Typically I don’t play into the ridiculous things I hear and read from State fans, but I felt compelled to give my 2 cents after reading the disgusting article produced by this website last night.
I am one of the few who is a State graduate and a UNC fan. Dean Smith was the sole reason I became a UNC fan. My mother was a flight attendant and happened to be on the same flight with Dean Smith, flying back to Raleigh. He, in no way, owed her any type of friendly conversation, let alone giving her tickets to a UNC game, lower level, since she was unable to afford tickets as a single mother. No obligation, yet did it out of the kindness of his heart.
I also grew up solely hating Dook as my intensity for Carolina basketball grew. I can honestly say that I never disliked or pulled against NC State. I even tried as a student there to become a fan. That all went out the window after my first experience at a UNC/State game at the PNC Arena.
Students were flicking me off and cussing out my mother. All because we wore Carolina gear. At the UNC/NCSU football game at Kenan, State fans were cussing out the elderly and being a drunk mess. Last year, at the UNC/NCSU game at the PNC Arena, students threw dip cans at our players and tried to hit them with those balloons you guys have in the student section. I heard fans threatening to kill (yes, KILL) the refs when a call wasn’t made the way you wanted it. The worst part was the signs.
I find it crazy that we live in a world where many people make large efforts to end bullying, yet it is totally acceptable in the NCSU fan base to display hurtful signs and make hurtful comments on the internet towards the UNC players. Does that happen at the Duke or UNC games? No, it does not.
Last year, the fan base was so embarrassing that an article was written in the Technician about the behavior. And this year, it was taken to a new level. Its disgusting.
And in regards to the cheating scandal, State’s program has been involved with a scandal just as Carolina has. So please don’t act like you guys are angels. Do you honestly think this doesn’t happen anywhere else? For goodness sake, Kentucky has so many one-and-dones that they only have to stay academically eligible for one semester by taking the easiest courses available. And I’m sure Calipari makes it known he isn’t concerned with their academics.
Anyways, if State wants to become a respected basketball program, you need to get your fans in check.
That can all be succinctly summed up as bull. I’ve witnessed all that and more from UNC fans directed towards duke fans. I’ve experienced some of it directed at me as a state fan. I’ve seen it from state fans directed at a UNC fan. I once was part of a group that had a UNC fan with us that nearly had to fight off a mob of drunk state fans on F-bomb alley to keep them from attacking the UNC fan. It happens everywhere. Take off your blue tinted glasses and look at reality. It isn’t pretty.
As for the scandal, remember, this is a self-inflicted wound. 4 decades of holier than thou, carolina way, winning the right way, graduation rates, good grades, etc that was constantly rubbed in the faces of other fans by the media and UNC fans. Now it comes out that what we knew all along was true. It was bull. It was a veil of lies to cover up what is arguably the largest cheating scandal in recent history that was not only a huge recruiting incentive, but also kept players eligible. These weren’t “easy” classes. They were fake. No work. No effort. Institutional cheating!
I for one don’t give a damn UNC cheats. Everybody skirts the rules. But when you piss on me for 40 years and tell me it is rain, you deserve all the derision the world has to give when they figure out it is piss.
packplantpathParticipantAh…go ahead, eat the fruit.
“Ye shall not certainly die.”Some fruit is worth dying over. Especially the sweet kind.
Lacey should have tried to bring the goal down.
packplantpathParticipantLol. You guys have hope. They will play just well enough to keep it close only to be screwed in the last minute.
packplantpathParticipantLook into sling tv. Has ESPN and a few other things. $20 month.
packplantpathParticipantI was impressed with Cat’s response (or lack thereof) and much less impressed with security at Miami.
Yea, in some arenas talking trash about officiating will get you kicked out, in others you can assault players.
packplantpathParticipantI do not like Gott. At all. Not even a little bit. It didn’t start out that way, it just crept up and I don’t really know why. If he got us to the elite 8 this year, I still would not like him and would be ok with firing him. I know, aren’t you glad I’m not in charge 🙂
But, having said that, I’m ok with last night. I also didn’t watch the whole game. Some boneheaded plays, bad turnovers, etc. But in general they did most of the things they needed to and sometimes the ball just didn’t go in. It happens.
The biggest thing I saw is it seems he needs to work on keeping them out of panic mode. With 3 minutes to go and one guy decides he is going to pretend he is still in high school and is 10X better than everybody else and will drive to the basket and score. Down 2 scores with 2-3 minutes it was like they suddenly decided to quit running plays sometimes. That goes on coaching and I felt a time out was needed to rein that in. But I don’t remember what the timeout situation looked like then either.

