Forgive me if I’m being naive. But isn’t it quiet simply because it is May and basketball and football are over and baseball isn’t necessarily America’s past time anymore? The NBA playoffs are in full swing and I’m glued to that. Then I’ll turn my attention to the World Cup.

Sure, folks have called for the poll on the front page to be updated (and it seems like it finally was), but I’ve always felt those two major revenue sports were what sparked the most discussion. I figured I’d check in from time to time this summer for recruiting news and then join the discussion in earnest in the fall.

I also know less than than nothing about baseball, in general. Don’t hate me. I do like going to the batting cages near me, however.

They didn’t even make the tournament this past season. I don’t think coaching is the issue. Yurt improved exponentially under Keatts. Now, he has to sit out a year which will hurt his draft stock. He’ll be a year older when he gets to showcase his new big man skills with a new team. Also, what traditional big man had the greenlight to shoot it the way he did?

I think he’s too slow to guard most NBA 4s. And not strong enough to guard the 5 position. And he hasn’t shown the ability to improve on either of those such that he’ll be more than a bench roleplayer. But I wish him the best of luck–any success an NC State alum has at the next level in any sport is only good for our recruiting efforts.

    the transfer talk is disappointing

I agree. I felt Y7 showed way more promise in any one game this year under Keatts than he did the entirety of his season with Gott. And I truly believe coming back would help his draft stock. So unless KK told him that our incoming bigs would drastically reduce his playing time (which, defensive limitations aside, I don’t see why that would be the case), I don’t understand why he would be open to transferring and having to sit a year out. Baffles me.

I definitely believe we peaked a few weeks ago. And our interior defense was bad all season. Still, pleasantly surprised, given we were picked to finish 12th in the ACC. Agree that both Freemans and Dorn came to play; Markell also was decent. Nothing to say about Abu’s performance, maybe his injury was too much to overcome. Yurt7 had a good season, but I still don’t think he’s ready for the physicality and speed of the NBA. Though, I’m not optimistic that he will stay. Ugly last game for him if he does end up leaving.

I’m excited for next year, but man do I want some hardware in basketball. It seems we have a better shot of winning the ACC regular season or the ACC Tournament, than we do of getting to or winning the CFP. I’m hopeful that KK and the team will take some big strides this off-season.

In my time to choke meant that you let the pressure get to you and missed a critical shot due to tension. It wasn’t a general term meaning all the things you say it means.

I wasn’t questioning anyone’s fandom, I was questioning your “big talking,” saying the team choked when you don’t have a clue what choking is.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke_(sports)

I know we aren’t supposed to cite Wikipedia as a credible source, so here’s another:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/670865-power-ranking-the-top-50-worst-chokes-in-sports-history

Note, the examples in the Wikipedia article include the 2016-17 Atlanta Falcons, and the Fab 5 vs UNX Chris Webber debacle.

The difference here, is that I’m not happy to say that we choked on Wednesday. It’s what I saw. I take no glee in pointing out my observation. We were performing well, had a great season by all expectations. Went into the tournament favored to win that first game. And blew it. We got upset. You can say Robinson had a bad game the last time we played them, etc. But on paper, and in reality, we should have won that game and then I could see us losing to Clemson–a much better team than BC.

Semantics. You’d still be upset if I said we shat the bed. In some ways, saying we “weren’t ready to play” sounds even worse to me. That implies some failure on the part of the coaching staff to get us mentally prepared. Which, I don’t blame KK at all. Guys simply dropped the ball, thought they’d already won by being the fifth seed, probably thinking ahead to Clemson.

It’s funny that you’re questioning others’ fandom on a fan forum. So if someone doesn’t agree with you or uses different terminology to describe what they saw, they’re a bad fan? OK.

I (and anyone else who said they choked) didn’t say it as a good thing. It’s a bad thing they did. It’s frustrating. But hopefully they learned from it the way they did the Ga Tech loss. I don’t think anyone on this team is so sensitive as to let words like “choked” affect them. If they are, then we’re screwed either way.

Guess it’s safe now to say… “BC had their best game of the year yesterday…”

That or we “choked” and it should be us playing the Tiggers 😉

That’s a strong accusation for someone who doesn’t have any skin in the game.

Athletes and teams choke all the time. The Spurs choked against the Heat in 2013. The Falcons choked against the Patriots last year. I absolutely would say it to an athlete’s face. However, I wouldn’t do so belligerently; I’m not an idiot. Reporters ask about teams choking all the time in post-game. Do it respectfully. But just pointing out my view. We are clearly the better team, both on paper and in actuality. We were favorites to win, we destroyed them last time, we had an extra day of rest on them, we are (likely) going to make the NCAA tournament. We choked, dropped the ball, disappointed. Whatever you want to call it. It doesn’t mean I don’t support the team anymore. Calling it like I see it and if we play that game 10 times, we should win it at least 7 times. When you expect to win and you are expected to win and you don’t, they call it an “upset” for a reason. Whether you got upset, you choked, you wet the bed, there’s no nice word or phrase for it.

