Pack85EEParticipant
Great article, Great information. The home/home comparison really is simple yet accurate. The only factor that it does not pick up on is for the one time only opponents, who did you play on the road and who did you play at home.
Thanks for analysis of the road games as well.
Pack85EEParticipant13OT you are my antithesis. If I’m the eternal optimist, you are the eternal pessimist.
I can’t believe you think our basketball program with two straight NCAA appearances and high rated recruiting classes each year for coach Gott, is going backwards.
And you are rating the football team on one year but not looking at the recruits this guy is bringing in.These times are not that dark and there is light on the horizon. But then, I’m your antithesis.
Pack85EEParticipantTEXpack, It some how slipped my mind that we went from our last ACC Football championship to our worst football years almost overnight. Fall of 81 was Monty Kiffins last year and then we had three years of Tom Reed. How did we fall so far so fast? Did Kiffin just not recruit at all?
Kiffin, Reed, and Les Robinson just show how one bad coach can set a team back terribly, more than I had realized.
Pack85EEParticipantClass of 85 – Football sucked for about 5 years and that at least led us to Sheridan.
But I will always have that magical 1982-1983 basketball season which made me the eternal optimist I am. It ain’t over until the last whistle has blown.Pack85EEParticipantThis is just one big negative Blog. So right now we are about 1 position above where we were predicted to be and we have fired the coach, or at least determined that he will never get us where we need to go. Our young guys are not getting it done but I still think the program is trending upward with the quality of players coming in each year. I just hope you don’t get the coach fired before he gets the program rolling.
Yea, Duke should have fired their coach when Jimmy V built State up in a few years while Duke seemed to be trudging along. I’m sure they would have found someone a lot better.
Pack85EEParticipantSO last time, we let them blow out to a big lead and then played even the rest of the way. Of course, any team with a double digit lead does not have to play all out. But we could win this thing. Here are my wishful thinking but not impossible keys to the game.
1. 3 point and free throw shooting percentages need to be better. Hitting a few early 3’s would be a great start.
2. Stay out of foul trouble. It would be great if we get a squad that calls it loose. A squad like what we had in Winston-Salem while playing UNC and we’ll be playing the small line up and using walk-ons.
3. Avoid those dangerous back court turnovers
4. Defensive rebounding.Items 1 and 3 above apply most to our 1 -2 positions which I think is where we are not quite as strong as we had hoped to be this year. We need all 4 of those guys to bring it tonight.
We need another good night from Washington too. Maybe a forth guy to get to double digit scoring, Warren, Turner, Washington and ???Pack85EEParticipantChanging subjects back to the future games – boy we really need a new thread to start – A am afraid we are going to get trounced tomorrow night. I sure hope I’m wrong. Maybe UNX is due for a fall back to earth.
If we beat Pitt, we are 10-8. Does a Friday win get us over the hump, maybe not.
So we get the 7th seed and knock of Syracuse, then somehow knock off Duke on Saturday because they aren’t all everything this year. Only problem is they will bother us more than we will bother them. I think that’s a big issue with our team this year. Other strong teams get in our head with tough D and fast breaks. Us, not so much.
But if we are on a roll and make it to Sunday, could we win?Pack85EEParticipantNumbers is Bull$#!t
Pack85EEParticipantJigawatts, I appreciate your number crunching. Thanks for all you do. But I do say those two showed strong improvement at least by the eye-test. Buckets was awesome last year, scoring easily when defenses keyed on Brown, Lesley, Scott and trying to block Howell out. But this year, when defenses are keying on him he is bringing as well as anyone in conference.
And I would say that Lewis has developed/improved his leadership game management skills but boy does his shot need work.I did open by saying I was the eternal optimist so …
I do think Gottfried has this team on the right path. Next year could be as tough as this year though.Pack85EEParticipantI see a few folks are still writing to this thread so I thought I would throw my eternally optimistic 2 cents in.
It was mentioned that next year we are counting on freshman to sophomore improvement the likes of which we have not seen before. Sure that it will never happen. My answer- two names Warren and Lewis.
Freeman not done much lately? Are you seeing his rebound per minutes #. Very good for a freshman.
Dez and Turner, well, OK Turner started in a slump and is streaky. Dez needs to play under control. This would be a place to get Cat more time but all three need to bring out their best. Right Now, else we have more than one loss coming up.
Pack85EEParticipantBut see, all this talk of 3 needed but not likely wins ignores the upward trending saw tooth action that statistics blatantly show us climbing up to about 40 in RPI by the end this upcoming win streak.
You see, in this case, Numbers isn’t bull$#!+ (but I could be).
At least until Feb 27th and then I need a new plan.
Pack85EEParticipantVWolf, yea, I was thinking of who we could possible beat on Friday. Agree any of the top 4 would be the great win we need. And were just dreaming anyway. Like maybe VA will knock Cuse back to 2 and we finish 7th. But it’s all a crap shoot I just hope we are ready for Va Tech.
