unfortunately, that does not seem to be our destiny as Wolfpack fans.
PapaJohnParticipantCan we go 6-6 the rest of the way?
Seems like we should be able to beat Clemson(H), Clemson, GT, WF, Va Tech(H) and BC. But 4 are road games and you know us on the road. Just doing that would put us at 19 wins going into the ACCT.
That leaves Miami, ND(H), UVA(H), Louisville, UNC and Syr(H).
My bet is we lose 2 from Group A (teams we should beat) and win two from Group B and still need a couple in the ACCT to feel comfy, because we are the Pack and never do things easy.
However, I’d vote along with the poster that suggested we just win the rest.
01/19/2015 at 2:27 PM in reply to: Gottfried discusses V Foundation, Coach K history on Sportscenter #70416PapaJohnParticipantGott represents us well on TV. I wonder if it is just his personality and he has always been comfortable on camera, or if spending a couple of years being a TV guy did it for him? At the least, it probably helped him get better at it.
I did not recall that he’d been recruited by Coach K, but K decided to go with Johnny Dawkins instead. Crazy.
We need to figure out how to win two in a row. We’ve alternated winning and losing the last 10 games. These next two are RPI builders, and then the following 3 are RPI bruisers. Need to get on a roll!!
PapaJohnParticipantMust win for sure.
Tier 1 (top 5) seems to be mostly over our heads, so we have to win as many of the rest as we can.PapaJohnParticipantnav – “Paige Arena” – hilarious!! (and pretty well photoshopped)
PapaJohnParticipantThey did it to us again. Roy must be celebrating big time today.
Hate it
01/14/2015 at 12:27 PM in reply to: Technician Let’s Us Down: “No Daily Tar Hell”. Students Respond #69451PapaJohnParticipantSounds to me like the EIC was intimidated by the challenge to keep it going.
PapaJohnParticipant“Paige’s game winning lay-up with milliseconds left on the clock at PNC last year still haunts me.”
Me too – was there – went from screaming to stone cold dead inside in one second.
Hard to imagine us playing as well as we did Sunday twice in a row.
Cautious optimism.
