Wulfpacker said – And lastly, there is a big difference between racism and stereotypes. There is a power element to racism – it’s about superiority. A stereotype is simply acknowledging differences in groups of people, and sort of lumping them together. There is no power element there, you are just over generalizing. Racism is all about trying to keep others down based purely on ethnicity.

Wulf, you are so right and yet misguided. There IS a big difference between racism and stereotypes, but as soon as one stereotypes and says “all blacks, all indians, all orientals etc” they are immediately labeled a racist.

As I have previously stated Sterling gives pigs a bad name and frankly does not deserve the privilege of owning a team. But to be punished for his thoughts……….

D-Day, exactly on the checkered past. That is my whole beef with this – this event is not something new to anyone in the NBA. Everyone has known for years Sterling was a pig. So why now?

This should have been done years ago. Maybe the Clippers were the laughing stock of the league so they let it go? There was an article in SI a few years ago about it, that no matter how hard they tried, because of Sterling they were always going to be stuck in mediocrity. Sterling was a pig then, is still a pig, and frankly, gives pigs a bad name. But all of a sudden the Clippers are winning so now is the time to force him out?

WOW, for once I actually agree with packalum44. Did he/she leave his/er computer on and someone wrote using his/her name?

Here are some answers to his questions.
1 – Spike Lee – still employed by the NBA (although Spike is not an owner he is league employee)
2 –
3 – I am not racist but everyone at one point has sterotyped a group or race of people
4 – Sterling was about to receive his 2nd NAACP award. Yes, he contributes to society with his donations and support of causes. And yes his past actions have been known and pretty much very racist.
5 – I dont like Obamacare, but if I say so publicly I am branded a racist. I dont like Obamacare because I think the plan is awful, not because I am racist.
6 – By definition, racism is any objection based strictly on racial lines/bias so yes, racism should be considered both ways. But we know it is not.
7 – Charles Barkley has stated on TV “I hate white people”. We know it was Charles and his schtick and we take it tongue in cheek.

Because one makes bad choices to enter the NBA draft means very little. Ced Simmons, Josh Powell should never have gone early, and they went after 2 (not the one and done as the survey suggests). Calvin and Lo should have stuck around another year. Who told these guys to leave early?

Yes, they are talented, but talent does not always equate to wins. Chemistry is just as important as talent, and when a team is loaded with talent only looking out for #1 there are going to be issues. Someone explain how Word of God with CJ, John Wall, and Dez Wells on the roster has a barely .500 record? Frankly I was always a little concerned with CJ for this reason – how that team did not steamroll people was beyond me.

I could not link the original article for some reason, but I think the point of this thread is we have talent so are we not winning more? HWSNBN and Lowe are 2 good reasons – they were not able to develop that talent. Simmons and Powell left because of HWSNBN. We dont even need to discuss Sid.

Most “experts” will say a player makes the most improvement between the freshman and sophomore years. While I dont have bundles of stats and information to support, I tend to agree. IF this is the case, expect big jumps from Cat, Frenchie, KH, and KW. Even looking back at the past season, those 4 were vastly improved from start to finish, and we can expect an equal improvement over the summer into next fall.

Cat had improved decision making, developed some confidence in the J, and was already a check down defender. If I were an opposing PG, I would not want Cat guarding me all night.

Frenchie came in as a 17 year old boy and left an 18 year old man. His confidence grew and his aggressiveness went through the roof the last part of the year. He’s got the body and look for big things with the confidence and aggressiveness factor multipled even more for next year.

KH – continune losing the weight – he was already a force to be reckoned with but give him some stamina and a little lighter afoot and he will be scary good.

KW – see Frenchie above. He was not afraid to take the big shot and will only get better. Big body and he was somewhat passive early, maybe because he earned Howell’s no touch fouls early. As the season progressed, he was also more aggressive (going to get called anyway, might as well make them worth the whistle) and this is a positive moving forward.

Des – while not a sophomore, he is entering his 2nd year in the program and expect vast improvement here as well. He actually developed his 3 pt shot late and has good D capability. For a long time he was our best defender and the guy we would put on their best player. This will also improve.

Expect big things from all these guys and while we will miss TJ, the more we played as a team last year the more effective we were. We will have to play as a team next year, and if so, we will be dancing again.

Wufpacker, I also had great seats that day. We were one of the first in line but……….

It was over Christmas break and the idea was to be general admission for all, take your pick. We all filed in, found our seats and then we had to more b/c the big wig donors got mad. I dont remember why this was a GA game to be honest but all I remember is V and Dickie V lobbying to let us keep our seats. Of course, we had to move.

I would be very cautious of a Manning hire and think he would be good for Wake. If he flops, it is Bzzzz pt 2. But with the big name, he could be a draw for the kids and maybe the guy can coach. He is from Greensboro initially so he is coming home. If I am Wellman, I think this is a slam dunk.

