If the fine folks in Kernersville can handle a roundabout and manage to have nobody die when double-trailers come flying out of the nearby FedEx ground hub then the rest of us can handle them as well.
As for Hillsborough Street, I think it’s demise started in 1984 when they began raising the drinking age. By the late 80’s the drinking age was 21 and the complexion really began to change and only continued. While I would prefer that a good part of stay the same, I think most other folks like it as is. Look at the apartments these kids stay in now. Granite countertops, nice appliances (that work), and seemingly everyone with their own bedroom and bedroom.
Not as many people interested in dive bars and cheap food when they’re living high on the hog.
In full disclosure, it has been a battle to keep my kids from feeling underprivileged if they didn’t feel as though they were keeping up with the other kids.
gso packbackerParticipantGranted, I have enjoyed the results in the pool in Rio, but there is something about Olympic swimming that makes me want to watch even if the US isn’t dominating. Could be Spitz in ’72 (family even made a trek to the pool in Munich while were there years ago) or a distinct appreciation of these athletes as I am one of the least buoyant people I know.
Even tried to take up swimming again last year, but so disheartening to watch people glide through the pool with a random stroke here and there while I am flurry of activity just to prevent drowning. Yeah, I tried the flippers and all of the other gadgets they had, but eventually gave it up for running and biking.
gso packbackerParticipantWe spend a lot of money on education. A lot. The problem is parents have to be very active in their childβs education. Working with them on their homework. Encouraging them to do their best. Supporting the teachers instead of attacking them. It is very hard for a single parent to do this.
Rick, you hit the nail on the head here. To carry that even further, my kids went to a great elementary school, but the in the last 2 year of my youngest the school enrollment got cut by a 1/3 and the demographics changed dramatically with a new school opening and some redistricting. In one year, the quality and effectiveness took a nosedive in large [art because the number of school volunteers dropped precipitously. This had a ripple effect on the teachers, afterschool activities, etc.. Interesting, but kinda scary to see first hand.
gso packbackerParticipantWow, just wow! No words
gso packbackerParticipantAhh, now we get to the details. While I guess, I can imagine there is someonw out there in NC whose birth certificate says male, but has a highly unsusual situation below the belt. I don’t really see this case as self identifying as much as trying to correctly identify, regardless of what someone put on a birth certificate years earlier.
Sure, not a lot of these cases, but how would someone in this situation go about about things? Can you petition for a change in birth certificate gender without a sex change?
Serious question. When I think of the law, I think about people like thia, not some pervert stalking the bathroom, although we must protect againat that as well. That is why they coined the phrase comprehensive legialation.
gso packbackerParticipantWhile I don’t see it as unreasonable, I also recall working at a Grocery store in the early 80s and watching a lot of people (black and white) sign their checks with an X on the back.
I would still like to see the real number on people without an id and their reason. Juat curious.
gso packbackerParticipantI feel threatened by pollsters asking questions, where does that get recorded? π
gso packbackerParticipantYogi, thank you for sharing those examples of your company’s work as I was prepared to lump you in with all of those other polling firms who seem to be taking long lunches and flipping coins. π
With that said, I still believe this issue is being both overblown and oversimplified at the same time.
p.s. That is NOT a recipe for progress
gso packbackerParticipantI wish them luck, but just don’t see this happening whatsoever.
On a somewhat related note, heading to Greenville with friends for the State game this fall since both our sons both go there. We have a hotel, but no tickets yet. I freely admit to highly preferring not even going in the stadium and just putting my tailgating skills on display. I can handle us losing, just not sure I can handle their fans in their house (win OR lose). Advice from those who have been???
gso packbackerParticipant“Unfortunately, middle ground isnβt sought. And we have all taken the bait. Both sides got what they wanted”
This is exactly what I am most embarrassed about! Both sides making broad brush statements, neither wanting to work together, dig into the details (perceptions AND realities), then come up with something that is fair, comprehensive, and on solid legal footing.
Nope, let’s just piss all over each other and complain about the other, all while passersby giggle and take their $ elsewhere.
gso packbackerParticipantPolitical correctness, while well-intended, creates as many issues as it hopes to solve, ignoring the real issues that need to be confronted.
It seems PC is often used by people from both sides because they are talking AT each other, not to each other. Yes, we should consider differing perspectives (education and enlightenment anyone?), but that comes more through real conversations than internet forums.
