MikeParticipant
As for the Gott bashers, where have you been the last couple weeks? This team has come around and grown up. Tonight was an egg but sometimes that happens. Even Archie Miller’s teams have had some eggs this year. For a guy who can’t coach, Gott is 4-2 against Williams, Pitino, Boeheim, and K.
MikeParticipantMartin gave Allen some words – TV cut away right as it was happening. Allen went up for a layup and Martin swatted it out of bounds. Normally I would say that was in bad taste, considering the score – kind of like a UNX DB making a tackle 30 yards downfield and talking trash in a blowout – but Allen certainly deserved it.
Martin started to stare him down but turned away. Then the TV timeout and as the teams were going to their benches, Allen “brushed” against Martin on his way back. Completely low class and intentional, and Martin DID say something at that point. Kudos to Cody.
MikeParticipantI think we match up well with Dook, but still going to be a tough game.
We probably wont get the tightly whistled game (they will we wont) but that would also play to our favor if we do. They have no depth at all and Okafor is still sore on the bum ankle. Jones is also banged up, and if we can get their OLB and pass rusher in foul trouble (Winslow) we have a very good chance.
Of course, we still need to hit our shots, but inside out like last time will help. The boys will be ready to play and I expect them to come out ready. They have the confidence they can beat Dook, and more importantly the swagger. No BC letdowns tonight.
Dook can not handle our strength and size inside and look for big games from Abu and KH, and Freeman is different from when we played earlier. I think Kyle will also factor inside. Barber on Jones on D and Lacey and Cook should help neutralize their games.
MikeParticipantI agree, ACC title over anything less than a final 4.
MikeParticipantwufpup, seriously? how can you question that as an offensive foul? The Penn St player clearly got his body in the way of that Ohio state player’s shove. That is a no brainer offensive foul.
As in the person who called it has no brain.
As I was watching the video before I read the text, I was thinking maybe the officials called a foul on the breakaway, negating the bucket (well in a sense they did) but WOW, just WOW.
MikeParticipantGiven that Arch is a grad, it is nice to see him doing well and if that were the reason this is linked, hooray.
However, given that there are several here who think Arch is the savior of the program WHILE WE STILL HAVE A COACH, this is dirty pool.
We have a date for the prom and we need to dance with our date. We cannot find another date at the prom and hope to go home with the new date.
Do I think Arch will be a good coach? Yes I do
Do I think Arch has potential? Yes I do
Do I think he will make an excellent choice for some larger school in the future? Absolutely I do.
However, in the time period of Archie’s head coaching Gott has a higher winning percentage. Gott has coached in a tougher league against better teams. Gott inherited a program in shambles while Archie inherited a program going strong. I am not saying Gott is a better coach, but I am also not saying Arch would have done any better or worse here. But PLEASE stop this nonsense until we need a new coach. All this speculation does is divide a fanbase and potentially influences recruits that might be concerned their coach is potentially leaving and the program is unstable.
One final point – Arch has a shortage because a couple players transferred out. Some of you criticize Gott for transfers, yet it is OK for Arch to have transfers? And I think we have already discussed the players transferring out from Gott were positive moves for the program.
MikeParticipantNo question, Staats starts on senrio day. It is tradition not just at UNX and Dook as you suggest, but at 99% of the programs across the country (OK I made that up but most).
Walk-ons do not get 4 minutes. They get a minute or maybe the first dead ball, whichever comes last.
The only excpetion I ever remember seeing in all my time watching college bball was Tim Wells senior night and the snub from HWSNBN. I never liked HWSNBN anyway, but this act further cemented my disdain for him as a person and a coach. It is not like Wells was a walk-on either – just a guy who for whatever reason found the bench towards the end of his sr year. The Robby Benson take this job and shove it moment was in the ACCT, somehow we needed a spark and Wells came in and gave us a huge lift, winning us a game or two if memory serves me correctly.

Would much rather be a 10/11 or somehow find a way to stretch to 6/7.10 seed has a better winning percentage in the NCAAT than the 9 seed (and 6-seed does better than the 5’s)
I did not look up the stats so thanks for making my point. When I fill out my bracket I always have several 10-13’s winning round 1 in upsets. I hope we dont end in 8/9.
MikeParticipantRegarding the 8/9 seed – this the worst place to be. Would much rather be a 10/11 or somehow find a way to stretch to 6/7.
8/9 means round 1 playing the other 8/9 in an evenly matched game, with a 1 waiting in the balance. Granted, it looks like Dook and UVA are sitting nicrely for 1’s and we have beaten Dook and gave UVA all they wanted, I still would rather not face them in round 2.
