Ah,yes. The familiar aroma of diesel and disinfectant, perfume to the traveling baller.

I played my college summer baseball in the Shenandoah Valley League. In 1974 it was for a team out of Charlottesville. We were housed in a block of 3 bedroom apartments, which were very nice digs…furnished, too. Our immediate neighbors were comprised of UVa jocks attending summer sessions, one of whom was a guy by the name of Scott Gardner, starting QB and pitching staff ace. We knew each other.

In the last week of July, our season was over, having failed to make the playoffs. My 2 roomies made quick getaways, pretty much followed by the rest of the club. I had a different plan. It wasn’t the end of the month yet, I liked the town, there was no immediate rush to get back to Raleigh, so I decided to ride out a weekend. No one said I couldn’t, and besides, there was this enchanting young lady that worked in the UVa athletic offices…and me with an apartment to myself for the weekend. It all sounded like a good idea.

Thanks for reminding me exactly when and where Randle was at that time. My first recollection of a State-ECU game was the fall of 70 when I had returned to finish after the Army. I lived off campus, but one of my roomie’s had a Meredith girlfriend and she “fixed me up” with a friend of hers that was a senior at ECU…Had a great time at the game, sat in the ECU student section, while State beat up on Carlester Crumpler, Sr. and crew. Had a great time with the young lady and we saw each other for several months after that…She did have State connections because her little bro was a wrestler for the Wolfpack. My major hatred for Randle came later and a good bit of it was listening to him babble on the radio in Virginia when I was up there deer hunting…There is some major bashing on radio leading up to the UVA-VT game too. Jeez, there’s a really ugly song they used to play about Beamer…

I’m guessing Pat Dye was there by the time I got to grad school, and that’s what I was thinking…Never liked that jerk either.

CD, I had my FB coach confrontation with John McKissick, the Summerville, SC Legend…I guess I was older cause I basically told him to shove it! And was backed up by the college AD the next morning.

Sunday morning, my friend and I were shocked from sleep by this persistent, angry sounding bang on the front door. PO’ed,I rolled out of the sack and opened the front door to a blinding blast of sunlight. “What?!”

“What the hell are you doing in my building?”
Because of the sunlight I couldn’t make out the voicer, but I sure could the tone. I went out the door, closing it behind me. About the time my eyes focused on this rather stocky middle aged man,an arm went to the door. I blocked it. In turn I got damn strong shove to the chest, and a confusing glimpse of facial recognition. Coach Sonny Randle? What the hell was he doing up here?
Then it hit me. He was here, because he was no longer in Greenville, dummy. He had taken the HC job at UVa! “Now Coach,”I said.”I have plans to leave later this afternoon.”
The crooked fingers trying to poke holes in my chest had other plans.

    I got this major predicament.
    A) First and foremost, I have this very sweet girl who now walks the same work halls with this lunatic frothing at the mouth, that is about to be compromised, potentially, seriously.
    B) This NC State baller is about to get into a physical altercation with a major college HC.
    I ain’t likin’ them apples.

    “Coach. Give me an hour.”

“I’ll give you 15 seconds.” And with that, he’s planted another in my chest and through the door. He strides down the hall to the back bedrooms. Vacant. He marches toward my room, on past the bathroom (door closed? Hmmm.)
He gets to my room and it’s empty, said for my belongings.(Good girl.) Sonny spotted a hamper full of freshly washed clothes, snatched it,stomped to the front yard, and slung it.(What a dick, but how am I gonna get her out cleanly?)

Out of nowhere comes another voice.
“Coach. I got this. I know (CD.) He’s cool. Let me handle it.” Scott. My man Scott Gardner. Randle looks at him, sneers to me, looks back at Scotty, and then his watch.

“I’ll be back in a couple of hours. Make sure he’s gone in one.”

The very first day back to the Case Center, I received a message. Willis needs to see you…now. I knew…Sonny. Sonny #%&*# Randle.

So…I don’t have riotous Pirates in my past and when I think about the incident that July, I don’t put Randle and UVa together.
ECU spawned his career. That’s where I connect him. Yeah. I guess I’d be happy to jack a hind leg after all.

