PackerInRussiaParticipantIs it true that Marshawn Lynch was a guest lecturer at UNC for a summer course?
02/01/2015 at 3:26 PM in reply to: Saturday’s best & highlights of State’s win at Georgia Tech #72719PackerInRussiaParticipantGT kid gets one shot for free pizza. UVA kid gets 18 seconds for $18,000. If I’m the GT kid, I’m transferring next year.
PackerInRussiaParticipantI expected this to be one of those things that I knew in the back of my mind, but had forgotten, but I had never heard this before. Very interesting.
PackerInRussiaParticipant^^ And if you have none of those things, you just skip straight to the check.
PackerInRussiaParticipantThat would be ‘ungood’, as they might say Chapel Hill.
Let’s just hope we don’t get to doubleplusungood.
PackerInRussiaParticipantWhat helped State “blow” the 18-lead is what helped them build it in the first place – Notre Dame’s 3-pointers. They were shooting them in the first half, but weren’t hitting them. They’re a 40% 3-point shooting team, so they were bound to start hitting them. They had multiple guys no 3-pointers in the first half who regularly make them. The best way to make up a big deficit is to make a bunch of 3’s (7 in the second half) and that’s exactly what they did. Of course there’s more to it than that, but that certainly helped.
PackerInRussiaParticipantI was wondering about Cat not playing, but I think the way the game played out and who was in the game had the best players in at the best time. With the Martins in in the first half, they built an 18-point lead. Granted that was helped by Notre Dame missing shots, but it was working fine to have the better defensive player sitting if the offense was clicking. Abu was being effective, so KW was waiting his turn. When the Martins lost their effectiveness and defense was slipping, Cat got his shot on the court and his defense slowed them down and with him out there, they got the lead back and were a crazy inbounds pass away from being able to having a chance to be able to ice the win by hitting (assuming Notre Dame would have fouled). The way a player plays in a certain part of the game doesn’t mean that if they had played all other minutes of the game, the results (score) can be extrapolated. What Gottfried did in the first half personnel-wise seemed to work. Bringing in Cat for defense also seemed to work. I thought he did a good job of player management even though it meant sitting a player who has played a high percentage of most (all?) other games this year. Of course there could have just been something else going on with Cat. If they’d won the game, I think the personnel decisions would get higher reviews.
PackerInRussiaParticipant“Adam Woodbury poked Kaminsky and Nigel Hayes’ eyes tonight, and neither looked accidental. It was actually pretty annoying to watch, and hopefully McCaffery punishes Woodbury. Bush league play there …”
Ah, the ol’ 3 Stooges defense. I’m sure a cream pie came flying in within seconds.
On the subject of defense and fouling, I’ve thought that fouls should be called similar to in hockey. When there’s an on-floor foul, the ref’s hand goes up to indicate a foul has been committed, but play continues until the team scores or the other team gets possession of the ball in which case the whistle blows and the outcome of the foul is assessed (free throw if in the bonus or ball returned to the team fouled for an in-bounds pass at the spot of the foul). It’s sort of like NBA continuation, but it goes much further. Like someone mentioned, it doesn’t seem fair that a team should be rewarded for committing a foul (i.e. bumping a person who has a free run at the basket b/c you played poor defense, thus negating the likely points and making them pass the ball in or have to hit free throws. Thus, the likely points become less likely.) Of course it brings up lots of potential difficulties, such as what if the offense commits a foul or loses the ball out of bounds or something. In other words, are they playing completely with house money sort of like off-sides in football? But since it’s just an idea thrown out for fun on an internet message board, I don’t have to spend time thinking about all of that 🙂
PackerInRussiaParticipantAfter that 2-pt conversion play, I immediately thought of the UNC touchdown. Of course it doesn’t take much for me to think of that touchdown. It’s permanently embedded in my memory.
PackerInRussiaParticipantGlad Roseboro is enrolled. Thanks for the update.
PackerInRussiaParticipantSeaWolf, my thoughts exactly.
