Things were botched with the release. Can’t undo that so what do you do now? If someone doesn’t address the team and say something thenn this goes from bad to worse, to “worser”. 😉

This is about more than people’s feelings and plausible deniability at this point. How we hamdle this period is a DIRECT reflection of our Athletic Organization and WILL impact our ability to attract a coach.

Using peripheral vision with the proper spacing, staying down on the ball and the floor, moving your feet, hands up in the passing lanes–this is not hard to coach, technically. It does take a lot of unglamorous effort and conditioning. But a lot of it is intuitive.

I want to analyze a bit because this is what frustrates me about a coach of just about any sport.

While defense and team defense aren’t rocket science, it is extremely helpful if it’s done with a good TEACHER. A bad teacher can screw up teaching just about anything (we all had one of these Teachers)

For some players, defense is intuitive (feels that way for me), but for most I don’t think it is. Some people don’t have that built-in vision/awareness, don’t recognize patterns, and don’t consider the next move like with billiard, chess, etc..

All in all, my frustration is that one of the scenarios must be true about our coaches since we don’t seem to have made any progress.
    -They don’t understand team defense
-They understand, but can’t teach team defense
-They understand it, can teach it, but just not to this group (players can’t grasp it)
-They don’t sufficiently value team defense

As painful as it can be to watch him trudging along on the court, my sense is that he was happier and even played a little better WITH the weight over his first few seasons.

Currently, he can’t play for long and he can only play in certain “conditions”, however, I would invest all coaching efforts toward getting the team to play defense together and not worry about the Big Man’s weight.

I am waiting for an announcer to ask how much he weighs and the color analyst to respond “three or four spins”. 🙂

Valid points on both sides, and while I am tempted to add a few more points they will fall upon deaf ears as this conversation has gone so far past the point of diminishing returns that I can’t even think up a decent analogy.

Let’s just say it is time for everyone to put the keyboard down and grab an adult beverage of their choice.

I never realized that so many people had their personal livelihoods on the line with the success or failure of NC State (revenue generating ONLY) athletic success. 🙂

My sense of why O’Brien was ultimately let go was that while he agreed with Yow on the program goals and objectives, he didn’t feel that he needed to do anything differently to achieve those results.

If that kind of stuff is indeed important to Debbie, she better have been in Gott’s office having this discussion a few weeks ago.

From my vantage point, I don’t see any changes (results aside).

All that being said, I am treating a possible coaching change just like a do a State game. Greatly manage expectations, hope for the best, and just do my best to enjoy the show.

A question to someone who knows more than just the ranking of the class.

According to 247sports, we had 6 members of our class who were “graded” as a 0.70. Heck, 5 of them didn’t even have a picture.

Any clue? It appears as some of them may not be coming directly from high school.

I think my text exchange with a friend summed it up for me.

    Him: Wow!
    Me: Indeed

Time to put a bow on it as the only question is whether McCallum’s prediction of 5-11 will be too optimistic at the end of the day. 🙂

As for the preseason pick at #24, I’ll tuck that in my back pocket and let it marinate. Not drinking the kool-aid quite yet.

Yeah but it’s not like we’d have had to use Marcus Stone or the fat dude from Nebraska. I really think McClendon would have done ok.

I knew exactly whom you meant when you said “fat dude from Nebraska”. Lol

My memory may be off, but the only visual I can conjure up of him is lumbering back in the pocket and launching a rocket down the middle of the field OVER a receiver’s head.

Evidently losing to State is the WORST!

Coach K bans team from locker room and wearing team gear

Yawn! While I appreciate his seemingly old-school tactics here, it’s not like they have a home game within the next week.

Inconvenient for sure, but I’d like to see him do that for a home game.

Call me cynical, but it seems a bit like another Grayson Allen “indefinite suspension” to me.

My 11yr old Daughter told me right after the game “Dad it looks like coach Gott’s win tonight may have helped him keep the coaching job”. Then she followed with an even more profound statement “it’s OK Dad, that’s what normally happens every year with the Wolfpack”. True story…..Kids have a way of bringing light to the situation.