FYI, carrying concealed is a pain in the backside, particularly with a large framed gun…I have a 1911 and only because “I wanted one”…The smaller, the better to me, but it’s still a pain..but then again, I’ve had a 9mm tapped on the side of my head by someone who is serving life for murder.

But for those who “can’t pull the trigger”, you really shouldn’t carry and that’s not a knock on your manhood…maybe those of us who “served” are hardened to it, but that’s not a 100 percenter.. I’ve been comfortable around guns all my life with folks who can handle responsibly. But I have little tolerance for those who cannot handle responsibly and are dangerous.

Since this is a garden thread, what is the weapon of choice for Copperheads?

I had romas coming out of my ears but other varieties seemed to struggle also. Had quite a few plants that just died. I had chalked that up to not getting much natural water (rain) in both July and August (less than 3 inches in each month) and I had to water quite a bit which was easier in the beds. Some of my cukes growing in the same beds died too but my yield was high there until the lack of rain set in.

Good info on the Romas…I stopped growing them and tried Cherokee Purples w/o much success the last two years…Maybe I need to go back to Romas…

I am really quite alright with it, ya know. The Wolven leg hike to cover a Pirate scent thing…wish I had the same instinct. I suppose that if I had not been living on the West Coast at the time of the goalpost stunt, that sense would have been developed.

Canines have excellent memories. Today is travel day, with a 2 hrs. bus ride to enemy territory. Some will kill time and settle a new anxiousness with music, some with a book, ah let’s be real…the current Pack will be on information and communication devices. Others may just kick back and let the mind take a stroll.

Sonny Randle got his coaching chops at ECU in the early 70’s, my time. By most anecdotal accounts, he was a mean one, an arrogant, miserable, tough guy task master. That was the word.

I would find out for myself, the truth behind the scuttlebutt.
    The bus ain’t here, yet.

Yea, I moved from Raleigh to Wonderful Winterville in the fall of 75 and started grad school at ECU in the spring quarter of 76. I was not a happy camper listening to their BS nor Randle(who I always thought was a babbling idiot)!

I’ve got Glocks, S&W’s, Rugers, but my honest to gosh favorite 380 is a Bersa Firestorm…I also have 22 cal on the same frame and practice with the cheaper 22 cal ammo. It’s an easy auto to take down/clean and fun to shoot. Less money that the Glocks and others and just as reliable.

Gardening was a total disaster this year…Too many days of 90 plus degree heat and very little rain. The only thing that has produced has been some peppers..

^Must be Clem’s Son’s engineers fault! We have a traffic circle just south of us here in Weddington that has worked quite well for years…think the prior assessments that they must fit the location and traffic volume are dead on.

I would agree to a point on Clempson engineers. I found another masterpiece screw up yesterday at the Hwy 160 exit to Ft. Mill. But, re the roundabouts…do all of you drive Toyota Prius’s? My F150 takes up two lanes.

In the proper setting (not Hillsborough street) they work quite well. The problem is they are usually not installed until the level of traffic greatly exceeds what can be reasonably handled. In a town near here they have solved some huge problems but the level of traffic is much more reasonable for them. In that case they were the right idea.

One of these days, I’m going to stop and show you guys a roundabout that SCDOT put on Highway 401 between Darlington and I-20. They took an intersection with little traffic except on race day and one that you could see for 3/4 mile left and right and put a roundabout there…Makes no sense..

There’s another in the middle of a back road on Sutton Road(1 exit north after the Catawba River Bridge past Rock Hill). The backroad comes into the backside of Baxter Village…Poorly marked and you’ll run all over it in the dark. Again, they created a traffic hazard where there wasn’t one beforehand.

If you’re an engineer and admit to ever recommending a “roundabout”, you should be committed to “a facility”. People can’t drive those things with one hand on their Iphone!

Charlie Frazier invented those hoping that the Yankee invasion of Hilton Head would be thwarted…However, they just got lost and stayed there!

