gso packbackerParticipant
Spot on with the reference to Woodson as the key. Didn’t realize his contract was up next year, but I sure hope we keep him around. While nobody is perfect, I love what he’s done and what has been done under his watch.
Heck, he even recommended to my daughter that she highly consider other schools as they were better suited for her career goals. While that had all but been decided, the fact that he gave us an honest, informed opinion was refreshing.
gso packbackerParticipantThe final results are in for 2018 and once again we faded in the spring. However, we finished 15th this year compared to 29th last year. Also, 3rd in the ACC (behind FSU and Duke) and one slot AHEAD of UNC.
Again, that’s progress.
gso packbackerParticipantLooking into the details of his record and postseason performance, other than the early 2000’s, Avent has been extremely consistent over the years.
So the real question is “what’s the minimum?” And remember that if the minimum wasn’t good enough, then it wouldn’t be the minimum, would it?
Personally, I think he has met the minimum from my standpoint. However, my question as the AD would be the same as it was to Tom O’Brien. If we both agree our goal is something more than what we’ve achieved (e.g. ACC Championship), what are we going to do differently to achieve that result? We know what they say about doing the same things and expecting different results.
gso packbackerParticipantIf I recall correctly, as I walked out of C-F in late October after watching the loss to BC , I was “done”.
In retrospect, this was after the heartbreaker at Death Valley followed up by the shellacking at Louisville. While I anticipated us playing Clemson well and then getting handily beat by U of L, even a reasonable State fan can be worn down so much after watching the ECU loss in person and then following it up with all that.
By the end of the season, we had shown more of the same (plenty of good, but just enough bad sprinkled in). After the UNC game, I was fine with whatever was decided about keeping DD, but was a little surprised when we did.
Coaching aside, I am VERY curious to see how things pan out next year. Lots of folks seem to think we will experience a sizable drop off with the graduation of so many starters on Defense. I am hopeful our offense can take another step forward and the defense can find a way to keep us out of a shootout every game.
gso packbackerParticipantNo clue what the committee will do when seeding us and determining an opponent (yes, I believe we are a “lock” at this point), but I do feel better than in past years. Just my take, but it seems that we’ve had more players step up at different times (on the flip side this points to a lack of consistency). That combined with a willingness by KK to be a little more dynamic (thoughtful?)
than his predecessor with who plays and when, makes me feel as though we can beat teams that we might not match up well with on paper. We’ll get another test next week. ๐gso packbackerParticipantCan’t come out and play like that in the first half and expect to win. Heck, not even if it’s against Pittsburgh.
Aside from that, we’re going to the NCAA tournament no matter what else happens with ND, Syracuse, etc. $100 bet with 10 to 1 odds for anyone who truly believes otherwise.
If you want to look at teams that should be nervous, look to USC and UCLA. IF they both make it, the Pac-12 will likely only have 4 bids. Doesn’t that in and of itself say that league sucks?!? I digress.
gso packbackerParticipantWent to waybackmachine.org and found this gem about ASM Sports and the “personal services” they offered. Best part is that their motto was “Representing tomorrow’s stars, today.” Seriously, comedy gold right there, folks!
ASM SPORTS is a strong, family-oriented unit. We help clear obstacles of all kinds.
– Assist in travel and transportation services.
– Short and long-term housing arrangements.
– Experienced assistance with a variety of unique life situations that NBA, and all professional athletes face.gso packbackerParticipantNot going to worry about this until we get a lot more information. No value for me personally to worry ahead of time, as someone posted earlier.
But, it does say to me that the business of college sports is corrupted beyond what I previously thought.
Also, I saw Brendan Haywood on there. The cat was drafted in 2001, but still has an outstanding debt to these guys for $300 or so dollars?. The agent couldnโt even figure out how to produce a decent financial report from what I could tell. Would he really keep an A/R transaction for 15 years? Possibly Brandon was helping him recruit other players to join the agency and this was just an unrecouped expense. Either way, itโs a big mess.
gso packbackerParticipantWith regard to this situation, most of us only know what we’ve read.
My sense (what I read somewhere) was that in not signing earlier, he was hoping that he won another game or two and to gain more leverage (that means he didn’t love the proposed deal, btw). Since he didn’t, that led to him “looking” elsewhere to get said leverage.
Not sure if that is what happened, but it seems VERY plausible.
gso packbackerParticipantAt one time, didn’t Gott and Doeren have the same agent? If it is still the same, I wonder how that is impacting Debbie and how she is playing out things currently?
gso packbackerParticipantBtw, I am laughing at the Tennessee ADs earlier comment about not wanting to use a search firm. Wonder if his dumpster fire of a coaching search is making him rethink things.
gso packbackerParticipantDD doesn’t exactly light my world on fire, but if we have to replace him, I don’t think we end up ahead of the game in the next few years. The smart play to me is to keep him, but WITHOUT being bent over.
We have no clue what the details are, but Skitchwolf and Chop make some good points.
My thought would be to stagger pay/incentives in both directions and let DD pick the level of risk he wants to take for he and his assistants. However, most people are like salespeople. When they’re killing it, they want to work on commission, but when things are in the tank they want a bigger base salary (and a buyout).
