^CD spaghettimodels.com is one of my favorite sites on the interwebs. Unabashedly old school, and chock-full of fun stuff. Visit that site every other day during hurricane season, and several times/day when one of these monsters is bearing down.

    NCSU1987,

I should have clarfied that the most prone to violence are seeing an upswing.

Ether, North Carolina is as non violent as ever.

    McCallum

Ah, I take your meaning. Thanks for the clarification.

Also notice the slow creep up in violent crime the last several years. The slow indicators are out there that the police will not fulfill their duties for fear of lawsuits and cries of racism.

Just curious if there’s a source to back this up?

Didn’t have a lot of time, but pulled latest FBI violent crime data:

    https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/table-1

From the page, definition of violent crime:

The violent crime figures include the offenses of murder, rape (legacy definition), robbery, and aggravated assault.

Based on the data, we can visualize as:

    violent crime rate

Yes, there is an uptick in rate for 2015, but there have been previous upticks that did not alter the overall downward trend. I certainly see nothing that shows me “…slow creep up in violent crime the last several years”.

Do you have a better source than the FBI’s database?

Hey Beej, not sure if I understand your rules, but I’ll take a stab:

    McCrory/Cooper: Cooper wins, by 4-9

    Clinton/Trump: Trump wins, by 1-3

    Burr/Ross: Burr Wins by 1-4

Will be interesting to see if Burr’s laissez-faire (non)campaign will bite him. I’m quite surprised by how well Ross is showing in polls.

    Two points
    1) I enjoy watching the back and forth between McCallum and paki.
    2) It seems race relations in the US has stepped back 50 years. I truly thought having a black president would improve things but it has not improved and appears to have made things worse.

    Agree on both counts.

Nice work. Coaches need to get JMac some more reps, too.

Am I the only one uncomfortable with the penalties? Maybe I’m just remembering mainly the Street f-up, but seems like there were more than usual, even for an opener….

This was amazing to watch. I stopped breathing a couple of times – those boys were absolutely amazing.

People will be talking about Phelps’ risky launch and that unbelievable turn for years.

^We had many options, but ultimately decided to let her remain in public schools. During middle school, we kept her in a program for exceptional students, then mainstreamed her for high school. Our goal was to provide her experience with diversity, while maximizing her educational opportunity. There were other options available (like charter), and who knows if that would have been better. In this case, not even hindsight is 20/20. Glad you’re having a good experience with it, I know several parents who would agree.

Public education is one area where I’ve almost reached the conclusion that the status quo is unsalvageable. There needs to be a cataclysmic change before things will get better. And again, you’re spot on with parental attitude: too many want to rely on “the village” to educate their children, and as a way to eschew their own responsibilities. As I’ve said before, I’m typically middle of the road moderate, from a political standpoint. I agree that sometimes “the village” can help. But it NEVER replaces my responsibility to my family.

Overall, this was a predictable outcome based on the revised NOA, but I have to say the tone and contents of the response took my breath away. Boiling it all down, this response contains two essential messages: “Hey, NCAA: yeah, we cheated, but we cleverly stayed outside your jurisdiction, so f*ck you. And for the rest of y’all out there, the NCAA is our bitch, especially their cute, little legal team, bless their hearts, so f*ck you, too.”

It’s been said many times before, but the one overarching principle at work here is that the NCAA’s model relies on academic institutions performing as such with integrity. Twenty years of academic fraud cannot be prosecuted if the institution doesn’t recognize the fraud, and doesn’t self-report it. I’ve continued to think that because of the SACS response (where Folt actually admitted fraud, actually used the word), the NCAA had a wedge under the door. Based on this response, following the years of back-and-forth, the NCAA is cowering under UNC’s whip, and my hope pretty much lies in ashes.

I started by saying the response contained two messages, but that’s over-complicating the picture. There’s only one message: “f*ck you!” It just happens to be addressed to two groups: the NCAA, and all the other member institutions.

The NCAA is on the clock. Despite all signs, the COI can completely ignore UNC’s response and do the right thing. My intuition now says they won’t.

After the NCAA rules, the other member institutions will be on the clock. They will have the opportunity to respond to both UNC and the NCAA. Will they do the right thing? My intuition asks: “when have they ever?”
