GoWolves – I’m late to get back here but if you read this, my estimate of 25 is probably high, but I was not referring to the # of guys coming out each year, but the number of guys playing and starting at QB in college on any given year that will at least make an NFL team. But the key point that you and I agree on, we had 5 rare years of the very top quality QB. Without Russel and Glennon I don’t think we would have made a bowl. Below mediocrity. Here’s to hoping we are getting better and deeper at every position.

How many college teams have future NFL QBs starting for them each year, maybe 25 max? When we think of what the Wolfpack did with 5 straight years with a future NFL QB, you really have to question what Tom did for the program. I guess he had a few stars but overall average capability at each position. Dave D. does seem like he is recruiting quality guys everywhere. But, time will tell. A lot of last year was definitely the drop off at QB. That position in itself, if he stays healthy will improve the team.

Wow Va Wolf, could you be more negative? We only play 1 real team in first 4 games so worst case is 3-1 unless you think we will be a weaker team than last year. Who do you have us losing to, Ga. Southern? I love the players this coach is bringing in and I think the program is on the right track. No changes are needed in coaching staff or AD. If we win 7 or 8 I won’t be surprised. If we only win 5 I will be disappointed but will hold blame from the coach unless there is an obvious flaw.

Another Possibility which no one mentions is just making the divisions fluid. Why do they need to stay consistent year in and out? You can keep the 8 team schedule. Make the rules that you will play every other team in conference at least every third year. Load the divisions based on conference records. Even if you have to makes schedules two years out, it should still keep things interesting. The fans will have the “fun” of trying to figure out which division they are in and who else is in it but hell, we do that anyway.

Each team can keep two teams they want to play every year and preferences for other old rivalries. That way, when Wake or UNX end up in our division, we could pick up a team outside our division that we want to play more (Duke, other old ACC teams). It might seem crazy but I think it would be better than what we have. Maybe there would be a weighting factor so that if your preferences are bottom dwellers, one or two would kick out and you get an opponent that evens up your strength of schedule.
It would add to off season excitement just waiting to find out your division make up for the coming seasons.

The ACC brain trust would have a challenging time building the schedules but it’s just a basic Operations Research problem.

For the most part we are all on the same wavelength. Rick down a standard deviation and BJD up one where I tend to hang out. We expect the truth will be somewhere between and pray we don’t go south a couple deviations – like what happened to Notre Dame this year.

A few things that need to happen and all of which would send us higher than expected: Cat getting it done, Anya losing weight and becoming a monster inside (and Abu a solid back up), the Martins being big contributors, Turner able to knock down threes with ease (3+ a game to take his average to 13 ppg (my prediction)). And Lacey also averaging 14+

    Pack85EE
    Participant

Yes, but without Warren, do we score more points per game?
It’s possible, but it will take CAT and Turner to increase their scoring (likely) and Trevor to average in double figures (likely). Washington and Freemon to score a little more (likely) Abu and Anya to score more than Anya and Vandy (very likely)
My worry is for someone to feed the bigs in good scoring position (likely Cat will be better, and the bigs hands will be better)

And I worry that I am too optimistic for next year (likely? – guaranteed)

I would settle for winning a PG recruit at this point.

OK, that link I’m going to shows Chase Cannon as having a scholarship and I thought I read that coach awarded him one. Maybe that is wrong.

    Sr Dez and Ralston
    Jr Trevor and Chase
So Cat, Lenard, Anya and Washington
FR Martin, Martin and Abu = 11, New PG =12, leaves one open.
incoming 2015 = 3, 1 open plus Dez and Ralston.

Hopefully we get him. I see recent recruiting activity
http://verbalcommits.com/schools/nc-state that we have offered a 3 star PG
JaQuell Richmond. That’s surprising while Devonte has just become available.
Maybe it’s to make Devonte move quicker, (first come first served)

With 13 Scholarships I like the idea of recruiting 4 every year. With transfers and early exits it will be rare when there won’t be 4 spots available, unless backfilling with transfers has occurred. That said if we pick up a point guard for 2014, I only see 3 slots available for the following year. One open spot now and the spots vacated by Dez and Ralston.
Trevor and Chase would be our seniors. So the following year would appear real light, (only – transfers happen).

    So looking at the links,
These 5 were listed in top 25
    Duke, UNC, VA, Syracuse, Louisville
These 3 also predicted in the Tourney.
    Pitt, Clemson, FSU

Things can change a bit before November so I think I can move on to football now.

Yea, we get Graham and the last 3 recruiting classes final result might be each one better than the one before. It’s hard to rate a class until they are done but the first class had one bonafide NBA player and two disgruntled guards. We’ll see how great those two become. ehh!
I actually think the current freshman class might be the best of the lot, depending how strong the big men get.
But to add a strong guard to the incoming class makes it look as good as the previous two.
Yea, when I raise a red flag, it has a wolf and white letters on it.

