I wonder how much Markel’s suspension played into that?

Didn’t know about Markel’s suspension. Still into football with recruiting and the bowl game coming up. I’m not too swift at “mental multitasking.” Honestly I don’t get into basketball much until after the Christmas break. Apparently neither does the team. 😉

BTW wife is a UNC-G grad. Didn’t need all the fist-pumping and comments after the game.

Did you know??? Emily Lou Harris is a UNC-G grad also. Was there at same time as Jane.

    Horrendous loss.

Maybe AZ the Pack was sleeping a bit but I will say the Pack UNC-G was right there always. Poise, big plays and AZ the Pack got really frustrated with a team who they considered not their equal standing toe to toe. Great game to watch win or lose but the Pack UNC-G simply played better in this game.

Grey, yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the death of my grandfather who raised me. He’s buried in Arlington. I think every kid should have to visit there before graduating from high school. The graves of the unknown soldiers are awe inspiring.

Yogi, Thank you for sharing about your grandfather and Arlington.

Viking out did themselves making our time there special. Among other things they arranged for a local woman to give a little talk giving some details of the cemetery. Her father had been a gardener at the cemetery for 40 years. They had all the veterans stand to be acknowledged while the played our National Anthem with the bell chimes in the monument. Last they gave each of us a rose to place on a grave — a simple gesture but surprising touching.

The restaurant (I had to get that in here) was indistinguishable except for the courtesy the staff showed the mostly American members of the tour. The realize were it not for the mostly Americans who died on the beaches of Normandy they would be speaking German, not French.

I grew up playing backyard football, baseball and dirt-court basketball. I was introduced to soccer at PE in HS. After 3 or 4 minutes of soccer I was panting for air and my tongue was hanging out. That was when I discovered football was the game for me — 5 seconds of exertion and a half a minute of rest. The all American sport. 😉

For the average football player the best skill was in our genes — being big and strong and able to push other people around. Basketball was the tall guys sport. Baseball and watching grass grow were about equal in cardio respiratory value. Oh sure, you might have to run hard for 90 feet. I forgot swinging a 32 ounce bat 30 to 50 times over a period of 3 or so hours. I can hear the wheezing now.

Soccer has them all beat for exercise value. And contrary to what some would have you believe a big field in not required for 5 year old-kids to enjoy skill development — unless you have no imagination. Put a few cones or tee-shirts on the ground and make up games for the kids to play. You do the games and I can just about guarantee the kids will be begging to play with you.

But there’s the rub. Lard-arsed adults can’t play a game that entails a little running. The best exercise we get is typing about food on a sports message board. 😉

This oughtta stir up some some stink…
The best dining experience — taste, variety, presentation and service — I ever had was on a Viking river cruise. My first was a one week cruise from Paris to Normandy and back with interesting stops along the way. Also the 2 week cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. Same high quality on both cruises.

I got so tired of really good food, I ate at home for a week when we got back. 😉 (just kidding)

Non food related aside: Seeing and hearing about the American cemetery in Normandy with over ten thousand Americans service men buried there was an unbelievable experience. The memory still moves me to tears.

When I think of good seafood, I think about Faircloth’s beside the bridge going into Wrightsville Beach. Of course it’s been closed over 50 years since the tore it down to put in the new bridge.

Capt Stanley’s in Garner. I seen Chuck in there a few times.

Can’t remember the name of it but it’s a Mexican rest. a few miles north of Santa Fe. The best Guacamole I ever tasted made right at the table. I could make a meal out of it.

    Sample question:

“Why does Wake Forest, a team we finished ahead of in the ACC, and a team we’d at least triple in ticket sales, get to go to Charlotte and we have to go 2,000 miles to the Sun Bowl?”

What we/you deserve makes no difference to bowl selection committees. They are looking for the most attractive match-up they can arrange. Bottom line:Teams go to the bowls where they are invited. There is some selection order or sequence set by whom, I don’t know.

There are some preset deals such as the ACC deal with the Orange Bowl and some gentlemen’s agreements or so I hear. Other than those deals there are no “rights” to bowls. In the context of bowl match-ups your/our conference record matters not. Many years ago ticket sales were important considerations. Not so much with the TV money coming in. I’m sure there are opinions out there about this aspect of bowl selection.

Bowl selection is somewhat like the NFL or NHL draft. Bowls know pretty much the pool of teams available before they make their selection but they make it when their time comes up. We can speculate on why the Bowl A didn’t invite us but we can be sure that in the opinion of the selection committee it was the best possible match-up for the bowl.

The only thing we can be sure of is our opinion doesn’t matter nor apparently does our lobbying the ACC office.

If the Cheats were in the playoffs… would you want to keep it in the “family”?

Unless we are scheduled next year to play the Tide, the Dogs, the Sooners, Badgers, or the Buckeyes I’m going to go with the Tigers.

    Mr. Glenn is:
    1. a yankee from Philly
    2. a lawyer
    3. a Tarhole graduate
    4. a Know-It-All
    5. ALL of the above…

What’s to like about that combo?

    next to nothing

It’s fun to speculate who will be back next year. I thought if Finley and Hines had big numbers in a bowl with a name opponent that might be enough to go pro with their other accomplishments to date. Can’t wait to hear the nfl feedback. Now that it’s the sun devils who knows.

