As far as Carlos goes there are three possibilities early on. A) He kills it during spring training and makes the Opening Day active roster; B) He performs well, but not spectacularly, and stays in Charlotte until the last week of April/first week of May; or C) He underperforms and stays in Charlotte for the first two months or so. Carlos is a Boras signee, so the Sox will be looking to maximize service time with the club. This would be most likely be route B. However, Rick Hahn has stated that Carlos will be evaluated on his talent and grasp of the major league game, not necessarily just service time. Not only that, but he IS a starter, so the team doesn’t want him in the bullpen too long, especially with the crowding there now after three offseason bullpen additions.
As a Sox fan, I want him up as soon as possible. I want a rotation of Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks and Rodon ASAP.
packpowerfanParticipantWuf, I greatly appreciate the updates. I feel like I’m responsible for them, given that I’m a State alum and a White Sox fan (I almost had a stroke when Carlos dropped to 3rd), but I’m so caught up in the poop show that is the 2014 Sox I sort of forget to post.
Carlos should be in the bullpen before the season’s end. Barring a shelling in AAA, that is. I’m hoping to see him next Sunday in start #2.
packpowerfanParticipantAlso this snap frustration.
packpowerfanParticipantUNHHHHH…PEPPERMINT ROLL!
packpowerfanParticipantAnd yes…I feel like this:
packpowerfanParticipantpackalum,
FSU, one of Clemson/Miami/Louisville, and of course *NX. They are perennial title darkhorses, remember?!
packpowerfanParticipantBrett started out slow, but is showing some strides. Carlos will most likely start in Winston with the high-A Dash, but could jump straight to AA in Birmingham if his warm up weeks in Arizona go well.
This Sox fan is extremely happy. Management thinks he could be in the majors by September, and he is already going to be considered for next year’s Opening Day roster out of the bullpen.
packpowerfanParticipantIf I’m an opposing ACC coach the sheer thought of a 280lb BeeJay Anya barreling up and down the court is effing terrifying.
packpowerfanParticipantOh, I also enjoy Chuck Kaiton during hockey season. He has one of the more unique voices out there, and he is a Hurricanes staple.
Not to mention, the guy can call the hell out of a game. Doesn’t need any help in the booth, and really gives you the full picture. Plus, you gotta love his name pronunciations.
packpowerfanParticipant92, if we tread water this coming season, I could see him getting another year. Remember, losing Rodon won’t “hurt” if you look at this last season. Sure, he could hold a team to 2-3 runs…but we lose those anyway regardless of who is pitching. I’m obviously not saying losing the best pitcher in baseball won’t be a massive negative; but this past season was lost with or without him.
packpowerfanParticipantCan we at least agree that Joe Buck needs to be burned at the stake?
packpowerfanParticipantWell this is an interesting turn of events. Holliday has been the strongest link of this staff for a while now. Avent is going to be in hot water in a season or two.
packpowerfanParticipantI like Forslund in hockey. A few years ago there were some national games with Forslund and Doc Emerick, and it was amazing. Vin Scully is fantastic in baseball. I’m a ChiSox fan, so I’m partial to Hawk’s awful homerisms; but I recognize how grating he is to opposing fans…or even some of our own.
On a purely national level I’d take Emerick or Gary Thorne on p-b-p, and someone like Steve Kerr doing color. I really enjoy Steve’s insights during NBA games.
packpowerfanParticipantDSD, it depends on a lot of factors. Most likely, Carlos will start at AA Birmingham. I just don’t think they’ll even think of putting him at A-ball in Winston-Salem. He will throw there for a short time, then move to AAA Charlotte. Depending on how much time Don Cooper gets with him, how well he transitions to major league workloads, and the pitching situation in the majors; Carlos could come up in a bullpen role by August.
Another thing to take into account is his agent. Rodon is a Boras signee, which means he commands a higher price than most rookies. In order to (hopefully) drive down his initial price, the Sox will most likely come up with an accelerated timetable.
Given the patchwork rotation (Sale, Quintana, Danks, Rienzo, Noesi), I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him play out of the bullpen early, and possibly start as soon as September. He will most likely be rotation ready for the long haul by next May, possibly even April. If Carlos pitches like we know he can, he will immediately jump in as the number four starter, and possibly the three given Danks’ inconsistencies.
I’m going to boldly say that he is the number 3 starter by late summer of 2015, and that he is behind only Chris Sale to start the 2016 season. Having those two, with those sliders, during back-to-back starts is mind-boggling.

I hated that place. The only building on campus that actively conspired against your day drinking if you had any leftover business. Walking up those stairs, then onto an unfamiliar floor, with a strong buzz was a recipe for disaster.

