This whole “some people can just just choose to be ignorant instead of diving deeper & understanding the chain of events.

I think you will find that some people choose the interpretation that makes somebody wrong — that cuts them down. Case in point DD asking fans to be back in their seats at the start of the 3rd quarter saying that the team needed us. The truth is a long way from what DD is regularly accused of saying by people who know better.

When it comes up in conversation, I ask where did Russell graduate from and say he was a grad student at Wisconsin.

“Ga Southern was also very avergage in their conference.
It was a win. We needed it. But don’t make it out to be something it wasn’t.”

Agreed Wulfpack. Just countering the stupid notion that GSU were ‘no-name cupcakes.’ With us being 3-9 you could say that GSU was scheduling ‘name cupcakes.’

I know it’s politically incorrect to mention this but what would be the reaction if 15 or 20 (or even 4) white boys beat a black student unconscious?

Williams said in the paper regarding Fedora keeping the QB starter from the media until the last minute, “Coach likes to keep things under cover.” What a effing surprise.

“The goal this year is to not dig this program into a deeper hole. Losing to no-name teams is terrible for recruiting. If you schedule cupcakes you better beat them. The jury is still out on DD but he continues to underwhelm.”

So who said the goal this year was to not dig this program into a deeper hole? The only person I’ve heard say that is punkalum44. The coaches and players are working their tails off — the coaches recruiting and the players in the weight room — to build a foundation for this program to grow on.

This “no-name cupcake” won 6 National Championships before moving to the FBS division. They also beat Florida of the SEC last year. Last year they averaged 360 yds rushing and rushed for over 400 against UF. It’s best to judge football teams by their accomplishments rather than by their name.

jrcox4, I posted this on another thread:

About “the line” not making excuses for our play but just to point out the line may have been closer than it appears, We missed on 2 sure touchdown throws (open in the end zone) and dropped an easy interception. Also our LB was tackled from behind — clearly held — as he just missed the tackle on one of their long runs for TD. My point being the breaks of the game greatly contributed to the closeness of the score.

“He did a great job of recruiting last year but I believe this class is rated low so far…this isn’t a knock on kids who have committed but rather some of the misses we have had.”

That is correct. What should be noted is the ratings are partially based on number of commits. At this time we are low on numbers. We ARE in the running for about 10 very good players. Should we be fortunate enough to land some of these, we will rise in the ratings. Related but not pertinent to our recruiting rating, we were second choice on about a half dozen guys who choose to go elsewhere. Not bad for a new coach in the area and a team that did not win but 3 games. I say the future is looking up.

foose, You are so right. That is stupid.

Uniforms don’t win games, athletes do. Uniforms are believed to help in recruiting athletes.

Uniforms are neither stupid nor smart regardless whether we win or lose. Interpreting our uniforms as stupid or in any way derogatory is what’s foolish.

Not sure what the stats mean but some were notable. The much maligned OL allowed 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss and suffered very few penalties. Slight improvement over last year I’d say. Not noted in the stats the OL starters played EVERY snap. Those guys must have done some serious conditioning work since last season.

Wil Baumann averaged 49.7 yds. for 3 punts and we allowed 4.o per return. That’s a 45.7 yard NET punt yardage. Not shabby. Charlie Twitty was a big part of the punt and kick coverage. I feel like a proud grandparent, having had the privilege of coaching Charlie’s dad and coaching with his grandfather. Not surprised at Charlie’s success. His dad was the best athlete I ever coached or ever saw at the youth level.

I have already stated I like the new alternate uniform. I like it so much I would like to see what it would look like in red and maybe in white as well. We could wear that not helmet with the red as well.

Alternate uniforms are a fact of life for pro hockey teams needing revenue. Revenue comes from the sale of team jerseys. NCSU is not a pro hockey team but I wouldn’t be surprised if revenue had something to do with the decision.

Here are some questions (Q), facetious though they might be, found in some preceding comments for which answers might be useful or enlightening. There are also a few statements (S) both misleading and false that have been addressed.

    Q. If you’re going to do the black uniforms, why do you do them for the game that is only on ESPN3? Do you do that to minimize exposure?
    A. Debbie Yow, Deoren’s boss, told him to wear them for a game we were going to win. I’m not sure there is one but this is close enough. Why would we do this for broad TV exposure when the recruits we want to see them will see them? While TV exposure is important for the school, there is no real point in TV exposure for the uniform.

    Q. …tradition is a big thing with us long-time fans. What is wrong with us wearing the red and white?
    A. Nothing wrong with us wearing the red and white. We longtime fans should wear red and white. The recruits and players like the cutting edge black alternate uniform. Adidas probably likes being able to show case a hot, new look and perhaps get some new business. The happier our uniform supplier is the better off we are.