Not saying you are wrong just presenting a different point of view… One game rarely makes a significant difference in draft status. Finley’s body of work will be a bigger factor IF he decides to enter the draft. He didn’t play well in cold weather. Another year could dispel those cold weather doubts.

If Finley leaves… Leary will be starting by the time the ACC part of the schedule rolls around.

I hear Leary is over 8 feet tall and can run a 3.8 50.

Oh, you’ve seen his film. 😉

And he leaps tall buildings with a single bound…

We have a pretty good class coming in. The Wilson kid could be really good and Person and Pennix could very well be the running back additions we really need to bookend with Hines.

You may have left off the most important recruit in the 2018 class, QB Devin Leary. If Finley enters the draft this spring, Leary could be the starting QB by the time the ACC part of the 2018 schedule rolls around.

Interesting enough, Leary gave up playing baseball his HS senior year to participate in a weight training program (add weight and muscle) that will prepare him physically for college football. He is a 4-star who excelled at the Nike Elite QB camps. He has a cannon arm that is accurate. Hits receivers in stride on deep balls, etc.

Same size as Chubb when Chubb graduated from HS.

Was Chubb returning punts, too? Lot’s of kids are the size of Chubb but few have Wilson’s speed to go along with that size.

The real question is: can we fire Hux now that Wilson has committed?

    Grey…

I’d upgrade our OC first, and then spend what’s left…
recruiting some Amerson type DBs and a Field Goal Kicker….

    just one man’s opinion….

We’ve recruited some Amerson type DBs. We just haven’t landed many. Amerson type DBs and Lamar Jackson type QBs are some of the toughest recruiting targets to land. The competition for these is fierce.

“recruiting … a Field Goal Kicker….” We have one of the top kickers in the country, Chris Dunn committed in the 2018 class. BTW it hasn’t been too many years since nearly all teams used preferred walk-on kickers.

After finishing with the best conference record in decades, firing the OC is hard to justify. What’s the justification? Our fan base doesn’t understand some (or most) of his play calls. I don’t understand many of them either but that doesn’t make his calls wrong. It only means I don’t understand the play calls. I piss and moan about running through the middle — just before Hines breaks 2 long TD runs through the middle.

Drink is a young coach — very young in experience. Doeren is dealing with hiring a staff with a limited budget. We have a mix of good experienced coaches and a couple of very young coaches with potential. Look at the offensive coaches: Drink is not in this alone.

Des Kitchings: Assistant Head Coach for Offense/Running Backs
Dwayne Ledford: Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator
George McDonald Wide Receivers/Passing Game Coordinator

I wish we had a Lincoln Reilly for our OC but we don’t. Doeren is using a young OC and some good, experienced assistants. Hopefully the experience of his elders will rub off and he will soon be calling plays I understand. 😉

I’m just hoping the DEAL including some real money for top shelf assistants….

$750K to be distributed per Doeren’s discretion. Don’t know if that includes the money for the 10th coach soon to be OKed.

Most folks want an up-grade in our DC. That would be my druthers along with absolutely keeping Ledford and McDonald.

If what I’m hearing is accurate, I was wrong about DD’s character. Right now I feel like the wife who just found her husband of 5 years chasing skirts.

If the Ole Miss story is true, you won’t have to read any more crap from me about DD being a man of his word. As far as I’m concerned if you can’t walk the talk, take a walk.

    I’m done.

Anyone got any ideas or know why Brent Venables’ name isn’t in the mix? Looks to have great potential.

Venables doesn’t want to be a head coach. Likes working with the players without the BS of a HC.

I said 8-4 (5-3). S. Carolina was a bad loss. Wake at Wake was always a toss up game, but I thought it’d break our way.

If losing to an 8-4 (5-3) SEC team is a “bad loss,” we have a new status for NC State football. That’s my ‘half-glassed’ point of view. 😉

Grey I know we dont agree, but I do love your glass half full mentality.

    Thanks.

To be honest about it, I don’t really mind glass half empty mentalities. Insisting on half-empty mentality as the only valid vision of the future, I do mind.

I prefer the half-full mentality as it seems to to be the more positive point of view.

Is the season over already? Seems like just a few weeks ago that we were in shock over loosing to SoCar.

I don’t whine over losses like the WF loss. I remember stealing one from FSU when they fumbled at the goal line not too many years ago.

Speaking of FSU they are always loaded with 4 and 5-star recruits — yet some of us want to discount our win because Fisher chose to play a freshman at QB. They had other QBs to choose from.

We are losing quite a few seniors, true, but so are most other teams. Contrary to popular opinion losing seniors does not always make a team weaker. We will not know until October of so in 2018 if we are stronger or weaker as a team.

We will be losing Adams off the O-line. That big-arsed Joshua Fedd-Jackson, #66, who replaced Joe Skulthorpe after he was injured, helped open the holes that Hines ran through to seal the win.

Our D-line likely won’t have the depth that we had this year but still will be more than adequate. We will have our “Winter Practice” (3 weeks between now and our bowl game), Spring Practice and Fall Camp to develop the 2018 D-line.
