I used to have a link to these types of numbers, but I’ve since lost it. Can you post where you got the raw numbers? BTW, I really appreciate all of the analysis from you and the others on these types of topics.

Does anyone have a vine or video of the illegal “pick” Meeks “set” for Paige on Paige’s last 3? The TV had a great down-the-court shot of Meeks extending both arms which pushed our guy into Barber (?) which tripped him and gave Paige the open look. Again, not a cause for the loss, but would like to see that one again.

Thank you for putting these together. And thank you, VaWolf82 for that last set of information as well. So, we beat who we were supposed to beat and lost to who we were supposed to lose to…I’ll take that for a second year coach.

Would like to see our SOS get better, but that should come as we as a team get better and schedule better opponents along with that progression.

Worth the whole article for that last line! Love that they are a punchline not just for us, but for more national guys as well.

Thank you for the response. Yeah, we saying the same thing on that second point. I just wasn’t clear in how I was asking it. I can’t see the NCAA giving Hess a game involving an ACC team either this year, but at some point, that could be difficult to avoid if we have 5-6 teams in the tourney and it’s not like if one of our teams wins the Friday game the NCAA is going to fly him out before the Sunday game he is supposed to ref just so he isn’t doing an ACC game. We’ll see, but I thought that the ACC’s ban has no bearing on the NCAA tourney. Thanks for confirming that.

Real question here: Is it still possible for him to ref an NCAA tourney game where an ACC team is involved? It probably wouldn’t happen this year, but is it at all possible?

Along those lines, if we played another conference at home, it’s their conference’s refs that call the game. Is that correct? And if so, could Hess still call an ACC game on their court?

I will have to throw my hat into the pile of those who don’t prefer to watch this “brand” of basketball. We did not lose because of the officiating, for sure. But it is not fun to watch our guys get mauled all night. That’s not the type of basketball I grew up watching and still prefer to watch.

With that said, I was most frustrated with GOTT in this game. I did not understand why he basically did not substitute in the final 4+ minutes until the very end, when it didn’t matter. And I don’t know why KW was even out there. I’m not a basketball snob, and so I admit I may have missed it, but I couldn’t see what he added on either end of the floor most all game. I know they were pressing, but I still would have rather had Anya out there for D inside. Every time WV drove, it’s like they had a free lane when Abu and KW were in.

And I do not understand how D1 players do not know that they should not go to the corner (and especially pick up their dribble) against a trapping team. But even if they do, shouldn’t we have somebody moving to get open? Seems like basketball 101 that I learned when I was very young. I know that we seemed to have agreed on this site not to overreact to each game as if the issues we saw in this one game will cement our team as “this is who they are” for the whole season, but some things do continue to frustrate game after game, and season after season. Like, why can my wife walk into the room and having only watched a few minutes go, “Why is everyone just standing around on offense?” Fellas, that shouldn’t happen.

We are playing like we deserve to be down this much, but I still don’t understand the fumble for a TD. The ball clearly hit the ground which caused the fumble. Is the “ground can’t cause a fumble” not a rule in college football? Just a question more for my knowledge than a complaint about the officiating.

Can someone explain the Past and Future Opposition numbers? We just played a 4-0 team. And when I go back and look at our past opposition, they are a combined 14-9 on the season. And for future opposition, we have 7 more games against teams that have played either 4 or 5 games, so shouldn’t their combined record be between 28-35 games total?

I’m sure there’s an easy explanation, and I know WV Wolf is compiling these for us from the NCAA (which means they’re probably throwing out UNC’s bad numbers), but any assistance would be helpful.

94Wolfpack, I think that a couple of numbers got shifted in the report. It should be:

    4th Down Pct Defense: 71.4% (11, 94)
    Red Zone Defense: 80.0% (9, 50)

    Hope this helps.

^ Nice. I enjoyed the tie in to the current thread with a little bit of humor. Needed that this morning.

I have really enjoyed the conversation so far, but please don’t throw out names like Leach and definitely not Logan. I really like DD’s attitude so far. I would not listen to a single presser if Logan were our coach. I realize that’s personal preference, and I don’t know him personally, but I prefer the attitude (at least right now) of DD and the way he carries himself.

Love the discussion and that we are generally being realistically positive (seemingly realistic expectations, by our standards of realistic anyway).

I like the upgrade terminology in this discussion as opposed to an outright firing because the coach stinks. I think this is a better way to frame what many people (myself included) are trying to convey. Has he reached his ceiling, we’ll see. Gott may only have been here for 3 years, but his coaching style and abilities can be tracked back to all of his years at Alabama. Most of us are not simply commenting on the 3 years – with some very big highs (Sweet 16 in first year, handling of CJ/Calvin in year 1) but also with some frustrating lows (defense, handling of CJ/Calvin and the rest of the team in year 2, fundamentals, breaking the press, just stinking getting the ball in bounds).

I guess my fear, against what Rowdy is saying, is that it’s unconventional to upgrade a coach unless he has been really under-performing. So, unless Gott gets an offer for a bigger job (which I don’t think even the people that love him here think is coming), we will wait until we decline before looking for another coach. So, I don’t think, Rowdy, that it’s a guarantee that this job will be more appealing to a bigger name coach at that point, the point where we’ve sunk back down for the past few seasons. Again, it may not play out like that. But that is my fear with the coaching situation, especially how it looks like so many schools around us ARE getting upgrades. Time will tell.

