Pack1998Participant
In reality Gott has been very successful. Our most successful hire. But the inconsistency last year and this is bad. Unfortunate.
Best call u can make is Greg, then Archie next, then just keep Gott and force him to have a great vet assistant.
Pack1998ParticipantThis post is terrible. Sendek was the worst coach in the HISTORY of the ACC over a 10 yr period. No coach in the history of the ACC has kept his job for as long as he did w such a poor record. If u think I am wrong put ur math hat on and look at the data. Most coaches get fired mich sooner for being so bad.
Gott inherited a team last in the ACC and not one player is in the NBA.
This year is worthy of offering Greg at Witchita a nice salary at NC State, BUT never! Ever! Compare Gott to Herb. Our worst mistake was hiring Herb over Cal back then (thanks Todd turner). Then messed it up again (thanks lee!). After 5 years and lots of patience anyone w the facilities and resources of State will eventually do well. my concern is Gott has lost his focus. Too bad so sad. Others want this job. Move on.
Pack1998ParticipantHe should stay. The NBA is so exact in its skills assessment, I just don’t think his pure scoring ability will be enough to warrant first round. He is maybe late second round which has no promise of contract.
He is ultra quick, but not a vertical leaper like some other guys his size. His assist total is low, which may be a function of this team but even last year he was not a pass pure guy. He is not an ace from 3 either. He would benefit getting his final year, and showing these things. He would likely spend next year in the D league, which is better than most, and he certainly can make a roster long term, but if he leads a top 25 team at State next year he could move up to Rd 1 and promised money. NBA draft is entirely different movie than it was even 5 years ago.
Pack1998ParticipantOur defense was not going to be good in year 3 of DD’s reign, so we needed the offense to be good. The 2 games that would have flipped the season were Va Tech and Louisville, and we score 13 in each game. Also, the data for average pts scored has our first 4 cupcake games in it, including the 60+ game vs S Alabama.
Regarding Cananda’s departure – I understand why it happened. Lots of inconsistencies in the offense, the strategy was crazy. Sometimes it was awesome (highlighted vs UNC in 2014, plus Clemson and FSU games at home) and others it was terrible (miss st, Louisville, Va Tech and various in 2013 and 2014).
Geez, just thinking of the Miss St game, with a month to prep. First play from scrimmage was a disaster. 2 turnovers early and missing a 4th and 1 without asking to even get a measurement. We learn McIver is a faster Gronk (what?). JaySam gets minimal touches. We never county their defensive rush with short drop backs or going under center w tight per spreads . . . If I was DD I would be going nuts. If u argue the OC data my argument is that it could have even been better.
Pack1998ParticipantJacoby is fine
This is the same situations as last year – Canada sux, then DD jerks his chain – then we start sustained drives w TDs – Canada is terrible
Dayes and Samuel were great
Pack1998ParticipantI still blame it on offensive play calling
Canada really f-ing can’t call a game – awful!!!!
Some solid talent on this team
02/25/2015 at 7:16 AM in reply to: State wins in Chapel Hill! Has Dean Smith’s pact with the devil expired? #75839Pack1998ParticipantWith regards to this entry, we all hold Dean in high regard. He was loyal and true to his players, coaches and university. He was a ruthless competitor against his rivals.
Focusing on the win, we did show class. Go Pack. Great work by Gott and staff.
Pack1998ParticipantI would say the talent on this team is at average to below average for the ACC.
If u start w that observation u will have a different view.
Check the other teams – ACC is loaded w talent. Not for th weak.
Pack1998ParticipantAgree Coach Gottfried is the best we’ve had since Volcano.
3 years and 3 NCAAs – keep in mind the team he inherited was last in the ACC.
Gottfried coaching job last year was miracle work, he could have lost that team many times and didn’t.
I expect this team to re-group and have a solid remaining season.
P.S. For anyone arguing that he inherited talent, just look at the NBA rosters, that will tell you where the talent is. You can also check the other pro leagues.
Pack1998Participant100% support Doeren.
He needs to have a heart to heart with his assistants. I think you can get more out of this team than they have so far.
The fact they didn’t open w a 4-3 or even a 4-4 with a spy against BC is concerning. And I have always questioned some of the offense calls, especially in the red zone.
