Amazing considering we haven’t been a top 25 team in 25 years. (No being ranked for a couple weeks doesn’t count).

Anyone ever stop to think what last season would be like if Purvis stuck around? He’s far superior to his replacement, Dez Lee. Better defender, scorer, shooter. I mean, we would have still sucked…but just saying…losing transfers hurts.

So if TJ returns we might make the Sweet 16 where we’ll lose to Dayton, Wichita, Michigan, Florida, Arizona, UNC, Duke, or if God is in a humorous mood, Arizona State.

More likely TJ leaves and the fan-base rests easy b/c we’ll be a bubble team. Therefore you are required to be happy we made the dance playing so many sophomores.

Archie is not a no-brainier grand slam hire. Reasonable people can disagree on him being an upgrade. I have a certain level of conviction about him from a brief window.

If you have elite expectations for State basketball as I do, you may be more willing to gamble. Anyone believing Gott will turn us into an elite program hasn’t watched the same 3 seasons I have.

I wholeheartedly agree Gott’s an upgrade over Herb.

It is a private school so unfortunately we can’t view the contract, which was signed in February for what its worth.

I wouldn’t expect the buyout to be insurmountable. I mean…..half our fan-base thought we were going to outbid Arizona the last go ’round.

Glad for Archie and his cute wife. This might at least buy us a couple more years to see what Gott can do with his jewel recruiting class. Let’s see if he can keep kids from transferring. We only have one recruit left from his first class.

Unless a dozen children are molested, you’ll have a hard time dragging the NCAA back to campus. No one outside the state cares…no public pressure will be exerted.

Great theater though I hope I’m wrong.

^ Good point. Upgrading is different than firing. I haven’t seen a single post mention Gott should be fired b/c he’s God awful like Lowe. It’s more like….uhhh….he ain’t Herb or Lowe, but he wasn’t quite what we hoped for….could we do better? Oh wait, there is an alumnus who appears to be a home run hire.

The “raise” Gott received in Supplemental salary is not payable upon termination – wisely done by Yow. Frankly he’s overly compensated (3rd highest paid coach pre-expansion).

My point stands that we could fire him for much cheaper than the “headline” payout. I would also expect him to land on his feet in a SEC job. If he doesn’t job-search (like post-Alabama where he went into broadcasting a.k.a. traveling around country and chilling in hotels….doing whatever it is you do w/ that lifestyle…..) then he’s not obligated to receive the buyout.

^ Mad props to Yow. That is an important clause that I would be surprised if it is vanilla language.

Ironically it would be incredibly cheap (maybe free??) to fire a “decent” coach than an awful coach.

^ There will never be unanimous opinions on Gottfried but if we frame the argument to….well….we admit Gott is OKAY, but wouldn’t you rather have Archie??? That dude can recruit AND coach!! I think framing discussion that way is much more palatable to the average fan.

But really the opinions of the masses are negligible. I doubt Yow has the courage or foresight to make a splash that breaks social norms.

After reviewing Gott’s contract I’m convinced money should not be a deciding factor.

I think Gottfried could get a decent coaching job in a different conference (if he tried which he is legally obligated to do). Ironically he’d be an upgrade at just about any SEC school.

    So I read Gott’s contract here: http://media.scout.com/media/doc/92/927822.pdf

    Highlights:
His base salary is $750,000 and runs to end of 2018.

    Bad News:
This is a roughly $3.4 million payout. That’s a lot for one of the poorest programs in ACC (and we are I have posted on this before and linked to sources).

    Good News:
It doesn’t have to be paid in lump sum, rather it would be paid out monthly through 2018. $750,000 could easily be made by simply filling the empty seats in the arena which a GREAT coach could do.

    More Good News:
Also, there is a clause that states: “COACH acknowledges obligation to minimize payments due and agrees to make every reasonable effort to obtain other employment and be compensated at commensurate rate.”

    Conclusion:
So, if the apologist are correct, and Gott is a valuable coaching commodity, then we should have no trouble firing him b/c he’d easily land on his feet and provide an efficient means for us to hire Archie Miller.

Assuming he’s a good coach and could obtain employment, we have no financial reason to keep him around. Also a strong argument could be made that additional revenue from a GREAT coach would easily cover the $750,000 annual payout.

