Grey, I appreciate your opinion and certainly wish I could be as optimistic as you. The fact is we should be further along as a team. We have talent, yet we continue to have many of the same challenges year over year. If they get fixed we will have a decent season. If not, DD should be fired. If the past 4 years were any sign, we will be looking for a new coach at the end of the season.

After two games, most of our issues are issues I mentioned in the off season. All I heard was how much better we were going to be because the offense was competing with this great defense. The glass half full folks wanted to point to our defense line. I pointed to us missing almost the entire secondary with average linebackers. The secondary and d-line rely on each other, so when one sucks the other is going to look much worse too. Add in a D coordinator who doesn’t learn from his mistakes and we are in for a world of hurt.

As for offense, The line is actually worse than it was actually worse than it was last year. Finley has no internal clock in his head and hangs on to the ball too long. There are positives and negatives for that. I was wrong about our WR as they have come along way.

The ACC would never go for it as long as Swoffy is commish. What surprises me is this was all instituted under his watch and no one is calling for his accountability in this. The NCAA has been on the verge of collapsing for years, this may be the straw that breaks the camels back. I don’t see any ACC schools suing the NCAA if UNC gets off.

What i really want is for Clemson president to be at the hearing, level swift and severe punishment then turn to Swofford and and say ” The North Remembers….Winter is Coming”

Rye, I am in agreement. Just making the point many folks wanted this years ago, now they got it but seem to be unhappy about it.

I don’t understand why anyone could be disappointed with KK so far. I get some had their hopes up for Archie, but sometimes things just dont work out. From the moment KK was hired he has worked his butt off recruiting and setting the program the way he wants. I remember quite a few people on here wanted to go the Jay Wright route with 4 guards and a big man. Those same individuals are gone since the hiring.Odd when you get what you want.

Grey I constitute in game management to be when to go for it on 4th, when the game is on the line make sure we put it in this persons hands, time management. And then in the coordinators ears when we are headed in the wrong direction. An example would be lets get the ball down field a few times etc. I believe coordinators should ahve the freedom to call plays as long as the scheme etc is being done so in the HC vision. I remember the CTC years where he wanted to be actively involved in everything and thus screwed it up.

Grey you only look at the things that support your opinion. What about the pick or other fumbles which was uncommon for that Clemson team. I know I know in your world our stellar defense forced all of those turnovers and we were one field goal away from winning. By Golly we win that game and those other losses after it wouldn’t have happened either because of the confidence we would have gained.

The fact is we were picked as a sleeper because our d line was good and our the number of returning starters on offense. We were mediocre at best last year and will be this year as well. I mean we lost to BC at home. I look forward to your perspective in late October.

Grey, let me get this straight. We should have someone else handle in game management? If the position coaches are doing the development and schemes, what exactly does DD do in that scenario? Also in regards to the premise that making a few field goals makes us a 10 win season is just plain crazy. The Clemson game you speak of, we were only in because they turned the ball over a few thousand times. One could argue by the same premise that one turnover taken away from us and we lose by double digits. DD is a nice guy, a good administrator, and a not so good football coach.

I like how people say we were missed field goals away from a 10 win season. In sports thats crap. You have no idea what effect a made field goal has in the game. Does the other team come right back and score? Does it motivate them to focus more and not turn the ball over 5 times? There are hundred of what ifs in games and making a field goal doesn’t guarantee the outcome would have changed. Yes we have a veteran offensive line, that was mediocre last year. I hate looking at returning starters to judge whether a team will be good. It means very little when those starters were average at best. We also have an inexperienced secondary but talented so how quickly they step up determines alot about our season. While we have talent, we still need to have a lot go right this season for us to up the win total.

If we were in that situation I would agree. However look at where he is from. I don’t believe he has an interest in school so basketball is it for him. With that taken into account, it’s only logical to assume he was told he has no shot in the NBA so he decided Europe is it for him. Plus I believe him and Rowan are close, so they are headed the same direction. School isn’t for everyone. Sucks for us though.