As my Dad used to preach to me, Perception IS Reality. That is, THEIR perception is YOUR reality so you better deal with it. And trust me, my Dad was in no way Politically Correct.
gso packbackerParticipantMy take on the Transgender Bathroom issue is that people felt like they got it (pardun the pun) jammed down their throat. The gay marriage feeling wasn’t that different and over time opinions did change. Not sure how much and how soon on this though.
That aside, I can appreciate where both sides are coming from and what their concerns are. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who has all of the facts in the cases that Pakfanistan speaks too. Yes, these are the grey areas and nobody seems to have thought through them very much. Damn Politicians (in Charlotte and Raleigh) whose primary concern is re-election!
As for the original version of HB2, I did actually read it and the thing I was least concerned about was the bathroom stuff. It seems they’ve corrected most of the other stuff (from what I’ve heard).
At the end of the day, I am hard pressed to see what value came out of this for either side. On that point, I am pretty sure our fair Governor would agree with me. Poorly played Uncle Pat, poorly played. Will be interesting to see what impact this has on things this November.
gso packbackerParticipantExcellent points! Easier to learn it when you can watch and talk to someone who already knows it. Just helped reduce the learning curve, and that should be a big plus for our QBs.
gso packbackerParticipantFastback, I just found that quote. Classic!
gso packbackerParticipantTip for the day: When it’s always someone else, then maybe, just maybe, it’s actually you.
gso packbackerParticipantYes, good news for a change!
05/16/2016 at 10:00 AM in reply to: Russell Wilson's Commencement Speech AKA Ramblings Of A Lunatic #103420gso packbackerParticipantSpeech started out pretty little awkward to me, but I think he was trying too hard to be funny/cool. At the end of the day, I felt as though he came across like a 27 year-old who has done well for himself in spite of a number of obstacles, but still holds a grudge against at least one of his coaches.
We’ve only seen the highly composed and on message Russell Wilson before so for that reason alone it seemed odd to me. I’m proud to call him a Wolfpacker so I’m giving a pass.
Sure felt like he mentioned NC State a lot though, especially given he was in Madison.
p.s. I did like his point where highlighted the difference between following a passion because you know you’re capable versus following a passion just because it’s a passion. Sound career advice for the Millennials!
gso packbackerParticipantIf I had to rank players on this year’s roster that came across to me as uncoachable, Cat wouldn’t make the top 3. Then again, that makes an assumption about what Gott was and was not coaching. Just going the let that comment float out there …
gso packbackerParticipantAnd the funny thing β when this topic comes up on State boards β you will see 10 different people aware they heard it after 10 different games.
I remember it being after a flight home from an away game (Kansas?) which just speaks to Chop’s point. Given all that, I highly doubt he ever actually said just that.
gso packbackerParticipantRudderless ship? Impending iceberg collision? Count me in! π
On a more serious note, I am curious as to how assistant coach hires are made. What level of involvement does the AD and their staff have in the process?
gso packbackerParticipantWas going through the NC State online archives a few months back and came across this article in the Technician. Not trying to start this debate again, but it does point to how ingrained the alleged comment was in the NC State culture back in 1988.
April 15, 1988 Technician Sport Page
p.s. If you ever have a few minutes, go through a few copies of the Technician during your era (mid 80’s for me) and refresh your memory with regard to what they were writing about.
gso packbackerParticipantRick, when you whip it out like that, sometimes you get fellated, sometimes you get slapped, and other times you just get laughed at.
gso packbackerParticipantWhile I admire your use of medical speak to insult someone, one would think that as a moderator you ahould be above it. Does telling someone they suck the coaches “USC mascot” not cross some line???
Let me know because I gott some good ones!!!
gso packbackerParticipant@ Cowdog – Actually, my Grandfather finished in mid 1920’s (basketball/football/baseball/track), but was inducted in 1973. I was only a wee lad, but I remember it was a really big deal (the game) as they played a South Carolina team coached by Frank McGuire that had Alex English and Mike Dunleavy on the roster.
My Pops also did a “short tour” of Bonnies before they decided he might want to pursue other endeavors before returning and later decided to finish at Syracuse.
They had more great stories than you could shake a stick at!
gso packbackerParticipantMonmouth’s bench deserved an NCAA Tourney bid more than their starters. As for King Rice, ugh, ugh, and double ugh. Even many Carolina fans I knew didn’t like him and they tolerate about anything for Wins.
Personally, St. Bonaventure got shafted in my opinion, but my grandfather is a HOFer there so color me biased.
Also, why the Mid-Major bitching. No data here, but seems like every other year they’ve gotten the benefit of the doubt. Turnabout is fair play I say.
