Rebounding wasn’t bad….the balls didn’t bounce our way. For the non quant minded that is akin to random variability. Rebounding has seemed to be a strength only because we have had massive height advantages, at almost every position, during the first 6 games. No way we can expect to out rebound a team of Purdue’s height, especially when the balls don’t bounce our way.
packalum44ParticipantGott teams are so so so awful down the stretch. Up 20 or down 10, talented or not, they miraculously find ways to lose in every way imaginable.
packalum44ParticipantThe balls haven’t bounced our way tonight but still no excuse for Gott’s team that make head scratching mind numbing mistakes.
packalum44ParticipantCat is easily the most talented person on the team and has the worst feel for the game.
packalum44ParticipantCat needs to learn how to make a basic entry pass into the post.
packalum44ParticipantHave called a decent game.
packalum44ParticipantThe REFFFFFFSSSSSSSS
packalum44ParticipantFor all the deniers who think somehow losing Tyler Lewis doesn’t hurt this team….would sure be nice to have a McD All American to sub in for Cat when he’s having an atrocious night.
packalum44ParticipantWhy rush that shot Cat? Why miss every free throw you’ve taken tonight. Where’s Tyler Lewis when you need him.
packalum44ParticipantIf I’m Gott I play 10 each game and full court press ala Duke when they have depth or Oliver Purnell’s Clemson teams. The guys do not run his offense well at all we need to create turnovers and play to our strengths…depth & athleticism. What better way to do this than full court pressure?
The offense may “click” during the season, but it is an NBA offense…on a team with 7 underclassmen.
packalum44ParticipantWe make the dumbest fouls in games then get upset when the refs start calling it tighter against us. I haven’t seen Purdue push guys in the back or hack the head of a shooter. Outside of that one hard foul on Lacey, their players seem to play much sounder defense and simply haven’t made as many dumb fouls as our guys. Hate seeing this year in and year out with Gott’s teams.
packalum44ParticipantDefensive coordinator is so far down the list of our problems its barely worthy of discussion. 1- talent 2- talent 3- talent. 4- DD ??????
I can’t help myself, but I do wonder if the folks beating their chest after the Fl State game now feel silly. DD has HUGE questions marks as he’s taken poor talent and seemingly made them poorer. The mark of a great poker player is taking a bad hand and playing it well. DD would be an awful poker player. This isn’t poker though…hard to tell.
I never formed a decisive opinion but will still believe he will be a solid coach. My conviction level fluctuates between 50-60% this past year. Our defense is so so bad it couldn’t stop a high school team. Our offense has no O-Line, NFL caliber receivers, backs or tight-ends. There is a lot of volatility in the stock market lately if you buy or sell after a bad/good day you’re a fool.
Speaking of Def. Coordinators, our last one had a great reputation and took NFL caliber secondary and somehow made them look like a middle school team. Amerson, Wolff, Johnson, Bishop. That is sickening how bad TOB’s staff performed in recruiting and coaching.
packalum44ParticipantThat was a pretty good USF team we played. Better than what Vegas thought at +15/16 points.
But we also underperformed, although only slightly. It will be a frustrating ride with Gott…we know from experience that he’s never going to out-coach the Tier 1 coaches and he’s never going to optimize our talent. He’s a poor man’s Calipari/Roy where he wants to have the best talent. Not happening here but he’s the best we had since V.
Anyways my prognostication puts this at a 15-25 ranked team by year-end. We have a grade A back-court with serviceable big men and a defensive gem in Anya (though despite his wingpsan he may get served by Tier 1 centers).
A gutless team is what we learned Gott can field but by virtue of normally distributed outcomes we could still get lucky and make a run in the dance.
packalum44ParticipantIt pains me to watch the gutless teams that Gott fields. Teams that have guts down the stretch (i.e., hit free throws), are at least in part, an extension of the coach.
The body language of Dez, Cat and Lacy was: “don’t miss this”.
Some players are clutch enough to hit shots even without the effect of a special coach, but apparently not those 3. I feel like the Martin twins might turn out to be the toughest guys we’ve had in the program in a while….which now I think of it, Marcus Melvin is the last name to come to mind that…he always seemed to play better in clutch moments. Atsur a little bit too.
packalum44ParticipantIt seems obvious to many folks that the bigs were not offensively impressive. What hasn’t been mentioned is the opponent’s game plan. Crash all five guys inside any time the ball enters the paint….make them beat us with an outside shot. I think this fact mitigates some concerns. We will see less of this type of defense – basically a ‘we have nothing to lose’ desperate strategy – when we play ACC teams who have bigs who can guard our bigs one-on-one.
