^^NCSU88 – two things the DoD & the NFL have in common:

    1. Certain of their occupations are known to cause serious brain injury
    2. Both of them would rather punt on the problem than deal with it now.

The DoD has some valid excuses on the matter. The NFL does not. If you notice the stuff the NFL throws cash at to get headlines — it is super long-term research like CTE research (hmm… let’s wait 20 years to see how things progress). They are trying to protect their cash cow now. (I know there are also examples to the contrary) I have been involved in brain injury research for the DoD and also had discussions with the NFL, NFL teams, trainers, and associated research centers. Trust me, these NFL guys don’t want to fix the problem — or at least, not if it costs them their golden TV $$$ goose.

I love football, but the reality is that there is conclusive evidence that playing football as it is played today causes irreparable brain injury. I don’t think football should be allowed to be played professionally – a 20 year career between high school, college, and pros is simply too much for a human brain to take. You end up with these tragic situations. It is sad and unnecessary.

In the long term, pro football as it is played today is doomed… we can only close our eyes to the truth for so long. With the right rules changes and protections, amateur football could survive. People can choose to do things that are risky or harmful, but a civil society shouldn’t prop up such choices.

No offense to PackFanInLA, but I simply cannot pull for a Chicago-area school that considers itself an ACC basketball school but not an ACC football school, plus sees itself as an elite university (down their nose at the rest of us).

I certainly understand not rooting for ND in football. But their basketball team is a group of hard-working kids. They don’t get the favoritism that the football program gets in any regard. In terms of the elitism, I think your description fits Duke and UNC better than ND (which is mostly comprised of midwestern folks from good families). But, at ND there is that small element of students and alumni that are like the “my daddy is an investment banker, and I almost got into Harvard” — much like that same set of kids at Duke. Those are the most pretentious kind.

That being said, the faculty at both ND and Duke would readily admit that our engineering school crushes theirs.

What irks me is how elite schools are defined — how many investment bankers and McKinsey consultants poop out of these places and charge high fees (Duke, ND), then the second tier elites are somehow great for pumping out dentists and pretentious lawyers (UNC, UVA). But of course these schools are mainly just over-charging rich mommies and daddies to churn out entitled kids with meaningless undergraduate majors.

The best school in the ACC is probably Georgia Tech, but they get no props. State neither. It’s bizarre.

Lets root for ND from here on out. I am biased, I have degrees from both schools, but as much as I used to hate ND before I went there, I eventually realized that they care about young kids and fair competition.

Like it or not, when we had some [very small] issues, we cleaned up shop. Notre Dame isn’t perfect, but they respect competition, and would never institutionally cheat. (I do believe this. I also don’t think NC State would ever cheat like UNC).

UNC is the neighbor that drives a BMW and brags about his fancy vacations when you know he is cheating on his taxes and lying to his customers. ND is nothing like that.

We should be proud of our team. We competed. Even if we went up to Kentucky today, we wouldn’t have crapped our pants and laid down. We won many tough games when everything was on the line (starting at our game @LOU).

You negative people need to grow up. What’s the point of this stuff? You have young kids who play their hardest, you have a top 50 coach (at least) who may not have coached as well as RICK PITINO, and you guys wanna whine. Pitino is a legend. Look at his battle-weary face… this crap isn’t easy. We could have won that game with a few different bounces or an inspired performance from one of the kidsteak on the team.

I didn’t see a lack of virtue, desire, or heart.

We can win the ACC tourney this year. We have shown that we can compete with every team in this league. It has been a long time since I have felt like there is nobody out of reach.

^mista wolf – you hit the nail on the head. The rotten trial lawyers are the only ones to win here. They only need to find 1 or 2 gullible students to be the face of the Lawsuit. Then they can bring suit on behalf of the entire ‘class.’ imagine all the hard-working sw engineers who poured out their heart and soul into making that video game over a 10 year period of time. And as you articulated, the slimebag lawyers will capture almost all of the remaining value after killing the product.
