StateRed, if you can turn it off and in without it impacting your family, then you are better at it than most others. I have family like that and over time it has filtered into the larger family. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see it, but the rest of us do.
My answer was to be my own boss as I didn’t see as much value making others wealthy Of course, at that point I realized that I now “worked” for everybody.
gso packbackerParticipantThe Women’s team finished 7th (best ever) and the Men are slated to do the same.
Everyone should see the value of it, or at least not make light of the accomplishment. ๐
gso packbackerParticipantNo denying that the ACC has completely screwed the pooch this year. Everyone gets a turn leading this parade eventually, and I am sure that the Big12 is glad NOT to have the honor again this year. Sorry, but a P5 conference with a team that has 13 consecutive titles in this day and age can’t be as good as anyone thinks.
gso packbackerParticipant^^ Shaking my head StateRed (assuming that this is not sarcasm).
Everything else aside, who would want to work for someone that “ALWAYS (did) things that benefit(ed) their own position to the utmost”? Not me, and nobody else worth their salt either. Let’s just say this is a very short-term thinking kind of strategy.
However, if you want to become President of the United States, it may indeed be a good way to go.
gso packbackerParticipantI had a great response, but it is apparently now somewhere in the ether and it is too length to retype.
Regardless, Grey makes a great point about looking at one’s self first. I’m pretty sure we’d all agree (minus most of the media) if this was Coach Gott bemoaning that he “got played” by NC State. Different situation, but perhaps not as much as you think. ๐
gso packbackerParticipantLike others, I tend to focus more on football and basketball which has led to my continued dismay and frustration. However, if I step back and look at her entire body of work, then I feel that she has indeed moved the ball forward for NC State Athletics.
That hasn’t happened since Harold Hopfenburg took over.
gso packbackerParticipantWell put GC!
gso packbackerParticipantIf it is a one-person issue, I suggest rethinking. However, if it is a company culture issue, politely pull yourself from consideration and run away.
As NC State fans, I think we can all appreciate the how difficult it is for organization culture to make significant change for the better. ๐
gso packbackerParticipantMcCallum,
Assuming you won’t send the HR person a link to this board with your witty repartee, I suggest the following.First, figure out if this is the job you want compensation aside. If yes, proceed.
Next, thoroughly review everything and afterwards determine what you believe is fair compensation (doesn’t matter yet what anyone else thinks)
Finally, call (email if you must) the HR person and tell them that you thought about your conversation over the weekend and that you are very excited about the organization and the opportunity. You’ve reviewed all of the benefits information and wanted to discuss compensation more specifically. Tell them that (again) that you are at X. Then state that if they make an official offer at X’, you will accept, tender your resignation and start in 2 weeks.
This isn’t hardball, but just a matter of getting to the the point They now know that if they offer at X’, you will accept Anything below that opens the door to being turned down. Super simple and no game playing. I do this all the time and I hate “negotiating”.
Fwiw, I am scheduled to do this tomorrow morning with a CIO and it is for a $120k offer. They want to come in at 115k + 5k up front, but that opens up the possibility of a turn down. You can’t make decisions for others, just give them all the data to make an informed decision
p.s. it wasn’t an offer from HR, it was in essence a promise ring. All but meaningless.

02/22/2017 at 10:44 AM in reply to: Your “Where’s Gen. Wm Tecumseh Sherman When You Need Him?” at GT Open Thread #118763gso packbackerParticipantGrey,
“They’re not well coached” and “Why make the last free throw?”.
Perhaps the explanation for the latter IS the former.
I don’t know, but I found humor in the possibility.
Also, I would have fouled the Syracuse shooter at the end of regulation, giving him 2 free throws instead of a 3-pt attempt.
02/22/2017 at 9:38 AM in reply to: Your “Where’s Gen. Wm Tecumseh Sherman When You Need Him?” at GT Open Thread #118758gso packbackerParticipantGood point Grey, but do you notice the irony of your statement? ๐
Anyway, I don’t know if I would have had him miss it, but I do know I would have had someone guarding the inbound pass.
gso packbackerParticipantWhat gets me is how all of the media reports us for being so horrible for firing Gottfried mid-season, yet fail to even mention about the “dumbster” fire that was brewing and the potential effects.
Anyway, it looks like the boys over at DBR were smart enough to figure it out. A good enough read that I could envision it actually being penned by an reasonably informed, but perhaps more subdued State fan.
gso packbackerParticipant@McCallum – Goats? Plural? Now there is someone that has got a chip on his shoulder. Any chance he can coach MBB? ๐
I like Bilas for the most part. However, I don’t agree with him on all of those points. I don’t see Miami as a better job unless you like that scenery or you can’t handle being judged in part by your performance against the big boys in blue.
Last time I checked, I don’t want our coach bringing his collection of lace panties and a lifetime supply of salve to Raleigh
gso packbackerParticipantAfter Saigon’s comment, I expected it to completely suck. Good news is that he sufficiently managed my expectations. I liked it. Not forwarding or tweeting about it, but nicely done.
gso packbackerParticipantYep, Archie is my #1.
