GreywolfParticipant
They were a run first offense, but hit 60% of their passes.
Say what? “Had you rather go to New York or by bus?” What does being a run first offense have to do with completion percentage? WE could be considered to be a ‘run first’ offense and our completion percentage is around 70% or was before last night.
GreywolfParticipantfoose,
One of our Pack 15 commits has Devon Hester speed. Clocked at but not verified to be a 4.25 40. We may be recruiting some speed, don’t cha think?GreywolfParticipantJiggy,
Your analysis overlooks what is critical to evaluating the first 4 game performance. In all 4 games the coaches were using those games as “pre-season” learning experiences. Each game revealed what needed to be worked on or developed. Did you notice last night that we threw the deep ball, something we hadn’t done well if at all before? It has been duly noted by many that the best athletes on the team are from the 2 most recent recruiting classes. Our coaches wisely have been bringing along slowly but surely the freshmen additions to this team. IMNSHO it would have been disastrous to have thrown them in the first games.
We are also playing it close to the vest regarding over revealing what we are doing well. The shifting we did so well in the USF game (their DC called it ‘Window dressing’ and said it totally confused their defense) we minimized or used different sets last night. As others have said before the PC game, we would be plain vanilla so as to not give away our ‘goodies’ to FSU and the rest of the conference.
As far as being prepared to play is concerned, this team is not the same team that we saw in the GSU and ODU games. The “average or below average” ODU team is, IIRc is 3-1. Only by shooting themselves in the foot (kinda like Clemson last night) did GSU lose to GT who in turn beat VT in their house. USF in most certainly does not have an incredibly bad offense or defense either for that matter. They may have some problems just as many other teams but they are most definitely not “bad”.
You say our DL was pushed back 3 and 4 yards by a very small PC OL but only averaged 2.7 yards per rush. Were they tripping and falling over their own feet? FYI a smaller, quicker, well coached OL can do things to open running lanes that larger slower OL cannot do. Ever wonder why our Ali Kassam at 34o lbs. is not playing?
Early season comparative analysis is a dangerous game. For some reason you and a few others seem to think the objective of a football team in the early season should be to do its best to impress the fans and critics. Not happening at NCSU. Check out Coach Doeren’s coaching resume. His 2 years spent as a graduate assistant at USC wasn’t just something to do. The foundation of his coaching philosophy was built there. USC by and large is not a bad place to learn how to be a head football coach.
GreywolfParticipantIt was a PC player who was injured on the Dayes TD reception, a thing of beauty, BTW. If Dayes was injured it was during the celebration thing they do these days.
winless again in conf play
At this point I’d say, “undefeated in conference play.” đ
GreywolfParticipantAnybody see the N&O Sports page headline? “Purple Pain” For once I wasn’t complaining about the boys from Brokeback Hill getting more than their fair share of ink and pics. As a matter of fact I enjoyed reading about the holes and their wonderful, Top 25 football team very much, thank you. The ‘holes’ from ‘Brokeback Hill’ has a nice ring to it, don’t ya think? Enough gloating for the morning.
GreywolfParticipantOnce the game starts I’ll be in Section 216, Row R. đ
GreywolfParticipantHelp! I’m looking for the Game Day thread.
GreywolfParticipantHmmm… Concern about the state of NCSU football these days?? OMG are Doeren, Canada and Veldtkamp considering leaving so soon? Look Chicken Little, the sky is falling.
GreywolfParticipantUConn scored and completed its first pass late in 4th qtr. The Bulls won a game that wasn’t as close as the score. UConn gained a whopping 145 yds. — 57 rushing and 88 in the air. In an interview earlier in the week USF’s DC said that NC State ‘window dressed’ USF — meaning that State gave them a look then shifted and the play frequently started before the Bulls were set. Said that this would not happen vs UConn. It didn’t.