A simple photo ID requirement would likely stand up. I don’t get how early voting makes fraud easier. In Texas you can bate anywhere in the county during the two weeks prior to Election Day. There’s an electronic notification that you have voted so you can’t have somebody drive around to 3 or 4 polling places trying to vote multiple times. You can vote without a voter registration card……..by showing a photo ID.

Whoever authored the NC bill deserves a swift kick in the nuts.

Seems like there is “way too much overreach” in a lot of legislation coming out of Raleigh and agree it’s not just one party. Just “same old, same old”, win at all costs by either party…Sorta like what happens with UnC sports!

I had just about finished the long version of how this played out and how no one seems to even understand the facts, politics, and how this thing played out…and fat fingered the post 2 sentences from being finished.

I’m going to put it in Word, copy and paste, but if you cannot see how screwed up and “transparent” the behind the scenes activities are, then you need to go back to the third grade.

Crux, if there was no Pat McCrory, there would not be an NBA or Arena in Charlotte!!! This is a pure Democrat and Republican thing with him caught in the middle! Blame Berger, Blame Cooper, and shove a shovel up Jennifer Roberts backside, but Pat and a couple of other Charlotte City Councilman were responsible for getting the NBA back(with the help of some Charlotte money, not Rawleigh money).

Christie and Junior hit it out of the park. Time to give Hillary an orange jump suit.

For the record, I had a top secret NATO clearance. To get that I had to sign a statement of understanding for the FBI. I have all ideas she did too simply because that’s the way it works. My bet is that thing is sitting in Comey’s desk and the gag order in place about the investigation prohibits anyone in the FBI from releasing that information. But then again she is Hillary and the rules don’t apply to her so she could have blown off the FBI and not signed it.

But she did lie under oath to Congress which is a felony.

I spent 3 years at NSA, had everyone of those top clearances and wore the “color badge” to prove it. Yep, Yogi, “she knew exactly” what she was doing…Frankly, there’s a firing squad out there waiting for several of them to practice marksmanship!

Apparently Lou is walking around with a Crown Royal bag…And the media “assumes” there’s a bottle inside. My bets on a couple of decks of cards, a rabbit, and some other tricks.

But we are talking about the Liberal Media…Bill is apparently yearning for the “Days of Yore” and the “one party system” in NC where the Easley’s can be corrupt and fix the court systems. Funny, how it’s different when the opposite is happening. Again, I ask, who is to blame, the politician or the people who keep electing clowns.

Stick.. you need to buy a “reel” mower for that ‘muda grass..

get down to 3/4? and enjoy your your new part time job…

Think I can train my 3 year old grandson to mow with the reel? I used one of those until I was about 13 years old on centipede. My objective was to get the grass to grow. I have my own mowing etc. to deal with so “that’s not my job”!

The straw is still decomposing. I fed the cardboard a lot of nitrogen (which is to stuff that you need to decompose carbon… i.e. cardboard). It went pretty quickly BUT the earlier you get it done the better. The straw really tended to be the sponge that holds the water. I’ve pulled up a few of the corn plants that are finished and there is a lot of straw attached to the roots and it’s pretty moist. There are things in how I did it that go fast and others go slow. I figure it will probably take at least 24 months for the total cycle to take place. After the “season” I plan to turn the middle of the beds up a bit to see what is transpiring underneath and to determine if I need to do anything to feed the beast so to speak. I got a pile of hardwood mulch from tree trimmers this summer that I used as mulch a bit that will be mixed in this fall.

I’ve been playing with the compost tea using grass clippings, yard debris, vegetable scraps, etc. Making small quantities in a 5 gallon bucket so the mosquitoes don’t breed. Veg plants and roses really seem to like it when they get a drink. Let the bucket cure for a couple of weeks and it smelled like the barn at Keeneland.

Or maybe go here (https://filetea.me/default/) and drag and drop photos then paste link on here, that is, if you don’t mind others downloading them. Let me know if this works, if not, I might try to figure out my login info for my spam email account and you can send it there.
