RODNEY MONROE????
Seriously???
I just noticed this guy compared to Rodney Monroe.
Man, don’t say Rodney unless you mean it. That guy was unbelievable. He had an amazing touch. I recorded every game he played at State and watched them several times before finally getting rid of the tapes.I will never forget the ACC tournament game against WF in 1989 when, with seconds left in regulation, our guy deliberately missed a free throw and Rodney grabbed the rebound and flipped it in while falling on his back. That saved our butt, and we went on to win. I think that was the only 4 overtime ACC game ever. Both teams scored over 100 points. Incredible game.
If this guy really is another Rodney Monroe caliber scoring machine, we are in for a treat. Rodney’s only real weakness was his size, and this guy doesn’t have that problem.

That sounds great to me. Solid tournament team, plus a good shot at winning the ACC weekend due to one less game to play.Excellent goal!

And I agree with him.
(about being great, winning the league is too much of a stretch for me)Not easy for a long time Pack fan to jump on that bandwagon, no matter how much we’d like to.

Well, even if he is, glad to have him in the red and white this year.
We need players, and if he can live up to his press clippings – fantastic.PapaJohnParticipantWell played!!
Wonder how long it will take before that plate is banned?
07/10/2015 at 5:36 PM in reply to: Restoring an icon – Reynolds Renovation – Where do you stand? #87564PapaJohnParticipantLoved that old building, attended many games there when I was a student.
Very happy to see it revitalized to become something much more useful. I really hated going to the Heritage games, it was so sad looking.07/09/2015 at 5:55 PM in reply to: MBB: Pack In The Final Lists of Two High Profile 2015 Recruits #87542PapaJohnParticipant“Rowan just added Louisville and WVU to go along with St. John’s and State”
That doesn’t sound good for us.
PapaJohnParticipantFirst you build an attitude of success. That is what is happening across the NCS sports spectrum. Good is no longer enough.
I think this is the right way to get what we all want, quality is all areas. We’ve had spikes of success in the past, but we haven’t sustained quality in any sport in a very long time. It feels like we have coaches in both key sports that want to stick around. We have an AD that is demanding success and is spending to support it.
I don’t know if this will translate to championship banners immediately, but it really seems like a strong, positive direction.
Well done Ms Yow.

06/08/2015 at 1:19 PM in reply to: Dorn to State; Gottfried continues winning the transfer game #87246PapaJohnParticipantThis is excellent news, long after I thought we were in the lull.
I like everything about this guy, and especially the fact that he is a proven talent. AND, we get him for three years – maybe. Not sure if we have a chance at the big guy, but if we do, I’m back on board with high expectations for next season.
PapaJohnParticipantAbout time!
PapaJohnParticipantThe picture says it as well as the words, there are thousands of men and women risking, and sometimes giving, their lives in support of our country daily so that we can sit around and talk Wolfpack sports.
Today we honor those that died, but should also think of those that live on with life altering injuries – both physical and mental – and their families who support them. I’m sure you don’t feel much like a hero when confined to a wheelchair or wearing a prosthetic.
I served and somehow ended up unscathed. I was just randomly assigned to duty stations that did not include combat areas. Just luck. I sometimes wonder if I would have had “the right stuff.” I think we all wonder, if put in harm’s way, would we have acquitted ourselves like Mr. Sabo.I read stories like this with a lump in my throat and with awe for the courage these young men showed under unimaginable circumstances.
Thank you to the families whose sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and wives and husbands paid the price for our great country.
PapaJohnParticipantNice to turn the corner after a rough stretch since the end of the season.
The kid is Slim Dunkin on Twitter, how cool is that?
He can ball, and he’s got a sense of humor.04/28/2015 at 12:59 PM in reply to: The last 24 hours haven’t been stellar for Mark Gottfried #85804PapaJohnParticipantHats off to Gott for finding this kid. Clearly our guys know what they are doing. Just tough to compete with an offer from UK. And we knew Ingram was likely going blue.
PapaJohnParticipantLove to read this stuff. Am constantly amazed by those on the site pronouncing the annual “Gott has maxed out” epitaph on his career. And this year I think someone added on this site, “but I don’t know if we could do any better.” So Gott’s inadequate, but we can’t do better. So what are we supposed to do about that, shoot ourselves?
A few years ago the line was, “Sure Gott made it to the S16, but he did it with Sid’s players. Can he do it with his own players?” That would be a ‘yup.’
Then it was, “He can recruit, but can develop them?” Well Trevor was a lot better player this year than he was in his two previous playing years at UA. I think we’d agree Cat’s getting better, BJ certainly had a better year, Abu improved a ton from beginning to the end of the year, he got ‘Calvin’ to be a team player … so I’d say, “yup.’
And of course, “He can’t coach defense.” Well, you have to admit that our defense was better by the end of this season than we have seen so far. I’d give him a half ‘yup’ on that, because I’d like to send the trend continue.
And another one, “He’s not a bench coach.” Well, I saw him call three timeouts back to back and change the course of a game. (which I thought was a mistake at the time) We’ve seen him throw a zone or a trap and change the course of a game. They aren’t always winning strategies, but he’s trying stuff. But I do think he is not going to ever be accused of over coaching, just not his style. Remember Sid whistling and trying to call every possession? How we hated that??? So maybe not the greatest bench coach, but he’s not sitting there reading a book either. And he has beaten some pretty good coaches. Sadly, we lost the guy I think was the greatest bench coach ever – Jimmy V.
Bottom line – Let’s not throw dirt on his face yet, he may yet win over the most ardent groaners. I think he is improving. But, we shall see.
“But we got a shortage of guards for next year” – Well, we went from having one of the best guard tandems in the country that no one was whining about, to in dire straits when one guy left. It sucks that TL left, no doubt about it. But do you think that Gott (guard), Moxley (guard), or Whitt (guard) might have noticed and are trying to fix it? Whether they will or not, who knows? But I’m giving those former guards with 50+ years of coaching experience enough credit to think they realize that the most important position in college ball is the guard.