FSU can spend some of its practice time next week preparing for that! That and the Wildwolf and whatever else Canada has in mind for them. I wonder what he’ll ‘show’ in the PC game for FSU to ponder.
Not a problem. Coach Canada has more tricks up his sleeve and other wrinkles to put in. We have yet to see either of the 2 WRs that he has alluded to in the Wildwolf . I wonder, considering Bo Hines leading the team in receptions, what’s with Bo’s reduced playing time. Is he practicing something else? Bo played QB in HS when their regular QB got hurt. It doesn’t take a huge imagination to see Bo stepping up to run our offense if JB goes down. Visions of Jordon Lynch dance through my head. We know it won’t be GL. It would be very nice hot to have to burn J McClendon’s red shirt.
I’ve modified my assessment of the power and proficiency of our OL based on what the Bull’s DC said. Our offense is likely not as strong as we looked vs the Bulls. Our defense much better than we looked in the first 2 games.
Too late to go back to bed and too early to stay up. Nothing new to read on SFN. Guess I’ll bring in the paper and read that.
GreywolfParticipantOff the subject but I wonder what percentage of 5 star & 4 star recruits in NC are eliminated from NC State recruiting lists because of this kind of thing or advisements from their HS coaches? Or grades? Or is it that we don’t have this in NC?
GreywolfParticipantWonder if Coach has similarly outlined goals for the OC and DC? In turn does the OC/DC have goals for position coaches? If yes to these questions, do they have milestones and plans to reach these milestones. Are the practices designed to achieve the milestones and are the game plans similarly targeting achievements, milestones and goals?
Knowing the answers would make evaluating the games different would it not? I find it humorous to be criticizing the team/coach/coaches for failing to meet OUR goals when it’s entirely possible that their achievements, milestones and goals are being met. Are the games being viewed as indicators of what we need to work on to achieve our goals?
“Some people ain’t got much food on the table but they got a lot of forks and knives and they gotta cut something.” Bob Dylan said that.
“Everything is exactly the way it’s supposed to be, otherwise it would be different.” I said that.
GreywolfParticipantryebread,
I can get most of what you say and wouldn’t argue it especially if Gott is demanding the suits. I’d have guessed demanding managers wear suits was more about looking good or professional than actually being more professional. We’ll never know so I’ll go with your interpretation. I’m from a different era I guess, one where wearing a suit didn’t equate to excellence and professionalism.
I think you missed the point I was making about having to bring in the girls from the Wolfpack Club to get the numbers up to 13. I was just pointing out the difference in the numbers in the old days and now. I wasn’t even saying it was better then, just different. The results were better, however, for Coach Case if winning a national championship qualifies as better.
I don’t remember what the managers wore in Jimmy V’s day, do you? I know Coach V wore a sport coat, not a suit.
Like I said, times have changed but Iâm dragginâ ass keepinâ up. Probably too old to teach new tricks.
GreywolfParticipantRepeated post deleted
GreywolfParticipantProbably more valuable than bruised and battered is the information our coaches will get watching film of both FSU and Clemson. The best scenario would be a close FSU/CU game where both teams pulled out all the stops.
Achieving one of the Wolfpack’s 2014 Team Goals depends on State beating FSU. While many of us are soooo concerned about the “poor” statistics from GSU and ODU games, I suspect the coaching staff has been bringing the team along in preparation for a run at FSU without regard for “looking good” in those games. I further speculate that we have been playing those games like “pre-season games — using them to learn about the team and some newer players.
Reminder of 2014 Goals
1. No off the field distractions that embarrass our team.
2. Fall term team gpa of 2.5 or higher.
3. Top 3 in ACC turnover margin.
4. Top 3 in ACC in special teams.
5. Top 3 in ACC for least penalties.
6. Earn post season opportunity and win.
7. Go undefeated at home.
8. Beat UNCGreywolfParticipantThe student managers are wearing suits and ties to attend to their duties during the games that is somewhat pretentious IMNSHO. To seem rather than to be? During a TO it looks like a cast of thousands standing around the team. Hey! Back up. Give those boys some air.