    S. I can’t speak for other Wolfpackers who are in their 60s,
    A. Then you should stop trying.

    S. but to me the black uniforms are more of a fad than they are tradition… <snip> Yes, the uniforms look snazzy, but they aren’t OUR traditional colors. They never will BE our traditional colors.
    A. They are neither fad nor tradition nor traditional colors. They are an ALTERNATE uniform. (Perhaps you should inform yourself of the facts before spouting off.)

    S. And make no mistake about it, that’s what this is about. Erase the memories of the past 25 years.
    A. Even Fowler wasn’t stupid enough to think this. This is a recruiting tool. The proof of the pudding is in the eating – the excitement of our players and recruits here this weekend makes it abundantly clear this is a good move. The uniforms alone will not sway recruits but they will help keep us from being eliminated from consideration by those who like a jazzy uniform.

    S. We might be wearing black this Saturday and every Saturday this fall,
    A. Not likely. We will be wearing the ALTERNATE uniforms 2 times out of 12 and maybe a 3rd time in a bowl.

    S. but unless something drastic happens over the course of this season, it’ll be the same old story- a big-budget school in a power conference, trying to move up into the elite class,
    A. Not sure what the point is about something drastic happening BUT what most State fans want is for us to move up into the elite class. That is the goal of our Chancellor, our AD and all our coaches. The current freshman class and some new recruits are talking it up as well. As far as something drastic happening over the course of this season, most observers of football know is often takes more than 2 seasons to cause a climb to the status of elite.

13OT, I think you have revealed your true colors. You speak like you don’t want us to do the things necessary to move up into the elite class. If you can’t lead or follow, please sir, get out of the way.

“Doeren couldn’t make something special happen as NC State has now come in second for about a half dozen of the top prospects the Pack had targeted.”

Which is about a half dozen more than TOB came in second. Recruiting is like winning: first you lose close (come in second), then you win close, then you win big. I’m not saying ‘wait until next year,’ I’m saying next year we will win the recruiting wars close. Then we will win the recruiting wars big.

Wufpacker, Thanks for a good discussion thread.

Stretching is important for sure but this coach certainly believes in strength training. Strength and Conditioning coach, Jason Veltkampt, may be the most important coach on this staff. I understand we have 2 nutritionists on staff as well. We are bigger, faster and stronger than we were last year. And it’s not just meat, it’s muscle that’s being added. I can hardly believe some of the weight gain in the short time since January when the early enrollees got here. In HS Germaine Pratt reportedly was only eating 2 meals a day and never going to the weight room. The training table and the weight room has made a real difference. He came here at 200 lbs, and is now at 232. That’s a load at safety. He’s been admonished to ‘take it easy’ on the hits in practice.

The DL was where nearly all our defensive troubles began last year and they committed to gaining 15 lbs. each during the off season. We won’t be winning the division championship but we won’t suffer the humilities we suffered last year either.

OT13 may be right but I don’t think even he believes that we are looking at another Tom
    Reed season.

What’s probable and what’s possible are two different animals. We predict what’s probable by looking in the rearview mirror. People in the business of predicting the probable can’t be faulted for predicting 4-8 or 5-7 with 6-6 being a “good” season.

Looking a little deeper is required for seeing what’s possible. Nine early enrollees came in January to get a jump on the season. True freshman are stepping up and winning starting jobs. Others who aren’t starting are being counted on as backups. From what I understand most of the team has taken off season workouts seriously. Weight in the form of muscle is being added — except in those cases where ‘bad weight’ is being replaced by good weight.

I hear what seems to be a burning desire to rectify the 2013 disaster. Those who didn’t make the necessary sacrifices are paying for it. Some didn’t lose the ‘bad weight’ and some didn’t gain the needed weight. Moving down the depth chart is the price. Fortunately for every failure there are 10 successes. The DL was committed to gaining 15 pounds of muscle each. Some gained a lot more. Thank you Jason Veltkampt and your team in the weight room for transforming those fat bodies by putting on muscle and increasing strength. Being bigger, faster, stronger points to our being more competitive and winning more games.

The OL is more athletic, more mobile and deeper than last year. That alone is enough for getting a sense of what’s possible.

Our upper classmen and scholarship players are mentoring our freshmen and walk ons, not hazing them. (Sorry, I just HAD to say it.)

So, I’ve got a choice. Go with the probable and glumly wait around a year or two OR go with the possible and be excited and looking forward to the season. There was the day when I made choices that drug me down. Today I try to make choices that empower me. It empowers me to choose positively.

This post is entirely too serious. I should have stuck with the horse manure, something I know something about.

These kinds of preseason All-ACC teams are amusing.
    * I had to look all the way to the 4th team offense to find Clemson players and then only 2. Anybody think Clemson is that bad offensively?
    * FSU has only 8 players listed spread over the 4 Defense teams. (That’s 2 per team. I don’t believe it. Wait, Yes I do. I forgot who the “expert” is who made this list up.

Don’t know if DD can recruit or coach but it looks like he can hire coaches who can do both. Please coach, don’t let S&C Coach, Jason Veltkampt, get away.