I wish it was the whole conf like the Big 10 one. But I get trying to get the entire conference (or at least 10) aligned schedule wise has got to be nearly impossible.
04/09/2015 at 1:07 PM in reply to: State Firmly Ranked in “Ridiculously Early” 2015/16 Top 25 Hoops Polls #84866PapaJohnParticipant“I think Doeren’s formula is pretty simple. He just outworks everybody. Whether it’s recruiting, scouting, attention to detail, social responsibility, public relations, or any other aspect of a college coaches job. The guy is relentless.”
Exactly right.
DD calls us a blue collar, hands in the dirt, hard working team. That’s exactly what we want.I like both DD and Gott, but I think DD is an even better fit. (nothing negative intended at all about Gott) DD said it himself, he and NC State are a perfect match, that’s why he took the job.
04/09/2015 at 9:32 AM in reply to: State Firmly Ranked in “Ridiculously Early” 2015/16 Top 25 Hoops Polls #84849PapaJohnParticipantI have been reading this blog for a long time, since sometime in the Sendek administration. I do not recall such a general positive attitude. And not just in basketball.
And I lay it all at the feet of Ms Yow. I never imagined that she would have such an impact. She’s done exactly what she promised, to accept nothing but excellence and to establish a new trajectory for Wolfpack athletics.
Her job will never be ‘finished’, but we’re seeing good stuff happening. I don’t keep up with all of the various sports within her purview, but the revenue sports and the others I hear about all seem to be trending in the right direction.
Good days for Wolfpack athletics. Let’s enjoy it!
04/08/2015 at 4:27 PM in reply to: State Firmly Ranked in “Ridiculously Early” 2015/16 Top 25 Hoops Polls #84799PapaJohnParticipantHilarious! Nice choice with the Debbie Downer vid. Please let us enjoy this a little longer.
It’s seems a contradiction that we’re thought of as Top 20 material for next year, and simultaneously only #24 in the final USA Today coach’s poll. After making it to the S16. Strange logic.
Glad to see that none of the outlets are dropping any titillating rumors about departures, and you know they would, were there anything to talk about. Hopefully, this group is tight and will bond together even more this year with their off season preparations.
The goal is that the media get used to the idea of our being ranked and we stay there. It’s about time.
PapaJohnParticipant“Who put sand in his vajayjay?”
Spit out my lunch!!! Funny!
I think Gino overstated his point to get the conversation started. And it worked.
I see no reason not to tweak the game to attempt to improve it. Try things, drop them if they fail, keep them if not. But, as noted, the Refs are always going to be a problem until the guys signing their checks want it fixed.
I think it makes sense to align many of the rules with the NBA. Why not make the 3PT line the same? (add 3 feet) It’s not like the college guys can’t hit it, they will adjust. There may be a temporary dip in shooting percentage, but it won’t last.
Shorten the shot clock. Going all the way to 24 with one leap might be too much, but dropping it down to 30 would be an improvement. Most possessions, more opportunities to score.
Widen the lane to 16 feet (+4 feet) and the restricted area (+1 foot). I think that can only help the game, it will make driving the basket more common.
And here’s a nutty idea, add a 4 point shot. Anything beyond half court is worth 4 points. Wouldn’t it be fun to see that integrated to that end of game strategy? Bombs away! I think I remember Cat hitting one his freshman year. And just before the half, what about letting one fly for that 4 point burst going into the half? I think it would be fun – but realistically, nobody’s is even considering this idea.
The NFL tweaks itself, and they are a runaway train success story. I think we regularly fine tune to get the game we love better.
PapaJohnParticipant^ Agree
Having a year with no incoming players just doesn’t feel right. I get the “fully loaded” rationale, but I think we’ve seen a trend toward longer benches this year in some programs.
Duke is still pretty short, but Orange County has 10 guys playing almost every game, Michigan state plays nine, Wisconsin plays 8 guys every game with another getting regular minutes, and of course Kentucky plays 10.I doubt we’ll get either of those two high profile guys, and I think the staff knows that. So I hope there is other activity going on of which we are unaware, and not just focus on next year.
PapaJohnParticipantSomeone please notify KW of the new, recently enacted, hard to find documented, NCAA rule allowing only one transfer out of a program per offseason.
Sorry, Patrick already got it.PapaJohnParticipantHey, that’s a second spot opening up on the Scout team. Pick me, coach!
Good luck Patrick!
PapaJohnParticipantAgree about Kyle, and I believe he can improve his defense, and add variety to his offense. I think he is a real talent.
However, I think the coaching staff should put their heads together and figure out a way to optimize Kyle’s talents. It seemed like he was shooting his short jumper in the context of the high post, and the opportunity for the 3PT shot was random.
He’s a different kind of big, a guy who can give you a matchup advantage. A guy who is 6’9″ and can shoot over about anybody both inside and outside. I would think that properly used, he could be a heck of a weapon.
Don’t leave Kyle!!!
PapaJohnParticipantPACK!
