We need NCAA will let us recruit and play a guy by the name of Mitch Gilliam. He will give the tar holes the treatment they deserve. Check out his highlight reel

Man I was so pissed when Warren “turned it over” I almost punched my television screen. Then I realized the holes would win again by making the Wolfpack pay. Few will ever realize how perfect a game we have to play to beat a blue blood. We have to block 10 shots, make 10 threes, and they have to have an off night at the same time for it to happen thanks to to our “self inflicted turnovers”, charges, folding under pressure.

I’m definitely worried about the transition buckets but we had to prepare for that against Duke as well. They might not be as good at getting up the court as ol Roy’s teams but they are close. UNC is going to try to own the paint and the boards. We have to continue to shoot well, defend the paint, and just make UNC work. If we can slow their transition offense in the ways you all described and disrupt their drives then I like our chances. I know its easier said than done and I really appreciate all the breakdowns. I know football fairly well, I watch basketball and have been learning the game the last 15 or so years.

Still don’t know what a Box and 1 is, thanks to Syracuse I know what a 2-3 and a 1-3-1 zone is. I don’t know if I’ll ever know what a high post offense is. I know our movement without the ball is often suspect, our screens are often suspect, and our spacing (Duke game aside) usually has us in poor position to get offensive rebounds.

I’ll watch and learn with the rest of the Atlanta contingent in a little town called Smyrna. Go Pack!!! Excited for the game tomorrow.

    ***fyi I’m a basketball illiterate

For a team used to pressuring the ball up the court quickly to try to score in transition will they be as flustered by the full court pressure? At times I wondered why didn’t full court press to break the 8-0 run, hell they were doing it to us but we wanted to limit quick scores and I bet the calculation is Duke was having a hard time scoring in the half court (prior to the run) so why make the transition buckets easier knowing they want to score fast. We would have put them at the line (stops clock) or worse they get two quick points.

UNC will also have about the same preparation in transition. Lets hope our half court defense holds up, I think zone will slow down their bigs if they get going. Paige has put up big games but he’s not consistently a great shooter is he? I hope we throw in some double teams/traps as soon as they cross mid court a few times to throw them off. Given the size of their lineup do we really need to chase them around the perimeter with a man defense?

before crucifixion remember I’m self proclaim a bball IQ of half my age… I’m under 35. Lets use this as a teaching moment

I wish I had the ability to “Like” the posts as well as the majority of the responses to them. VaWolf and WVWolf thank you for compiling. BC was matchups and that Louisville game that QB who fumbled happened to have that knee or elbow down right as the ball came out and that was a 14 point swing. As was our multiple turnovers against Ga Tech.

That game got out of hand but before we lost our friend “Mo” as in momentum that game started out pretty good.

I liked my viewpoint of the past season better before I saw the numbers lol. We don’t look very good on paper but somehow this team eeked out 8 wins. Whatevs I’ll take it.

Am I missing something? I’ve got that puzzled look on my face like I used to when I would look at the box score after Duke or UNC played BC, FSU, GT, Wake, or us and I would see that the blue bloods were destroyed relative to FG%, rebounds, and assists. But there is that one intangible, the foul line and our best players would be in foul trouble while their best are cleaning up at the free throw stripe.

I guess it makes sense, we did barely win versus sub par non conference opponents and we were what, 3-5 in conference? I guess these numbers fill in the gaps where the record 8-5 leaves off. I rather focus on the record and hope our boys pull off 9-10 wins next year.

man when our boys play like they did yesterday, I’m just giddy about watching them again. I’m the diehard, think state can beat anybody type of guy like many of us are here.

This time even I’m like man this has let down game written all over it. Prove me wrong PACK!

I’ve had a change to watch the replay. Looking at Anya’s swing out and come back, I think it would be difficult to that quickly predict where Anya was going to swing back around, focus on making contact, catch the ball from the referee after establishing yourself out of bounds and kick the ball up the court to start the break and transition.

It was all so bang bang that I thought it was a coincidence. I wasn’t there and only have tv angles to rely on but when Duke player runs to sideline Anya was swinging out and the kid was looking to the ref for the ball. He seems to make contact, barely notice and passes the ball up court. I’d probably give any team the benefit of the doubt, but I hate Duke and was looking hard for malicious activity but i didn’t spot it. I’ll give them a pass on this one play, never saw the Turner push.

I agree with most posters here that we don’t have a cohesive offensive scheme implemented yet. One thing I did like about Herb Sendek coached teams is that the players were well coached to execute his system. I didn’t say they were coached on the right system but…
    1. They moved well without the ball
    2. They set good screens
    3. They shot the ball when open and hit open shots like UVA did last night
    4. They cut hard to the basket
    5. They finished descently well at the rim
    6. They hit free throws

I think if Gottfried’s teams could do those things well, plus leverage their above average athleticism one on one from time to time then we would have a really competitive team on the offensive side. I’m not going to comment on the defense because our offense contributes a little to our lackluster defense. When we get our offense working, which it has been effective at times, then I would prefer to critique our defense in isolation

Man I would love it if those new RB’s were ok Redshirting. Dayes Thornton, and Samuels are good enough backs to spread the rock around. When Thornton leaves the program after next year I would love having a bridge year with Dayes, Samuels, and the newbys.