Funny how everyone admits pre-season that media expectations are useless but at season’s end many grasp to that stale data as if only to ease the cognitive dissonance in their minds. Its human nature. You have to acknowledge cognitive biases and challenge your thinking to overcome.

Isn’t Archie’s wife from NC State days? She’s cute.

Sh*t I’m so happy for Archie but each win makes it less likely we’ll ever get him.

Wow. Just wow. So happy for Archie he’s got as much coaching talent as his big brother if not more. Huge gamble to hire him 3 years ago. Huge mistake not to now.

Just thinking of some near misses – coulda woulda shoulda – in past decade: Beilein, Calipari, Sean Miller, Archie Miller, Shaka, Gregg Marshall. Archie Miller (deserves to be here twice).

In a few years Gott will have NC State losing to VA Tech twice a year. If Wake and GA Tech upgrade similarly….oh Jesus help us.

The choke job ranks among the worst in history. There is little debate. However, coaches should be judged by the following criteria:

    1) body of work (includes all their choke jobs and vice versa).
    2) skill relative to peer group.
    3) anyone else want to hire them?

Gott’s body of work and peer-group comparison suggest that he is a very good recruiter but average coach. He made an Elite 8 with an NBA All Star PG and an athletic supporting cast. The HOPE was he would recruit EVEN BETTER here, and hence break his high-water mark and take us to a Final 4. This is feasible assuming his recruiting keeps pace and we play Guns N Roses “Patience” on repeat. Even good coaches need luck in the dance.

Lest we forget, Gott was the backup to the backup…actually scratch that. He wasn’t a serious candidate until KABOOM.

Do not use the media’s pre-season prediction as a benchmark to judge a coach – that’s not cool. Why use stale data that is worthless to begin with?

The theory of relativity was conceived by Einstein using a simple “mind experiment”. Lighter, moving train, two people equidistant apart on train, 1 person on platform…and voila. He discovered relativity.

Well, do the same thing to this Wolfpack Squad. Did we not have good talent compared to many schools we faced? Could you not imagine a Jim L or an Archie Miller or a Shaka Smart having a more successful season with this team? Mind experiment with this team and it doesn’t get too hard to imagine the past few years would ALL have been NCAA tournament teams with more chance to go deep.

Or you could put Gott on the Miami team from last year, or on UVA’s team this year. Think Gott would have won the ACC with either??? Think Shaka or Archie could…that’s not too hard to believe.

Frankly I couldn’t see him EVER winning the dance, unless he had some of those UNC/Duke teams. Even then…he would need luck. Roy is the only “average” coach that comes to recent memory and frankly he’s better than Gott.

Hiring Gott is a sunk cost. It should not be factored in when determining our future. If Archie isn’t hire away, give Gott one more year to lessen financial cost of firing him and hire Archie.

$$ is always a factor. Wake can pay an extra million a year and he knows he can win there. Plus Gary Williams approves of Ron Wellman.

We don’t need Archie we have Gott for the next 20 years. Errrr yikes that doesn’t sound appealing does it? Wait till he stops recruiting well then the wheels will really come off. No NCAA bids.

Already had a Wake alum laugh at me when I asked if they’d take Gott. Similar to Herb, everyone lauds Gotts mediocrity (NCAA bids) but no one would actually hire him.

Is Rick the only poster with some sense? I don’t know what’s worse our coach or our fans who accept losing and exhibit poor analytical skills.

I don’t know if we can afford it but By God if we can do so then you hire Archie this year and hope Gott finds an even more pathetic program to take him so we save money. Actually we know he will milk the buyout and go on a two year year bender being an analyst like post-Alabama.

Oh wow just read some earlier post. Attribute that to the booze starting at lunch. For context I work on Wall Street with winners and hate seeing losers back home. Being a winner starts with attitude and I hate them but at least unc alumni have that. Our fans don’t. So used to be red headed step child farmers we just keep accepting it in the back end with no lube. Disgusting.

I’m less drunk now and stand by what I said. We are losers for accepting this. VA Tech knows hiring a loser is a sunk cost when they see it. To say this loss was an epic meltdown is an insult to Sendek. He never had this talent. Gott is a loser and I said it right after Dayton upset. Us making the dance was horrible bc it gives losers vindication. Hire Archie this season. Gott sucks this game is one piece in a long line of evidence. There is little reasonable doubt.
