09/28/2014 at 10:57 PM in reply to: The Wildwolf/Wildcat: Weigh in with thoughts and opinions #57553GreywolfParticipantThe deep back in the old single wing (like Wildcat with a direct snap) could run and pass. Not one of our RB’s was recruited with passing ability in mind. We are making do with what we have. I’ve mentioned that Bo Hines played some “gun” WB in HS and he reportedly ran the Wildcat on one play and passed the ball. I expect we will see more of that as the season progresses.
Our coaches seem to think the plays we’ve practiced will work better than anything they could draw up in the dirt. We fans don’t seem to agree with them.
GreywolfParticipantAs to Coach D’s comments, it seemed a little bit paradoxical at the Military Appreciation Game, which was right after the opener, that the PA Announcer told the fans to STAY IN THEIR SEATS during halftime.
Do I need to point out that the PA is not Doeren? I think he is the worst PA in the world BTW.
Here’s what he said copied from the N&O article you cited:
(Giglio’s introductory paraphrasing omitted since it wasn’t quoting what Doeren said)
“The passion that our fan base has, we need them to be in the seats in the third and fourth quarter to be a great team,” Doeren said on Monday at his weekly news conference.
“You win big games in the third and fourth quarter. It’s great to start fast with a big crowd but it’s better to finish with one. That’s an advantage that we need to gain.”Kudo’s to the Team, the Coaches/Staff AND to the Fans. We got a much deserved ATTABOY from Coach D on that one…and this is from the man that chewed us out for NOT being in our seats for the 2nd half last year.
What Doeren said is straight talk and direct but to say this is chewing the fans out? I don’t think so.
Here’s the headline for the story, “NC State coach to fans: Stay in your seats for 2nd half” I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that Headlines are written by Headline writers, not the authors of the articles.
Let’s agree to disagree. You say letting fans know they are wanted and needed in their seats is chewing them out. I say it’s straight talk – one mature adult to another. I like his straight talk in all matters.
GreywolfParticipantAdventuroo, where were you sitting?
Never mind where he was sitting, it’s where he was tailgating that I want to know. 😉
I watched a young lady that was very well endowed stuff 6 mini bottles into her bra (3 on each side) at a neighboring tail gate on Saturday.
09/28/2014 at 7:14 PM in reply to: Let the recruiting gates open – Reggie Gallaspy come on down! #57531GreywolfParticipantGreywolfParticipantI thought Thornton kept the ball too much out of the Wild yesterday. <snip> It’s like any other formation, you have to execute.
Texpack, Hard to argue that last comment but the first has me wondering, how do we know he kept it too much? Thornton was the ‘QB’ when we ran the Wildcat (probably because he ran the Wildcat in High School.) When the hand-off option is not there, he must keep it.
You may remember at the end of the Presbyterian game, Josh Taylor came in and ran the read option with Nichols and was very successfully moving the chains when time ran out — averaging a little over 6 yds a carry keeping it when the Presby D covered the read. Taylor and Nichols are going to be extremely valuable on the Scout team when we play teams that use read option plays. I would guess that McClendon was “Winston” last week.
GreywolfParticipantIt’s time to send NC State Sh!t the way of HWSNBN
WRONG! It’s PAST time. Violators go to the penalty box.
GreywolfParticipantWell almost nothing…
In dealing with faked injuries, institute a rule similar to “Icing” in hockey. The team icing the puck cannot substitute, i.e., take advantage of the icing, but the other team can.
Translated to football, the team on defense with the injured player cannot substitute except for the injured player. Attempts to ‘cheat’ by violating this rule get a 15 yard un-sportsman like conduct penalty. Sure the defense gets the benefit of additional rest but no other advantage. To make it really costly, the injured defensive player cannot return to the game during this possession. That should slow down faking injuries.
No restrictions apply to the team on offense just as it is now.
GreywolfParticipantNothing really to add… I would LMAO if Jacoby was the 1st Team All-Conference QB and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner was 2nd or 3rd.
Any chance we can make it 5 40+ point games this weekend?
GreywolfParticipantand this is from the man that chewed us out for NOT being in our seats for the 2nd half last year.
He most certainly did NOT chew us out for not being in our seats for the 2nd half. He DID tell us the team needed our support and requested we be in our seats at the beginning of the 3rd Qtr. IIRC After he was informed about the heat and sun and older fan’s situation he acknowledged the risk.
