“…cementing the Carter-Finley Stadium Complex as one of the finest football facilities in the nation.”

I hope not many actually take this declaration at face value and repeat it. Top 30 perhaps sure…

2 teams play the exact same schedule. They have the exact same record. They have the exact same RPI.

Team 1 wins its game by an average margin of 10 versus an average margin of 5 for Team 2. Team 1 loses by an average margin of 5 versus 9.

The net average margin is 5 for Team 1 and 1 for Team 2.

Add in standard deviation of average margin to further adjust ranking. Consistency counts. Make your own RPI adjusted for net margin and volatility.

If we had a coach with talent commensurate to our stated goals we would all be spared the agony of this annual bubble blabber ritual.

My only ‘hope’ this March is that Archie isn’t lured away from Dayton.

Ruminating about which play cost which game is missing the forest for the trees.

Once you have the right coach in place, then you can agonize over the trees.

Yawwnnnn. Same story, different coach, different year, more grey hair, comfortably numb.

Thanks goodness more folks are coming around. Though the big donors call the shots, populist opinion DOES have sway in AD office’s around the country.

Mark is crashing and burning right before our eyes just like he did at Alabama. Erie really, but the skepticism most of us had immediately following this WTF hire, which was briefly pacified by 3 bubble dance invitations, is coming to fruition. I admit I was optimistic but I’ve seen enough there is no need to look back and dwell on our moot opinions and bog ourselves down in the emotions of the past.

Labels of “good” and “bad” are too vague to be of any use debating. It would make more sense to say, for example, that Mark isn’t one of the top 25 coaches out there. He’s likely not top 50…maybe just outside. But at that point there’s really little difference.

Bottom line: his teams underachieve based on the given talent levels. His recruiting, when adjusted for retention, is certainly nowhere near good enough to overcome his coaching deficiencies. Since the kids can now view G’s track record, the top 10 classes are a thing of the past.

Being an AD is like being a CEO. You don’t have to be an expert at what the company does. Plenty of CEOs switch industries and succeed. What you have to be an expert at is judging and managing people.

Kaboommmmm. No its even worse. Mediocrity abounds. More like a pathetic whimper that the adults hear but don’t pay any attention. We are a very poor institution with little walking around money….in the bottom quin-tile of BCS schools and maybe worse. Unlikely G is canned until next year or God help us the year after. This program continues to be mired in a complete and holistic cloak of irrelevance. But keep smiling ye’ faithful the sun rises tomorrow and HOPE soothes the sorrow of the wretched.

Can’t read a football post without seeing a comment chiding those who expressed doubt of DD. He had a horrible first year and a great second year. It’s a push so far. tho opinions vary he seems to have improved the team and recruits well for our standards. As of today I believe he will be pretty good coach tho only a fool would make an early assessment and stick to it – blind to any new information. We should all reevaluate any opinions formed based on new information so as to mitigate emotional and cognitive biases inherent in most humans.

Many folks formed an early opinion that Gott was good tho there is no persuasive objective reason to think he can win championships here. We should move on tho it takes many biases folks years to come around.

Not sure what is worse: this loss or the fact it took this loss to open some eyes. This season is no different than the past 3. Different players, similar outcomes.

We’re likely stuck with G for another year due to $ constraints and we’ll lose Archie to a top 20 program. He’s not under the radar anymore.

Question: What is NC State’s goal?

Answer: To win another national title.

Question: Who thinks Gott will ever win a Championship?

    Answer: Not a sane soul.

    Question: WTF?

    Answer: NC State.

Question: Why do UNC alumni think we’re losers?

    Answer: Because we are.

It is almost cruel to kill yourself pontificating on which plays lost this and that game. You could make a career out of highlighting Gott’s mind numbing in-game decisions. Why bother?

You miss the forest for the trees. This program loses the games on the 364 days of the year other than whichever game we ruminate over. Let’s move on.

Big surprise. Good enough to be up 18 points and we blow it. Anyone read my Q&A from last game?

Good news…reasonable minds (DY) have seen enough to realize G is charred meat. Bad news…its expensive for one of the poorest schools in the NCAA to fire a coach with 3 years left on his contract. I.E., cross your fingers we can hold out for Archie till next year (doubtful).

Where do we come from? Where are we? Where do we want to be?

Spintk if it makes you feel any better no one really likes me either most of my opinions shared are contrarian or else why share them if they aren’t interesting? You can’t change deeply engrained minds – just share your thoughts and move on. Its nothing if not cathartic. I feel like I just rubbed one out with my post I can sleep now. Goodnight all.

Does Debbie Yow still think Gottfried is the answer for our program? I think not.

    Q&A

Q: But wait why the knee jerk reaction you lunatic we were underdogs??!
A: You do realize we were underdogs to a significantly inferior team due to them having a great coach and us having an average coach? Also I’ve been preaching anti-Gott sermons since year 2 best I can remember.

Q: Why do other teams lose to Miami? Duke lost!
A: By definition, most teams have average coaches (tho w/ less talent than State) – so that’s why. Duke lost one bad game (2 counting us) we lose games against inferior talent consistently.

Q: How can you have such conviction we have one of the most talented teams in the ACC?
A: What other teams have TWO 5* and SIX 4* recruits? Not to mention an athletic and talented guard who never plays. Plus the eye test…our guys are athletic if not somewhat raw (hence why a good coach is vital).

