I think a bigger deal gets made by people here than probably by the players. They choose the uniform, then it’s over. We’re the ones going on about it. I guess they should have standard clothes pre-picked out every day so that they don’t spend time choosing what to wear because it takes away from thinking about football? Or what to eat? Or what classes to take? Talk about a slippery slope.

    * Sunday saw a rematch of David Amerson vs. Cordarrelle Patterson. The only two times (that I can recall) the ball being thrown Patterson’s way with Amerson covering, 1) Amerson let Patterson go thinking the safety would pick him up. He didn’t. The ball was way overthrown otherwise it would have been an easy touchdown 2) Amerson had better position on the ball than Patterson, staying ahead of him. He cradled the ball and, although he caught it over his shoulder, it was ruled incomplete because he landed out of bounds. On further review, it looked like a catch with the announcers and Mike Pierera (sp?) calling it a catch, but the incomplete call stood. Would have been a sweet interception.
    * Griffin had some illusive moments just to remind everyone why he was put back in at QB. Still held on to the ball too long at times and that last incompletion (not the very last, but the last one when they still had a chance) to Garcon that would have given them a first down was bad.
    * The good was that a QB was finally in who could hit DeSean Jackson in stride.
The last two points are irrelevant if you’re not a Skins fan.

Kevin Ngandi (sp?) of ESPN tried to get Roy to answer questions this morning, and after stumbling over a couple, Roy played the old “I’ll be glad to talk basketball if you want to talk basketball, but I’m not going to talk about that other crap” line.

Hard to not talk about crap when the smell in the air is so strong.

Roy Williams: “I’ve never had a player ineligible. If you want to be a cynic & say, ‘no joke, with what they did,’ that’s a bunch of crap.”

No, that’s common sense. (again with the crap?)

Roy defending Wayne Walden now. “Wayne Walden is one of the most ethical people I’ve ever known in my life.”

Considering the people you’ve been surrounded by, that’s not a title of distinction. It’s about as meaningful as “smartest UNC athlete.”

More importantly, you forgot to calculate how this affects the ACC title belt.

I also agree on the race side of things (and not just because it’s UNC). I’m wary or calling out “racism” when it’s unnecessary and also try to avoid following whatever is the politically correct thing to say. The main reason is because I think there are times when it’s a valid charge and it diminishes the seriousness of it when so many things are called “racist.” You’d like to think that black and white (and other) players who may not otherwise get a college degree are taught and given the benefits of education while also playing a sport. In other words, that there is care and development of the whole person and they are given the opportunity to succeed in life beyond sports, since it’s a small minority of people who actually go pro and have a long, successful career compared to those who want to. At UNC, there was none of that. It was all about sports and their success and the “student”-athletes didn’t matter a bit. Because a majority are black and it’s an AFAM program, I think it’s fair to say that black athletes were the target and main victims (again, I usually hate that word). They continued to get fake degrees and UNC was able to tout their record of graduation success without actually giving a benefit to the athlete.
With that, I think it’s time for a new moniker: UNC-Plantation.

That’s awesome. If you went back and looked at all incoming players over the years, I wonder where Vandenberg would rank on the “likeliness of getting a contract with an NBA team” list.

They’re so on the defensive over there that Larry was probably just trying to communicate that there’s no way that there are any academic improprieties happening that he’s involved in or knows about. Problem is, he made his point of non-involvement a bit too strongly.

Regarding adequate punishment, at a minimum, the NCAA should hold them to current APR standards which state:

Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible…A 930 APR predicts about a 50 percent graduation rate. Teams falling below an APR of 930 face sanctions…”

What are the penalties for teams falling behind in APR? The first level of penalties limits teams to 16 hours of practice per week over five days. This represents a reduction of four hours and one day per week of practice time. The four fewer hours are to be replaced with academic activities. The second level adds competition reductions. The third level includes a variety of potential penalties including coaching suspensions and restricted NCAA membership.

    Link

It would be interesting to look at all of the cases that ineligible athletes were eligible only because of fake classes/fake grades and calculate for how many years they would have been under the APR requirement (if any) and get an idea of what their penalties should be. Point: If the final penalties are less than the APR-required penalties, then it’s more advantageous to cheat, get caught, and do the time than it is to not cheat.

As a form of self-punishment, UNC has announced it will unretire Tyler Hansbrough’s number. “Given the unimaginable level of self-awe and love we have for ourselves, you can imagine this hurts us in a deep way and we feel that any additional punishment from the NCAA will be unnecessary,” Bubba Cunningham said without a trace of irony.

I hate that we live in a time when my temperature rises and I expect the worse as I read “Coach Gottfried pays…” Glad he’s just paying homage 🙂 Hopefully we see that suit on the sideline this year.

de·fense noun \di-?fen(t)s; as antonym of “offense,” often ?d?-?\

    Full Definition of DEFENSE

    1
a : the act or action of defending <the defense of our country> <speak out in defense of justice>
    b : a defendant’s denial, answer, or plea
    2
a : capability of resisting attack
b : defensive play or ability

    Just in case anyone forgot.

And by the way, I’m with Greywolf also. Give Dave Huxtable a load of near future NFLers and I’ll bet he suddenly becomes a lot better DC.

FSU wasn’t really that good that year

Yeah, I remember the field storming being somewhat anticlimactic. It was the fourth game in which the 3 previous had been lost. The Pack was supposed to be really good. FSU was not. FSU should have lost that game; not a typical FSU team. It was the last game of an overall good season (the best season wins-wise) and it was as if everyone looked around and was like, “Hey, wanna storm the field?” “OK, sure, why not?” To me it seemed more about the experience of going down on the field and tearing down a goalpost than a reaction to some major win.
Although the on-field reaction was hostile, the admin reaction wasn’t terrible. I don’t recall any negative emails or anything; just cutting up the goal post and selling it to commemorate the season.

That ’02 goalpost tearing-down was my only field rush. I was nearing the end of my college career and figured it would be my last shot. That was a fun time down on the field. I remember #8 (Victor Stephens/Stevens?) riding the goal post as it was starting to sway. I remember the security people. Is that when they were spraying people? It was a battle to get the goal post out of there. That’s the goal post that Lee sold for $103/foot, right?

On the topic of the former Kansas coach’s canning, here’s a nice tidbit from this article on ESPN:

The man does know how to negotiate a contract, though. According to USA Today, his combined severance from Notre Dame and Kansas in 2015 will be nearly $4.6 million, which will rank him among the highest paid coaches in the country.

Only he’ll be chilling on the sofa eating Cheetos. Life is so cool!

Adventuroo, I also checked the polls just for fun. Certainly not expecting to see the Pack in the Top 25 or anything, but wondered if they’d earned any respect in the votes department (1 vote in the AP). Was most entertained by the USA Today Coaches [Interns] Poll which is officially (on the USA Today site) the Amway Coaches Poll (not even kidding). FSU flipped with Alabama. And there are still 7 people who think UNC deserves Top 25 votes. Dark horses die hard; especially when they’re light blue.

So, we beat GSU who played GT close who beat VT by a few who beat OSU by 2 TD’s. So, we can trade all that in for a win against Ohio State, right?

I agree that it’s not PC to call this stupid. That was a really dumb thing to do. He deserves to be slapped upside the head or something. I can see where a PC element would be blamed when it comes to any type of suspension. Is being stupid suspension-worthy? At the same time I can see the university’s position: this is a high-profile guy who, at the moment, is the biggest representative of the university. Sometimes stupid has to carry a higher consequence.