Go Pack. Go forth and improve, play better, put this one behind you.

I like Keatts. I really do. And the team went above and beyond my (very tempered) expectations this season. My disappointment (and I suspect others’) stems from the fact that no matter who the coach is, (HWSNBN, Sid, Gott, KK) we seem to squander great opportunities when we create them. No one expected us to finish 3rd in the ACC, but we did. We got the single bye. The door was wide open, waiting for us to walk through, and we completely missed it; as if we didn’t see it/walked right past it.

So we understand we have to be patient, but to get any sort of respect in the Triangle and conference, we have to start walking through those doors when we open them (against all odds too–cheating, bad refs, suspensions, injuries). Because the talent level is rising every year. A few years from now, VT could be the new UVA. Or Clemson will break through just like FSU did a few years ago. Heck, maybe WF will rise once again. 50 years could pass between our last ACC Tournament title (which still matters a great deal to me) and many will still be saying WTNY.

Bottom line is, we choked yesterday. Hopefully, we still make the NCAA, get a favorable seed, and make a healthy run. But I am of the belief it is much easier to win your conference tourney than the entire NCAA tournament, despite having to play so many back-to-back games. I just want some hardware, any hardware.

I would give anything to win an ACC Tournament. 31 years. I’m 29 years old. Wow.

Embarrassed in front of the entire conference on a stage like Madison Square Garden. Yikes.

    Wrong.

    Barclays Center. Brooklyn.

Not embarrassed, just ACCT time! Remember the Pack has been ‘that team’ quite sever times during the “Dark Ages”. How many times have we played in the ACCT finals since Herb? How many times did we deserve to (ie 0!).
Let BC have their time, they are who we were perhaps 4 or 5 times recently. Hell, they may win the whole dame thing then what would you say?!

Want to put money on BC winning? 😉

You are right. Wrong tournament. My bad. Still embarrassing even if the shiite Brooklyn Nets play there.

BC could be a tourney caliber team next year.

Not to be snarky, but, in your opinion, what does that say about us? Are we a tourney caliber team that just effed up the way tourney caliber teams sometimes do? A la Dook vs. Lehigh/Mercer?

We had the single bye. The way we played, we needed a quadruple bye. What is it going to take for us to breakthrough in an ACC Tournament? Forget about the NCAA; if we don’t have the cajones for the conference tourney, we can’t even begin to talk about a Natty.

We don’t deserve to make the NCAA after that performance. And I really thought we were a lock before this game. After that loss, with teams like ND and Cuse still in the running, I can’t see us getting in. Embarrassed in front of the entire conference on a stage like Madison Square Garden. Yikes. This one hurts.

2 would be smarter. This is a tournament. Don’t take the chance on the 3. Make the 2, get the stop, go to OT, win it there. We played to lose in regulation and taking a 3 would reinforce that.

I wonder if Keatts will just tell ’em he’s not going call any plays in the second half and them just to go out and have fun

    I almost died laughing.

We don’t have the players for that type of malarkey.

    I’m looking at Yurt7, ABU & Freeman… and shaking my head…

Really, I’m not surprised by Abu or Y7. Abu is self-explanatory; his talent left two years ago when we still had Gott. Y7 really cooled off about midway through the ACC season. If he had kept his early season pace up, he might have made 1st Team All ACC. Lennard Freeman didn’t get enough minutes in ACC play, if you ask me (sorry, thought you were referring to Al at first). That’s coming back to haunt us.

The thing that really bothers me is the lack of effort I’m seeing, which has to bother KK as well. I hope Coach is bothered enough in the locker room to kick our arses into gear. Otherwise, this one is over and we’ll be sweating it out next Sunday. Which, I wanted to avoid for once.

Golden opportunities, man. Win at GT last week and we would be a “lock” in everyone’s eyes. But we lost. Win today and there’s no question. But we’re losing. It’s like we constantly think ahead to the next opponent and play down to the current one. It’s maddeningly frustrating. But then again, I’m insane for wishing for the same thing over and over again and getting the same results.

What exactly is Batts good at? Not even FTs. Defense is fine, but really, we aren’t playing ANY defense, so it doesn’t really matter.

No one should ever guard Batts. The kid means well, but I haven’t seen him make a three all year. Not saying it hasn’t happened. I just haven’t personally witnessed it.
