The Flagship’s defense has never been to deny wrongdoing — it’s always been procedural. Essentially, their entire defense is that the NCAA has no jurisdiction because a Carolina education/degree has no tangible or measured value (i.e., “impermissible benefit”).
That’s the best part.
LRMKeymasterOur disaster of a kicking game left — at minimum — 10 points on the field. Two missed FGs, failed fake PAT and failed fake FG. My problem with that: we know the kicking game sucks. Why fake it? Instead of putting the ball in your punter’s (holder) and kicker’s hands, just line up and go for it with Dayes or Samuels.
LRMKeymasterI should have clarified: I’m not defending Doeren. My frustration is he apparently isn’t that guy (I’d hoped he’d at least get to Notre Dame unbeaten to give us a fighting chance at measured improvement against a tough schedule). And I’m not suggesting he gets a fifth year if this one doesn’t show marked improvement.
Y’all know me, I always love a good firing.
LRMKeymasterWe’re 16 years past Amato selling us on national prominence and glory but we’re no closer now than when Sheridan left in 1993. It’s deceptive because we’re a fan base loyal to a fault, but we’re Power 5 by association only. We’re a mid-tier — perhaps a lower mid-tier — at best.
Last year, my argument wasn’t in support of Doeren, necessarily. It was in support of giving him the chance to establish some semblance of stability — we’re just not in a program that can fire quickly and expect to upgrade. Unfortunately, there’s no evidence we’ll ever be more, always cycling through the next guy hoping for that one lucky break season now and then.
LRMKeymasterReminds me of one of the crazier endings I’ve ever seen: App vs Furman, 2002.
Furman took the lead 15-14 with 0:07 left, but — in retrospect, inexplicably — opted to go for two instead of the PAT and a squib kickoff then prevent against a Hail Mary. App picked-two the attempt for the 16-15 lead, and then Furman still had to kickoff (onsides attempt failed).
Not quite the Iron Bowl Kick 6, but still crazy.
LRMKeymasterThe only others I can think of: BC already plays ND and Louisville plays Kentucky every year.
LRMKeymasterThe ones I mentioned are in the town of Lewisville (on US421 just out of Winston-Salem headed toward Boone).
You gotta pass through the Great State of Wilkes by God before Boone.
LRMKeymasterI agree Hillsborough through campus is cluttered and soulless now, but I don’t see this as a State issue — not sure what influence the University would have over Raleigh city planning efforts.
That footbridge over the beltline, it’s a matter of perspective: it’s actually pretty useful (for those who use it). It connects the Reedy Creek trail coming out of Umstead (the far opposite end is a bridge over 40 by Crabtree Lake that connects to Cary/Morrisville greenways and mountain bike trails) to the greenways around Wade and Meredith.
I travel all over and one of the immediate downsides I notice about most places, is they have no investment to encourage people to be active outside (away from traffic). The entire Triangle area is crisscrossed by really nice greenways, trail ways and parks.
LRMKeymasterCow, a Navy SEAL I’m not. But what I lack with zero athletic ability I more than make up for with pure stubbornness.
LRMKeymasterChop, the hardest part of a triathlon (for me, anyway) is that all the pool training conditions you for the swim, but the pool training doesn’t prepare you at all for the chaos of an open water ocean swim.
My first race at Oak Island, I wasn’t even past the breakers and I’d been kicked in the face, pushed under, swallowed seawater and been stung by several jelly fish — what the hell did I get myself into? But once you calm that initial panic, find a rhythm and then finally hit the beach, you’re hooked.
LRMKeymasterI read an idea I like: in the events like swimming, the top lane should have an average swimmer (like a decent triathlete would be), just as a point of reference to how truly amazing these athletes are by comparison.
I swim regularly, which has helped me become a strong swimmer. But I’m mostly self-taught without proper mechanics, so I’m blown away by even decent-trained swimmers.
LRMKeymasterI’d be curious the comparison based on just the past 25 years.
LRMKeymasterNote they aren’t denying wrongdoing — just denying accountability. That’s the hallmark of the giant hollow lie that is The Carolina Way.
LRMKeymasterND also has around $9 million annually from Under Armour. Any idea how their partial membership affects their ACC licensing fees?
I don’t think ACC members share merchandising revenues — Va, do you know for sure?
LRMKeymasterIn regards to ND joining the B1G as a full member: I wouldn’t rule anything out anymore.
Consider the only reason Texas isn’t in the Pac or SEC now is because of the LHN.
LRMKeymasterWow, I inexplicably forgot all about Nebraska.
Bowen’s 180 last week on XII expansion was…odd. Especially considering the semi-stability of a 10-team league. This isn’t the SEC and Pac courting Texas and Oklahoma in 2010. Baylor and TCU were snubbed by the CFP in 2014 because they both had one decent win — adding Cincinati and Houston and then not playing (or losing to) Oklahoma and Oklahoma State because they’re opposite division doesn’t really solve that problem.
LRMKeymasterI still think we’re headed towards four 16-team super conferences, or even some sort of single super league. Whatever the XII decides, it will be shaky compared to the other power conferences (no less shaky than it’s been since Texas A&M, Colorado and Missouri left).
LRMKeymasterVa makes an interesting point. No one really knows what ND’s NBC contract is worth, but you could be certain that ESPN would gladly renegotiate the ACCN deal with ND as a full member (or Fox/ESPN if the B1G or XII somehow got ND). At least for now, it seems NBC still has the upper hand. And there has to be some inherent non-financial value to ND to retain as much control over their schedule as they can.
I do think ND joining the ACC would forever kill the potential for the 9-game league schedule.
05/15/2016 at 6:17 PM in reply to: Russell Wilson's Commencement Speech AKA Ramblings Of A Lunatic #103397LRMKeymasterThis was so weird, considering RW has gone on record with several variations of his departure over the years — none resembling this one.
For a guy so usually-calculated, this embellishment of the generally-accepted narrative sure seems like deliberate PR to advance his carefully-crafted image as the perpetual underdog who out works everyone else.
For someone who promotes himself as team first, the entire speech was about him.
LRMKeymasterThat may replace Tombstone as my favorite movie ever.
Why, UNC fans, y’all look like someone just walked all over your grave.
LRMKeymasterThe Vegas 16 ended up with only eight teams.
LRMKeymasterBecause there’s no way to sell any March tournament relying on sub-.500 major programs as anything beyond a shameless, self-serving money-grab by the athletic department.
It’s time to call it a season, get some rest and come back focused on next season.
LRMKeymasterEvery single person in the athletic department should be fired if they do this.
LRMKeymasterPlaying Tuesday Noon in the ACCT is about as disconnected as I’ve ever felt from the ACC of my youth.
LRMKeymasterIf we intentionally extend this season (NIT, new Vegas tourney) via any other means than winning, then everyone in the athletic department should be fired.
