LRMKeymaster
If Doeren leaves us for Kansas, then we have far greater problems here than just losing our football coach to Kansas.
Nevertheless, when the media starts printing candidates, most if those names benefit when they get extensions and raises.
LRMKeymasterGood summary.
They grabbed, pushed, blocked and bumped the WRs well outside the five yard range and it got us out of rhythm.
To be clear, in college that’s good, strategic defense. Unlike the NFL, there’s no 5-yard rule in college. The defense can make contact until the ball is thrown. That physicality made it tough on JB12 when the blocking broke down fast. He was under pressure all night and was stellar.
As for the “injuries” slowing down the offense, this could be stopped easily with new rules. But on the whole, coaches have shown little interest in doing anything about it.
LRMKeymasterFlorida State (-18.5) at State
Tennessee at Georgia (-17)
Northwestern at Penn State (-9.5)
Minnesota at Michigan (-11.5)
Arkansas at Texas A&M (-10)
LRMKeymasterEverything in college football nowadays is justified by recruiting.
Seems like the extra 20+ practices is the real benefit for a program’s development, but I’d bet the research would show very little correlation.
LRMKeymasterI think we dodged an embarrassing bullet for an administration that’d have to react to a major challenge to its asinine 5-hr tailgating rule.
I, personally, prefer the 3:30 slot. Plenty of time to tailgate and still get home to see the late games.
LRMKeymasterFlorida at Alabama (-14.5)
Virginia at BYU (-14)
Indiana at Missouri (-13)
Oklahoma (-7) at WV
Miami at Nebraska (-7)
LRMKeymasterState (-1.5) at South Florida
I don’t trust this defense on the road.Georgia Southern at Georgia Tech (-20)
GT wins, but I just don’t see a 3-TD win against a team that moves the ball so effectively on the ground.West Virginia at Maryland (-3.5)
You can forget the betting lines whenever there’s a classic Big XII-B1G match up like this one.Louisville (-6) at Virginia
Neither of these teams does anything well so far this season. I think this is a field goal game.Arkansas at Texas Tech (-2.5)
Intriguing match up. Tech throws for a ton of yards, Woo Pig Sooie runs for a ton. Tech gets the nod at home.LRMKeymasterTradition matters because it’s what connects all of us in this shared experience that transcends generations.
You don’t Have to be Alabama or Notre Dame to want to hold on to some of that.
But Some of us (myself included) have to realize that superficial changes (like all black uniforms) are a pragmatic necessity in modern college football. The way it should be and the way it is are divergent.
LRMKeymasterI have to pick today, gonna be mostly out of pocket Thurs-Fri.
ODU at State (-16)
Hampton threw for 409 yards against ODU and JB12 (not to be confused with the original JB, JB4), found some rhythm late.Ole Miss (-20) at Vandy
Vandy was not good against Temple. The Rebel Bears win, but Vandy covers at home.USC West at Stanford (-2.5)
Stanford lost a lot on offense and I think USC will just straight outscore them.ECU at USC East (-16.5)
Just because.Virginia Tech at tOSU (-11)
I think tOSU wins, but a close one.LRMKeymasterYou’d consider Louisville, Iowa, Michigan State and Stanford over Virginia Tech?
I stand firmly by my statement: Oregon and VT.
The key is sustained. Virginia Tech (under Beamer) has won 3 Big East and 4 ACC titles and played for a national title (1999). They have more ACC titles since joining than FSU in that same time. They’ve played for as many national titles in the past 20 years as Oregon.
Meanwhile, Michigan State and Iowa each have only two conference titles in the past 20 years. Louisville hasn’t been apart of a BCS conference for 10 years and won a Big East title at 7-6 (and lost to State in Charlotte). Stanford has 9 losing seasons in the past 20 years (State only has 7). None of these are powers over VT.
LRMKeymasterWell, to start, it’s Wolfpack (one word). Pay to park at the Dental School and tailgate there. State fans are (generally) friendly and inviting tailgaters, so don’t be shy. I think the Ramada is the only place close to the stadium. Look in the 27518 zip, that’s Crossroads area and there are several new hotels there (a few miles from C-F).
LRMKeymasterIn the past two decades only two teams (Oregon, Virginia Tech) have emerged as sustained national powers (am I overlooking anyone?)
Baylor has been making its case to become the next one.
LRMKeymasterBoth the Louisville and Miami helmets lack the contrast to wear under the lights (Boise was similar Thursday). You can hardly distinguish the logo on either. I think matte would have been a better route to go.
I don’t take it personal. I prefer the subtle look. But I’m pragmatic. I know a others like the alternates and I appreciate that I’m not the demo the alternates are being marketed to.
LRMKeymasterMy opinion on Doeren, 13 games in: we should re-hire TOB just so we could fire him again.
The talent deficieny isn’t on Doeren (yet).
LRMKeymasterIf I’m honest, with each new gimmick, the further away I feel away my youth.
That, and every time we wear black all I can think of is the Damon Thornton BS technical at Maryland in 2000 that started our disastrous 8-game slide and started the vicious in-fighting over HWSNBN.
Maybe that’s not fair, because the kids now wouldn’t even remember any of that.
But I endured the 90s. I don’t want to be fair.
LRMKeymasterAnyone else notice that Reliant uses natural grass (as God intended) for NFL but puts down field turf for college and high school? That’s certainly one way to keep the natural from taking a beating.
LRMKeymasterCow, I only understand about 20% of what you’re ever saying so I’d never attempt to understand (or judge) your motivations.
But I can imagine your setup ain’t rough around mid-October, when the trees start to rust and the sun heads south.
LRMKeymasterFootball overload. In AC. Can’t complain.
LRMKeymasterBetter teams than us struggled mightily this weekend. A loss today and there’s no chance the season isn’t a disaster. An ugly win keeps some semblance of hope alive that some things could work out to get bowl eligible.
And really, isn’t that the realistic goal this year? That’s what we’ve been told is the reason for the unfavorable out of conference scheduling.
LRMKeymasterJust like Richmond last year, we caught a lucky break very late and then took advantage.
LRMKeymasterI’d love for us to get to a point as a program where we can play the annual regional series like Clemson has against Georgia and Auburn the past decade.
Shame that ACC/SEC +1 model never materialized.
LRMKeymaster77% humidity made for a comfortable afternoon in the stands.
LRMKeymasterCalm down buddy, save some of that outrage for later! WRAL has shifted the coverage to WRAZ for years because of the tennis. It’s why there’s never a national SEC game on CBS Labor Day weekend.
In fact, the real outrage should be that the ACCN starts its game at 12:30, which means most weeks we miss the entire first quarter of the 3:30 SEC game.
LRMKeymasterMy guess is when this game was scheduled we hoped it would help prepare us for Tech later this season. Now we’re just facing another spread.
LRMKeymasterThe new C-F design is subtle, yet very sharp. LRM-approved.
Similar design to the Rose Bowl.
