I wonder what the new banner will say
Hopefully, “National Vacated Titles Champions, 1789 – Present”
pakfanistanParticipantI wonder if they chose this week because friday is a holiday…
06/30/2014 at 3:07 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53120pakfanistanParticipantThe conflating of NCAA rules with a trademark decision, the treatment of the government as a monolithic entity, and the assertion that this president has done anything unprecedented is disturbing.
pakfanistanParticipantWell, aren’t they claiming they need money? Wouldn’t a professional just get a better job?
My understanding is the NBA CBA precludes this. In this country, kids aren’t even eligible for the draft until one year removed from college.
The NCAA and other companies are making a ton of money off of these athletes, way more than the value of a college education. The NCAA brings in nearly a billion dollars a year. For a ‘non-profit’ that’s ridiculous. I can’t see any reason not to spread some of that money out to the people who are at the core of the business. Otherwise, you just wind up with stuff like what’s happening at UNC. Because whether we like to admit it or not, what they’ve done isn’t unusual. The offensive part is their high and mighty attitude that they’re somehow cleaner and better than other programs when really, they’re the same.
pakfanistanParticipantNo, I prefer High School and college sports.
Heck, there’s a huge difference between high school and college athletes.
There are 351 D1 basketball programs with 13(?) scholarship players each.
That’s about 4600 scholarship athletes.
There are about 18,000 high school basketball teams. If you assume 13 players per team, that’s about 230,000 basketball players, I’ve seen estimates as high as 500,000.
So, worst case, a college athlete (in basketball) is in the top 2% of high school basketball players. That’s the creme dela creme. Those guys (and girls) aren’t amateurs.
pakfanistanParticipantI do. Believe you are on the wrong side of this issue as well. 0/2!
I assume you seek out church rec leagues to attend, and often request to have them broadcast on TV?
There’s a vast difference between what the average person would consider an amateur, and a D1 athlete.
06/30/2014 at 1:29 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53109pakfanistanParticipantOkay, within the context of a “polite society” or in the vicinity of women and/or children, sure. I can agree with that.
What’s the criteria for a word that shouldn’t be said?
What differentiates a word that is OK from a word that isn’t?
pakfanistanParticipantIt’s really only our twisted notion of amateurism that stops players from being paid.
Nobody wants to see amateurs play sports.
pakfanistanParticipantI hope we give Doeren a little more time before revolting.
We looked supremely outclassed O’Brien’s last two years. I think people underestimate the value of having Wilson and Glennon.
Then you take that thin, physically less talented core, and take away the driver of the offense, and you’re left with a 3-8 record with no conference wins.
I would say at least let the freshmen and sophomore classes matriculate up. Our roster this year will be more than half RS freshmen, or freshmen, I think. That’s a huge difference in experience and time in an S&C program compared to more well established programs.
TAT, if I’m not mistaken, you’ve spoken up about global warming in the past, as a skeptic. I’m truly curious, what piece of evidence would be required to change your mind?
06/30/2014 at 12:30 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53103pakfanistanParticipantI disagree with that, but I regretfully acknowledge some feel that way. Most I would like to think feel we should move towards equality and not “Balkanization” in this country across cultural lines. For national unity’s sake.
Without getting into free speech, because really, this isn’t a free speech issue, do you agree that words exist that shouldn’t be said?
pakfanistanParticipantMaybe they’re counting down to 0.
06/30/2014 at 10:59 AM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53097pakfanistanParticipantThe Navajo use it for their High Schools apparently.
I understand that. The NFL football team isn’t associated with Native Americans in any way, other than the name and some half ass organization Dan Snyder created.
Does anyone disagree that in this country, at this time, there are words it’s more acceptable for one group to use than another?
pakfanistanParticipantI wonder what it would take to convince skeptics anthropogenic global warming is real…..
06/28/2014 at 9:59 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53081pakfanistanParticipantThe NCAA did. And as of now, the University of North Dakota has no official mascot because of it.
Marquette did, when they changed from the Warriors to the Golden Eagles in the 90s.
This isn’t a new controversy, just the highest profile.
Good information, thanks for clarifying which Warriors and which Fighting Sioux we’re talking about.
Marquette and UND occupy very little of my mental space, so I never would have found that without clarification.
06/28/2014 at 9:50 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53080pakfanistanParticipant“Ironic”
Exactly the response I expected, to the word. You’re smug narrow view blinds you from the bigger picture.
Ironic.
06/28/2014 at 5:06 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53074pakfanistanParticipantIt’s so easy to get their panties in a bunch, those who eschew logic, history, facts, results, and reason for feelings and intent.
Ironic.
06/28/2014 at 5:04 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53073pakfanistanParticipantAlready have.
06/28/2014 at 4:56 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53070pakfanistanParticipantShow me where I wrote that.
PS: Dietz’s Native American heritage is now under question, but yes, the intent of the name was to honor him and his claimed heritage.
In conjunction with
And it continues.
Acts of honor and respect turned into slurs by the PC left.We were taking about the Redskins, you posted the above, which indicates you think ‘redskin’ represents honor and respect.
06/28/2014 at 4:51 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53069pakfanistanParticipantI wonder if someone can name a wholesome American thing that has been taken away because of the loony bin PC leftist secular marxist regime.
The American Flag. Schools, houses, Fire Stations, uniforms, municipal locations, etc all across the country.
And you still haven’t changed your ethnically offensive username so you have zero credibility in this discussion.
The commies took the American flag away??? Those bastards!
Can you name some of these schools, houses, fire stations, uniforms, and municipal locations ‘all across the country’ that were taken away because they were offensive?
When the trademark on my username gets revoked, I’ll let you know.
06/28/2014 at 4:36 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53067pakfanistanParticipantHas anyone complained about any of those things?
Inform yourself a lil more then come back.
You made the claim, it’s your responsibility to provide the supporting evidence.
While we’re at it, has the trademark been revoked on any of these things? Because that’s all that happened here.
06/28/2014 at 4:35 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53066pakfanistanParticipantAgain, what are you talking about?
Who said Fighting Sioux is offensive?
I can’t find anything on the Fighting Christians, other than they changed their name. There was one reference to changing demographics at the school.
Ol’Miss, debatable, and depends on your opinion of the reason for the civil war.
Who has ever claimed ‘Warriors’ is offensive? Why does the word warrior refer to Native Americans? Is the Wounded Warrior project a Native American organization?
Has anybody ever complained that people using their own given names is offensive? Ever? In the history of the world?
What are you talking about?
06/28/2014 at 3:07 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53060pakfanistanParticipantI wonder if someone can name a wholesome American thing that has been taken away because of the loony bin PC leftist secular marxist regime.
06/28/2014 at 2:53 PM in reply to: U.S. Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark registration #53059pakfanistanParticipantWhat are you even talking about?
Has anyone complained about any of those things?
It’s hilarious that you think “Redskins” is a term of honor and respect, when we’ve already established no one would use it to refer to a Native American person.
And yes, the name “Redskins” does refer to Native American people.
pakfanistanParticipantJohn Oliver has been killing it. The followup to this bit was awesome as well.
Cable companies are trying to double dip (maybe triple dip). Net neutrality is important but ultimately, the biggest challenge is a lack of competition.
pakfanistanParticipantTrees are people too.
I know that’s a joke, but there is some really interesting research that shows that plants can communicate. I really hope it in time shows a level of intelligence, because I want to watch vegans slowly starve.