I see no limit to the potential of the Wolfpack under Gott yet.
He’s recruiting well and that’s the key. As he brings in his guys and builds teams with multiple years of his guys we should be better than the last 3 years. And as we get better and build a reputation, recruiting gets easier.
I still look back to the slow growth of the Coach K Duke program. V got out of the gates quicker while Coach K slowly built up Duke. They were in the middle (of 8) when K got there.
Continuing, If Gott continues to recruit and builds on his success, slowly improving recruiting, he has another upward jump in his success coming. When K, Roy, Boeheim retire, the more established programs/coaching staff take some of their recruiting territory. I know all three programs will hire top level coaches, but a more established competitor will do well against them. A program with another replaced coach gains no ground. The Pack needs to have a top level reputation when that happens.

Not sure we need another guard yet. With past discussion of Gott using a smaller bench, whether it is a pattern or symptom who knows, would an 11th player just be disgruntled. He needs a great PG and SG to come in the following year when Cat is a Jr and Lacey is a Sr.
I would take DEVONTE GRAHAM, but does he realize he is going to be a back up for several years and may never be a full ACC caliber starter.

Also about the 83 team, they were beating UVA when Whit got hurt. Most of the losses were while Whit was on the bench. But that allowed Ernie, Gannon and others to develop. It all came together.

So, since Purvis is close to Championships, that means we win one during the next two years when he would have been here, right?

Jiga, I didn’t say I disagreed with you. But you yourself say the personnel has better at NCSU than at Bama. That feeds into my point that as the quality of players improve, chances are both curves go up. If his talent at Bama was less that what we have had, he did pretty damn good. Maybe I’m wrong but I think all would agree that our players the last 3 years have not equaled Final Four quality, or even Duke and UNC quality. But they are good and getting better.
If he can get to the point year after year where he has players = to the boys in blue, logic says defense and offense will be better. But as good as FF teams?, that remains to be seen.

And I do agree with you that your chart clearly shows he develops better offenses than defenses. Would love to see a move (Staff change?) to change that.

Good article Jigs And other input such as Tau837 above provide thoughts on the why and the future. As to your conclusion in the follow on discussion

“The conclusion is as long as Gottfried continues to produce defensive results that he has always produced then short of a miracle we have already seen what he will continue to provide. Is everyone happy with a ceiling of making it to the Sweet 16, maybe Elite Eight? Because even the Cinderella teams are better defensively than Gottfried’s teams have been.”

it sounds like a lawyer proving his point but may neglect some pieces of logic. If Gott improves his player personnel, do both lines track upward, offense moves well into FF quality and defense moves up into the low end for FF quality? I hope so. I guess a few more years will tell us, not next but the year after and from then on, I would hope to see both curves higher. But data does show where the focus is, and where it needs to increase.

*I find it terribly offensive that we should be labeled based on some sportscaster calling us a pack of wolves. Instead we should be the Cotton Tails because a rabbit never hurt anyone and we should wear pink which would look good when we play that powder puff blue school. Oh, I hope you don’t think pink represents the Caucasian race and excludes the rest of the world.

As to transfers, they are becoming much more common. And as someone referenced he knew of no similar school with so many transfers, be sure to compare us with a team who has a 3rd year coach. Change in coaching regimes cause transfers. Lewis was a Lowe recruit. I love him and we will miss him, but we will be fine without him. Gott once said that sometimes the recruit you take hurts you more than the recruit you missed. This reference was to bringing in someone who takes up one of your 13 scholarships but does not contribute. I’m not saying Lewis was not worth the scholarship but this point explains the value of bringing in a transfer, a player of good caliber that will provide immediate help but not keep a slot 4 years when you may be able to get a much higher caliber recruit, and it explains the value of someone transferring out. If they are not going to be a great contributer, example Raymond and DeThaey, let them go and bring in those 4 and 5 stars. In this day with volatile personnel, transfers are a great way to manage class size until you get a much more stable (Coach in program 1/2 doz years or more) program. And even then, if you are getting the great recruits, you will lose them to the draft and transfers may be needed.

John Miller was a legendary Western Pennsylvania high school coach who won more than 600 games and four state titles at Beaver Falls Blackhawk High.

Answered my own question. Probably heard this before but forgot, getting old.

Packalum44, if you are calling Gott a rich man’s Sendek and wanting Archie Miller I think you are nuts. I want nothing to do with anything Sendek and that includes Archie Miller. I loved the kid when he played but if his game is anything like Sendeks (maybe it’s not and I’m full of it) I don’t want it. 10 years of watching paint dry was enough. Give me Gott’s up tempo. And I love his recruits. And if you don’t think he did a great job with this year’s team, I guess we just don’t see the court the same.

“The “Stop CUZ” game plan is so (pick any word you like )… because it takes so much to do it… To stop the PACK… just let CUZ get his twenty and stop everybody else.”

I thought the “Stop CUZ” game was 20. Focus on everybody else and defend CUZ 1 on 1, he’ll get 40.
