Wow, less than 10 years ago WF and GT had good teams….
MPParticipantI agree on Washington. As soon as Turner stopped taking too many shots (or at least too many bad shots), Washington seemed to start doing the same thing. We are definitely winning some games in spite of his offense.
OTOH I agree re: his confidence – Because I was loving his game before he started shooting too much. It is a coaching issue. They need to communicate to him what a good shot is – and when. And in the meantime, get on the boards.
MPParticipantNice, first action we get is an official review!
MPParticipantI can’t believe I have to care but can Pitt stop committing stupid fouls???
MPParticipantFunny that NC State beating GT at home actually resulted in a slight drop… But not nearly as big a drop as losing to them would cause (ahem… Wake Forest…).
MPParticipantYou’re telling me that 20 wins at 0-6 vs RPI Top 25 and 2-2 vs RPI 26-50 won’t get us in???
MPParticipantLike the sound of that ^^. But seriously we gotta get tougher on the boards. I think they out rebounded us by 16.
MPParticipantTheir O rebounding absolutely killed us today. THAT is what we have to fix.
MPParticipantI predict we win today and Swoff and his thugs make us pay for it the next 6 weeks. And we hope they stop there.
MPParticipantThe use of divisions is a joke. The ACC could establish an open rotation (with probably at least one ‘partner’) and make scheduling much more consistent and competitive.
MPParticipantAll of you experienced owners are ruining SFN’s positions and policies with facts and studies.
MPParticipantWe just suck real bad it’s awful to watch. Not Sidney Lowe awful however. Silver lining.
“New Noah” has spoken.
Good to get a win. Good to see some 2-3 matchup zone. Good to see Lewis step up and play some ball. And I agree with others re: Turner. I called him a chucker earlier this year and meant what I said. But he has greatly improved his shot selection.
I can’t help but look at this team a little differently than simply ‘you win and you’re good; you lose and you’re bad’. I think they are getting better. I also think they are going to be on the receiving end of more (hopefully not too many) drillings this season – particularly considering the road-heavy February. But as long as noone totally hits the Freshman wall, this team could be a dangerous team in the ACCT (and beyond…?). I would take that for this season, and expect better next season.
MPParticipant^Ummmm. What? [edit] What??
Awesome post! Would love to see what we would look like if the WFU game were a win… But in the end it doesn’t matter. Either we’ll ultimately become an NCAAT worthy team or we won’t. We have got to make some hay in the upcoming home games. Our February schedule is brutal. Hard to see this team entering the ACCT on the ‘goodish’ side of the bubble.
MPParticipantMy bad, it’s been so long since I voluntarily watched BC play that I forgot about him (and them).
MPParticipantI don’t know if just the top 3 ‘matter’, particuarly in a 15-16 team conference. Let’s jump to next year:
FAVORITES
1. Kxerchewsky
2/3. Boeheim
2/3. Pitino
4. WilliamsCONTENDERS
5 thru 8. Dixon / Larranaga / Hamilton / BennettTHE FIELD
Beyond that, why count…?MPParticipantGottfried better figure something out quick w/r/t offense. I don’t care if we lose every game trying to develop our young guys into future scorers.
Ralston Turner is a chucker. And everyone hates a chucker. Leaning on him to be our ‘bail out’ offense when TJW is either cold or out is going to have about a 20% success rate this season. Which is awful. But more importantly, does nothing for the future. What are we banking on, that he ‘improves’ to a 30% success rate for his senior season?
MPParticipant“I’m not the kind of coach that beats my team down and berates them,” Gottfried said.
Ol’ DB would NOT approve of this statement.
I hate to say it… Gritting my teeth… It seems too early… But…
This game is a Must Win for State.
MPParticipantFUMD
Does anyone know if the ACC could have legally told them to go F themselves for the 2013-14 season in all sports and made them spend a year in purgatory scrambling to find games against whatever D-III team was available?
THAT. Is how this should have gone down.
MPParticipant.
I vote that the pros outweigh the cons. The one previous comment that I (slightly) disagree with is with regard to football divisions. I see no reason why there should be divisions in football. The original divisions were essentially set up so we could watch FSU & Miami play for the ACC Championship every year forever and ever. Since that was obviously not on target – Why create a system where the 2 best teams in a given season may not and more often will not play for the title?
MPParticipantAwesome post.
If we don’t go at least 4-2 in our next 6 games, we’re toast. And 4-2 would probably just keep us in the discussion.
MPParticipantVitale’s still trying. Missing some key ‘facts’ though.
Syracuse looks dang good BTW. They play completely under control.
MPParticipantLOL at BSW.
The way I look at it for a team of our caliber – good talent, young, few defined scoring options – you gotta take what you can get. Winning at ND is absolutely more important than losing to Pitt at home in the big picture. Our caliber seems to be in the KenPom/BPI/RPI 60-80 range:
I assume we will lose all games (home/away) to Top 20 range teams which are Pitt, Syracuse, and Duke – Projected 4 losses.
I assume we will lose all away games to Top 20-40 range teams which are UVA, FSU, Clemson, and The Asterisk – Projected 2 losses.
I assume we will win all games (home/away) to sub-Top 100 teams which are BC, VPI, and GT – Projected 3 wins.
That leaves 9 games that start to look like ‘toss-ups’ to some extent. Either fairly even caliber/profile teams (ND, Maryland, Miami, Wake) or home court advantage evening out a matchup in the 20-40 range games. These are the games which our ‘caliber’ team must maximize wins to meet their potential.
Beating a Top 10 team at home would be gravy. If our team improves as the season goes on and wins more than their share of those ‘other’ games (and all of their must-wins), we will be a bubble-type or low-in team with a chance to do some damage in the ACC Tournament.
I’m not sure why we should expect much more than that from this team, right now. Beating Pitt on Saturday would have been nice. Beating ND on Tuesday was awesome. If we were a Top 20ish team I would feel differently… But by the way… We’re not.
MPParticipantThis is a very enjoyable post, Thank you.
This analysis, while fueling the hunger for tourney talk, is extremely premature. That’s not a criticism of the post (as I am very hongry) – But just a fact that needs to be stated. I mean, based on the data presented – UMASS is the best team in the country!
Just sayin’… RPI is gonna be ‘fluid’ in January.
Here’s to 6+ wins for State in January!
MPParticipant“Administrators point out that numerous reforms have been put in place. These include a series of stringent controls over the curriculum and faculty in which, for instance, course syllabuses will be monitored, faculty teaching assignments regularly reviewed, and classes subject to spot checks to ensure they are actually meeting.”
…and the sign out sheets! Don’t forget the sign out sheets!
MPParticipantThrow me on the Cutcliffe bandwagon. I thought Duke looked pretty dang solid against FSU in the 1st half of the ACC championship game. FSU was just another level of talented. Looking forward to seeing how they do tonight.
With that said, TAMU will probably drill them by 5 TDs.