But low and behold, we actually have 4-5 guys that can hit from behind the arc on this team.
Cat’s stroke looks really good when he’s wide open…he has to be guarded tighter which opens up drives. Lacey can actually shoot a 3 off the bounce…something we haven’t had since I can recall. The twins can hit 3s and have a smooth shot. The bigs – Lenard and Kyle – have improved jumpers. Turner hit a few 2 point jumpers off the bounce – an improvement – and has to be respected behind the arc.
When Dez Lee, who would have started on 25 of NC State’s past 30 teams, is the 9th or 10th guy off the bench….Hodge’s twitter hype about depth is actually true for once.
We still aren’t elite but I saw a top 25 team play.
packalum44ParticipantThis is the most talented NC State team since the 80s. No way they don’t make the dance. If the refs let us we might even beat a blue or two this year.

You can’t teach a 90 IQ kid college material. they would simply fail out.
The cheating is primarily bad as it enriches cheating schools at the expense of the others.
packalum44ParticipantAwful awful awful play calling and bad decisions on the QB too. Our pass protection is atrocious as well.
Brissett gets nervous and scrambles before the pocket breaks down. This is a trend I haven’t seen improved all season.
packalum44ParticipantHave to go for it. Idiotic to think Louisville won’t score again.
packalum44ParticipantWow awful decision and even worse play calling. 1st and goal on 1? Have 4 downs to run it in.
This is when Marc Trestman QB sneak would have worked.
packalum44ParticipantOne thing that frustrates me about DD is his choice to be aggressive only SOME of the time. If you go for it on 4th down in kicking range, then you do it the whole game. The logic is grounded in statistics.
Think of it this way, you have dealer odds of 51% in blackjack. He knows he may lose a few hands by chance early but over time he’ll win. Going for touchdowns is worth it over time. If you go for it and miss, then you have even more reason to go for it all game to make up for it.
10/08/2014 at 10:04 AM in reply to: The Wolfpack Is At A Fork In The Road…Which Way Will They Go? #58339packalum44ParticipantUnlikely there is a fork per se. We will win a few and lose a few. Crappy bowl game will be in the cards. Progress I suppose, but our real issue is a large talent gap between us and Clemson/Florida State.
Let’s hope that DD’s 3 star recruits are better than the 3 star recruits O’Brien brought in. DD has not brought in top 20 recruiting classes that UNC has done with surprising consistency post-Bunting years.
packalum44ParticipantIt seems human nature is geared to vindicate original assessments as opposed to applying Bayesian logic – i.e., use new information to continually update opinions.
I went from Good Hire – to Questionable Hire – to Even More Questionable Hire – to Maybe a Good Hire.
Hindsight Bias abounds on this thread.
I think Matt Canada has shown tremendous and consistent ability in his play calling. Even last year I was optimistic about the offensive play calling but the execution just wasn’t there (no QB).
DD still has question marks and is far from certain the next Mack Brown. Time will tell, but one thing is certain, I will update my thinking based on new information.
Our defense is incredibly atrocious though in large part due to a lack of talent. I think if DD continues to recruit well (this class is blah on paper) and trends upwards, the sky is the limit for a good coach. I hope he is a significantly better than average coach b/c we are nowhere near close to having Clemson or Fl State talent. We will have to out-scheme and out-coach the 2 best coaching staffs int he ACC.
packalum44ParticipantI’m happy that we are 4-0 but am keeping expectations tempered. We are very close to being 2-2. Fortunately we are not. You have to win the cupcakes in year 2 – just too hard to keep selling recruits when you lose those games.
Perhaps more noteworthy this season is Fedora being exposed. I appreciate the comparison to Amato. Hopefully we now have a coach who can capitalize on our largest competitor’s failures as opposed to being out-recruited even while they were hindered by one of the largest NCAA scandals in history.
packalum44ParticipantI wouldn’t mind burning Jalens redshirt in the 3rd quarter for this. Prep him to backup for 2 and play 2 years after Jacoby.
Our walk on backup this year is Daniel Evans junior. What if Jacoby goes down a couple weeks and we lose to Wake and others and miss a bowl?
Could be the butterfly effect no need to chance it. Keep the program building momentum this ‘game’ is about recruiting and reloading and selling. This isn’t BC where it’s about values and redshirting is virtuous.
