MikeParticipant
Yes Bill, not sure about the granddaddy but when you mentioned Gee playing with Cowdog I knew it either had to be the granddad or Cowdog is not as old as I thought (no offense CD). I was there 85-89 and I think Mike Gee was 87-91 or so. I know I was slightly older. Either way, a long line from Williams named Gee.
MikeParticipantNo scientific evidence here against Luckie other than the eyeball test. So I am sitting there watching several games with my sister, one the of the biggest Pack fans ever, and she has no idea what Jamie Luckie looks like.
Yet, watching the games, she will say something like “that guy always calls against us.” Or “why does that guy always call phantom fouls on us?” She picked up on it, and after awhile I said that was Luckie and she started watching him even more closely. Granted she is biased for us, but even she said that guy is a jerk and a crook.
MikeParticipantMike Gee was a friend of mine during school – have lost touch through the years except I know he is still in the Burlington area. I hope Harrison is his son because the Gee’s are good people (and Mike was a tough OL)
MikeParticipantIs the Bitcoin bowl our preferred bowl? No, BUT there are many positives. It is FL, which is a nice place to visit for the team. It helps in recruiting, not just the FL kids, but also others to see they can go to FL at Christmas. it is NOT Detroit, Shreveport, or Boise. Even the Yankee bowl, while it would be cool to be in NYC and play in Yankee stadium is not ideal in December.
St Pete is a great area and will be an enjoyable trip and a reward. The stadium from what I understand is a dog pile but the area will be nice. And considering where we were last year, considering we have a chance to go 8-5, all in all many positives.

12/03/2014 at 11:49 AM in reply to: Football Recruiting: Wrapping Up #Pack15 and a quick look at #Pack16 #64106MikeParticipantClass of 89, I am also an 89 grad. In lising the great WR’s though, how can you leave Holt and Naz Worthen off the list?
Yes, we do have a great tradition of WR’s but this staff has no ties to those guys or that era. However, I think this staff will go out and find those game breaking WR’s in time. One stat I hate to hear an announcer say is “NC State has never beaten XYZ on their field and the last time they played was 30 years ago. Like something that happened 30 years ago on another field is relevant to today. If they say, this team has lost the last 3 times in the last 3 years, then it is a relevant stat since most or many of the players would be involved. Give DD time – he will bring in the athletes we need to run his offense and his programs.
MikeParticipantOh and our defense is vastly improved. I am also tired of people claiming our D is the same as last year – they are getting in people’s faces and playing hard. There are still lapses, and one person missing an assignment hurts all, but overall the D is much improved.
MikeParticipantI read the comments about the game but did not comment last night. With this post, I want to comment again about a couple things:
1. I do not feel we rebounded poorly last night – yes we were outrebounded, but I saw many instances where we had inside position and a long rebound occurred or their bigs went over our back to tap the ball the keep it alive. Frankly I thought we rebounded quite well under the circumstances.
2. We missed a lot of FT’s and everyone wants to point to the coach. Yes, FT’s hurt big time last night, and they work on them in practice. What else is a coach to do?
3. Barber has hurt us all year and seems to be out of control, no good shot selection, and turnover prone. Nothing new here, but this is an area coach can control. Last night could clearly be on Cat but this is a team game, team wins or loses.
4. That call on Turner was absurd. He clearly re-established position in bounds and to say no player touched it first is bogus. I have never heard of that rule and even if it is rule, clearly in the hands of the passer and Turner had already re-entered the court. This did not directly affect the outcome but losing that possession surely hurt.
5. We are still a young team, and while I hate to use that as an excuse, every young team loses on the road, especially early. I saw a stat last night that Duke has lost their last 5 first road games of the year – 5 in a row! Turner is a SR, Lee is a SR (and not playing), Lacey is still under 10 games as a Wolfpacker, and the rest are still Soph and Fr. Give it time, the youth will grow.