Mr. Dog…
Basically… that’s right…

In more detail…
Ten percent out of 12 or 13 players on the roster… roughly equals 4 transfers every 3 years… unless there’s a way to transfer less than a whole player… (No bubbleguts jokes… please)…

Then… we need to know whether or not a Coaching change in in play or not… everybody agrees, I think, these teams have higher transfer rates during the transition period and need to be viewed separately…

Now if we are just talking about schools with coaching continuity…
Then… let’s draw a line in the sand … and say…

1. If a school is averaging 1 transfer or less every two years… they clearly don’t have the same problems a lot of other teams have… (think Dook, maybe, for one… )…

2. If a school is averaging 2 or more each year…. they got “the problem” bad… and need to head to the ICU… (think UCLA just a couple seasons ago…)…

3. And everybody else is more or less ‘normal’… whatever ‘normal’ is… these days…

That said… the number of transfers in any one year could vary significantly and should be evaluated with some skepticism without clear evidence to the underlying causes… and probably ought not be used as a baseline to extrapolate a trend or pattern…

Then as you suggest… any other “conclusions”… would most likely NOT warrant serious consideration… Repeated offenses could definitely erode that person’s credibility.

So Bill you exclude Dook – but how many transfers have the Dookies had? Without the numbers in front of me, I think they average one per year. Should we be concerned about the Dook program and K’s leadership too?

Officiating is difficult with the size and speed of the players – I get that. Maintaining consistency should not be difficult. If it is not a foul in the 1st half, it should not be a foul in the 2nd.

I cant stand the new charge/block rule – if an offensive player is out of control and goes barreling into the lane or a defender, initiates contact, the foul should not be on the defense. Either a charge or a no-call. I noticed how other teams seemed to do that against us and more often than not a foul on us. If we did that same move, the no-call was the norm.

The moving/illegal screen is ridiculous. It is a RULE, call it. The player cannot move into the screen, nor move while in the screen. So often you see the sliding hip check through the screen. Call it. Would slow the first few games to a crawl but soon coaches and players will learn it will be called. After 2 weeks a non-issue.

Finally, wrestling is ruining the game. I quit watching the NBA years ago because it was nothing but a wrestling match. The college game has become the same, but for some reason still watching. Once again, clean up the wrestling and we will have a better game. Will be brutal at first but once again, after about 2 weeks it will change. Dont tell me the talent level is such that the physical nature of the game has taken over. Olajuwon, Ewing, Sampson, Mullin, Bird, Duncan, Robinson, Johnson – the list could go on – the players today are not that much different than the legends. Watch the 83 finals again – where has that game gone?

I am not concerned with the transfers for a couple reasons, but let’s look at them:

Purvis – wanted to be THE man and was not ready to be THE man. Got beat out for his position and left for immediate (sitting out a year immediate) gratification. Also an attitude and locker room distraction so good riddance.

Lewis – love the hustle, the court IQ, but the skills were not there to be the starter. He wants to leave to get some PT and either he saw the writing on the wall OR Gott told him Cat was going to be the man moving forward. Can’t blame him.

Harris – Was an add-on when we needed bodies. Was not going to be a superstar. Dad also thought he should have been the go-to guy. Dad was a big problem. Another cancer in the locker room so good riddance.

Raymond – see Harris above, not going to get much PT at this level. Averaged 6.5 PPG at Middle Tennessee.

DeThaey – who knows how much PT he would have gotten. Nice body to bang inside but not sure if the skills were suitable for D-1. No harm especially since he seemed to also be a locker room problem.

In each case except Tyler, these are additions by subtraction. In Tyler’s case, maybe Gott encouraged him to go elsewhere where he would get more pt. Maybe Tyler decided on his own.

BJD we have ONLY 2 ball handlers next year (and I haven’t seen Trevor’s handles frankly)…this isn’t a *shrug* type of loss. We lost UNC and Cuse’ GAME last year b/c we didn’t handle the ball well in late game situations. This is a game of inches and losing key starters HURTS.

This just further reinforces my analysis of Gott. Enjoy bubble teams and using Chipotlaway b/c we’re going to have lots of dirty undies over the next several years.

Yeah, well Tyler can handle the ball but could not beat the press. End of game against St.L Tyler hurt us. Not fast enough to beat with the dribble and not big enough to pass out of it.

hate to see him go but seems to me Cat was going to PG next year and Tyler saw his PT at another school.

How does one give up 8 unearned runs??????

Obviously we cant catch the ball or throw it – then you mention we are 4th in the conference in fielding %. While I know a 2 out error that opens the floodgates makes all the runs unearned but still, Rodon has given up 23 runs, only 10 of which are earned. This % is unheard of.

Gott’s first class was a last minute scramble for bodies. Both of the transfers were not ACC caliber players but Lowe was a nightmare and Gott had to grab what he could, what was left over. To say Gott has only one recruit left is meant to be a slam on Gott but frankly those kids needed to transfer for their own PT.

Watch Dez next year – I think he will be tough. The year from JUCO to D-1 is always an adjustment, but he will be a 4th year player, senior leader, and will have made the adjustment to know what works and what does not.