Not being sarcastic, but maybe I’m crazy. I guess if the new guys are better then they should play… but for the program would spacing and their own development be better if they sat? Just curious.

Hmm I think we are working with what we have and I think we are redshirting some descent WR’s. I’m hopeful for the future with what we have and I’m confident that if what we have isn’t getting it done those boys down in FL will come up here and show us how to catch a football.

Bill I think you are right that some folks might have been converted to WR’s from RB and thus weren’t recruited to have great hands. However, coaches have to know who can catch and who can’t and limit the playing time to those that can hold on to it. If I remember correctly we have a 4 star redshirt WR from Charlotte that should play next year. People speak of Nysheim Hines as if he can play WR too. I think people can learn/be coached how to catch more consistently. I think their talent/early level coaching got them this far. I think a good fundamental WR coach can get those folks past where we have been these last few years.

Bill I’m not quite sure where you are going with that… especially making guys that can catch better. But I will say this. There is a stark difference between the receiving corps of today’s performances versus that during the Amato years. I would say the last two years drop % I haven’t really seen the likes of since the O’cain era.

Now, I’ve coached youth football for years in the past but don’t claim to be an expert. However, the drops I’m sure haven’t gone unnoticed by the head coach. I can’t say that I have seen much improvement, granted I don’t get to see practices. Also, one would assume coach Doeren mentioned that we need better production out of the WRs. My experience with people is that they take feedback several different ways. Some people can take the DD approach, I haven’t done a good enough job and I have to do better. Most people like hearing that. Others point fingers, they exclaim how they should be left to do their job, they exclaim they can’t go execute for the players. I’m not saying the conversation ever took place, or that the coach responded less than appropriately.

I’m just saying I can easily envision a scenario where Coach DD and prior coach have a difference of opinion regarding cause/improvement and DD choosing (or prior wr coach choosing) to look for talents (or take their talents) elsewhere. Just saying its plausible in my mind not that it is likely or anything. Hope that clarifies where I was going.

Pakfanistan that makes it alot different. Where do you shoot at people and not expect them to shoot back. Maybe that’s my days in Chicago talking but I guess I get it if you are shooting a pellet gun at a “friendly” who knows you and leaves you fairly confident his retaliation will also be enforced using pellets… maybe (skeptically)… but if you shoot (non paintballs) at a random person that’s careless on so many levels.

I don’t know this for sure but the last few seasons we have season some real shaky hands at the WR position, Bo Hines obviously excluded from that. Maybe there were differences of opinion on how to prepare our young student athletes and the on field product didn’t necessarily reinforce what we were doing was working well.

the new guy seems to be well regarded and come in with great experience and ties to S. Florida. Welcome and lets tear it up out there!

I was like am I reading this correctly? A BB gun can’t be fired inside of city limits? Who knew that was a rule. Carrying a BB gun in your pocket is carrying a concealed weapon?

I love and respect police everywhere but it sounds like this one was looking for something to do.

I’m not mad at the change. Our WR’s can’t catch and our last coach probably didn’t share DD’s enthusiasm for improving that situation

WV Wolf thank you for sharing very cool. Its funny I can to this day not be that big of a Jordan fan because he went to the hill… but I can’t find one thing not to like about Stuart Scott. He is also in a rival fraternity and I’m still like dah well I still like the guy. Only way to explain it, is he was a great human being per just about every reference including SFN and he was great at what he did which I witnessed with my own eyes and ears.

not to throw fuel but in the office last week one of the partners at my firm asked me and several others did we hear the NC State jab on tv. I responded that I heard it (and remembered it through the drinking) so I acknowledge it was a jab. However, I responded to the GA Tech (newly promoted partner) why did he pick on us, they were down more to GA Tech and beat them by almost just as much.

But GA Tech actually has played an impressive season aside from losing to uncheat so that wouldn’t have made his point I guess. I agree with packalum… it was a diss but acceptable given we couldn’t hold Oregon’s jock this year.

I noticed a pretty big foul disparity in our favor. I was looking at the box score we had 9 more rebounds 5 more turnovers we shot the ball a little better than them… then it hit me in the last place a state fan would ever look to explain a win.

We shot 18 more fouls than they did. Were they reaching on our guards or were we attacking the paint all night. I’m happy and excited for the win but getting that type of the FT advantage again seems probably about as likely as Ralston getting 8 threes in a game.

Again, I didn’t watch the game. I’d love it if our guards were attacking the paint like that and drawing fouls.

it shouldn’t hurt our chances, he allows us to demonstrate our commitment to the ground game which should entice recruits like him. But then again if he wants to play as a true freshmen and not redshirt then maybe it does a small bit.

I remember the good old days when we were the destination for premier RB’s from PA, to Florida, to NC.

    5* Backs
    Tramaine Hall
    Darrell Blackmon
    T.A. McClendon
    Toney Baker
    Andre Brown

WTF how the hell did we pull all those off lol from Ray Robinson to that lol And for the record Ray Rob was a great kid he was a Sr. when I was a freshman and really nice to everyone. But the rest of those he was not. Im still in shock at how Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley both got away and both went to GA. Nyheim’s commitment will demonstrate RB’s confidence in the Pack again. Again, Shad (probably my favorite player on the team) and Dayes play well for us too, but those other guys were talented on another level. Call it the difference between Richard Washington and Koren Robinson. Both talented one is just better.