I admit to being an old fart who remembers The Old Grey Fox wearing a (of course) grey suit. Don’t remember what the assistant coach wore but the managers wore polo shirts and khaki pants. Might have been 2 assistants but Coach Case would have had to bring out the girls in the Wolfpack Club office to get the group up to 13.
Times have changed but I’m draggin’ ass keepin’ up.

I still got splinters in my ass from sitting on those old wooden seats in Riddick. When Earl came to Raleigh, I was in the 11th grade. His son, Bob, was a good friend. So I join you in going back aways.I am optimistic about Coach DâŚbut it looks like when we get a GOOD coach, he is then lured awayâŚ.
I have often had the same kind of thoughts OR is it, those thoughts had me? There are a few differences now than then. Our chancellor, and it all begins here, knows the value of having a very good football team and is willing to pay to have one. Our AD is committed to excellence in athletics and university excellence in athletics begins with football (OK, and basketball). When the winning starts, and it will, the money will start to flow. The cheaters are starting to lose their best fan base, and I don’t mean Wal-Mart fans. Who wants to be associated with cheating, academic fraud, the cover-ups and the attitude in general that’s oozing out of the sewer I think of as Brokeback Hill?
And this may be the most important one, we didn’t pick Doeren, he picked us. He vacationed in NC and loved it here. The life style is a fit for him and his family. Think about how quickly Doeren made up his mind about coming here.
It takes me 10 minutes to wipe the grin off my face when I see him and Randy Woodson playing guitar with Scotty McCreery. Doeren is a good old country boy and real family man.
On video I see his oldest son leading the “Strength of the Pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the Pack” chant in the locker room after our wins and I’m thrilled. All men of good character, even coaches, consider their families when they think about taking a new job that requires relocating and if nothing else, Doeren is a man of character. Have you seen the 8 team goals for 2014? No.1 & 2 are “character” goals before it gets to football related goals. The last and not least goal is beat UNC.
When Doeren builds a winning, national caliber program, he’s going to be like Bobby Bowden. He’ll probably raise a couple of successful coaches for sons and then retire here.
Call me an optimist and I may be talking out of my ass. I don’t think so. Like Jimmy V told Sam Esposito, “Think a good thought.”
Go Pack!
GreywolfParticipant“I am on board with the neckties.”
Mr. DOG, I gotta a necktie. Store it in the freezer to keep it from spoiling.
GreywolfParticipantDid I miss something? Did the ACC get a new commissioner?
Swifty ain’t going to do anything to help FSU. That might be hurting the boys at Brokeback Hill
GreywolfParticipantNot vanilla, Mr.Dog. Base. (It’s like vanilla, but little or no taste and used to make milkshakes.)
If after 3 games testing and tweaking in our base defense and base offense, I’ll be surprised if it’s THAT close. Two 2014 Team Goals require beating FSU to be accomplished. I’ve had suspicions that we weren’t seeing our best shot in any of our games. Frankly I don’t think we saw it after Mitchell went down in 2013. Oh, we tried to win but without a full quiver. We could have tried some stuff we do routinely now but we didn’t. Hmmm? Why not.
Two weeks from now I expect to see our best shot.
GreywolfParticipantHopefully we can make a crappy bowl so the recruiters wonât have an empty sales pitch.
Considering the source that’s about what I’d expect. News flash, Doeren and his recruiters aren’t going into homes and making sales pitches, and most certainly they aren’t ‘selling’ bowl trips. Dig up the video of Doeren talking about the families of the recruits. We are loaded with fine young men who honor their parents and grandparents, not a bunch who want to get off and embarrass themselves, the team and the school. There’s a lot going on at Alabama besides going to great bowl games. That’s backwards. Great bowls and NC’s are the result of something, not the cause.
