ParticipantI knew Harry through business connections. Harry took me into that building back in 01-02, I thought the world of Harry but lost all contact with him about 11 years ago.
Very interesting story: I’m a freshman at State. I’m watching WRAL news and they are running a story about the principal at East Wake High School pulling a gun on some students. The principle is being interviewed and he has on a white cowboy hat and a shiny NASCAR jacket.
The story slips into my memory since I have no reason to care.
Move up to 01-02. I meet Harry and we are talking history, politics, agriculture, etc and I ask him what he did in education.
“Principal” he says.
“Where” I ask.
“East Wake” he says.
“When did you retire, why did you retire?”, I ask.
“We there was a volleyball practice and some boys were drinking and went into the girls dressing room. One of the girls came to find someone and she found me and told me what was happening.” Harry said.
“Well what did you do?” I asked.
“There were 5 of them and they said they’d whip my a$$ so I said come on out to the parking and see what you can do.” Harry continued, “They didn’t realize I had a shotgun behind the seat of my truck so when we got out there they started toward me and I pulled the gun. One of the little a$$holes crapped in his pants and they ran.”
Now my deep memory is kicking in.
“I saw you on WRAL 12-13 years ago, you had on a white cowboy hat”.
And Harry said, ” and a shiny NASCAR jacket”.
“Hell yes”, I said.
“Held my news conference at the Knightdale fertilizer dealership and would have gotten away with it if one of those little chicken sh.its hadn’t told his momma.”
Hell’va story.
I was reading a book on Danville Harry gave me the other day.
Yes bill, I know everyone.

ParticipantI stopped eating at Zack’s after I found out he was a unc fan.
Hmmmm…..sounds like you are from up around Prospect Hill.
Ever go in the old store there? Spiral stair case, post office was in there and the place is locked in time.
Do you know Harry Stanfield?

ParticipantKnow the area well. In fact just after you leave Ramseur heading east and take Hwy 49 toward Liberty there was an old shack on the right with “Weber State 76 unc 74” sprayed painted on the side.
Just before you cross Whites Chapel Rd, I think.

ParticipantI see the prose you are trying to put together but in reality it is more like the grand opening of a Roses store in north Asheboro in 1975.
Sounds great, looks good, excitement in the air etc until WC Nooe takes a dump in the middle of the parking lot.
True story.

ParticipantI WOULD point out that Herbie was the same. I sat in Charlotte at an ACC Tourney circa 1999 or 2000 and watched Duke, whom we had on the ropes, totally destroy us and win (JJ Reddick set a new ACC Tourney Record…I THINK). Herbie had NO answer. We had NOT practiced “Junk Defenses” and he never saw it coming.
That was in damn Greensboro and Josh Powell was killing it.

ParticipantMac,how would you know? Not everyone is a 1st class a hole ,(like you), WPC members want to be loyal. They are looking for success.
State athletics are a laughing stock generally speaking, an after thought to most.(get out of NC and you’ll be very aware of this)
WPC members are very loyal and they have been taken for a big ol’ fat ride. I’m not sure what there is to be loyal toward and the return on their investment might be the worst in the nation. Every damn move made by the school alienates the alumni. From the initial move to Carter Finley (which took alumni off campus-big NO NO) to the stupid a$$ move to the PNC which TOOK ALUMNI OFF CAMPUS to screwing with people at tailgating, etc nobody makes it harder on their fans for so damn little in return.
Thank you for calling me a 1st class a$$hole. When someone tells me that in such serious discussions like State’s (lack of) athletic prowess then I’m hitting gold.

ParticipantAthletic department revenue outperforms on-field performance for the same reason ESPN’s revenue is higher than it should be. People are paying for a product they don’t use. Donors (subscribers) who give blindly every year no matter how well or poorly the teams perform. Eventually that bubble will burst and we will be left with a penniless and irrelevant athletics department.
The last part is half right.
The athletic department is already irrelevant.
People will always give because they like having their name in a magazine, on a wall or on a building.

ParticipantHey bill,
Do you watch State because:
1) it is a habit?
2) you love the school that much?
3) are a loser and have no leaves to rake in the yard?
4) you thrive on failure?I’m interested in the mind set of a masochist.
You can’t be enjoying what you are watching.

ParticipantI have reverted to a “Sidney Lowe” type of apathy. I actually watched Big Bang Theory reruns instead of the game. It has become so bad, that if I come across a State game on the weekend while surfing; I will watch for a moment and then move on… no matter the score. I have better things to do with my time, even though I really like the kids on this team. (Bona fides: I am a State grad, I bleed red, I hate UNC and I bought an F150 because it was State Red and my block S license plate would look great on it.)
I didn’t know anyone watched Big Bang Theory. The beta male nature of the characters and the not so subtle homosexual vibes make that show reek of the the last spin of the gene pool going down the toilet.

ParticipantSome of us need to stick to things we know about like Instant Noodles and other such non-sense.
I see you there!
I’ll match my knowledge of instant noodles against State’s ability to hire properly any day of the week.

ParticipantMy apathy is running at full blast 11 right now. I was aware of the game last night but didn’t bother turning on the TV until late in the second half. I fully expected our team would be down 10 points. I was pleasantly surprised to see us up by 7. Then I learned we were up by double digits and were right in the middle of a total collapse. As the game and lead dwindled down. I kept feeling the crushing disappointment of missed freethrows. When time ran out and overtime began, I turned off my TV because I could already see the game was lost. I may not watch basketball the rest of this season. I’m so done with watching this “dumbster fire.”
Let me tell you about a place of peace and tranquility. It is a place of quiet and a sense of doom doesn’t pervade the air.
So you ask, “where is this place?”.
It is not far away. Take the first left, go 1/2 mile and stop at the sign that says “Couldnt Give a S.hit USA”.
Life is good here and they don’t serve decaf.