We lost the game but it was a good experience to learn. In Lowe’s era we would have been blown out. In HWSNBN era, we would have scored 35 pts and lost badly. Even in years past, the results may not have been this favorable. Yes, a loss is a loss no matter by how many points, but I am actually encouraged by the grit and determination of this team. They did not quit and did not back down.
4.
MikeParticipantGuy wins almost 10 games per year – NEVER won fewer than 9 and is out. What are the lunatics thinking? Where is GDoyle on this? Who would want to take that job?
On a related note, ASU is chopping wood, coming in at 4-2 with 4 cupcake wins and 2 losses to the respectable teams (MD, Bama) they have played. What a joke!
MikeParticipantIf Jacoby is thinking of going pro, would be the biggest mistake this side of Ced Simmons. I am appreciative of the job he has done this year but frankly I dont think he is anywhere on the pro scouts radar.
As for Shad, I would hope not from his perspective. Once again, talking about the radar, I dont think any teams are begging Shad to come out early. RB’s are such a dime a dozen and there is no lucrative financial incentive for Shad. The ONLY reason for him to go early would be legal issues, grade issues, or DD has told him he is no longer welcome in the program. Not saying any of these are issues, but just saying IF would be the only reasons.
MikeParticipantI have stated (pun intended) for some time I see progress being made. Those who do not like DD – sorry but he has been good for us. TOB did us no favors, but the team is making progress. Now, with his spunk, I like the choice even more.
What sticks out to me is after last years game and the fiasco on midfield afterwards, DD said “our guys will remember this for 364 days” and sure enough they did. DD gets the rivalry, and frankly THAT is a guy I want coaching our team.
Yes W’s and L’s are important, but throw them out the window right now. We got blown out at Klempsun and GT, but all the other L’s were winnable games. That is progress, and I even give a pass on GT because we were in that game except for 3 plays in the 2nd Q which took the wind out of us.
DD, thanks for standing up for our team and speaking the truth and leading our young men.
MikeParticipantThanks Grey – there will still be the naysayers and negative Nellie’s but those of who know the game can see the improvement. What an eloquent way of stating it.
MikeParticipantI have been disappointed (very much so) with the lack of Underwood’s use this year. While we dont know the whole story, I expected more contributions from #80 this year. Thanks for a great story about a great young man – stark contrast to the stories we hear up the interstate. Thanks Bryan for being a class act.
MikeParticipantNo question, I heard it also.
MikeParticipantDook is a small school to begin. The student body could not fill WW even as small as it is. They dont attract a lot of local kids, so when they graduate they move back home for jobs (or elsewhere) so they also dont have the alumni base to fill the stadium.
Their best bet is to market to the locals that have no ties to us or UNX, put a quality product on the field and put butts in seats. Groups and kids are the best bet for them to market, hoping the young kids grow up to be fans and continue coming to the games. Even with their “success” the last few years, they just dont have the alumni or fan base to support the football program.
MikeParticipantBlack shirt, red numbers and NC State across the chest. What you see and are asking about are the gloves, when held together at the right angle are a Wolf.
MikeParticipantThanks for posting Grey – I have been saying this all year as well. That was not a bad football team. Frankly they should have beaten GT, ranked #20, and in reality they should have beaten us.
MikeParticipantAs for bowls and TV needing to fill slots – I will watch us in a bowl in TV regardless but if I had no ties to NC State, I would not watch us at 6-6 or 7-5 playing another 6-6 team. Having said that I will not watch about 35 bowls this year.
The cable stations airing these games must realize family members and alumni are the only ones watching and I just cant see how that is profitable for them. Even if several hundred thousand alums are watching, the ratings are dismal.
The benefits to the team though are pretty good. The extra practice time is invaluable. The players get to go to a new city for some fun and sightseeing in a place they may never get to go again. The players get good SWAG even at crappy bowls. All in all it is a positive experience but it sure is not for the money.