A comparison of coaches first few years at a base level can be misleading, as u don’t see all the sublevel changes they make from a leadership and mgt perspective – they all had to adapt and change to get to eventual success – that is what the best ones do. Persistence is important. Doeren has the fire in his belly, he’ll be great over time.
Pack1998ParticipantI am disappointed per my comments.
Struggle as I think DD is very, very good – but realize in a full week his energy is limited . . . He HAS to have better lieutenants.
Overall by year 3 or 4 of course they win with good talent – but game planning overall is poor and won’t improve.
Pack1998ParticipantWhatever – 2 bad game plans and prep is a DY thing?
I will have another on you.
Lots of games left – just need to see a plan, and multiple contingencies in reaction – 2nd week in a row it hasn’t happened.
Pack1998ParticipantNo- wrong – not DY
Pack1998ParticipantOUT COACHED! 2 weeks in a row.
Dear Dave Doeren – RETHINK EVERYTHING . . . And look to Dabo for a template – fire all your coordinators!
Working hard for one week to game plan doesn’t do it – you have to work hard every week!!!
Pack1998ParticipantTarheels got a lock on Kinston.
But Les almost got Jerry.
Why not?
State has a lot to offer – with exception of the tradition in comparison to duke and unc.
We know Gott has a big set when it comes to recruiting.
Pack1998ParticipantFor Herb’s sake – he may have been asked the question.
We all wanted him to be successful at NC State – it just didn’t happen – best of luck
03/26/2014 at 6:56 PM in reply to: National Media Outlets Say “TJ Warren To The NBA” But TJ Says “Undecided” #49630Pack1998ParticipantTJ will play in the association. Hope he gets good advice – CJ did not.
Hope the best for TJ! He is a Wolfpack great!
03/25/2014 at 10:19 PM in reply to: National Media Outlets Say “TJ Warren To The NBA” But TJ Says “Undecided” #49594Pack1998ParticipantFood for thought – his potential never changes.
He ain’t a lottery pick this year – he has a better chance of being a top 10 next year.
He should probably stay.
Pack1998ParticipantGott and staff are doing a terrific job. This season could have been a disaster yet it ended with an ACC POY and NCAA bid.
For perspective – the team Gott inherited was last in the ACC with a losing overall record. In 3 years he and his staff have done very well. Most impressed with player development – look at guys like Freeman and Washington.
Archie is doing well. Still a limited data set for analysis, but who thought he wouldn’t be a fine coach? On a similar note – keep an eye out for Levi Watkins.
Looks like we didn’t miss out on Turgeon. Marshall is great, that could have easily happened here. No worries – don’t think he would have done the same here. And if they lose to Kentucky today and flame out next year it is back to reality for Wichita. Do think he is great. Same w Beilein.
Shaka won’t go to Wake – lateral move at this point. Lesson learned is that luring good coaches away is tough since the rise of the mid-majors ($).
Pack1998ParticipantState played well – they had the ball at the end of regulation, tie ball game, with a chance win.
State again had the ball at the end of OT w a tie ball game and a chance to win.
We r a very crazy fan base – this is for sure. And we certainly have no confidence, much less expectations .
Pack1998ParticipantUh . . . In review post emotion watching now – amazed at this entire game – last minutes of the regulation just unreal w the fouls – at least one ref had a conscious.
And the facts – giving a foul and putting state on the line on that last possession of OT actual gave UNC an advantage – as otherwise they at best only go to 2OT.
This game changed me some way.
There is a real business impact to State’s revenue for these types of games – it likely far exceeds, over a few years, any buyout clause from the ACC. This year alone may cost State and NCAA bid.
Pack1998Participant9-9 with a chance of 10-8 would be a great coaching job by our standards. This team could have been lost (season lost) a few times this season.
Pyramid of success style is a good approach for Gott.
Great write up btw!!!
Pack1998ParticipantDoeren is gonna be very good.
I like the letter – as a fan u can be unhappy w the results this year. But don’t ding the guy for stepping up and accepting it, and then putting on paper he will work tirelessly.
Year 3 will be the year – do not expect miracles next year except to be a little better.
Cow – agree w ya – feel it could be setting up like Mack in UNC – except . . . well, there are a few differences.