Adventuroo, you seem like a good State fan and I don’t think you would intentionally misrepresent what Coach Doeren said. So before you regurgitate crap others have made up, please check your facts. Granted it was reported on SFN that he chewed our asses out, but SFN corrected that and IIRC then reported what he actually said.
Let’s give the man a break, Okay? He coached at Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and other places where the sun and heat are not factors and keep fans out of their seats. Imagine seeing the half-empty seats on the east side when he came out for the second half the first time. That must have been a shock. It’s notable that he was in the shade and couldn’t see behind him the full west side seats also in the shade.
Hell, I hope as fans we DO realize the value of having fans supporting the team at the beginning of the second half when the opps come out firing, trying to grab the momentum. We need to be there for the team in all the games, not just the No. 1 team in the country.
I’m just glad he didn’t know half the missing were in the parking lots getting drunk. -;)
09/28/2014 at 12:48 PM in reply to: Let the recruiting gates open – Reggie Gallaspy come on down! #57498GreywolfParticipantAbout his recruitment, “I’m looking for a team that I’m comfortable with that’s family-oriented,” Gallaspy said, “where I can spend three or four years and be comfortable on campus, off campus, in the classroom, outside the classroom.”
Oh, and I thought he would come because he might get to go to a mid-level bowl next year.
Gallaspy just ran for 354 yards and 4 TDs on Friday night and 1600 yards in half a season so far. What does he have to do to be a ***** rated back, be the top producer in the concession stands while he plays? I guess the competition must not be too great, eh?
There are some other great prospects at the game:
09/28/2014 at 12:16 PM in reply to: The Wildwolf/Wildcat: Weigh in with thoughts and opinions #57496GreywolfParticipantIn the heat of the second half, it seemed we were playing Canadian ball because we only had two downs to get a first down after they direct snapped the ball to a runner for a yard. What were the results of those plays for the entire game and what is the opportunity cost of those plays.
Wasn’t Jacoby Brissett great? Scrambling, shedding tacklers, until the defense caught up to him and the ball got knocked out of his hand twice trying to make a play? This is not criticism of Brissett. Nobody knows more than Jacoby that you have to protect the ball. My point is the same great defensive play that stuffed the Wildwolf blew up 2 “regular” plays for game altering fumbles.
Without the Wildwolf plays, Jacoby wouldn’t have lasted through the 3rd quarter. He was in on 86 offensive plays and those scrambles take a lot out of him. IMNSHO the Wildwolf is a better alternative than Leatham in at QB to give Brissett a breather. As it were he cramped up and had to come out after a scramble at a time when we needed him on the field.
We are being smart with the Wildwolf in that we are getting both Thornton and Dayes on the field at the same time.
Just as incomplete passes do not invalidate the forward pass, low or no gains do not invalidate the Wildwolf and we did score vs. FSU at least once, maybe twice. The read option we run is a well designed play tough to defend. Both Shad and Matt run it well. A no or low gain doesn’t mean they didn’t read it well either. Could be that the number 1 team in the nation, the one that held Clemson to 14 points defended it well.
Watching Samuels in person for the first time was awesome because that kid has talent. He makes people miss and then he can drop the hammer on a defender. As stated on the game thread, FSU mauled Samuels on obvious passing plays going his way. Would the outcome of the game been different if Samuels or someone else had a shot in lieu of one yard gains.
I hope you are not saying we lost because we ran the Wildwolf and only gained a yard a couple of times.
I trust that our coaches are trying to get Samuels and every other player the ball where they can do something positive with it. You said it: FSU mauled Samuels on obvious passing plays going his way. Seriously, Fast, what has that got to do with the Wildwolf being effective or not?
GreywolfParticipantthe plays we have for our running game are stupid
Yeah, Real stupid. Before we played the number 1 team in the country, we were only rushing for about 250 yards per game with these stupid plays.
GreywolfParticipantJust got in from the game. I agree with Mr. DOG, Doeren definitely in over his head. And Canada? Well he should stick to Mid-majors. 😉
GreywolfParticipantThe Wolf
‘Now is the Law of the Jungle—
As old and true as the sky;
And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper,
But the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk,
The Law runneth forward and back—
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf,
And the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.’Rudyard Kipling

GreywolfParticipant^
I, for one, am terribly offended by your remarks… Greywolf…
Nobody ever called my wife a ‘farm girl’…Yes, bill, but recall the kind of farm it was, did anybody ever call her a cherry?