MikeParticipantBut Yogi, we live in an era of instant gratification. People want results now and dont understand one about building. Gee, it sure takes time to build a house and does not look like any progress is being made. Why dont we just put up the walls already? What are we waiting on? The trees were cut so put the walls up and let’s get moving. The foundation takes a lot longer to build and unfortunately is not pretty in the process. DD is building that foundation but people want walls, a roof, and interior paint colors.
As a Pack fan for a long time, this is painful but positive steps are being made. Someone who knows the game can see progress being made and the program moving in the right direction.
MikeParticipantAlso, I keep reading everyone saying WF is sure win #6. Dont be too optimistic. This team has no reason to be overconfident nor any margin for error. Yes, we SHOULD win at home against WF but the ball takes funny bounces.
MikeParticipantOnce again, their STRENGTH is our WEAKNESS – any time you match up another strength with your weakness it is never a good thing.
As for JB getting happy feet, that is somewhat true for a couple reasons. First, Cuse was blitzing frequently and often, and we had no counter for it. This JB was scrambling before he even had a chance to look at his progressions, But that leads to the next point – yes now he is panicked even when they dont blitz based on expectation.
The only time I remember a screen being called, which is a great play to slow a blitz, was late Q3 or early Q4. Had a screen set to Dayes on the left side, JB pump fakes it and ate the ball or threw it away, dont remember. The replay then showed a myriad of blue shirts around Dayes so credit JB for not trying to force what would have been a sure pick. Manning, Elway, Marino, Rivers – I dont know what your name is, given the time our QB has had to throw recently – none would be successful given the circumstances. Hopefully that changes this week but expect to see more blitzing because as someone else pointed out, our OL is tired and not much depth.
MikeParticipantTech is tough running the ball – dont pass much but when they do they usually get the big gainers. Our secondary is weak, and just a split second of looking into the backfield for the run and they are toast as the receiver goes running by.
We must stack the box and force them to beat us through the air and hope the corners play the ball. Their backs are big and fast and dont go down on first contact so we need to swarm the ball and gang tackle.
I dont want to be negative Nellie, but of all the games on the schedule, with our poor tackling, this is the one that scared me the most.

<script async=”” src=”//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>Wait just a cotton pickin minute here. So Swoffy says no conference punishments beyond whatever the NCAA does? Is this the same Swoffy who lobbied for Klempsun to get further punishment from the league? Is this the same Swoffy who wanted FSU to get punished for resting softball players? What a complete joke!
10/29/2014 at 5:07 PM in reply to: In the Eyes of a State Fan, Wainstein Offers Redemption for Media #60143MikeParticipantI think that all State fans would relish the imposition of the “Death Penalty” upon UNC, but realistically, while it probably should be imposed, it won’t be. The NCAA has not levied the death penalty on any Division One program since the “Ponygate” incident at SMU in 1987. The severity of the penalty was such that the SMU football program was utterly destroyed , and when they did return to the field, twenty straight losing seasons ensued. The loss of money was devastating for the school at large. The NCAA realized the effects of the death penalty, and it has not doled it out again. The NCAA recently relaxed and lifted the penalties they handed out for the most egregious and disgusting behavior in college football history at Penn State. In light of that, I may be wrong, but unfortunately, I don’t see the death penalty being handed down to UNC. Tis a shame, but I think that the NCAA’s version of “Ole Sparky” will remain empty.
well shame on SMU – I think THAT is hte point of the death penalty. Make the penalty so harsh the schools will not be tempted to cheat. Seems to me the death penalty was just that not just for the period of no games but harsh to build the program up again. For these reasons the NCAA SHOULD give UNX the death penalty – make them suffer for their years of blatant cheating in what has to be the worst cheating scandal in history.
MikeParticipantWolfinVolCountry, Tate needed to go. When talking about divisions in the locker room, Tate would have been the biggest distraction. Without going into details as to why, I will leave it at that.
