I wasn’t able to watch the first half, and I missed out on today’s self-flagellation, so…
True, but of late – instead of jacking a three – he’s also made some fine passes for easy baskets underneath. The crazy thing is, doing that actually helps the entire team since the D has to respect the pass, which results in more open chances, and his teammates stay involved. Who knew?
I called him “N C 2 A Don Shea”, since that’s what he called that institution. I don’t know if he ever got on board with “N C double-A”. 🙂
Never met him. He was certainly an institution in the Triangle sports scene.
Haha – I noticed Cat on the second viewing of the ESPN highlight. Got a good laugh out of that.
All other concerns aside, how cool is it that a guy can run full speed down the court, pull up from 26(?) feet and make it?
Way back to the charge call on Hunt, I’d like to hear from others with more experience coaching/reffing/playing… C’Dog?
Here are the NCAA guidelines re: legal guarding position, they clearly state that that the primary defensive player can move to stay in front of the dribbler, and does NOT have to have both feet on the floor.
Art. 6. To maintain a legal guarding position after the initial position has been
attained, the guard:
a. Is not required to continue having the torso face the opponent;
b. Cannot have either foot out of bounds;
c. May raise the hands or may jump within his own vertical plane;
d. May shift to maintain guarding position in the path of the dribbler, provided that the guard does not charge into the dribbler or otherwise
cause contact;
e. May move laterally or obliquely to maintain position provided such a move is not toward the opponent when contact occurs;
f. Is not required to have the feet on the playing court when shifting in the path of the dribbler or when moving laterally or obliquely; and
g. May turn or duck to absorb shock when contact by the dribbler is imminent. In such a case, the dribbler shall not be absolved from the responsibility of contact.Sometimes I feel like Norman Dale, just let ’em lose with 4 on the floor. Let them learn from their mistakes. Then I think, eff that I want to see a win!
You don’t have to have the feet set, you have to have established position which I think Anya did. The defender can be moving backwards and draw a charge. And Hunt just put his shoulder down and barrelled in…

I actually found your post before you replied chop, I was curious to see how it got started. And you were fair in your comment:

This game did nothing to ease my fears that dd and staff are in over their head. Those fears are based on what I saw last year, this year and someone who worked with previous staffs. OTOH, every time he is interviewed, I come away impressed. Jury is still very much out and hopefully, we’ve got a great coach here in Raleigh that we won’t have to fire.
This season will be very interesting. I think its possible we can have a good one and plenty of good seasons have had shaky starts.”