We, State, have a young team but that doesn’t necessarily make it a team without talent and athleticism. *nc’s Ryan Switzer is the projected No. 1 PR but was he even mentioned as a PR last year.

I’m like the little boy who was given a room full of horse manure for Christmas. He started shoveling away while mumbling to himself, “With this much horse manure there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere. Maybe we can find a few ponies in all that HS that TOB left here.

This isn’t the same team that was stumbling around last year. I’m assuming the OL has been coached up. If we can keep Crisp healthy, our whole OL picture will be vastly improved. Tony Adams has good size and quick feet even though he is only freshman. Both guards are capable of pulling. The backs like that. We still are not as deep as I know DD would like us to be but we are getting there. The work VeltKampt and his crew are doing is transforming bodies. The hard work our young men are doing in the weight room is inspirational.

    Enough positive thinking… maybe.

While not starting Street and Davis should see playing time at DE. Pharaoh McKeever has been moved from WR to DE — first time on that side of the ball. Yet he is the 5th DE listed on the Depth Chart. McK weighs 262 and runs a 4.6 40 and still growing. It’s early to say this but the Pack might be returning to those days of dominant DLs in a year or so.

“It’s raining all day today… should that be considered a omen ?<”

The rain held off most of the morning. Is that to considered an omen?

Freshman Safety Germaine Pratt arrived on campus 195 lbs. is now weighing in at 230 lbs. He’s not the only one who’s added muscle/weight.

This team is deeper, bigger and faster than last year. They’ve already fooled some experts here and I predict they will fool quite a few teams before this season’s over. I hope FSU struts into town thinking this will be a blowout win for them.

Has Doeren changed Offensive Coordinators? That’s about the only way major college offenses get changed. Maybe he’s hired Dana Bible as a consultant. He’s as good a drop-back coach as there is available.

I think that DD is just giving our opponents something to think about. It’s more difficult and time consuming to prepare for both implied offences than just the one.

The unanswered question is simply this: is our O-line more adept at blocking for the drop-back passing game than for the spread? by adept I mean ability to get out in front on the spread. Chandler is certainly better suited physically for drop-back.

I guess we’ll know when we read it the paper or on the net since most seem to be staying home.

Do you really want someone on par with Annabelle Vaughn running our entire athletic program?

It’s Annabelle Meyers now. I had a meeting with Annabelle back when Les was AD. If IIRC she did have her ‘good points.’

Last years team was NOT recruited for the no-huddle, spread offense. DD could have tried to build a team around the athletes he had OR he could install his/Canada’s offense and build for the future. The first option may have had a better result with Pete running a pro type offense but the year would be lost as far as getting his/Canada’s offense in. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.

Recruiting is important for optimum results obviously but there are other factors involved in winning. NI won without highly ranked recruits. If State is going to win, we will likely have to do it without highly ranked recruiting classes in the near and perhaps mid-ranged future.

Finally listening to and reading excuses for not attending football games is tiresome. We whine about having to play in the same division as FSU and Clemson and those teams fill the stadium regardless of who they schedule. We can schedule the Ohio States but likely not as home games.

What is an “exciting” game/schedule? We piss and moan about having to play home games against OOC teams other than top 25. Perhaps instead of Georgia Southern, Old Dominion, Presbyterian we would prefer to play Idaho, Bethune-Cookman, and Nevada – those 3 “exciting” OOC teams that Florida State beat by a combined score of 196 to 27. Those poor FSU fans got griping rights. WTF? 80 to 14, 64 to 7, 52 to 6? Not much excitement there. What we “fans” really expect and want is wins that vs. top 25 that are exciting and we want them now!
I realize after reading the comments above that no one is serious but is merely engaging in some spring time pissing and moaning but the fact is nobody who is anybody is “excited” about playing NC State away from home — if at all.
I get the complaints about the heat but complaining about the heat at an August football game is like complaining about going to your mother-in-laws for Sunday dinner.

So what should the Pack do? Sit on their asses and “just win, baby?”

I don’t know what the recruits like or don’t like but this helmet design blends the traditional and the new, high tech look. And what’s with the motorcycle put down? Should new designs be shown on the hood of some made-in-Japan POS?

We could pick apart any damn thing our Athletics Department put out if we wanted to — or were stupid enough to do. We had a turn with Colonel Klink at the helm. How’d that work out? So our new coach rides up on a Harley, wearing black jeans, a leather jacket and sporting a Pack in Black helmet. I like it better than the black uni with pink numbers and trim. And I like a lot of other things he is trying.

We lost them all but we were in the fight most of the time. I think I’m going to give the new helmet design and the 2014 team a chance before I piss and moan too much.

If bank robbers ‘apologized’ for robbing banks, would they be asked to return the money stolen? Or would their proclamation that ‘they had put systems in place’ to see that it didn’t happen again suffice?
