06/06/2014 at 3:25 PM in reply to: UNC McCants admits to sham classes during 2005 Championship #52570MrPlywoodParticipant
“A copy of McCants’ university transcript, labeled “unofficial” and obtained by “Outside the Lines,” shows that in his non-African-American Studies classes, McCants received six C’s, one D and three F’s. In his African-American Studies classes, 10 of his grades were A’s, six B’s, one a C, and one a D. The UNC registrar’s office declined to send McCants an official, signed transcript because of a May 2005 hold on its release. According to the UNC Athletic Department, McCants had university property that had never been returned.”
Didn’t one of the recent unX baseball players have a similarly stunning academic turnaround once he took a summer full of AA Studies courses?
MrPlywoodParticipantSo the pressure of keeping quiet literally drove McCants crazy?
06/06/2014 at 1:06 PM in reply to: UNC McCants admits to sham classes during 2005 Championship #52553MrPlywoodParticipant…”than has been portrayed by Mr. McCants and others.”
And others? More than one rogue is a trend, right?
MrPlywoodParticipantAs a person with Czech/Slovak heritage, I can say that those fools got no rhythm. Thank goodness for the Carribean part of me.
I’ll forgive bikini girl.
MrPlywoodParticipantAs a design alum, I can say that the brand book contains a lot of BS. This guy’s post sums it up nicely:
http://www.nunesmagician.com/2014/5/29/5761778/ten-things-acc-logo-branf-announcement-swofford-book
Here’s the company that created the logo and other stuff:
http://www.smebranding.com <—-Although, with offices on 5th Avenue and in London, they may be full of BS but they know how to sell it!
Of note, the rebrand SME did for the America East conference supposedly symbolized the AE as “progressive and forward leaning toward the future”. Meanwhile, the ACC logo is “Set in a custom-designed font created specifically for the league” and “leans hard into a brilliant future”. Hmmmm. Somebody copied and pasted a bit.
My 20yo was looking over my shoulder as I wrote this and said “A logo needs to look cool and be memorable”. That about sums it up. Seriously. I have no doubt that design and marketing impact communication, business, popular culture and decisions people make, or else I wouldn’t have a career. But attributing all that symbolism to the logo is a huge stretch.
From a very practical standpoint, they have created the two-color version with METALLIC SILVER ink. With the increased quality and speed of digital printing, hardly anyone prints with spot colors anymore. So 98% of the time that exciting Silver line becomes Pantone Cool Gray 6. Stunning!
MrPlywoodParticipantThat ump might have ended State’s game, but State pretty much ended State’s season.
MrPlywoodParticipantNo wonder the ump couldn’t see, the Fox logo is blocking his view.
MrPlywoodParticipant“You know how embarrassing it is to a catcher to be bound to peeping into the dugout?”
I can’t even imagine. That sounds ludicrous to me.
MrPlywoodParticipantBill, it sounds like you got some sand in your rum and coke! I’ve been watching the NBA playoffs and I’ve seen plenty of good D and excellent passing, so don’t blame it on them. I’ve also seen plenty of college games with teams just standing around on offense for a good portion of their possession, so I don’t have any problem with the shorter clock. I think it’s an easier sell to get kids to play tough D with a shorter clock. And, the women use a 30 second clock and their game seems to be just fine.
As far as the kind of game I’d like to see, yes, it would be an “open” game with less grabbing and fouling and more emphasis on skill. And that includes defense.
MrPlywoodParticipantThe doublespeak this guy spouts is great, especially this line “While all this is going on, though, let’s recognize that the scandal and its aftermath is far from the most important issue facing Carolina and our faculty…”
And this “While I sympathize with Smith’s historian’s impulse to discover every detail of past misdeeds…”
And this “That’s what I meant when I said we have enough information now to make the necessary reforms.”
First, continue your attempt to minimize. Carolina blue is, I dare say, a global brand which has nothing to do with the 28,000 students he cares so much about. They want that goose to keep laying blue eggs.
Second, keep your head buried man, protect the legacy at all costs.
Three, no you don’t have enough info yet. If you don’t know the who, what, how and why about the fake classes, you don’t know everything you need.