(Swear on a stack of Almanacs, I’m just fooling. I never knew your wife, and for sure, not in the biblical sense of the word.)GreywolfParticipantThe above conversation is SO NOT PC.
GreywolfParticipantGreywolf I am afraid to ask which one you gave up first? Or did you stop hunting to screw?
Of course I was hunting something to screw. If you were at State in the early 60’s you’d know it won’t easy to find at the college. You had to go to the State College cherry farm, sometimes called St. Marys, to do any real hunting.
GreywolfParticipantYou must totally ignore basketball, baseball, and bass fishing to get to that high a percentage.
Stick, Each sport in its season. Not many fish in that pond in Pullen Park. I learned to hunt and screw at State College but gave that up about 10 years ago.
GreywolfParticipantWhat’s the over/under on how many points the Holes defense gives up this week?
When I first read this, I thought you were talking about Drivers License points. Makes a difference which one since there’s about a 50 point spread. Wink, wink.
09/26/2014 at 3:39 PM in reply to: Weekend in Raleigh – twists & turns of football recruiting #57021GreywolfParticipant“Looks like Coach Doeren and staff have put together a huge football recruiting weekend to coincide with Florida State’s visit to Raleigh this weekend.” Sarcasm alert: Isn’t this the same kind of stuff TOB had for recruits? It’s no wonder Wisconsin was loaded with talent while Doeren was Recruiting Coordinator. Anybody not excited about the future of Wolfpack football? (Not you two, ’13’ and ’44’)
Pack85EE,
You are so right about Gallaspy (if not so right about the Pack giving up long runs. Just poking fun at you) 😉“I’m looking for a team that I’m comfortable with that’s family-oriented,” Gallaspy said, “where I can spend three or four years and be comfortable on campus, off campus, in the classroom, outside the classroom.”
GreywolfParticipantJiggy,
If you did in deed use your Statistical Probability to predict this years game, I’m curious how your Statistical Probability predicted that NC State would only score 17 points. It’s way too complicated for me. Besides that I almost always lean towards the Pack in my wishful thinking.
I’m also interested in what your Statistical Probability had to say in 2012 about #3 FSU coming into The Carter and losing to unranked NC State, 17-16. I ask this to point to how vulnerable Statistical Probability is to predicting outcomes of college football games. I would trust your method in NFL games. As a matter of fact you may have something to sell to NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB teams. Statistical Probability is the hot trend in all those leagues.
As always it’s fun debating the stats game with you. Think a good thought about the Pack tomorrow. I know you hope I’m right. 😉
GreywolfParticipantI would also say that giving up the big play, specifically on the ground is one of our biggest problems. It seems our run defense will be looking good and then give up a 63 yarder.
You have to go back to the first game to find a “big play” over 30 yds. on the ground. The good runs but hardly big plays of 63 yards vs ODU can be attributed to our legitimate concern for the passing ability of last year’s Walter Payton Award winner.
ODU
total rushing 196 yds
Long of 30 yds
average of 5.3USF
total rushing 70 yds
Long of 21PC
total rushing 122 yds
Long of 16If “giving up the big play, specifically on the ground is one of our biggest problems.” then we have less to worry about than I thought.
GreywolfParticipantJiggy, Thanks for the great job you always do.
“I think the biggest problems NC State has is its Defense… <snip> … AND stopping teams on third down (allowing opponents to continue a drive until they score).”
Jiggy, You saw this coming didn’t you? 😉 I share your concern that FSU might continue drives until they score, but frogs might grow wings and not bump their asses when they land. If we stop those drives, it wouldn’t be the first time NC State has stood up to the mighty FSU juggernaut and handed them a defeat.
The Noles still have to stop OUR running game and they still have to stop OUR short passing game and hope we don’t bite’em in the ass with a long pass while they are doing it. The injuries to some their starting DL might just make a difference.
That crazy, oblong ball can take some funny bounces. I’m thinking a good thought that it bounces our way. What the hell. Why not? NC State 17, FSU 16 — again.
Go Pack!