I think this becomes more of a trend throughout college basketball. There are other leagues and if you get told, you don’t have what it takes to make an NBA roster, why wouldn’t you go play overseas? Someone will pay him more money playing basketball than he will make with a degree. Its an ugly trend that’s on the rise. Cant say I blame the kids though I would consider it as well.

Based on the schedule I don’t see how we win more than 7 games this year. 2 possibly 3 losses out of Louisville, FSU and Clemson. 2 Gimme games in Furman and Marshall. The rest are 100% toss up games. @ND @ Pitt @WFU @BC. With a home game against Clemson between them. Thats a tough road to be banking on wins. .

Grey, I understand your continual optimism and looking forward not back. I wish I could still do that. Unfortunately when it is decades of mediocrity, I cannot. Every year is a disappointment, and nothing in DD tenure has given me reason to believe it will be better. You say if we had a kicker we are multiple wins better, well we didn’t and we lost. When we do have a a good kicker we will have a sucky defense, and lose. When we have a great D, our QB is terrible. It is always something. No coach in recent history has been able to put it all together. Looking at the schedule if we are a better football team I don’t see the record being much better. I like many fans have lost hope that we will ever be good in football, because the past had drained us of that hope.

I grew up watching Ed McCaffrey play for the Giants and Broncos. He was probably one of the most underappreciated players in the NFL during his time, except of course by his QBs who all loved him. I look forward to seeing his son play for the Panthers

Yes Grey we must. It is the past that teaches us to hope. Unfortunately when looking at our past it is mediocre therefore not much hope. All the things you mention sound great and always do in May. Then the season comes, NC State $#!T occurs, and hopes are dashed. When this happens over decades, it wears on you until you would rather spend your time and money doing other things. I havent gotten there yet but many of my friends have.

I think the hardest problem is identifying where we really are developing better. I agree on the physical part, but outside of that I am not sure. Is it the RB ability to run and take hits or is it the Oline blocking? Is the QB holding the ball too long or the O line blocking, or the receivers not getting open cleanly? All valid points and probably a little bit of all of it at times. Outside of our DL I don’t see our players getting extremely better year over year. Part of that is coaching, as I don’t think they put many of the skill position players in a position to succeed.

Funny how you hear what you want to hear. I never said they were small and slow. I said they don’t get good separation, and lack the fundamentals required to get separation. Being tall and fast is only a portion of the equation. For example, Kelvin Benjamin ran a 4.53 40 time and is 6 foot giant. The knock on him last year was he didnt run precise routes and couldn’t get separation from the defender. But since he doesn’t get separation, to you that would mean he is 5 foot 6 and ran a 5 second 40?

Also, I hope Dayes gets drafted to a place where he gets an opportunity to play. I think he can be a solid back in the NFL.

COW either way we will still have the same problem. I don’t see how we are better this coming season, when very little will have changed. I say this every year, in the major sports, “I hope I am wrong and we are better than I think we will be.” Most years I am disappointed.

I was the one who said they don’t get separation. I watched every game this past season with a former ACC safety and NFL player. He was very clear in pointing out for a defense how easy the offense is to defend. Even rewinding plays to show the receiver struggling. Therefore I stick to my point. Are the receivers big and fast sure, but they aren’t being taught how to run routes smoothly or how to use their bodies to help them. They have the physical skills, but not the fundamentals to go with those skills. Whether it is because our QB cannot throw the ball well down the field or the OC not calling the right plays our offense is easy to predict. Run play, or pass to the back are options one and two. Option three and four is either an out pattern or curl pattern by the WR, normally 10 to 12 yards. This allows the safeties to come up because they aren’t worried about much else than those options. But I guess he doesn’t know what he is talking about either.

Tractor then explain to me why we continue to struggle? Kids DD recruited are there, solid talent. Yet we cannot win at the line of scrimmage, our receivers do not get separation from defenders. We are no threat to go deep unless it is a broken play or missed tackle. We are predictable, and in college football that means you are going to lose. Unless of course you just have better talent which we do not. I don’t think all the coaches suck, just the ones the provide the direction of the offense.

I am talking offense only as I think the defense was considerably better last year. Unfortunately I think they take a step back due to experience.