I don’t know what Doeren and his coaches have going on but “selling young men on coming to our school because we are going to the ________________ bowl this year ain’t it. I will say this, the players seem happier than any I have EVER seen. They are enthusiastic, excited, and they sure aren’t acting like a team that finished 3-9 and picked to finish nearly last in the conference this year.
About Cherry and his returning punts. Doeren will not throw him under the bus. Count on this: he will treat Cherry like family. If he does put in another punt returner, it will be after he has a conversation with Cherry. It’s not Cherry I worry about, it’s his teammates who consider him “family” and will quietly revolt over an high-handed treatment like is being suggested in this thread.
Doeren made a man out of Shad. I trust Doeren to be great with Cherry.
GreywolfParticipantPlus the debacle at home last year was one of the âworst of the worstâ, and I hope the players remember.
Classof89, Why on earth would you want the players to remember?
Just the other night I saw Nick Saban on 60 minutes. I just looked up as he was saying that he tells his players not watch the scoreboard, not to worry about anything but executing that particular play to the best of your ability. Of course WTF does he know?
GreywolfParticipantHo hum. BFD
The suits on managers are pretentious. And what’s with the coaches? Frank McGuire look a likes?
Why NC State does not opt for white on noon football games in September baffles me. Not fair? Who cares?
When can we start football threads again? February?
GreywolfParticipantOne of the many things I like about this win and this team is who do you key on? We shut Marlon Mack and the FSU run game was shut down. Shutting down one of our runners is like playing Whack-a-mole. Knock one down and another pups up. Same with receivers.
One thing I found interesting, primarily because I didn’t understand the reasoning behind it, was the OLine was pretty much the first unit throughout. Did the O coaches want to see what Nichols and others could do behind the 1st unit or was it something else? I’m not going to exercise my opinion making machine, I’ll just let Mr. Canada run this offense. But I am curious.
GreywolfParticipantWhile not big ‘name’ games, State has participated in 2 really good football games — if you don’t care who wins. I think, gotta feeling, whatever, the Bulls/Wolfpack game is going to be a good football game. I hope I’m wrong. I hope this is going to be a one-sided, blow-out with the Wolfpack winning going away.
Lately I spend 80% if my time discussing Wolfpack football. The rest I just waste.
GreywolfParticipantThe Wildcat totally concedes the pass, which allows the defenders to know exactly what is going to happen, and ultimately where the ball will start, and most likely stay. The advantages of the spread are effectively conceded by using the Wildcat because the edges are no longer threats. The defenders can all focus on the center of the formation.
ryebread, You’re too young to remember the single wing aren’t you? You can see single wing principles in the Wolf (our Wildcat). The extra blocker isn’t the QB but having the QB flanked out essentially has him be a blocker because he occupies a defender. This is similar to “running off” a corner, i.e., a receiver luring a defender down field in lieu of blocking him.
You say “the edges are no longer threats” and then say “the defenders can all focus on the center of the formation.” Focusing on the center of the formation has the edges be a threat, not eliminate it as a threat. The opposite is true also. The Jet has value if it doesn’t gain a yard because it draws attention of the defense to the edge. Because it is in motion before the snap, defenses have to position to stop it, not just react to it. Thus it opens up the middle. Too bad Bible didn’t apply this principle if he was going to plunge up the middle.
Bible’s offense was from the Old Testament. Canada’s offense is New Testament. (That’s meaningless but is fun to say.) đ
fosse,
You say, “But if you watched closely, the Wolfpackâs DL often âphysicallyâ beat their opponent, but ODUâs OL used the DLâs own physicality against them. For example, letting the DL penetrate but âguidingâ them away from the play. Hard to watch anything closely from the NEZ. lol So I didn’t see this. Much easier to correct than not being physical enough. If not sooner then later. Thanks, that bit was very encouraging to me. Now I pray I don’t have to dig up my old recipes for crow. LOL