10 means playing a 7, and chances are not a lot of difference in the teams. Win the 10/7 game and you have a 2. Even better is the 11/6 – still fairly evenly matched round 1 and a 3 waiting if you win. 8/9 is usually a death trap seed.
MikeParticipantI absolutely do not like the “no foul out” rule. Learning to play with fouls and foul trouble is part of the game.
One extra FT? If I have a player like TJ or some other consensus AA, of course I want him on the game, and the value of him being there far offsets one additional FT (unless there are 5 seconds left and that extra FT puts the game out of reach). A player with 3 or 4 fouls may not play as aggressively on D, this letting the opponent get an easy bucket. Conversely, if I have 4 fouls and I hack someone, knowing I can stay in the game – no big deal, a hard foul and stop the bucket giving them a chance at the line. Many FT shooters these days percentage wise will miss one of 3 anyway so no big loss AND I stay in the game.
MikeParticipantDont know the truth to the rumor but I like it.
Tardy once and the player suffers. No big deal to others.
Tardy twice and your fellow position players have to run too. No one wants to be the guy to make their teammates run too. It’s called accountability.
Three tardies, and the whole O or D side runs. You know some team leader is going to get in the face of the offender and make sure it does not happen again.
THIS is how programs are built. THIS is how TEAMS are built.
MikeParticipantI wonder how Dayton lost the other night at UMass. UMass is not the power they once were, and are actually sitting at just 11-9 with the win over Dayton. Sorry, enough of the snarky comments.

Would you rather have a team capable of going up double digits and struggling to maintain said lead, or would you rather have a team that cant win at all and goes down double digits every game?
Giving up leads is frustrating, but at least now we are building the leads. Years past we had no chance to blow leads because we were not even getting such leads.
02/02/2015 at 9:34 AM in reply to: Conflict over drafting Russell Wilson kept Bret Bielema from Dolphins #72824MikeParticipantGo back to the archives – I always said RW had “it” and would be given a shot at the NFL because of “it” but I also said he would never be more than a backup/journeyman because of his height. The example I gave was Flutie. Flutie also had “it” and all the guy ever did was win, no matter where he was. But the NFL? Too short they said and never really gave him a chance. Flutie tore it up in the CFL and when he finally got a shot in the NFL, he led his team to the playoffs, only to be replaced the next year because he was too small.
I am thrilled to see RW doing well and excelling but I just not believe he would be given a fair chance at the next level. Glad I was wrong.
MikeParticipantInteresting article, but this type of scenario is happening more frequently to other teams as well. Just Saturday UNX was up 18 and loved to them blow that lead. I was happy to see the times we came back – when I saw the headline I thought it was going to be another hack the coach job.
Let me take this one step further though – so we have had a few leads that we have blown. How many times did we have an 18 point lead in the Lowe era? Or the HWSNBN era?
Would I like to see us finish these leads? Of course! But frankly, the fact we can build a big lead is positive – unlike eras of the past where we had no chance.
MikeParticipantGlad he is staying as I think we have a big upside. However, every single one of us would listen if a recruiter comes calling. Have nothing to lose and might end up in a better spot. I am very happy in my job and profession but I listen when a recruiter comes calling. I listen, decide the new chance is not even close to what I have, and I politely say thanks but no thanks. But always listen at least for a minute.
MikeParticipantAnd by all means I am not insulting Archie Miller. I like Archie, always have back to the days before he came to State. I wish him very well. I just get tired of people assuming he is the answer of answers.
MikeParticipantI am not talking about K and his first 3 years. I am talking K now and the last few.
MikeParticipantWe can either be happy with a state of constant bubble satching or try to get better. Gott has a long history (not just 3 1/2 years) in which I base my assumption.
If you like where we are I understand, it is better than the Lowe days. But it is not where I want our program to be.Actually, I am frustrated and I dont want to be on the constant bubble. But I also think some continuity is a necessity. Constant change and flux does not help, and even the indecision and bickering affects the future. Does that next AA want to come here knowing the coach is on the hot seat?
We have the greatest fans but there is a reason “they” call us the lunatic fringe. We would have run K out of town too based on the last 2 weeks of their games. And K has struggled in the early NCAA’s too – get rid of K! Support our guy and let’s help him get better.
MikeParticipantTo continue since I did not want to put all in one rant:
Many of you want Gott gone and think Archie is the savior. I like Archie and wish him well but you have absolutely no idea how he would do in this league. Archie lost the other night to the 5th place team in the league by 17 points, blown out 77-60. How can he be a good coach getting blown out by the 5th place team in a weaker conference?
