Which is when you outkick your coverage, (read, finish in top 3rd) – you get paid that year like a Top 3rd coach.
The question remains: what happens when you shank one or two?
Who knows about the veracity of the USA Today article, but someone wants that info out there. IMO negotiating in public is a bad approach.

As contract negotiations stall with N.C. State, Dave Doeren gets in mix for other jobs
“North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren and athletics director Debbie Yow have been engaged in a protracted and somewhat contentious standoff over his contract extension negotiations in recent days, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports, a situation serious enough that Doeren’s representatives have made multiple attempts to find an exit ramp for him from N.C. State or at least create that appearance to gain leverage.”
“Doeren, according to one person with direct knowledge of his thought process, was close to becoming the next coach at Ole Miss last weekend and canceled planned recruiting trips for his assistants last Sunday in anticipation of that announcement.”
The trick is to separate the “what is” from the “what if”. 8-4 and 6-2 is a good record no matter how you slice it, the best conference record for State in decades. Of course in hindsight it’s easy to look at the two very winnable games – SC and WF – and what if your way to 10-2, 7-1. Hopefully this season will be something to build on and not a high point. What if?

This is infuriating.. team doesn’t look ready to play. Coaches are calling bizarre crap. 4 points already left off the scoreboard because either we don’t feel it’s important to have a decent kicker on the squad or have no clue how to go about getting one.
Coaches have a Senior Moment Day?
Sean Miller hates State so much that he had his team lose two more just to minimize that impact of the Pack’s win. You have to admire his commitment.