PackerInRussiaParticipantI have a recording. Do you remember approximately how late in the 3rd quarter? I quit watching after Oregon went up a few scores and skipped to the end, so I don’t recall it, but I could go back and check.
PackerInRussiaParticipantWas really pleased with the game compared to last. Defense was much improved and helped create points which has been sorely missing. The blocks were much more effective too. Anya’s blocks are fun to watch, but when he smacks it out of bounds, they still get the ball. It seemed like the blocks against Pitt resulted in a change of possession and fast break opportunities. It was nice to see Turner get some points finally. If they are able to maintain the defensive effort and play better during conference play, you have to point to the non-conference schedule and playing tougher times that help show your weaknesses. Better to iron things out before conference play begins. Of course it’s more likely to see an up-and-down roller coaster rather than a sharp turnaround. In way, way, way too early conference play, though, you can’t ask for any better. Two dominant wins. Here’s hoping that trend continues Wednesday (although, truth be told, I am scared to watch that game; expecting ugly, but hoping to be proven wrong).
PackerInRussiaParticipantThat’s funny of the OSU girl. It seems like she instinctively reaches over and rubs the guy’s head without thinking, then realizes she’s doing it and catches herself. His eyes make it look like it was unexpected, too. It’s like he’s trying to look over and see who the heck is touching him without moving his head. Maybe in her distress (she seemed distressed with her hands on her head; don’t know what was happening in the game at the time), she forgot which side her guy was sitting on and started rubbing the wrong guy. Whatever the reason, pretty funny.
PackerInRussiaParticipant^^ I was listening to an interview with Cal Thomas (no matter your political affiliation, he’s been around the block a few times and has a voice of experience even if you don’t agree with what that voice says) a while back and he was talking about that very thing. He was talking about the days when he was getting going in journalism and how they were told to just report the news. They (the news-side) weren’t depended on for revenue, so they could just focus on getting the story right and focusing on the facts no matter where they led. Entertainment was entertainment and news was news. Then, that philosophy changed and suddenly news was looked to to help drive profit and entertainment and news were wed and it hasn’t been the same since.
PackerInRussiaParticipantWas an awesome play. Couldn’t believe they pulled it off after it looked like it was going to get blown up.
PackerInRussiaParticipantPoor guy. Should have just gone to Carolina, then he wouldn’t need to transfer for the Ivy experience.
Seriously, though, hate to see him go, but no hard feelings.PackerInRussiaParticipantHe and two other former Wolfpackers are nominees for the NFL Man of the Year award. http://www.nfl.com/manoftheyear
Good job to all three.PackerInRussiaParticipantSpeaking of former NC State point guards, at least according to his stats, Rodney Purvis isn’t exactly lighting it up at UConn. Haven’t seen him play, so just going by the numbers.
PackerInRussiaParticipantThat was an unenjoyable brand of “basketball” to watch. Is there any difference between Tennessee’s full-court press and West Virginia other than one is Tennessee and the other is West Virginia? Tennessee’s resulted in a Ralston Turner three-point downpour with others also getting open shots underneath. West Virginia’s caused all kinds of trouble. Maybe just being more physical? Any more physical and they would have needed helmets and pads.
PackerInRussiaParticipantThat is hilarious. Maybe Carolina will recruit him as a sideline comic.
PackerInRussiaParticipantAnd just when I was about to turn off the Cuse-Nova game thinking the Orange had it wrapped up…
PackerInRussiaParticipantJust saw on ESPN.com that Mick Cronin (Cincy’s coach) is out indefinitely with an aneurysm. No medical expert, but just the sound of that doesn’t seem very good. Hope it’s something he can recover from.
They play the Pack Dec 30.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12056548/cincinnati-bearcats-coach-mick-cronin-aneurysmPackerInRussiaParticipantVaWolf82, I feel the exact same about recruiting. I appreciate being kept in the loop on this site.
I have an idea, but could someone explain what a preferred walk-on is? -