I will take this one step further – I was NOT, never was a Sendek fan. I was happy to see him gone and should have been gone long before he was. And while we say we dont really care what the media thinks, we do, because it is public perception and affects us in recruiting, reputation, and many other factors. Sendek walks away after 5 straight seasons and we are crucified in the media. We go to Lowe, and cant even sniff the tourney. Bring in Gott and 3 straight tourney appearances overcoming chemistry issues and head cases all 3 years, and now we are ready to run another coach out the door??? Who in their right mind would want that lunacy? An up and comer like Archie might, but what is in the back of his mind if there is one year where there are struggles? Get rid of Gott and let’s say Archie says no? THEN who comes in?
It’s amazing to me how the grass is always redder on the other side of the fence with the unknown. I am sorry, Archie is still an unknown entity. Or better yet, let’s look at previous Dayton coaches – they might be available.
* One coach had a 120-68 record (.638 winning pct) over his last 6 years there. Who wants Oliver Purnell?
* One coach had a 172-94 record (.646 winning pct) in 8 years there. Who wants Brian Gregory?
* Archie is 63-37 (.630 winning pct) in his first 3 years. It is not like Archie took over a bad program. In fact, Dayton wom 20 games the previous 4 years before Archie took over, and won 19 the 5th year before. I would venture to say the program has regressed just slightly in Archie’s time but nevertheless the percentage speaks for itself. Archie may be doing a great job and may end up being a great coach but dont put all your eggs in an unknown basket. By the way, just for fun, Gott’s winning percentage over the same 3 years as Archie is .648.
MikeParticipantEveryone step away from the ledge. Yes, I was disappointed in the loss last night and I do not believe in moral victories.
I find it amazing how everyone seems to know our team better than the coaches who spend every day with the players. One person will comment that “we need to play Cat more and that will solve everything” while another will say “how dumb can MG be for playing Cat?” We need to play the twins more and the twins are overmatched. We need to have a more “settled line up and rotation” compared to “we need to mix it up more and bench so and so so that so and so can play.”
I dont understand Gott’s rotation or sub patterns. Guess what – it is not us to US to determine that! Why did so and so play or why did so and so not play? Maybe Gott and the coaches are trying to exploit a potential mismatch, or maybe so and so had the flu. Unless you know why, give the coaching staff some credit. How would you like it if someone came to your work from outside and thought they knew more about your job than you do?
Yes, this is a public forum and open to all comments. Gott sees the same issues we all see, and he is trying to find solutions. THAT is why you see different rotations and patterns, that is why you might see something that does not make sense to you, but seemed like a good fit in practice so let’s try it in a game situation.
MikeParticipantI was not talking one and dones at Duke, I am talking players who transfer. K has had a boatload of straight transfers.
As for K having more success with one and dones pakfan, I disagree. Since K started going that route, Duke has not fared as well. Last championship for Duke was 2010, on a senior heavy team. The one and dones are the cause of the early exits.
MikeParticipantIf transfers out are an indicator of good coach/bad coach, has anyone counted the number of players leaving Durham? I would venture to say there are more transfers out of Durham than Raleigh. K should be fired, how can he build a program losing a player or two every year?
MikeParticipantI posted this in the other forum thread but since the topic of fouls and FT’s is discussed, it seems very relevant here as well.
One of the stats to look at is something I was reviewing earlier and what Wolfson was saying. When the fouls occur and what kind of fouls are called is an interesting concept.
ND was called for 14 fouls and we shot only 12 FT’s.We were called for 20 fouls and they shot 24 FT’s. Granted, more fouls means more time at the line with the bonus, but it seems all the fouls we commit are shooting fouls and the fouls others commit and non-shooting fouls.
Miami was called for only 10 fouls and we shot 4 FT’s.
We were called for 21 fouls and they shot 21 FT’s.
FSU was called for 16 fouls, and several of those were end of game catch up fouls. We shot 18 FT’s.
We fouled FSU 21 times and they shot 30 FT’s.
I dont have time to do a full statistical analysis (nor am I qualified) but the last 3 games are as follows:
NC State 62 fouls – opponents shoot 75 FT’s or 1.2 FT’s per foul.
Opponents 40 fouls – we shoot only 34 FT’s or .85 FT’s per foul. The fact that the fouls are 62/40 is interesting but the FT’s taken per foul is interesting as well.
The other thing that cannot be measured is the timing of the fouls. Duke several years ago is a prime example – we are way up, the zebras start calling ticky tack fouls on us and the whole complexion of the game changes. Same thing has happened this year on several instances, which takes away the agressiveness on D amd forces us to play passive and scared. Then when other teams can press us and no fouls are called, we start to get tight (of course) and they get away with steals that could be fouls.
I AM NOT A CONSPIRACY THEORIST. John Clougherty is family friend and his sons went to State. But tendencies are observed, and our tendencies seem to get us in trouble rather than watching the actual play.