He showed big improvement over the course of the year and I love his attitude. He will play tough D and I expect will surprise a lot of people next year.

Thank you Dr. Wufette, well spoken/written.

For those saying we need a new coach, Shaka Smart also lost tonight. Fire him, he was a 5 seed and lost to a 12. Sorry, I cannot let it go, all those complaining about Gott. Gott gott us to 3 tourneys in a row and the future is bright. Is it perfect? No – but the sun is shining, unlike several Les, HWSNBN, Sid years.

Coach K is a terrible coach. How can Duke lose to Mercer? Fire the coach and hire Archie! K had no idea how to counter what Mercer was throwing at him, so fire the coach.

No Rick, I dont think we should not comment if we dont know more. I am just saying we should not be bashing the coach. We were not out-coached last night to the point it cost us the game. Crews probably is a good coach (he played for Knight) but we did not execute down the stretch. Flat out, we did not execute, and THAT was why we lost.

I disagree, if this was a one time event sure I could lay it on the players but this has been a consistent problem with Gott teams. The coach is the one who recruits them and teaches them and prepares them. It is his responsibility when this happens. He also makes the decisions on who plays and what to do. Last night I saw a coach who had no idea what to do.

Perfectly fine to disagree and we can. I am proud of the job Gott did with this team – hence my breakdown of what he had with his roster in an earlier post.

Rick, you and I agree that we were in a position to win 3 other games this year, only to see zebras take them away. We put ourselves in position to win last night, and we choked, bricked, whatever you want to call it our FT’s. But the entire body of work, the improvement over the course of the year, is all commendable. I think a lesser coach does not put us even remotely close to those 3-4 other winnable position games.

Wake will never be the powerhouse in football – a big season here or there but not even Grobe could make them the powerhouse. So basketball is their best bet to make a big name for the school, and basketball has been there before.

The point of my comment above is Wake should open the checkbook and spend for b-ball. Howland has been an absolute nightmare at UCLA in terms of management and team unity. Smart is not necessarily seeking the bucks – he could have had that already somewhere else. I dont think he leaves VCU unless it is an elite program calling. Will be an interesting search though.

Rick, you are right, this is where we discuss NC State athletics, and usually we do it better than most. I have been on this site since the early beginning, all the way back to O’Cain days. I get frustrated too with our teams but I also know it is fruitless to bash the coach. We may not understand this decision or that decision he makes, but he sees the big picture, knows the different variables.

Are the coaching decisions always right? No, sometimes they dont work. But I guarantee Gott knows more about the game and our team than any of us, probably all of us combined. My point is, if WE are all such great coaches, why are we not coaching?

This comment is the most absurd comment I have seen. TJ constantly made poor decisions on D, reaching, swatting, and putting himself in position to pick up cheap fouls.

No way the coaches said “TJ, foul quickly as soon as they inbound the ball so you can watch your career end on the bench.”

That foul was all on TJ. Granted, he was trying to win the game, but plenty of time left for someone else to foul. That is on TJ and only TJ.

Last comment for now – for all the wanna be coaches. Try on these shoes:
* You have 1 senior, a little used for 4 years not dependable foul machine
* The back-up is a freshman, comes into camp 80 lbs overweight and has little stamina
* You have one returning player who could score, who often sulked and had a me-first attitude
* Your PG is small, but sees the floor well but not a lot of quickness and is a defensive liability
* Your other PG who you hope takes over is a freshman, out of control and overwhelmed by the size of D-1
* Your starting PF is a freshman
* Your backup PF is a freshman, and 17 years old to boot
* Your shooting guard is a transfer, and while practicing for a year, is still an unknown
* Your other shooting guard is a JUCO transfer with good numbers, but how does that translate to D-1?
* You lost more scoring than probably any other team in NCAA with Howell, Wood, Brown, and CJ leaving
* You are picked preseason to finish at the bottom of the league

What would all of you do with this team?

What did Gott do with this team?
* Went 9-9 in conference, and realistically could/should have been 12-6
* Took this team to the tournament when none of us preseason really thought we had a shot
* Put this team in a position to advance in the tourney
* Made this group into a team that was fun to watch and NEVER GAVE UP (until OT last night)
* Developed KW and LF into players that will be good next year
* Worked with Cat to help develop some control, vast improvement from Day 1 to now.
* Continued recruiting and working his tail off to bring in the talent to take us to the next level

Have I misstated anything? You cannot rely on freshman. Kansas and the great Wiggins went 24-9. Duke and the great Parker were 26-8. Kentucky and Randle (and the others) were 24-10. Conversely, we lost to a team with 5 seniors, who are currently 27-6. Even the great Archie Miller (I am thrilled Miller won yesterday) lost to St Louis, in Dayton no less.

I am sorry for stating facts but I think if God Himself were our coach many of you would complain. Is Gott perfect? No, absolutely not. Find me the coach that is. Even V had coaching flaws. Even K has coaching flaws.

Coach Gott, thanks for what you have done so far, and we look forward to more in the future. Debbie Yow, thanks for hiring Gott and giving him the chance to lead our team.