I have never said that I want to fire GOTT and look for another coach. But I don’t think it’s crazy that many of us see this as his ceiling either. He did do a pretty good job with the youth that we have this year. But not much defense and lack of fundamentals are not something that is likely to change. He has been a head coach for a good amount of time now that it is reasonable to expect the same out of him based on his previous coaching style/abilities.

With that said, I also don’t think it’s crazy to want one of our own (who looks to be an excellent coach – just listen to him interview) back here coaching us as, what we would hope, a lifetime coach. GOTT is not that guy, but Archie could be. I agree that Yow wouldn’t do it, because GOTT was her guy (or at least 5th or 6th guy on the list) and because it goes against the social norm, but I would be most pleased if we could land Archie. Again, I don’t want to fire GOTT and look for another coach. I would be happy to fire GOTT only if it was because we were hiring Archie.

^ and that’s another reason to nail down a good coach within the next few years. If Gott is the guy, then great. But once those jobs come open, we’ll need to already know who we have.

I feel like I should add that I’m not anti-Gott. I like a lot of the recruiting he’s been able to do considering where our basketball program has been. I like some of the exposure he’s given to our program. I just don’t think he can take us up another level. I’ll be happy to be wrong. There are just some guys you listen to in interviews and watch on the sidelines and you can just get a sense as to whether they are a guy that you believe can take you where you want to go. A lot of guys interview badly (public speaking and all) and you still can tell they know their stuff. I just don’t get that when I listen and watch GOTT. Never have. He is what we thought when he came, good not great. We were better than 10th in the ACC this year, but what do you think we’ll be projected next year after Warren leaves? At some point, the trajectory has to change. I like that we are bottom-feeders, but not sure he can get us over the hump. Again, I’ll be happy to be proven wrong and will root for GOTT and the team like I always have….even though it hurts a lot of the time.

And I wanted to add, this is not a reaction to last night. This just seems to be the right time to talk about it since the season is now officially over. It’s pretty common to talk about coaching job and performances shortly after seasons end, even if it is a pipe dream. No way Yow fires GOTT within the next couple of years, as long as we’re mediocre (and yes, the last two years have been mediocre, even if we did make the tournament both years).

I too am worried about losing Archie. We missed on his older brother and I think we’ll miss on him too. No way we let GOTT go before Archie takes a better job. GOTT recruits well and has gotten us to 3 straight NCAA tourneys. I think we’re at his ceiling and have thought that for a while. Undisciplined teams that don’t do fundamentals well can only go so far. He is not a great in-game coach and it has showed many many times this year. And no, I don’t think our lack of defense or fundamentals falls to an assistant. You get assistants to assist you in preparing how you see fit and how you want to focus your team. They may have more experience and be better at teaching certain principles, but the direction and focus of the team is still on the head coach.

Also, if they’re smaller, could we see some Cat and Lewis in there tonight? Don’t want to take the ball out of Lewis’ hand right now, but really need Cat’s quickness on D and driving the lane.

Is it just me or is anyone else not like the fact that we are the trendy pick? I know they limped to the finish, but I’m not sure 1-4 is enough of a decline for me to feel confident. 3-9 or something like that would tell me more. And I never like picking against a good team that lost in the first round of their tournament. They’ll be ready to play even more. I know they play in a weaker conference, but if our boys have been listening to the media and overlook this game even a little bit to Louisville, we’re going home early. Guarding against lots of screens has not been our strong suit this year, but I have enjoyed the increased focus on D the last few games.

Like the last several games, if we stay focused on BOTH ends of the floor for a full 40 minutes, we should be fine.

I get what you mean about the hot potato, but I really liked seeing that quick decision-making and passing. I was watching a couple of the ACCT games with my father-in-law who hasn’t watched a bunch of State games this year. He kept asking me why we didn’t move and pass that quickly on offense all of the time because we seem to be getting better looks out of it.

I realize you can’t take end-of-shot-clock offense too far, it did seem like it opened the door for cutters and shooters because we didn’t give the defense time to catch their guy if he got free. I don’t think the only type of up-tempo offense has to come from fast breaks. With a heady PG and a couple of slashers on the floor at the same time (Warren, Dez, Cat), I think we could have done this a bit more this year, even as a change of pace. It feels like over half of our possessions are going down to the 12 to 10 secs left on the shot clock. This is good clock management some times, but it’s not too bad to change it up some either to catch the D napping.

^ I have been thinking that as well. Vandy is a pretty good passer and at the ACCT, his shot looked pretty good. Also really liked what we did in the first game of the ACCT that had Turner not simply shooting 3s. He was moving, head-faking, taking a couple of steps in and to the side and shooting mid-range jumpers. Would have like to see him take a couple of those in the Duke game just to see if that could get his shot going again.

When I look at this data, it is difficult to see how we got in over FSU, except that we left the committee with a win over Syracuse after FSU got beaten earlier in the day by Virginia. The only other piece, and I think it’s important when you are splitting hairs, because of the unbalanced schedule, we beat FSU in our only meeting with them. So, we win!

VaWolf, I so appreciate these kinds of posts as I love the numbers and the analysis.