Has any kid under the age of 40 witnessed anything else in their lifetime? 🙂

My son wasn’t born the last time we won in Cameron. He’s 21 now.

On the plus side, he said he still got “chills” watching the highlight of Smith’s end of game dunk, fully knowing that it didn’t count.

As said, Lowe beat the Dookies in Cameron, we all know how that chapter ended

Actually, Les Robinson was the last NC State coach to win there, but your point about the victory is still the same.

Conclusions. Operational MMLs are associated with reductions in opioid positivity among 21- to 40-year-old fatally injured drivers and may reduce opioid use and overdose.

Interesting. Sounds like a future government grant to study those most at risk of opioid addiction and get them smoking really good stuff early on so they won’t feel as compelled to move on to opioids.

On a personal level I don’t really care one way or the other, however, there are a whole lotta logistical things that haven’t been figured out and would create a heckuva lot of legal issues.

For example, driving under the influence of marijuana. Doesn’t seem to be a cheap, fast, and reliable way to test.

… a part of the difference was bringing on the former Miami coach …

Did she provide the bump in recruiting? There are a lot of underclassmen (underclasswomen?) get a lot of minutes.

Actually, it was a he. 🙂 Since he came on board late last March and left for a head coaching position at Miss St. in early December, I would say his impact on recruiting would only this coming year. The word on the street had it that his scouting and pre-game planning was highly beneficial this year. Let’s hope it continues.

All that aside, this is just like all of the top schools scooping up these discarded head coaches in football, regardless of what they’ve been accused of. Apparently, one-and-done can be for Assistant coaches too as programs are looking for any competitive edge.

I conveniently forgot about our game and enjoyed the Packers and Cowboys game were I had no dog in the fight. Best non-decision I made all weekend. 🙂

Someone over there on the sideline better figure it out fast as this team is all but dead last in the ACC in Offensive and Defensive efficiency. Combine that with leading the league in turnovers just exacerbates the effect.

The coach hiring/firing is obviously a critical piece to the success and/or failure of all sports, but I think the thing that is missed in the larger conversation is that no matter how good the head coach is, they must be able to put together a group of coaches/staff that is also as good AND then get them to be able to work well together. I think we have seen this issue in our men’s revenue sports. 🙂

Take for example the women’s soccer program this year. Winless in ACC play in seemingly forever, they suddenly start winning like they haven’t done in 20 years. Look behind the scenes and you may find that a part of the difference was bringing on the former Miami coach who had a pretty successful program there before running into some serious trouble.

Bottom line is that no coach can do everything in this day and age so they better be able to be good at hiring a good staff and getting the most from them.

Psst, I think I know what is stressing Gott … the lack of results on the floor and not having much to point a finger at other than himself. Given the pieces in place, EVERYONE expects us to have better results. Heck, regardless of the pieces, I expect this group to play as a team or something close to it.

p.s. I do agree that BC is not a bad team, but our poor play was the key to that loss.

Even most curmudgeons fail to keep from admitting that this is slight progress over the Todd Turner and Lee Fowler days of yesteryear. 😉

While the end of the year standings may look a bit different, I’ll still take it.

I poorly communicated my thoughts if anyone took my statement as firing coach mid-season (only appropriate in cases of near complete implosion or inappropriate behavior).

I would however begin working on a plan that could be readily executed if we need to part ways at the end of the year.

Not doing so can only limit our potential options, however many or few actually exist.

I was a fan of Yow canning O’Brien because (as I heard it) they both expected different results, but he wasn’t going to change anything (definition of insanity). Otherwise, we do have a habit of keeping coaches too long.

My math says Gottfried, Yow, and Woodson have been together for 6 years (Debbie and Randy came a year prior). The last trio we had together like that for 6 years was Les Robinson, Todd Turner and Larry Monteith.
