I agree with Mike in that most of the violent hits take place while the kickoff is still in the air for the reasons he described. Punts are far less dangerous because the players are running alongside one another. I have heard someone put forth the proposal to make kickoffs like punt returns where the players start closer together. The problem with that, on the surface, is that the kicking team could try to pooch the kickoff to get a fair catch, and then you’re back to the receiving team putting more bodies back there.
On the other hand, if you allow the receiving team 3 players (or 2) to be more than 15 yards from the kickoff line, we could see a lot more attempted “onside” kicks with the pooch kick. Then you have to decide, do I kick it deep or go for getting the ball back where I might give the receiving team the ball near midfield. That would change the game but might be fun. Any change changes the game.
maverick_ncsuParticipantI too am enjoying this thread…
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between most 4-2-5’s and a nickel package defense? Full disclosure: I have watched football my entire life but didn’t start paying attention to packages and names until I played (way too much) NCAA football on the Xbox in college.
maverick_ncsuParticipantWhy??? Why does a 7 footer go away on every shot? He could have soooo many offensive rebounds against this team.
maverick_ncsuParticipantI’m looking at all of these potential matchups, and see no real distinctions between the teams. There has been so much parity in college basketball this year. There is really not much that seperates a 1 from a 4 – so many teams have a chance to win it all this year. Note that we will NOT be matched up in our second game against UVa, Duke or UNC. So with that said our possible draws are:
1 seeds – Kansas, Xavier, Nova
2 seeds – Purdue, Cincy
3 seeds – Tennessee, Auburn, Michigan, MSU
4 seeds – Wichita, Zona, Zags, Texas TechI’m not trying to be overconfident – but nobody there scares me. Of course, if we play like we did against GT and BC, then we are going home early anyways. But if we bring it, we can beat any and all of those teams. Didn’t have much trouble with 1 seed Nova the last time around (but then we followed it up with a stinker against Lville – huge missed opportunity).
I look at teams like Nova, Michigan, MSU, Gonzaga and I don’t want any part of them. They play fundamental basketball and make you work on the defensive end. I would rather face a run-n-gun team this year. Just my two cents. I will add that I think we could beat any team in the country when we play our best.
maverick_ncsuParticipantI said early that if we weren’t going to win the conference and move I, dropping to a 10 is favorable possibly. No way ND or SYR should get in unless they make a huge run at the ACCT. haven’t done enough. Loved the way they didn’t quit. Terrible loss on paper but maybe that fight at the end and yet the terrible taste of the loss will push them in the NCAAT.
maverick_ncsuParticipantThis game would be a game if we hit free throws.
maverick_ncsuParticipantWhat was that Markell?????!!! That was awesome!
maverick_ncsuParticipantWell a fall to a 10 or 11 seed might be preferable anyway.
maverick_ncsuParticipantI do not like that overhead camera. We give up on every rebound. Yurt was potentially there when Al Freeman tipped it on the offensive end, but Yurt was already headed back. Boys, we didn’t come to play today.
maverick_ncsuParticipantWho are these terrible announcers! And can we try to play some defense? We look tired and just standing around on offense. Not playing team ball.
maverick_ncsuParticipantI appreciate all of you guys! I have some of these same questions, but to have a place to be able to ask them and have some serious and some funny at the same time, not much better on a (what-will-be) wet Tuesday here in the Raleigh area. Appreciate you guys.
maverick_ncsuParticipantIf I understand the tiebreaker rules correctly, we have to win out in order to get the double bye. I think we have the tiebreak with Clemson, so it doesn’t matter what they do. VT and UM play each other as their last game, so one of them will be 11-7, and each would have the tiebreaker with us. So, if we drop even one, we lose the double bye. We win out, and we are guaranteed the double bye.
What a great discussion this is considering where I thought we’d be after the 30-pt blowout loss to ND early in the year!!
maverick_ncsuParticipantWhat did Roy say?
maverick_ncsuParticipantregardless of outcome, why is coach okay with two guys shooting 25 3s combined (6-25)? Half our shots cannot be 3s, period.
maverick_ncsuParticipantA. Freeman off the bench is 1-11. That’s hard to put up the most shots on the team off the bench and still be playing. Fouls definitely hurting us as part of this.
This is a chance for coach to coach. Lots of games now where we just start chucking up 3s when we panic. Would like to see some growth in this area, even if we don’t score the basket.
maverick_ncsuParticipantwe’ve shot the ball 15 MORE times and losing by double digits. embarrassing
maverick_ncsuParticipantwow. all but 5 of there shots have been 3s
maverick_ncsuParticipantSo all we know how to do against a zone is chuck up 3’s?? Yurt was killing it. Why go away from that, no matter the defense? We are not a good shooting team.
maverick_ncsuParticipantSo 7th worst scoring in red zone in D1 and 2nd worst kicking. Something HAS to give next year. That is just unacceptable. I realize those are related but still.
maverick_ncsuParticipantForgive me because I’m sure this has been asked and answered in another post, but what is the 1.0, 1.5 every 4 minute segment of the game? botb
maverick_ncsuParticipantMav.. Hines ain’t over rated… he just underweight for the job we’re asking him to do…
I don’t think he’s overrated at all. I think this game helps prove how amazing he is, especially since he’s underweight.
maverick_ncsuParticipantTroll…
Ya’ll knew, or should have known, we ain’t a Top10 team… YET!!!
True, but we aren’t talking about that. We want to have at least a semblance of a fair field. But in any event, we have no offense today but they aren’t amazing or anything. Just wore down our d because we can’t keep our offense on the field.
maverick_ncsuParticipantWTF running Gallaspy on 3rd and 6 in that field position where we aren’t going for it on 4th down? Has the coaching staff given up?
^ this
maverick_ncsuParticipantWay to go Swoff. Bend over for Notre Dame and let them “join” the conference
maverick_ncsuParticipantI know we aren’t looking great, but this is hard to watch and listen too.