Pack85EEParticipantBJD you are correct. More teams would be more teams like us that may get hot a game or two but just as likely may not show up and provide the fans any kind of decent game. Could you imagine a game like our showing against Clemson. Only the winning team’s fans could enjoy that. The rest to the USA – pass, no interest at all.
Pack85EEParticipantWhat if we go 5-0 and then pee down our leg? Do we have a chance?
Pack85EEParticipantBut not guaranteed.
Pack85EEParticipantI think 4-1 and 2-1 in ACCT would be. Difference would be two good wins, not one added to our resume.
So for consideration, who would we rather play on Friday.
I’m thinking Cuse but they may be out to kick our butt.Pack85EEParticipantThe heck with the schedule. I’m going with the upward trending, 1 week, 2 week alternating saw tooth pattern.
Fall down one week, climb higher than we were before, fall down two weeks, climb higher than we were before, down one week, climb higher, down two weeks climb higher.
No doubt we now climb this week which can only mean one thing VICTORY!!!Yea, that’s how I see it.
02/19/2014 at 3:54 PM in reply to: Inconsistent Wolfpack Falls Flat In Littlejohn: Clemson 73 – NC State 56 #41783Pack85EEParticipantI would not say Painter transferred for playing time. Unless he used his family’s health as an excuse and I would not put that on him. But Purvis did. For PG PT.
We do have a solid 2 guard waiting in the wings, and Dez should be a bit better next year. But I’m not sure how much WSW (the real deal) would have helped us. His game was an issue last year when he couldn’t get open. What we need are multiple 3 point threats. Warren seems to have improved his 3 lately. We have turner. We need Cat, Tyler and Dez to all get better (Now, for this late run!). And maybe next year Washington can extend his range. You need at least 3 guys that are real threat from 3.
Pack85EEParticipantBut it just seems like 6 of 1, 1/2 doz of the other. At least we don’t have the Les Robinson invitational to get invited to every year.
Pack85EEParticipantPPF’s plan is best for the 8-5 spot. Not wore out vs the top 4 (in days played).
VW’s plan also gives the lesser teams a bit of a break but not as much (4 days straight, vs 3 games in 4 days).
You could also take the current format and let the upper ranked team play at home Monday and Wed for the Wed Thursday games. Home team fans will fill the seats better than anything going. Then start the 8 team 3 day tourney with all fresh legs on Friday.
But the ACC does not care about fairness to the lesser teams.02/19/2014 at 12:12 PM in reply to: Inconsistent Wolfpack Falls Flat In Littlejohn: Clemson 73 – NC State 56 #41765Pack85EEParticipantMaryland won a National Championship and I don’t know how many times I have heard announcers in the last two weeks talk about how the Duke/Maryland rivalry was one of the best in NCAA Basketball.
They did decline some. It’s a hard business.
02/19/2014 at 12:08 PM in reply to: Inconsistent Wolfpack Falls Flat In Littlejohn: Clemson 73 – NC State 56 #41764Pack85EEParticipantVaWolf, do you mean Gary William did a good job or didn’t?
02/19/2014 at 12:05 PM in reply to: Inconsistent Wolfpack Falls Flat In Littlejohn: Clemson 73 – NC State 56 #41763Pack85EEParticipantSeaWolf thanks for that. I heard the Anthony got slammed with negative tweets after the Cuse game. If I didn’t read this site I would say it was UNC fans trying to wear him out. But I know what kind of poor mouthing comes up on this site.
This team is on the right track and Gott is building the program back. Anya in his 4th year will be stronger that V is. Washington looks to be very good by next year. Tyler has improved, Cat has stumbled but the talent is there. This is a patch work team of young guys, transfers a superstar and a 5th year. We talked at the beginning of they year of likely hood of making it and this team is actually in better shape than the prognosticators predicted. A couple of breaks and we would be solidly in.
Yea, we now need to win 5 in a row – not likely, or win 4 of 5 and win Thur and Fri (against a very good team) not likely just to get to the up side of the bubble. I’ll be pulling for us to the bitter end but yes, the fat lady is warming up and doing vocal exercises as we speak. And there is always the ACC Tourney. One day a team will win playing 4 games.Pack85EEParticipant13OT Do you really think NYC will better support viewing the bottom 6 teams.
I think it will be the fans of those teams that will be the main attendees. I think it’s the opposite. I live in Greensboro and I am the type that would walk up to see NCSU on Wednesday or Thursday. Fans buying book tickets are those that want to see the top teams, but the GA format lets fans of the bottom team attend with out forking out big bucks for the whole weekend. So I go see NCSU on Thursday and if we win, I pick up a side of the road ticket for Friday and if we win…..But, who knows, it’s all about TV money isn’t it?
Pack85EEParticipantThe format is about the best it could be for a 15 team conf. The bottom six get a chance at a Tourney win or two. The middle teams, who might be on the bubble, get an easier game and then one that means something for the all important top 50 or top 25 win list.
The question is often pondered, is it an advantage on Friday to have played one warm up game, or is the advantage to the fresh team. We know some teams start their first game cold.
One thing is clear, when it comes to a 3rd game against a 2nd, or a 4th game against a 3rd, the fresher team has a definite advantage. -