As BOTB stated, who has the balls?
gso packbackerParticipantA frustrating loss and the calls and clock management at the very end were dizzying. Hope we take the holes begind the woodshed.
Btw, Troll, please don’t flatter yourself that you actually irked me. Also, I was more curious as to your thought on what caused it to moved. Clearly, they knew it was Senior Day already.
Also, after reading the thread post game, it appears you were the one who got a bit irked by the Senior Day stuff. May I suggest switching to Sanka.
gso packbackerParticipant^Why is that Troll? No, I won’t ask for data to support your belief, but just truly curious why you believe that. To me, that is just bookmakers reacting to the betting.
Watching the game from Smith Mountain Lake. No access so an hdmi cord from laptop to tv will save the day. Yay internet!
gso packbackerParticipantGiven the recent record between the two schools, Wake knows they can beat us, especially in their house. Conversely, we know a win there isn’t easy to come by. They have confidence, are playing well, and are at home. Again, no surprises for us.
To the point made by others, it’s about putting together a good gameplan and then executing.
Btw, I’d much rather be a slight underdog in this one than a slight favorite. How can that not be a little extra motivation?
gso packbackerParticipantCount me in! How many others need to step up before we make this official?
gso packbackerParticipant3 games into the season and we haven’t been in a game that felt like a nail-biter. Sad to say, but I too feel like that is a small step forward.
Bottom line, I feel like we will be a better this year with Keatts than we would have been with Gott. However, I am grading this season like we were graded in NC State PE classes. That is, not upon how good we are (W-L record), but how much better we get over the course of the season.
gso packbackerParticipantBe careful when “wagering” with McCallum as he qualifies like a good lawyer. Can’t blame him though.
Iโll change my avatar to Dapper Dave if this is a 10 win year.
You ALL change yours to Todd Turner if this is less than 10 wins.
McCallum
Personally, I’d change my avatar to TT, but I’m also pretty good with photoshop too. ๐ As for the “ALL” referred to in his statement, that is the proverbial “out clause”.
gso packbackerParticipantSpot on with the LB assessment McCallum. I think there were some sore necks in the defensive backfield after the ND game.
Clempsun is big, athletic, strong, and fast (heck, they look impressive to me in warmups), so I recommend we keep them in front of us if at all possible.
Question for the masses. If we win the toss, would YOU prefer to kick or receive?
gso packbackerParticipantWe know Clemson is licking their chops after watching ND handle us like that on those short and intermediate throws.
I don’t anticipate the officiating to be different at our place. What we have going for us is a home crowd that is pumped. The other thing we have is knowing that we have find a way to counter that sometime before Saturday.
Not sure about Nyheim’s condition come Saturday, but I sure as heck hope he can give some quality minutes.
gso packbackerParticipantAw, you always know just what to say, McCallum. ๐
I’ll be there and ready for a chance to see our boys make a statement!
gso packbackerParticipantLooks like the appeal is denied which is no surprise whatsoever. However, here is what makes no sense. Lavar Batts decommits to VCU and ok to play. Braxton Beverly decommits and can’t play. The only difference is that one attended a few weeks of a summer session.
The kicker is that even by the NCAA own’s guidelines, summer sessions do not count toward eligibility (i.e., period for sitting out), yet they count toward ineligibility (as in this case).
How is that not clearly inconsistent and unjust toward the student? Apparently, we need better lawyers! Actually, all appeals are handled through the Commissioner’s office and not the University. Hmm, I wonder how hard the ACC is arguing this case? As a member of the ACC I would expect more from them. Maybe a voice of support?!?! Then again, ol’ Swofford and Co. might not have many friends in Indy to ask for a favor.
gso packbackerParticipantGood ones come, good ones go and good leaders know how to find โem.
Good leaders attract good people. The opposite is true as well.
“Great” organizations don’t have people jumping out the window to go elsewhere (Amato’s staff?), nor do they keep their staff very stagnant either (O’Brien’s staff?). Just my sense, but Doeren’s track record seems to be in between Amato and O’Brien with regard to staff changes.
I don’t know the exact reasons why our on field results have improved so significantly and I’m not sure if anyone truly does. However, having a staff that works very well together combined with strong teaching and management skills leads to a team that will be more successful than not.
If someone turns down that money, it is usually because “If Momma ain’t happy. Nobody is happy”. Saw it recently all because “Momma” got in a fight with her parents about Trump and decided against moving back “home”, even after her husband had accepted the job and resigned. Before you feel too sorry for him, he punched out with a 3/4 M + bonus.
gso packbackerParticipantThanks for the lead-off from CD! Born in the north and growing up Catholic (combined with a family connection to Hesburgh) made cheering for Notre Dame all but a given. Those days are long forgotten and I think this NC State team is ready to reward us.
I think we cover the spread here, but a W hinges upon winning the turnover battle or hitting a couple of special/trick plays.
gso packbackerParticipantNorte Dame???
Perhaps McCallum is not referring to the University, but is instead offering us some sort of coded message regarding our match-up in South Bend this weekend.
All I can unravel is something like “North give me” or “do not give me” so I am left in a quandary. It seems as though he has only given us a partial message, thus leaving us frustratingly distant from revealing his prescient commentary.
Sorry, channeling my inner McCallum. ๐