Q: Why don’t our teams give 40 minutes of effort we show so much promise at times?
A: We show promise b/c we are more talented than most teams we play. Though every team has spurts, our spurts have put us up 15-20 points on really good team over the past few years (St Louis anyone?). However we don’t play consistent b/c we are not taught proper habits in practice. We “think” too much during games b/c our practice hasn’t taught us techniques and skill that should be second nature. Read the Power of Habit there is a terrific section on Tony Dungy.

Q: ^ Well that should be easy to fix.
A: Absolutely not it takes a special person to turn a basketball paradigm into a second nature habit for humans. Also knowing what works and doesn’t work for each group and having depth of knowledge to different strategies would help.

Q: Our players don’t play hard enough on defense.
A: Defense isn’t only about playing hard its about being fundamentally sound which is taught in practice. Those dumb fouls we make on rebounders after missing shots should be nixed in practice. So painful, yet they are bad habits never rectified.

Q: Why do we not play to our strength – athleticism and depth – and full court press the entire game?
A: Not Gott’s forte he doesn’t have the skill to teach this in practice. It is not easy. He only knows what he knows which is offense. He knows offense he’s not so great at teaching it to kids in an efficient manner.

Q: Wait I thought Gott was know for offense – Why is our offense painful to watch in the half court?
A: Gott is our coach. Knowing offense and teaching it to 90-110 IQs are two different things.

Q: Doesn’t he just need more time?
A: Yes. About 30 years. We might reach an elite 8. More likely not. Next year might be our highest ceiling year – maybe the year after if Martin twins keep improving. Mark’s recruiting is fading just look at next year’s goose egg.

    Q: He’s better than Herb!
    A: That wasn’t a question.

None of Miami’s players would crack our starting line up. Their PG would backup Cat to be the only one to get any playing time.

I can’t remember the last time an NC State team was as woefully untalented as this Miami team. How the heell Jim never landed a top job is beyond me. I’d trade him right now for G.

Who knows that Wofford loss could impact RPI just enough to put us on the wrong side of the bubble. As it appears now I don’t think we’ll have to worry about any bubble this year which could be for the best if it gets Archie here faster.

Gott’s teams consistently underachieve based on each team’s talent level. Jim L and Tony B teams consistently overachieve based on talent levels. Moreover there does not seem to be any strategic synergies in Gott’s paradigm. He simply tries to recruit talented folks and have them run a relatively complex offense. Execution is not there…that’s his excuse. They are too young etc… I buy that its a great system if executed properly but that’s the rub…he can’t teach it effectively to college teams with churn. Moreover he doesn’t have mitigating talents to bring into the mix.

Defense is not corrected by hiring an assistant coach…defensive teams spend hours in practice…ya know…practicing defense – until it becomes second nature…or HABIT. Gott’s teams spend the vast majority of time practicing offense. Sure they’ll play harder some games and show glimpses but…don’t fool yourself.

There is little reason – other than catharsis – to critique the details when the forest is in plain view…for those who are able to see it.

P.S. – Anyone read “The Power of Habit”? Tony Dungy’s paradigm is explained in detail.

Wide receiver coaches are essentially recruiters. We need all the help recruiting we can get. Nothing has to be ‘wrong’ to upgrade at any given position.

Perfectly acceptable diss though what frustrates me is using a single game to overgeneralize. Most laymen have no concept of normal distribution (or non-normal but not to split hairs). Results in life have expected outcomes (in this case the spread of +7 points), but a wide range of perfectly ‘normal’ outcomes.

Oregon played a perfect game and FSU played poorly. Let them play 7 times and I bet the ranch FSU wins at least once and perhaps 2 or 3 times.

TCU versus Oregon is the game we should have seen but never will.

    Consistency.

Nc state is quite a consisent program. Just cute enough to attract decent talent. Unlucky and inept enough to whiff on coaching. Stuck in mediocrity.

Gott in his fourth year is the same Gott in first year. We’ve got him for at least two more just spare yourself the misery and don’t watch. A lot of folks are getting it the attendance has been atrocious this year.

If DD can have at least one break-out season, ala Louisville or GA Tech, I believe we can reach a tipping point where the majority of top talent stick around. If Amato wasn’t such an awful coach and had better inroads in NC (as opposed to sloppy seconds in Florida) he could have got us there.

The talent in NC is deep and only trails, FL, GA, Texas and CA…all of which have a higher population. Keep in mind athletic talent is normally distributed trait – at least among certain demographics. We have the proper demographics to be a perennial top 25 team if we just keep the damn guys home.

I want some of the stuff ^ are taking. Polly Anne is waving her magic wand tonight. This team is awful down the stretch this is the first loss but not the first TIME we did everything in our power to lose a game. Y’all did watch the last couple games I take it. Go watch a Jim L team look so gutless down the stretch…nothing to do with talent everything to do with intangibles a coach instills in his players not to mention having a “feel” for coaching and calling certain plays or strategies down the stretch.

Have a hunch, bet a bunch. Did anyone mention that his hunches misfire more times than not.

I just hate the GUTLESS play and missed FTs down the stretch more than anything. We get nervous like we have no swag no confidence. That is a 4 year trend in the GOtt era.

Admittedly it takes a special coach to instill that kind of mentality, but jesus its depressing.