Lastly, it’s been my experience that dealing wrongdoing involved two components – the punishment and the reforms. uNX is trying their damnedest to avoid any punishment. Although with the ineffective NCAA I don’t know where that would come from other than from loss of licensing deals.
MrPlywoodParticipantWhat trend? The trend that has State’s class ranked #17 (ESPN)?
MrPlywoodParticipantI’m all for more media outlets picking up this story, but I’m not holding my breath for something tangible to happen. The comments section does have a lot of input from disgruntled alums and parents of alums – those who paid for a *NX education who feel like it’s being devalued with each story. Of course the Kool-Aid drinkers are also in attendance, happily sipping their sugary libation while floating down the river in their inner tubes.
I still get a chuckle out of the university’s contention that the fraudulent classes scheme was OK because all students had access to them. I believe that’s akin to cutting of your nose to spite your face.
MrPlywoodParticipant^ I learned about “state dependent learning” in a Psych class and applied that to the exam I mentioned above. I did all my studying in Harrelson in the same seat in the same room that the exam was held in. When I wrote the exam I could not get the info on paper fast enough, just looking around the room triggered study thoughts. Pretty cool.
MrPlywoodParticipantI’m one of those guys who used to skateboard down the ramp back in the 70’s and 80’s. That was loads of fun. We always had an escape plan and a meet-up spot. I could have sworn that we took some 8mm footage of that, but it has not surfaced. I do have some footage of skating under and around the Hall.
I completed one of my finest all-time final exams in that place, US History from Civil War to Present (at the time) 🙂
MrPlywoodParticipantPIR, I’d be willing to bet that ESPN has people on the payroll for that express purpose. There are a number of usual suspects who should have been banned years ago, but somehow they persist. I rarely post there anymore.
04/16/2014 at 3:18 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51207MrPlywoodParticipantIn order to save time and keyboard wear, I suggest we go full on Prince and refer to TAFMKAWBS as a symbol. Perhaps ø would be suitable, but I’m open to suggestions.
04/16/2014 at 1:27 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51198MrPlywoodParticipantI think the team’s biggest problem for next year is unlimited meals and snacks.
MrPlywoodParticipant@C’dog – maybe it WAS a near-death experience
I’ve competed in lots of strenuous sports, from wrestling to basketball to mountain biking, but distance running just throws me. I can’t do it. On the other hand, my wife trained and ran a few 10k’s. I picked her up after one – she ran under 45 minutes and was as fresh as if she had walked around the block. She’s just made for it.
04/10/2014 at 7:56 PM in reply to: TJ Warren declares for NBA draft; future of NC State basketball #51037MrPlywoodParticipantPG: Cat, Graham (30/10)
SG: Lacey, Des (30/10)
SF: BSW, Twin A, Twin B (30/5/5)
PF: Le Nard, KW (20/20)
C: KH, Abu (20/20)I like the looks of that scenario. I was impressed by the growth of KH, Le Nard and KW and look forward to continued improvement.
MrPlywoodParticipantI have bookmarked the ROI page and will happily trot that out whenever a *nx student, alum or fan has anything to say about the quality of one education vs another.
04/08/2014 at 3:43 PM in reply to: Awesome research — length of final minute in NCAA Tournament #50938MrPlywoodParticipantI was thinking the same thing Wulfpack, that game just… ended.
MrPlywoodParticipantGiffey has a slooooow release. Dood needs to be open by 10 feet to get his shot off.
MrPlywoodParticipantIs it me or does Randle walk a lot?
MrPlywoodParticipantBoatright and Napier are pretty fast.
04/07/2014 at 4:58 PM in reply to: Breaking: Athlete advocate group files civil complaint against UNC #50790MrPlywoodParticipant^key points from the article
“Julius Nyang’oro was formerly on the Board of Trustees for an African (and heavily UNC-based) charity called “Carolina for Kibera.” A couple of years ago, NIKE made a generous $500,000 donation to Carolina for Kibera.” I followed the link to the charity, the last annual budget listed was for 2007, which was $250,000. So Nike’s donation doubled that. Also note that the Maximum Annual Budget is listed as $275k. I wonder where the extra money went.
Gov Martin serves on the board for The Institute of Defense and Business, along with Rye Barcot, co-founder of Carolina for Kibera. Conflict of interest anyone?