Kroger has self checkout, affording a degree of the anti-social.<br>Of course it rarely works correctly. If I am having to do the checkout they should give me a discount on the groceries. But noooooo
I prefer going to the self-checkout with beer, wine and several bags of unidentifiable produce without those little stickers!
packplantpathParticipantGrey wakes up with his fur ruffled. He’s becoming a curmudgeon like me that way.
Get these darn kids off my lawn!
packplantpathParticipantOutside of blown coverage, the long ball is always hovering around hope.
Truth…IMO…Receivers have to make it hapoen
And he has thrown quite a few catchable deep balls this season and they just didn’t get pulled in. Some due to good coverage, others the receivers just didn’t quite pull it in.
packplantpathParticipantI find some of you guys responses to this girl a bit disturbing.
God forbid a college girl meets an athlete, likes him, dates him, and ends up doing something stupid to help him out. More than likely this is just a story of a starry eyed kid getting sucked into the world of big time fame and athletics and doing something she shouldn’t have. People make mistakes and I certainly wouldn’t want the mistakes of my late teens and 20’s to define me for life.
The real questions regard those who are doing the prosecuting. If she didn’t sing like a canary, this acquittal is a farce. If she did spill the beans, I expect we will hear about it eventually.

packplantpathParticipantDoes anyone disagree that all cops need body cameras, and should be required to use them?
I’m torn on the idea. While it would be very helpful in these kind of circumstances, these circumstances are quite rare in the grand scheme of police interactions.
Consider the effect it would have on the applicant pool for police. Consider the privacy and data mining implications considering every officer becomes a mobile surveillance station. Would you let an officer with a camera running into your home? If you are a rape or assault victim would you talk to them knowing the camera is rolling? You can’t give the office discretion to turn it off, otherwise I think you would find it conveniently turned off.
Plus, wide angle cameras with fixed point of view are difficult to judge distance and depth and context of interactions.
Even with all that, I’m not sure it is a bad idea, but I wonder if the benefits will outweigh the negatives.
packplantpathParticipantThat is how much times changed in the South during that stretch. In the years since, virtually all signs of bigotry have gone away. There are still individuals out there who are prejudiced and there always will be, but the problem is a very minor one.
Want to know how much things have changed in NC?
A few years ago, I was at the home of a black family in rural, eastern NC and in their yard was a flagpole. On that flag was the U.S. flag and just below it was dixie. That was unexpected, to say the least.
packplantpathParticipantOthers feel we have made a terrible mistake in hiring DD.
Who? I only know of one infrequent poster who is ready to can DD. That is not a common sentiment at all. I’d say most have no clue how he will perform. What we know is he makes crappy lemonade when given lemons. But I think we all want him to succeed and most think he has a decent chance of doing so.
My stand was I had quantitative data that said GSU is a good program and the veracity of attacks was pretty strong.
Good program is relative. They are no bottom feeder who has no chance of winning against teams from power conferences, but nobody expects them to win those games. Seems to me they are a big fish in a little pond. This isn’t exactly david and goliath, but there is no way the playing field wasn’t tilted in our favor significantly. Since losing to them would have been a good sign this season was unlikely to meet the goal of bowl eligibility, I find it very hard for a close win to make me feel that great about the status of our program THIS YEAR. And the games since that one have not done much to improve that outlook for this season. Again, that isn’t so much a reflection of DD, as it is the state of the program he inherited.
packplantpathParticipantThe amount of discussion and the number of posters here seems to have declined, which is really too bad.
my opinion is the posts here lately are all idiocy or sanctimonious holier than thou bs.
This thread is a good demo of both.
packplantpathParticipantUnprofitable bowl games is by design if you ask me. As is the lack of profitability of athletic departments in general. Look up hollywood accounting sometime. Money is being made. Gobs of it. Everybody just make sure it isn’t profit. For reference, star wars return of the Jedi was not profitable. Neither was Forest gump. Or most other blockbuster movies.

I agree…at what point do you expect production; one, two, three years? As a supervisor, I am expected to produce now.Do you bring in 25 new high school grads a year, have 60 of 85 employees with 2 or fewer years of experience, and have turnover rate of 25+ people per year?
Clearly we should fire him. He has a nearly 20% turnover rate every year. In fact, he’s never been able to keep his most productive players more than 4 years. UNACCEPTABLE!
packplantpathParticipantAt least gt’s defense has to be getting tired…… Not the way we prefer but.

In fact, there is tons of evidence that once a person votes for a candidate they lose their impartiality regarding the candidateBegging the question… “Is it possible to be truly impartial regarding political candidates at all… before or after, whether you vote for one or don’t?”
Something like 60% (this falls into the 99th percentile of statistics that are made up on the spot, regardless it is a high percentage) of those who vote always(or almost always) vote for one party. Impartiality on their part is very rare. The remaining voters are the swing voters. Evidence suggests that these voters can be impartial until they cast their vote. Then it is very hard for them to critically judge the candidate. Oddly enough, these swing voters seem to vote for the person instead of the party and retain the ability to recognize failings of the party of their candidate even when they generally find it very hard to criticise the candidate they voted for and recognize their failings.
Couple this with the fact that we are almost as likely to inherit our families politics as their hair color and it makes me even more skeptical of elections.
packplantpathParticipantMy take is that no matter what you believe, half the country thinks you are wrong. We no longer vote for politicians or candidates or ideas. We vote teams. Team red vs team blue. In fact, there is tons of evidence that once a person votes for a candidate they lose their impartiality regarding the candidate. They now have skin in the game and can’t afford to be wrong.
Me? I don’t vote except in primaries or small local elections. By the time it is a statewide or state representative election the wrong candidate is already running. My primary ballot selections are a who’s who of principled losers instead of unscrupulous winners.
Look at the pikeville malt beverage results. 115 for, 117 against. HAH!
packplantpathParticipantI’m not rick, but my prediction if tob was still our coach is two conference wins last year and 2 this year.
With tob, we’d have more wins but no hope. With dd,I have hope but no wins…