If notโฆ
โ Wojo and Enfield are my top 2 from the Power5
โ Keatts and Dooley from the Mid-MajorsWojo? Seriously? Gross.
If youโre looking at Duke alums,
Collins >>>>>>> Wojo.Gross? I’m not advocating any phyiscal contact with him. am I? ๐
Just thinking Wojo was more realistic and less arrogant than Collins. Now if Collins grew his hair out and got a perm like his old man did in the late 80’s … just sayin’
gso packbackerParticipantYep, Archie is my #1.
If not…
– Wojo and Enfield are my top 2 from the Power5
– Keatts and Dooley from the Mid-Majorsgso packbackerParticipantSomeone posed a question about guessing our next coach. Full disclosure, I have no clue, but I did pull up a list of all of the D1 coaches and weed out the following.
– Less than 3rd season at school
– Not been at same school more than 7 years
– at least a modicom of success (including current year)The list is much shorter than I imagined only using these criteria.

Power 5 Conferences + Big East
Steve Wojciechowski (40): 3 years @ Marquette Golden Eagles
Kevin Willard (41): 7 years @ Seton Hall Pirates
Chris Collins (42): 4 years @ Northwestern Wildcats
Chris Holtmann (45): 3 years @ Butler Bulldogs
Cuonzo Martin (45): 3 years @ California Golden Bears
Andy Enfield (47): 4 years @ USC Trojans
Ed Cooley (47): 6 years @ Providence Friars
Frank Martin (50): 5 years @ South Carolina Gamecocks
Greg McDermott (52): 7 years @ Creighton Bluejays
Billy Kennedy (52): 6 years @ Texas A&M Aggies
Fran McCaffery(57): 7 years @ Iowa Hawkeyes-
Mid-Majors
Archie Miller(38): 6 years @ Dayton Flyers
Earl Grant(40): 3 years @ Charleston Cougars
Dan Muller(40): 5 years @ Illinois State Redbirds
Pat Kelsey(41): 5 years @ Winthrop Eagles
Dan Hurley(43): 5 years @ Rhode Island Rams
Kevin Keatts(44): 3 years @ UNC Wilmington Seahawks
Joe Dooley(50): 4 years @ Florida Gulf Coast EaglesThere are surely folks on here that we wouldn’t want or wouldn’t want us, but using tenure and a measurement of success GREATLY weeds out the number of head coaches in our target pool. Interesting exercise anyway.
gso packbackerParticipantPerception is reality but often on of the greatest human errors is the notion that things wonโt change. The powerful will always be powerful etcโฆ Things always change, always, always. They always do. We can be successful. There is no birthright to success anywhere. We just have to make it happen. We are no more inept as a university than anywhere else. Itโs not like we are a bunch of retards. Everybody makes mistakes from the top to the bottom. The perception is based on history, but the future is not set.
Agree 100%. I am in the business of change. My point is to understand the perceptions of others (potential candidates) and change that.
gso packbackerParticipantIf she is hard to work for that is one thing. If it is lack of money, resources, moral support, or whatever, then that is a different story altogether.
Either way, from the top (i.e., Chancellor) we need to sufficiently understand the true challenges we face in the coaching marketplace, make the appropriate corrections, and then effectively communicate within the coaching circles.
Since perception is reality, let’s create a better perception. Wonder if Carolina’s PR firm has some extra time?
gso packbackerParticipantIF we are concerned about how we are viewed by coaching candidates, then as much as I dislike it, we should let him finish the season.
We already know he is gone so the only other possible benefits of letting him go at this point would be to send a message to the players in hope that they wouldn’t transfer or to promote a potential replacement and see how they do (not sure it would be a fair assessment for anyone involved).
Anyway, we can accomplish the former in other ways (primarily though a very solid hire), and the latter I have no desire for. One of our Assistants may actually be the solution, but nobody on that bench should be under consideration (other than Anya! ๐ )
gso packbackerParticipantBtw, if I am Randy Woodson, how Debbie performs between yesterday and the end of the season will dictate her future employment with NC State.
gso packbackerParticipantMy only concern is if Arch thinks this is indicative of a larger disfunction and says I donโt want to deal with that trainwreck. This, and the way others continue to hate his former coach and boss, could understandably tip the scales.
Exactly why it is absolutely critical how we manage the situation from here on out! Without knowing exactly what HAS happened, it’s hard to say what we should do. Regardless, whatever it appears we do (perception is reality) will be viewed as a direct reflection of who we are and how we operate (as it should). Just human nature boys!
gso packbackerParticipantThink about if the players haven’t heard anything other than we have. I think it would be extra tough to focus on the game at hand, but maybe I’m wrong.
We’ll find out soon enough with Carolina coming to town tomorrow.