I’m having Vietnam-level flashbacks. F**k off with that Beej.
04/16/2014 at 4:42 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51215packpowerfanParticipantRick, I can dig your layout. I think it’s just a case where you’re usually way more cautious than I am when it comes to prognosticating.
I have a stronger gut feeling that we’ll fall into a higher tier than your percentages suggest. Of course, it is just that: a gut feeling. After seeing how much better TJW and Vandy looked physically this year versus last, I have a lot of faith that Anya will be in better shape. IIRC, he was in even worse shape when he first came into the program. It is only one thing on a long list of things for us to have a positive season, but I think his transformation will pay big time dividends.
04/16/2014 at 3:05 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51205packpowerfanParticipantOof! Good catch, Tau. I would drop Notre Dame behind Wake and GT, TBH. I don’t necessarily believe that FSU or Clemson will end up in 4th, but I see that as their upper limit. Those teams are much better defensively than a good half of the conference. They’ll probably get shelled by the top three teams, but I could see them holding serve well enough against teams not named Duke, *NX or Louisville to finish there..with some help, of course.
If they do sneak up there, watch out, because they’ll flame out SPECTACULARLY in the postseason.

There’s a reason you write sometimes-profane and always gloriously-frustrating RIVEBROGS and I do not.
04/16/2014 at 1:52 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51199packpowerfanParticipantRick, I think the tradeoff from Lewis to Cat is a wash. You get a better scoring threat with looser handles. The big question is can the team pick up 40pts across the board. That is TJW+Vandy on average, just throwing a number off the top of my head. I think BSW moving to the 3 will be a massive help. His stroke was noticeably better when he was out of the 2-slot.
I think the more difficult thing to replace will be the intangibles. Remember, we still limped into the tournament this year with a young team replacing 4 starters and a “big” (in terms of STAHHHHHS) transfer out.
The ACC will be an absolute meat grinder at the top next year, but I don’t see Virginia repeating without Akil Mitchell and Joe Harris; and I don’t buy that another team will make a quantumn leap. Clemson will continue to improve, but I don’t think they’ll be world beaters. GT and Wake will become serviceable. Miami, BC, and Virginia Tech will round out the bottom. I think Syracuse is wildly overrated as well. If Parker stays at Duke, they will probably win the ACC outright. Without him, I would say it is going to be a three way scrum between Duke, ‘Ville, and the Holes. Pitt, Syracuse, or FSU will be 4,5,6 in some order…but I do think State will have the all-around talent and depth to compete for those slots. Will we win the ACC? I highly doubt it…but in Gott’s 4th year I don’t see a lot of reasons to be pessimistic (not you, but the kommentariat on the whole).
For those who cry TL:DR, I think a fair order of finish, with fluidly interchangeable tiers in italics, bolded, and unaltered:
Duke
Louisville
*NX
Pitt
Syracuse
FSU
State
Virginia
Clemson
GT
Wake
BC
Miami

(although Noah’s former negativity was pretty hilarious)
04/16/2014 at 10:56 AM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51186packpowerfanParticipantI have to agree with Beej on this one. I don’t see how this team is weaker than this previous season’s, with the exception of a single premier scoring threat. If Anya spends the offseason conditioning, and Cat grows some claws to hold onto the ball more efficiently, I think this team takes a big leap. We lose, without question, our best ballhandler in Lewis; and we lose our single best scorer in TJW. I feel that Anya can fill Vandy’s quite literal gap (with Abu spelling him), and can improve our interior defense by a country mile. The scoring looks to be more spread out, with Cat being a better scorer than Lewis was, Lacey ruminating over the system for a season, and Turner moving to a more 3-pt friendly 3-position. The forward spots will be extremely solid next season.
Maybe it is just my recent move back to NC, or the surprising offensive success my White Sox are throwing down, that has me smelling roses and good ‘cue; but I think this team surprises a lot of people next year…hopefully in a positive way.
packpowerfanParticipantF***ing hate that guy. End quote, roll credits, middle finger.
04/08/2014 at 2:05 PM in reply to: TJ Warren declares for NBA draft; future of NC State basketball #50926packpowerfanParticipantI think it is pretty easy to say that everyone wishes TJ well, and that whichever team takes him will get a premier scorer on the cheap. I don’t see him going higher than mid-1st; but stranger things have happened.
packpowerfanParticipant“And most of what you see, my dear is purely for show; because not everything that goes around, comes back around you know.”
I offer this line from “…Like Clockwork” by Queens of the Stone Age for my thoughts on it all. Seeing them in Raleigh on Jan 30th, and it felt oh so appropriate.
