Wufpacker, are you sure this is the season for you to quit your glue-sniffing? You might want to wait until football or basketball are on more sure footing.
I love reading. And I am a slooooow reader. One gripe with college and post- was there was so much reading, I couldn’t read it all and get anything out of it. I like to take my time and really soak it in. Over the past several years, I’ve tried to go back and read some of the classics. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed The Leatherstocking Tales, having gotten through Deerslayer, Last of the Mohicans, and Pathfinder. A lot of people over here have read them and count them as some of their favorite childhood books. Something also inspired me to read A Tale of Two Cities. The only Dickens I had read before was my annual reading of A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations in high school that I barely remember. What a fantastic author, though. He rarely says anything direct, rather giving such great description as to allow you to see everything happening both internally and externally in relation to the characters. I think I’d rather read Dickens describe paint drying than some other stuff that’s out there.
With that, I also don’t really do NY resolutions, but last year I made a goal to read 15 books a year. Probably a pretty light goal for most, but as I said, I am a slooooow reader. My problem was organizing when to read what. I wanted to read more entertaining things (fiction) as well as things that would help stimulate me intellectually (I enjoy things about philosophy and faith). Plus I had a magazine subscription I enjoyed reading. So, I created a reading plan: alternate reading my magazine and the “intellectual” books at breakfast. Before bed and on Saturday breakfast, read the more entertaining book. It’s really helped me be productive in my reading. Just a suggestion for anyone who wants to read, but is undisciplined like me.
PackerInRussiaParticipantI’m also not able to locate a place to start a thread. Maybe I’m missing something obvious. Or maybe I don’t need to start new threads. Entirely possible.
Very happy to see them back. They were a fun part of the day when they were really hopping.PackerInRussiaParticipant“They said that his continual reappointment as the department chairman, a job most professors hold for 10 years at most, reflected the university’s indifference to what was going on there.”
Are they sure it was indifference?
With the right PR, you can rule the world these days. In an information age, he who controls the information, controls the age. Props to UNC; they’re the masters.
12/28/2013 at 10:06 AM in reply to: “Thunder Dan” Will Continue Making Pack Players Stronger and Faster, Is Promoted #33480PackerInRussiaParticipantFor some reason I had no idea he was still with the Wolfpack program. Thanks for the update. I wish my first name were “Thunder.”
PackerInRussiaParticipant“NCAA was extremely kind to let it go as PJ being done for the year.”
They’re nothing if not kind.
PackerInRussiaParticipantThank goodness another rogue is removed from an otherwise spotless institute. If they keep getting rid of the rogues, they’ll need to be renamed Swiss Cheese University.
12/18/2013 at 10:46 AM in reply to: ACC Digital Network – Why do people put their names on obviously bad work? #34635PackerInRussiaParticipantThe worst part about it is that they left out that one dunk by the one guy that he had over that other guy. That one was gooood.
PackerInRussiaParticipantGreywolf, I’ve often felt the same sentiment and read it here on this site and always have those last two lines in the back of my mind. No matter how many times you swear off Wolfpack sports, you just can’t ever quit.
12/14/2013 at 1:21 PM in reply to: Mark Gottfried Would Like To Play a Conference Game in Reynolds Coliseum #34660PackerInRussiaParticipantWould be fun for sure. As observers have pointed out, the PNC (RBC at least when I was there) can certainly get loud when it’s packed and the crowd is really into it. And that’s usually against the big-time opponents that would be the most fun to play in Reynolds. A logistics challenge for sure, but you never know. Could you just not include that game in the package in a future year and sell tickets to that game separately? Could you get people to pay more to cover the decrease in number of tickets? I know they already play in Reynolds, but playing a “real” opponent might up the ante a bit. The fact that they still play there once a year shows that it’s not completely forgotten even from the admin side.
PackerInRussiaParticipant^^^ Livin’ it up at the hotel Carolina. What a nice surprise. Bring your ablibis.
PackerInRussiaParticipantThe past 2 games FT% has been much better (81.8% and 86.7%). FT defense has to improve! Hopefully they’ve been working on that in practice. I always found rubbing the ball under my armpit before handing it to the shooter to be a fairly effective method. Another one is rolling the ball very slowly back to the shooter.
PackerInRussiaParticipantGreat news and thanks for the update.
PackerInRussiaParticipant^^ Agree on the “house money” mindset. Why not go for it on 4th down? What do you have to lose? You get to paint yourself (to recruits) as a guy who isn’t afraid to test the limits and take risks and other things like that that could give you an edge.
PackerInRussiaParticipant“I hold my breath every time Vandy jumps.”
Well, at least you don’t have to hold it for very long.
Alpha, I agree completely about the “team” aspect. As I was watching the game against the Beach the other day, I was thinking about how much more enjoyable it is to watch this group play together.
PackerInRussiaParticipantMista Wolf, you mean you’re not gonna join the lawsuit and get your $96? I’ve wondered how that works. Will the athletes have until a certain date to join and then they divide the $40 mil evenly among them (minus legal fees, etc.)? Will anyone try to make the case that they should get more money than others (someone from Alabama vs. Southwest Connecticut State for example)?
PackerInRussiaParticipantI’m all verklempt.
From a PR perspective, that doesn’t seem to be a big win for the athletes (if the game is gone). So, if EA Sports made a NCAA game using schools’ real names and assigning strength to various aspects of each team (QBs, WRs, LBs, etc.) based on the real players’ strengths and weaknesses, but assigned random height, weight, skin color, jersey numbers, etc., could they still make a game? From a marketability perspective, where’s the line between keeping it “realistic” without infringing on athletes’ rights and making it too unrealistic for people to care. For example, how important is it for people that the game weights teams’ ability based on their actual projected strengths?
And what do Madden and other NFL games do as far as compensation? Are they paying the NFL or players?PackerInRussiaParticipantI sensed you were trying to tell me something; like there was some subliminal message or something, but I’m not sure what it was. But, for some reason I have an urge to eat a Three Musketeers while riding a tricycle and listening to Thrice. Of course riding a tricycle right now would be silly because it’s only like 3 degrees outside.

05/15/2012 at 2:14 AM in reply to: UPDATED: Orange County DA asks SBI to probe UNC-CH academic scandal #39321PackerInRussiaParticipantSo their response has consistently been: “We didn’t know about it (in other words, it’s not our fault;” “This was a rogue (fill-in-the-blank)” “We’re convinced this is an isolated incident;” etc. Do these sound like the reactions of an institution that actually has a proud academic heritage? If so, I’d expect something along the lines of contrition, anger, embarrassment; something that showed that they’re not happy that this would happen at their school. They don’t seem surprised at all, though; they don’t even seem upset that this could happen in a place of supposed academic superiority. They’re not even accidentally remorseful; like they’re not even surprised. They’re unintentionally revealing that they know the whole “public ivy” business is just talk.
PackerInRussiaParticipant^^ Good call on Foghorn Leghorn. There’s a good concept idea: Looney Tunes versions of helmets.
PackerInRussiaParticipantI liked the BC Eagle wing design and the FSU arrowhead design. I even liked the Heels blue helmet with the foot on it. Some of the rest were OK. Most of them seem too gaudy to me. I liked this year’s red helmets also. Of the above designs for us, I liked the red facemask, but wasn’t too thrilled with any of the helmet designs. At 30, I wouldn’t say I’m too old and definitely not a fogey.
